GUYANA-FIRE-Authorities say all 33 school children safe after fire

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security says all 33 children residing at the privately-owned Hope Children’s Home on the East Coast of Demerara have been safely evacuated following a fire at the facility on Friday.

It said that at the time the fire broke out, the children were attending Vacation Bible School (VBS) in the church building on the compound and that the blaze reportedly started in the boys’ dormitory.

‘All children were immediately evacuated and assembled in a safe area on the dam. The Ministry can confirm that every child has been accounted for, comprising 15 girls and 18 boys,’ the ministry said, adding that ‘the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA), along with officials from the Ministry, has already begun relocating the children to state care facilities, where they will continue to receive the care, protection and support they need’.

The ministry did not say what caused the fire, adding ‘the safety and well-being of the children remain’ its highest priority.

In May 2023, at least 20 children died as a fire swept through a dormitory at the Mahdia Secondary School 100 miles south-west of Georgetown.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced the changes in a statement on Friday, while also disclosing that left-arm spinner Khary Pierre, who featured in the three matches in Guyana, will return to Trinidad.

Greaves, who was named Player-of-the-Series in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka, missed the opening three matches of the ODI series due to a back injury. ‘Justin Greaves and Brandon King have been called into the squad, replacing Roston Chase and John Campbell, respectively.

‘Chase is continuing his recovery from a laceration and contusion to his right index finger, an injury he sustained during the second Test against Sri Lanka,’ the statement read.

CARIBBEAN-CLIMATE-CRFM and CCCCC leaders hold discussions on further collaboration

The Belize-based Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) say they have taken an important step toward working more closely together to help protect the Caribbean’s oceans, fisheries, and coastal communities from the growing impacts of climate change.

A meeting of the leadership of the two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) organizations were held on Thursday and according to a statement issued Friday, they ‘discussed how to combine their knowledge, resources, and experience to tackle some of the region’s most pressing environmental challenges’.

The statement said the CRFM shared updates on several major projects that are helping Caribbean countries build stronger, more sustainable fisheries. It said that these initiatives improve marine planning, support renewable energy, strengthen local fishing communities, and promote gender equality in the fisheries sector.

‘One of the biggest topics of discussion was sargassum, the large amounts of brown seaweed that continue to wash up on Caribbean beaches. While sargassum can harm tourism, fishing, and marine ecosystems, both organizations agreed that it could also become an opportunity if safely transformed into useful products through a circular economy approach.’

The statement said that they also emphasised the need for more research, better coordination, and shared information to solve the problem effectively.

‘The meeting also highlighted the growing importance of Blue Carbon; the carbon stored in coastal ecosystems such as mangroves and seagrasses, which plays a key role in combating climate change.

‘It was noted that there has been a conversation in the region about the need to develop a Blue Carbon Policy to help Caribbean countries protect these valuable natural resources,’ the statement said, adding that another major priority discussed was improving access to climate and marine data.

‘Both organizations recognised that better information is essential for making smarter decisions, creating stronger policies, and helping Caribbean countries prepare for future climate challenges. They agreed that sharing data more openly will benefit governments, researchers, fishers, and coastal communities across the region.

‘Both the CRFM and CCCCC emphasised that stronger partnerships are essential for protecting the Caribbean’s marine resources and ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from healthy oceans,’ the statement said, noting that the partnership reflects a shared vision: a Caribbean where healthy oceans, thriving fisheries, resilient coastal communities, and climate-smart development go hand in hand.

CARIBBEAN-ELECTRICITY-Latin America and the Caribbean electricity generation grew in April-OLADE

The Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLADE) Friday said that Latin America and the Caribbean electricity generation grew 4.5 per cent in April 2026, with renewables supplying moree than 60 per cent of the grid

It said that the LAC continues to strengthen one of the cleanest electricity systems in the world and that in April 2026, the region generated 164 TWh of electricity, 67 per cent of which came from renewable energy sources. OLADE said that this figure underscores the structural dominance of clean energy despite climate-related fluctuations that affected hydropower generation. Overall, regional electricity generation increased by 4.5 per cent year-on-year.

OLADE in its latest electricity generation report noted that hydropower remained the region’s primary source of electricity, accounting for 44.6 per cent of total generation, followed by natural gas at 23.2 per cent and wind energy 12.2 percent.

‘Together, these three sources represented nearly 80 per cent of all electricity generated across LAC during the month under review. Although hydropower output declined by 9.4 TWh compared with April 2025, the reduction was offset by increases in wind generation (+5.1 TWh), natural gas (+4.6 TWh), and bioenergy (+3.3 TWh),’OLADE said, adding ‘this highlights the region’s growing ability to adapt to changing climate conditions through a more diversified electricity mix’.

It said the renewability index further confirms the region’s energy leadership. Nine of OLADE’s 27 Member Countries exceeded the regional average of 67 per cent.

According to OLADE, these indicators demonstrate that the sustained integration of renewable energy technologies, together with complementary sources such as natural gas, is strengthening electricity supply security while enhancing the region’s resilience to climate variability-one of the most significant challenges facing power systems across Latin America and the Caribbean.
