This sport was introduced to the ancient Olympic Games by the Greeks in the late 7th century BC.

In 1924, the International Amateur Boxing Federation (FIBA) was established.

Since 1946, it has been referred to as the International Boxing Association (AIBA). Boxing made its Olympic debut at the 1904 Games in St. Louis.

In 1926, the boxing championship was held for the first time in Azerbaijan, where national boxers took first place.

Since 1992, the Azerbaijani Boxing Federation has become a full member of the International Boxing Association (AIBA).

Azerbaijani boxers have won many prestigious awards at many international championships.

Aghasi Mammadov has entered Azerbaijan’s history of boxing as the first national boxer, as a gold medallist at the world championship.

Another Azerbaijani boxer, Fuad Asadov, was among the medallists at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games.

Many times, Azerbaijan has been chosen as the host country for major boxing championships.

The AIBA Youth World Championships were held in Baku in 2019. This world championship was the first licensed youth tournament to qualify for the 2010 Olympic Games held in Singapore.

The country also hosted the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships, which was the first major qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Azerbaijan’s intellectual property model praised at Moscow Conference

According to Russia’s TASS news agency, the Second International Conference ‘Science for Public Administration in Russia’ was held on November 6 at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) in Moscow. Azernews reports that the event featured presentations on the role of intellectual property (IP) in public administration across the Eurasian region, with Azerbaijan’s state policy in the field of intellectual property highlighted as a model example.

Speaking at the conference, Grigory Ivliev, Honored Lawyer of the Russian Federation, First-Class State Advisor, former head of the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (Rospatent), and current President of the Eurasian Patent Office, delivered a report on ‘Regional Regulation of Intellectual Property Issues in the Eurasian Space.’

In his remarks, Ivliev emphasized the need to establish a unified executive body capable of centralizing management functions in copyright, related rights, and industrial property, and of formulating and implementing state policy in the IP field. He noted that Russia currently lacks such a unified structure and recommended learning from Azerbaijan’s successful experience.

Referring to Azerbaijan’s Intellectual Property Agency, established in 2018, Ivliev praised its comprehensive management model covering all aspects of intellectual property. Citing an article by Kamran Imanov, Chairman of the Board of the Intellectual Property Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, published in the authoritative international journal ‘Industrial Property’, Ivliev highlighted that the creation of the Agency stemmed from large-scale institutional reforms implemented under President Ilham Aliyev.

Within these reforms, the Patent Center of the former State Committee for Standardization, Metrology, and Patents and the Copyright Agency were merged to form a single, independent authority – the Intellectual Property Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan. This body, established by a presidential decree, was granted an executive status equal to that of other central government institutions.

Ivliev noted that Azerbaijan’s approach reflects a modern understanding of intellectual property that goes beyond traditional legal frameworks to include economic and socio-cultural dimensions. The integration of industrial property and copyright under one institutional umbrella, he said, demonstrates the effectiveness of this comprehensive model.

Quoting statistical data, Ivliev stated that 98 countries worldwide have unified intellectual property agencies, of which 37 operate independently without being subordinate to other bodies. ‘Among these 37 developed countries, Azerbaijan occupies a special place,’ he stressed. ‘This successful experience results from President Ilham Aliyev’s reforms, through which Azerbaijan’s IP system performs not only legal but also economic and socio-cultural functions.’

The conference was also attended by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, RANEPA Rector Alexei Komissarov, Director General of the Presidential Library Yuri Nosov, and other officials.

Carroll Shelby’s rare Ford GT goes to auction

This mid-January, Mecum Auction House will offer one of the most remarkable examples of the first-generation Ford GT40 sports car. This particular car is one of only 48 GT40 MkI units ever assembled, with its value further enhanced by participation in promotional events and direct connections to the legendary engineer Carroll Shelby. At this time, auctioneers have not disclosed any expectations for the final sale price, Azernews reports.

The GT40 in question, with chassis number P/1018, was built in 1965 and immediately delivered to Shelby American, which owned the car until 1968. During this period, it was featured in promotional photo shoots with Carroll Shelby and showcased at numerous exhibitions. Shelby himself also drove the car at various public events not directly linked to Ford.

This iconic sports car has also made appearances on screen. It was featured in John Frankenheimer’s film ‘Grand Prix’, appeared in an episode of the 1960s TV series ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, and even appeared in Top Gear in 2004. Beyond its screen presence, the GT40 has a rich history of full-scale races and historic events, as well as several restorations and repaintings. Remarkably, the car will be auctioned in its original 1965 color, preserving the authenticity of its first assembly.

Under the hood, this GT40 is powered by a 4.74-liter V8 engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission, staying true to its original performance specs.

The GT40 MkI is exceptionally rare. Only five roadster-bodied MkIs are known to exist, and just one of them ever competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which sold at auction earlier this spring for $7 million. Given its provenance, racing pedigree, and connection to Carroll Shelby, P/1018 is expected to attract serious collectors and enthusiasts alike.

This GT40 isn’t just a car – it’s a piece of automotive history that has touched Hollywood, raced on iconic tracks, and shared a road with one of the greatest automotive legends in history.
