China launches production of flying cars

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng has begun trial production of flying cars at its factory in southern China, Azernews reports.

“XPeng Aeroht, the flying car manufacturing division of XPeng, has started trial production at the world’s first intelligent factory dedicated to the serial production of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles,” the company announced.

The 120,000-square-meter factory, located in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, has already produced the first removable electric aircraft modules for its modular Land Aircraft Carrier vehicle.

The Guangzhou plant has a design production capacity of 10,000 removable aircraft modules per year, with an initial output of 5,000 units. Once it reaches full capacity, the factory will be able to assemble one aircraft every 30 minutes, according to XPeng.

XPeng’s flying car initiative represents a major step toward the future of urban air mobility in China, a market expected to grow rapidly over the next decade. Experts predict that XPeng’s modular eVTOL design could revolutionize personal transportation, offering a hybrid between road and air travel. The ability to produce removable aircraft modules also suggests a new era of customizable and scalable urban aviation solutions, potentially reshaping how people commute in congested cities.

Qatar may suspend gas supplies to Europe

Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi has warned that the country could suspend its liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies to the European Union if Brussels does not ease its increasingly strict environmental regulations, Azernews reports.

Speaking at an energy forum in Doha, Al-Kaabi criticized the EU’s push for net-zero emissions, calling the targets ‘unrealistic’ and potentially damaging to global energy security. He argued that while Europe’s climate goals are admirable, their rapid implementation risks undermining the stability of energy markets and deterring much-needed investment in natural gas infrastructure.

“We support the transition to cleaner energy sources, but we must be pragmatic,” Al-Kaabi said. “Gas will remain a vital component of the global energy mix for decades to come. Unrealistic targets only create uncertainty for producers and consumers alike.”

In the first quarter of 2025, Qatar became the third-largest LNG supplier to the EU, trailing only the United States and Russia, as Europe sought to diversify its energy sources following the global energy crisis.

Energy analysts note that Qatar’s warning reflects a growing tension between energy producers and Western policymakers, as exporting nations push back against what they see as overly aggressive climate commitments. Qatar, which is currently undertaking a massive expansion of its North Field project-the world’s largest natural gas field-is expected to significantly increase its LNG output by 2027.

Some experts suggest that if Doha follows through on its warning, it could reshape Europe’s LNG supply chain, forcing the EU to rely more heavily on U.S. and African producers or accelerate its renewable energy rollout.

Sri Lanka forms task force for forest and wildlife protection

On Monday, Sri Lanka launched an integrated operational task force named “Wana Surakuma” under the Ministry of Environment, aimed at safeguarding the country’s natural forests and wildlife resources, Azernews reports, citing foreign media.

According to the ministry, the primary goal of Wana Surakuma is to enhance the efficiency of forest and wildlife protection operations, while preventing and suppressing environmental crimes such as illegal logging, poaching, and wildlife trafficking.

The task force brings together officers from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Department of Forest Conservation, the Police Special Task Force, and representatives from Sri Lanka’s tri-forces. By uniting these agencies, the initiative seeks to strengthen coordination and enable rapid responses to forest-related crimes nationwide.

As part of its outreach, the task force will operate a 24-hour hotline through the short code 1995, allowing the public to report incidents of forest destruction, wildlife harm, or other environmental violations. Officials emphasized that public participation will play a crucial role in protecting Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.

Environmental experts note that Sri Lanka faces increasing pressures from deforestation, illegal wildlife trade, and human-wildlife conflicts, making coordinated initiatives like Wana Surakuma vital. Some analysts also highlight that the task force could become a model for regional cooperation in tackling environmental crimes, potentially inspiring similar efforts in South Asia.

In addition to law enforcement, the task force plans to launch educational campaigns and community engagement programs, aiming to raise awareness about sustainable forest management and wildlife conservation across the country.
