The Caribbean Music Awards (CMA) says legendary calypsonian Calypso Rose, as well as Shyne, Patra and Alan Cavé, will be honored during its fourth annual awards at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) here on Sept. 19.

Calypso Rose will receive the Elite Calypso Honor, while international recording artist, humanitarian and former Belize Government official Shyne will receive the Global Ambassador Honor.

Acclaimed Haitian-American singer-songwriter Alan Cavé will receive the Elite Konpa Honor, and Jamaican dancehall icon Patra will receive the Lifetime Achievement Honor.

Presented by Tourism Trinidad Limited, with support from the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited, the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism, and Global Trinidad and Tobago, CMA said this year’s celebration serves as ‘the centerpiece of the inaugural Caribbean Music Awards Elite Weekend Experience, bringing together artists, fans, industry leaders, cultural tastemakers and visitors from across the Caribbean and around the world for a destination celebration honoring the sounds, stories and global influence of Caribbean music.’

Inspired by this year’s theme, ‘Sounds of the Caribbean,’ CMA said the Fourth Annual Awards will ‘celebrate four cultural figures whose contributions have helped shape the global impact of Caribbean music.’

CMA said Calypso Rose will receive the Elite Calypso Honor, celebrating her ‘legendary contributions to Caribbean music and her role in bringing calypso to audiences worldwide.

‘A trailblazer for women in music, the Tobago-born icon has spent more than six decades shaping the genre, making history as the first woman to win Trinidad and Tobago’s Road March title and achieving global recognition with milestones, including her platinum-selling album, ‘Far From Home,” CMA said.

Patra will receive the Lifetime Achievement Honor in recognition of her groundbreaking career and enduring influence on dancehall, reggae and global Black music.

Born in the western parish of Westmoreland in Jamaica, Patra began her career as a female DJ under the name ‘Lady Patra’ before rising to international prominence through her collaboration with Shabba Ranks on ‘Family Affair.’

Her 1993 debut album, Queen of the Pack, released through Epic Records, made history as the first album by a Jamaican female artist to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart and was later certified Gold in the United States.

The project produced her signature hit ‘Worker Man,’ which reached No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100, entered the Top 20 on the R and B chart, and topped the US Dance chart, CMA said.

With additional hits, including ‘Romantic Call,’ ‘Scent of Attraction,’ ‘Black Cinderella,’ and her acclaimed remake of Grace Jones’ ‘Pull Up to the Bumper,’ Patra became ‘one of the most recognizable female faces of Jamaica’s 1990s dancehall movement.’

Patra’s crossover presence extended into American hip-hop culture through appearances in music videos for artists including The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur, ‘while her distinctive style, commanding presence and unapologetic portrayal of Black womanhood helped pave the way for a new generation of female dancehall artists.’

Shyne will receive the Global Ambassador Honor in recognition- of his evolution from internationally-acclaimed recording artist to cultural leader, humanitarian and global advocate for Belize and the Caribbean.

Following the success of his 2000 self-titled debut on Bad Boy Records, which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and earned Gold certification, CMA said Shyne has ‘dedicated himself to public service, youth empowerment and cultural advancement while serving as Belize’s Music and Goodwill Ambassador.’

Alan Cavé will receive the Elite Konpa Honor in recognition of his ‘extraordinary influence on Haitian music and the global Konpa movement.’

Known as the ‘King of Kompa Love,’ Cavé has spent more than three decades defining the genre through his ‘timeless songwriting, signature vocals and influential work as both a member of Zin and a celebrated solo artist, inspiring generations of musicians throughout the Caribbean and Diaspora.’

The honorees will be celebrated as part of its Elite Weekend Experience, a three-day destination celebration taking place Sept. 18-20, throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

The weekend will feature a welcome reception, industry programming, cultural activations, fan experiences, the Caribbean Music Awards ceremony, the official after-party, and a special Steelpan celebration featuring Stars and Steel.

Following three successful years in Brooklyn, New York, the Awards will make its international debut in Trinidad and Tobago as part of its ‘continued mission to celebrate Caribbean music and culture across different regions of the Caribbean.

The Antigua and Barbuda Falcons were dismissed for 116 in 17 overs after being sent in by the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the 15th match of the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League here at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Sunday.

A scholarship has been launched in memory of former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant , Latoya Malcolm.

The Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce Delano Seiveright announced the establishment of the LaToya Malcolm Scholarship for Resilience.

The announcement came amid emotional scenes as the mother, family and friends of Malcolm wept and paid their final respects at her funeral on Saturday.

Seiveright, a friend of Malcom, said the scholarship will see two high school students each receiving J$100,000 to assist with their educational development.

Malcolm, 35, whose sudden passing in July shocked her family, friends and the wider entertainment and pageant communities, was remembered during the deeply emotional service as an exceptionally kind, loving and good-hearted young woman.

The scholarship will honour her memory by assisting young people facing challenges while pursuing their education. For this year’s award, two high-school students will each receive funds towards their education.

‘LaToya was special, she was loved, and she will not be forgotten. I hope this assistance in her name will give two young people an opportunity to keep pushing forward despite the challenges they may face,’ said Seiveright.

Former Jamaican international Lloyd Barker was inducted into the Wall of Fame of Canadian club CF Montreal here on Saturday.

The 55-year-old, who also represented Harbour View FC, was inducted during the half-time break of Montreal’s match against the LA Galaxy. The club has changed its name from Montreal Impact to CF Montreal.

Barker, who grew up in Harbour View, is the eighth player in the club’s history to receive the honour. He propelled Montreal Impact to two titles in 1994 and 2004, along with three consecutive regular season titles in 1995, 1996 and 1997.

Barker appeared in 191 regular season matches throughout his career, ranking seventh in club history. With 34 goals and 31 assists, he also sits fourth all-time in both categories.

Barker also represented the Impact in indoor soccer in the National Professional Soccer League during the 1997-98 and 1999-2000 seasons, recording 12 goals and seven assists.

His individual accolades include the Giuseppe Saputo Trophy, awarded to the club’s Most Valuable Player, as well as a selection to the APSL First All-Star Team in 1995. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was named a member of the Club’s Builders in 2006.

Barbadian teenager Luke McIntyre produced a sensational performance to win the Junior Men’s title at the 2026 Americas Triathlon Junior Cup here on Saturday.

McIntyre, 17, crossed the finish line in 58:26 to emerge victorious in a competitive 18-athlete field over the sprint-distance course of a 750m swim, 18.7km bike and 5km run.

He shared the fastest swim split of the day at 10:54, then rode a 31:40 bike leg before pulling away with the outright fastest run split of the race, a 14:27 5km, to seal the win.

Maximiliano Bobadilla of Chile finished second in 58:40, while Uruguay’s Elias Medina Paolucci completed the podium in third at 58:52.

The victory caps a breakthrough month for McIntyre, who has spent the past several weeks training in South America as one of six athletes selected continent-wide for the Americas Triathlon Development Committee’s Team Americas camp.

Held in Asunción, Paraguay and Lima from August 6 to 24, the program is built around ‘the Road to the 2027 Lima Pan American Games’ and paired McIntyre with top emerging talent from across the region before sending him into the World Triathlon Development Cup and the Junior Cup in Lima.

It also marked McIntyre’s second podium of the South American swing.

In July he finished third in the Junior Men’s race at the Americas Triathlon Championships in Antofagasta, Chile, clocking 57:15.

Saturday’s win in Lima improves on that result and moves his career record to five victories and seven podiums from 12 starts, according to World Triathlon’s ranking database.

Olympic 100m champion Oblique Seville ran a sizzling 9.83 seconds to win gold in dominant fashion at the Silesia Diamond League here at the Stadion Slaski on Sunday.

The Jamaican sprinter burst out of the blocks and never relinquished his lead on his way to setting a new meet record.

His time was 0.04 seconds faster than the previous record of 9.87 set by American Fred Kerley in 2024 and was just 0.01 shy of his season’s best 9.82.

Seville relegated American Kenneth Bednarek, who ran a season’s best 9.87 seconds and his colleague Christian Coleman (9.93) to second and third respectively.

The highly anticipated showdown between Seville and Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi, who had beaten Seville in both London and Eugene earlier this season never materialised, with the latter finishing fourth in 9.94, with Gift Leotlela of South Africa fifth in 9.95.

‘I am in pretty good shape and I feel pretty good about the win. I am in great shape for the Ultimate Championships. The atmosphere here is great and I will look to come back next year,’ Seville said after the race.

‘This is my first time in Poland. The victory feels nice, especially as I ran close to my PB. I am just having fun. There are great things ahead of me. For the rest of the season, I would like to keep winning, and the next win should be in Brussels.’

A man left paralysed after being shot by a police officer in 2016 has been awarded an US$80,000 interim payment from the state to help cover urgent medical treatment.

Justice Camille Darville Gomez ordered the Commissioner of Police and the Attorney General to make the payment to Thorne Clarke, who has developed a severe pressure ulcer requiring surgery.

Clarke was 22 when he was shot in the back, leaving him paralysed from the sternum down. He sued the Commissioner of Police and Attorney General in 2018, and a default judgment was entered against them the following year.

The final amount of compensation remains unresolved. Clarke is seeking $2.064 million in damages, while the defendants have valued his claim at $539,250.03.

An assessment of damages was held before Assistant Registrar Jonathan Deal in May 2025, but a ruling remains outstanding.

While awaiting the decision, Clarke developed a stage-four pressure ulcer on his right buttock that later became infected, resulting in a nine-day hospital stay.

His doctor has recommended surgery to close the wound and reduce the risk of further infection. The procedure and aftercare are estimated at $57,488.32, while Clarke also owes more than $11,000 for previous treatment.

Clarke initially sought an interim payment of $200,000 before reducing the request to $100,000.

The defendants opposed the application, arguing that an interim award while the damages ruling was pending could result in an overpayment.

Justice Darville Gomez ruled that the court retained the power to grant an interim payment and said Clarke’s medical condition demonstrated an urgent need for financial assistance.

The judge used the defendants’ $539,250.03 damages assessment as a conservative baseline and determined that $80,000 – about 14 percent of that amount – provided meaningful assistance while limiting the risk of overpayment.

Former education minister and senator Hazel Manning is set to contest the chairmanship of the People’s National Movement’s (PNM) San Fernando East constituency executive when elections are held next month. Her son, San Fernando East member of parliament Brian Manning, confirmed the development on Saturday.

Manning’s decision comes amid ongoing tensions within the constituency, where a dispute has emerged between the MP and current constituency chairman Patricia Alexis.

The impasse has led to a series of resignations from the constituency executive. A third executive member stepped down on Saturday, while party sources indicated that a fourth resignation is expected on Sunday.

Despite the internal turmoil, the PNM is moving ahead with plans to complete constituency executive elections and have a new executive in place by September.

In a statement yesterday, Hazel Manning said she decided to offer herself for the chairmanship after receiving numerous appeals from party supporters in San Fernando East.

‘Over the last few months, I have observed the escalating turmoil and overwhelming concerns by the people of San Fernando East regarding the conduct, reputation and business of some who represent us,’ she said.

Manning described San Fernando East as a constituency of particular significance to both her family and the PNM.

‘San Fernando East is a symbolic seat, not just for the legacy of Patrick Manning and the Manning family, but for the People’s National Movement,’ she said.

‘For decades, I watched my husband, and now my son Brian Manning, walk every street, take note of every issue and make sacrifices to try to reach and represent every constituent.’

She said the ongoing dispute and appeals from party members ultimately prompted her to step forward.

‘Given the circumstances, and following countless phone calls, in the interest of bringing peace to the constituency, tonight I formally agree to offer myself to serve in the position of chairman of the San Fernando East constituency. I appreciate each of you. Let us work together to repair, recover and rebuild.’

Brian Manning said his mother had received strong support from party members who believe she could help resolve the divisions within the constituency.

‘She has received overwhelming requests from San Fernando party faithful,’ he said. ‘They believe she is the only person who can bring peace.’

The Guyana Amazon Warriors hardly broke a sweat on their way to a comprehensive seven-wicket win over the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, their third in as many matches in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League.

Fast bowler Shamar Joseph led a sensational bowling performance by the visitors that saw them rout the Falcons for a mere 116 in 17 overs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer then both just fell short of half centuries, with their efforts propeling the Amazon Warriors to 121 for three in only 9.5 overs.

The result was never in doubt after Joseph, captain Imran Tahir and fellow spinner Khary Pierre ripped the heart out of the home side’s batting lineup.

Rahkeem Corwall and Amir Jangoo’s speedy opening partnership was ended when the former gifted Player-of-the-Match Pierre with a simple return catch to make the score 18 for one in the second over.

Pierre also claimed the wicket of Karima Gore for eight, before a 40-run partnership between Amir Jangoo and Hasan Nawaz looked to have given the Falcons the momentum they needed.

However, once Tahir had Nawaz spectacularly caught at deep sqaure leg by Glenn Phillips for 20, the Falcons lost their way.

Phillips struck a crucial blow by dismissing Jangoo for 37 off 29 balls in his solitary over to leave the home side 84 for four and 12 runs later Joseph prised out the wicket of Joshua James.

The Falcons then lost their last five wickets for eight runs, with Joseph bringing the innings to a screeching end by bowling Alzarri Joseph and Jayden Seales for ducks in the space of three balls.

He finished with figures of 3-22, while Tahir (2-15) and Pierre (2-19) each took two wickets.

The Amazon Warriors lost the early wickets of Phillips and Matthew Nandu for 11 and one respectively, to find themselves in a shaky position of 16 for two in the third over.

But any hopes the Falcons had of pulling off an unlikely victory were quickly erased by Hope and Hetmyer, who put on 99 runs for the third wicket in seven overs.

Hope scored five runs off his first eight balls but broke out by hitting Joseph for two successive sixes to begin the fourth over, which also included a majestic square drive that raced away to the boundary.

He then thumped Seales for a four and six off consecutive deliveries in the next over, before Hetmyer joined in on the fun by thumping Cornwall for back-to-back sixes in the seventh over.

Moeen Ali was then hit for two sixes by Hetmyer, and he also gave the same treatment to medium pacer Shamar Springer, bludgeoning him for two sixes and a four in the 10th over to move within a run of a well-deserved 50.

Springer got the last laugh though, by having Hetmyer caught the next ball for 49 off 17 balls, with the Amazon Warriors needing just two runs for victory.

Quentin Sampson then finished off the match in style by swatting Springer for six, as Hope finished unbeaten on 47 off 26 balls with four sixes and two fours.
