Presidents of Azerbaijan and Slovakia delivered press statements [PHOTOS/VIDEO]

On December 8, Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Peter Pellegrini, President of the Slovak Republic, delivered press statements in Bratislava.

The President of Slovakia made the statement first.

Statement by President Peter Pellegrini

– Ladies and gentlemen,

I am very pleased to welcome the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, to Slovakia here at the Presidential Palace today.

Mr. President, I am delighted that you have accepted my invitation. This is the first official visit by the President of Azerbaijan to Slovakia in history. This confirms our mutual interest at the highest level. We intend to establish and develop a strategic partnership with your country. Mr. President and I held extensive discussions both in an expanded format and in a one-on-one format. We have met many times in the past. As always, our meeting was very sincere and open because our countries are friends, and our relations have always been at a good level.

Slovakia views Azerbaijan as a partner of strategic importance in the region in which it is located. Azerbaijan is the largest economy in the South Caucasus. It is situated at the crossroads of Asia and Europe and is rich in energy resources. I am very pleased that our trade is increasing. There is significant growth, and we also noted today that some potential remains untapped.

Last year, the Declaration on Strategic Partnership was signed between the two countries, raising our relations to a higher level. Our cooperation in all areas of mutual interest can be expanded even further. In the future, Slovakia and Azerbaijan will cooperate even more closely – in the defense industry, advanced technologies, student exchange, tourism, culture, and other areas.

On behalf of the people of Slovakia, I would like to congratulate Mr. President and the Republic of Azerbaijan, as a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia has been initialed after many years. As you may know, this treaty was signed at the White House with the participation of President Donald Trump. Azerbaijan lives in peace today, and its citizens and society are now focused on the development of the country. Attention is now directed to the post-war period.

Azerbaijan can play a leading role for Slovakia. We are talking about diversifying our energy supplies. Of course, we recognize that Azerbaijan can be a long-term strategic partner for us. Our delegations will continue negotiations so that this becomes an agreement acceptable for Slovakia and allows us to benefit from Azerbaijan’s resources.

The defense industry is a very important sector, and we are already developing cooperation in this field. We do not intend simply to sell weapons to Azerbaijan. As you know, this sector is highly developed in Slovakia. We also have extensive experience in self-propelled artillery systems, ammunition, and other products. We can work with Azerbaijan on technology transfer, the use of Azerbaijani financial resources, and joint production, and we can sell jointly manufactured products to third countries.

I am pleased that during the visit of our Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Mr. Kalinák, the Azerbaijani side expressed its interest in purchasing automatic artillery systems and has now reaffirmed its intention. I am sure that these types of weapons will further strengthen the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.

Joint ventures, joint companies, technology transfer – in other words, we are determined to deepen our cooperation in this area, and of course, there may be other areas of mutual interest. As you know, a Slovak company is building a ‘smart village’ in the Garabagh region. In addition, our Export-Import Bank is ready to finance various projects.

In conclusion, I would like to note that Azerbaijan and Slovakia are friendly countries. Our ties can become even closer. I am glad that the Hungarian airline Wizz Air is actively connecting our countries and increasing the number of flights. Direct flights from Bratislava Airport to Baku can now be launched, as these are two dynamically developing regions, and we have already discussed this topic.

Mr. President, I welcome you once again to Bratislava. I am sure that your official visit will mark the beginning of a new and important stage in our cooperation. I am very pleased that we will meet again soon. Thank you once again for accepting my invitation. Of course, we met in Baku, but the Slovak President has not yet paid an official visit to Azerbaijan.

Once again, Mr. President, welcome to Slovakia!

Then, the President of Azerbaijan made the statement.

Statement by President Ilham Aliyev

– Dear Mr. President,

Dear friends,

Mr. President, first of all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for the invitation and for the hospitality extended.

I am sure that my official visit to Slovakia will have a very positive impact on the relations between our two countries.

As you have noted, this is the first official visit by the President of Azerbaijan to Slovakia. Of course, the talks we held during the visit, both in a one-on-one format and with the participation of delegations, are further evidence of the fact that Slovakia and Azerbaijan are true friends and strategic partners.

As you mentioned, Slovakia and Azerbaijan signed a Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership last year. It is a document that raises our relations to the highest level. Since that document was signed, we have observed very active cooperation in all areas.

You have already provided extensive information about our bilateral agenda. I would simply like to add that our joint teams are working hard on all the areas you mentioned. The joint economic working group is stepping up its activities. Specific projects are being implemented in the field of energy, which remains a traditional area of our cooperation. Last year, Azerbaijani gas was supplied to Slovakia for the first time. In fact, Azerbaijan can provide Slovakia with any volume of energy resources it may need.

I should also note that our rich gas fields have enabled us to export natural gas to many countries of the world today. The number of countries that purchase Azerbaijani gas has already reached 14. We hold first place as an exporter of gas through pipelines. As a result of the development of new gas fields, we will obtain additional resources, and, of course, it will be possible to supply Azerbaijani gas to both Slovakia and its neighbors in even larger volumes.

Currently, our total gas exports stand at 25 billion cubic meters, half of which is transported to European countries. Today, eight European Union member states provide for their energy security by purchasing Azerbaijani gas.

You have already mentioned another promising area of cooperation, which is the defense industry. We view cooperation in this area from the standpoint of industrial development. We do not intend to wage war. Wars are already a matter of the past for us. Simply put, by creating synergy and combining Slovak technologies with Azerbaijani financial capabilities, the production of new products may be of interest to world markets. Moreover, this will also bring us great benefits as a direction of technological development. We are working on specific projects in this area.

Exactly a month ago, on November 8, we celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Victory in the war of liberation, and it was a great pleasure to see the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Slovakia among our honored guests. We are grateful to the Slovak state and government for that. Such gestures once again show that we are, in the true sense of the word, friendly countries. Relevant government representatives have received instructions in all directions to raise cooperation to an even higher level in the coming years.

We are very pleased with Slovakia’s successful development under your leadership. There is stability and economic development in your country. Slovakia has very strong industrial potential. The fact that Slovakia pursues an independent foreign policy has earned you special respect. In some cases, you face certain difficulties because of this, but it does not deter you, and there is great respect for your country and leadership in our region.

Azerbaijan has long defined its foreign policy priorities. At the same time, we are currently playing the role of a bridge between East and West. The investments we have made in infrastructure, connectivity, and the transport sector have enabled Azerbaijan to become an important component of the East-West transport corridor. We are heavily involved in the Middle Corridor project. The most reliable and safest route connecting Central Asia with Europe passes through the territory of Azerbaijan.

In the coming years, we will expand our capabilities by investing additional funds in connectivity and transport. I believe that we should not overlook this area while developing relations between Slovakia and Azerbaijan, because it has great potential.

In addition, we discussed information technologies and the creation of data centers today. Azerbaijan’s advantage here is that we have substantial energy potential. Today, the unused energy potential in Azerbaijan is about 2 gigawatts, and it will increase to 8 gigawatts over the next five years. Of course, energy is one of the key factors for the operation of artificial intelligence and data centers. Climate is also an important factor here. Although we are a southern country, we also have very cold regions with frosty weather prevailing for most of the year. Therefore, we see our role as a hub for international data centers and intend to work with Slovak companies in this direction.

Mr. President, I would like to thank you once again for your hospitality. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to pay an official visit to Azerbaijan. You have visited Azerbaijan many times, but you have not yet been there on an official visit as President. If you have time, we would be ready and pleased to welcome you to Azerbaijan next year. Thank you very much again.

President Ilham Aliyev receives CEO of Global Infrastructure Partners [VIDEO]

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received Adebayo Ogunlesi, Founding Partner, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a leading global infrastructure investment management company, on December 8, Azernews reports

President Aliyev highly appreciated the partnership between the State Oil Fund of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ) and Global Infrastructure Partners, citing joint investments in the ‘Italo’ high-speed rail operator and London Gatwick Airport as successful examples of cooperation. Highlighting Azerbaijan’s long-term development strategy, the President emphasized the importance of the partnership with GIP in this framework.

Adebayo Ogunlesi noted that cooperation with SOFAZ has produced effective results, with the capital invested in GIP-managed funds creating a reliable partnership model.

Georgia allows one-time free transit of Azerbaijani oil products to Armenia

Georgia has agreed to permit a one-time free transit of oil products from Azerbaijan to Armenia, according to information circulated by Armenian media, Azernews reports.

As reported by Azernews, the Georgian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development confirmed that it had received a formal request from its partners regarding the transit of Azerbaijani fuel through Georgia en route to Armenia.

In its statement, the ministry noted that all sides were informed about the decision approved by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, emphasizing that the move applies exclusively to a single transit operation.

Recall that last Saturday, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Hikmet Hajiyev stated that the war with Armenia is over for Azerbaijan. He noted that the issue of exporting oil and oil products to Armenia was discussed during Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mger Grigoryan’s visit to Gabala in the previous week.

‘Some time ago, the Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia visited the Gabala region of Azerbaijan. This was again an unprecedented event. During the official visit of the Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia to Azerbaijan, the process of border delimitation was discussed. At the same time, some mutual trade issues between the two countries were discussed. One of these areas, which we are now discussing, is the issue of oil and oil products exports from Azerbaijan to Armenia. This is also an unprecedented event,’ Hajiyev said.

He also stressed that the recent permission to export wheat from Azerbaijani territory to Armenia was an important step toward strengthening peace in the region. According to Hajiyev, the role of US President Donald Trump in achieving peace with Armenia has been fundamental.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Armenian Security Council Armen Grigoryan stated that Armenia expects new opportunities from the opening of the TRIPP route, suggesting that it would help bring peace to the region and enable Armenia to channel more investment into its economy and cultural development. However, Grigoryan avoided commenting on Hajiyev’s remarks regarding the export of oil and oil products.

Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mger Grigoryan visited Gabala on November 28 to attend the 12th meeting of the demarcation commission. Official information released at the time did not mention discussions on economic issues. Still, ahead of his visit, Grigoryan had not ruled out that the delimitation process could be carried out in areas where the TRIPP route might pass, facilitating its opening.

Since its inception in 2019, the OIC Culture Festival has been held in various member states, strengthening collaboration in culture and creative industries while promoting mutual understanding and friendship among peoples. The Baku edition continues this tradition, bringing together more than 300 official delegates and experts from 50 countries, alongside an expected 5,000 visitors. The festival reaffirms the shared values and unity of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Azerbaijan Culture Minister Adil Karimli has addressed the opening ceremony of the festival.

Minister Karimli pointed out that the event provides an opportunity for policymakers, industry leaders, and creative professionals to share experiences, explore innovative solutions, and build sustainable partnerships. He also stressed that Azerbaijan’s commitment to cultural diplomacy is aligned with the broader goals of the OIC, which seeks to foster unity and cooperation among its member states through dialogue and shared values.

The Azerbaijani official concluded by expressing confidence that the outcomes of Baku Creative Week – 2025 would resonate far beyond Azerbaijan, contributing to the advancement of creative industries across the Islamic world and reinforcing the spirit of solidarity that defines the OIC community.

The role of Baku in hosting international events of global importance has also not gone unnoticed. The Secretary General highlighted that the festival’s diverse program demonstrates how culture can serve as a driver of economic growth, social cohesion, and international cooperation. By bringing together policymakers, artists, entrepreneurs, and young professionals, the event creates opportunities for dialogue and collaboration that extend beyond national borders.

Bakheet emphasised that the OIC Secretariat views such initiatives as vital for nurturing mutual respect and understanding among peoples, while also empowering youth to take an active role in cultural and creative development. He expressed confidence that the outcomes of Baku Creative Week – 2025 would contribute to building a sustainable cultural ecosystem across the Islamic world, reinforcing shared values and strengthening collective identity.

Concluding his remarks, Tarig Ali Bakheet stated that the festival is a testament to the vision of Azerbaijan and the OIC in promoting creativity as a cornerstone of human progress, and he expressed hope that the partnerships formed in Baku would inspire future projects that unite communities through culture and innovation.

Turkiye’s Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Nadir Alpaslan, emphasised that the festival functions not only as an artistic event but also as a significant means of reinforcing spiritual connections, mutual understanding, and shared historical memory among nations. He pointed out that the festival exemplifies how art can serve as a tool for fostering unity, noting that the fraternal relationship between Azerbaijan and Turkiye, grounded in the principle of “One nation, two states,” serves as a model of cultural collaboration.

Alpaslan further stated that Turkiye is consistently willing to support initiatives that promote cultural cooperation, encourage youth participation in creative environments, and develop innovative approaches to presenting Islamic culture. He underlined that the measures taken within the OIC framework, the expansion of cultural platforms, and the growth of creative industries are of strategic significance for Turkiye.

He observed that Islamic culture has historically influenced every aspect of life in the region, from architecture and music to literature and science, and that today it is being shared with broader audiences through new technological platforms, creative ecosystems, and global cultural integration. He expressed the belief that the festival would contribute to both preserving historical heritage and enriching it through a contemporary perspective.

Finally, Alpaslan acknowledged Azerbaijan’s leadership in cultural diplomacy and its contributions to regional solidarity, stating that these efforts are appreciated not only by Turkiye but by the entire Islamic world. He expressed confidence that cooperation in cultural projects would continue to expand in the coming years, introducing new initiatives and formats for cultural exchange.

Speaking at the inauguration of the OIC Cultural Festival: Baku Creative Week – 2025 in Baku, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, expressed that Pakistan, as a brotherly nation, took pride in Azerbaijan’s role as host of the landmark event. He stressed that Baku had become a cultural, creative, and intellectual platform for the Islamic world, providing new momentum to cooperation.

Khichi underlined that Pakistan is always willing to actively participate in initiatives that strengthen Islamic solidarity and promote shared cultural values. He explained that the festival should be seen not merely as an event but as a significant opportunity for cultural rapprochement, creative exchange, and strategic cooperation within the Islamic world. He stressed that the shared history, cultural roots, and religious unity of the Islamic nations bind them together not only symbolically but in genuine partnership, and Pakistan was committed to supporting cooperation at all levels to maintain and strengthen this unity.

He also highlighted that Azerbaijan’s efforts in cultural diplomacy and its contributions to cultural cooperation at both regional and global levels were highly commendable. Aurangzeb Khan Khichi expressed the belief that such fruitful initiatives would continue, further reinforcing the cultural identity of the Islamic world.

Delivering remarks at the opening ceremony, Libya’s Minister of Culture and Cognitive Development, Mabrouka Toghi, highlighted the significance of Azerbaijan’s contribution to Islamic solidarity, noting that it was widely acknowledged and respected. She stated that Azerbaijan’s efforts not only strengthen regional ties but also promote global cultural cooperation.

Mabrouka Toghi emphasised that the festival exemplifies these values, bringing together architects, artists, filmmakers, musicians, scholars, and young talents to share modern cultural developments, innovative ideas, and technological creativity. She pointed out that Islamic culture has historically served as a carrier of knowledge, science, art, and moral values, and that this heritage is reflected not only in libraries and museums but also in daily life, architecture, music, literature, and collective memory.

She added that the Libyan Culture Ministry is committed to continuing its work within the OIC framework to expand joint cultural programs, support the creative development of youth, and strengthen cooperation in knowledge and cognitive fields. Toghi also noted that creative industries are expected to become a key sector driving both economic and cultural development in the future.

Egypt’s Culture Minister, Ahmed Fouad Hanno, highlighted that Azerbaijan plays an exemplary role not only in preserving cultural heritage but also as a center for creativity and cultural cooperation within the Islamic world. He stated that Egypt believes the initiative contributes to expanding cultural dialogue in the region, strengthening historical ties, and promoting shared spiritual values globally. He expressed confidence that the festival would provide an opportunity to showcase the cultural strength, creative potential, and contemporary cultural policies of the Islamic world to the world audience.

Hanno also noted that every creative participant, expert, and cultural institution involved in the festival contributes to a common mission: preserving cultural heritage, transmitting it to future generations, and enriching it with modern and innovative approaches. He emphasised that Islamic culture has historically been one of humanity’s most valuable sources of scientific and aesthetic heritage, and that this centuries-old legacy, which has united Islamic nations, now takes on a strategic role in further strengthening cultural relations.

He affirmed that Egypt is prepared to work jointly to develop this shared cultural environment for future generations in a more creative, sustainable, and inclusive way, noting that culture serves as one of the most powerful means of fostering mutual understanding, respect, and lasting peace. Hanno concluded by observing that Baku today functions not only as a festival venue but also as an international hub serving as a bridge between cultures.

The Baku Creative Week – 2025 shows how the OIC Culture Festival is evolving into more than a cultural showcase; it’s becoming a platform for building networks and future opportunities. Moreover, Azerbaijan’s hosting of the festival marks a step toward shaping a more connected and forward-looking OIC community.
