Minister of Justice and Public Order, Costas Fitiris, will pay a working visit to Athens on Monday, January 12, where he will have meetings with the Ministers of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias, Justice Georgios Florides and Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoides.

A press release by the Ministry says that during his contacts the Minister will discuss strengthening of Cyprus-Greece cooperation on issues of maritime safety, law enforcement as well as Justice and Police cooperation.

Fytiris will also present the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU and brief the Ministers about the Informal Council on Justice and Home Affairs to be held in Nicosia on January 21-23.

The Cyprus Museum celebrates Cyprus’ assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026, with a series of events on Saturday, January 17, in the afternoon.

The Department of Antiquities of the Deputy Ministry of Culture announced that at 16:00- 16:45 there will be a presentation of the upgrade works of the permanent exhibition of the Cyprus Museum. The presentation will be addressed by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou, and the Director of the Department of Antiquities, Dr. Giorgos Georgiou.

The announcement notes that the permanent collection of the Cyprus Museum has been enhanced with the addition of significant finds from archaeological research conducted through the years, as well as antiquities that have been repatriated to Cyprus in recent years.

The exhibition has also been enhanced with texts and other graphics, the exhibition lighting has been improved, and the existing display cases have been upgraded. As such, the visitor experience at the island’s most important archaeological museum has been substantially enhanced.

A guided tour of the Cyprus Museum is scheduled at 16:45-18:00, followed by the theatrical performance Encounters, a staged reading within the framework of the project Performing Collections, Performing Archives: the Creative Afterlives of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition, at 18:30-19:30.

The announcement notes that, during the staged reading, access to the Museum’s spaces will be limited, and adds that advance reservation is required, via text message, by 15/01/2026 at 99769321, with the name and the number of attendees.

Another guided tour of the Cyprus Museum will take place at 19:30-20:30, followed by selected music by Sofronis Sofroniou and reception in the Museum garden.

The travel advice the Cyprus Foreign Ministry issued in 2024 for Iran is still in place.

The Ministry advises Cypriot citizens intending to travel to Iran to avoid all travel to the country, due to the current regional situation and recent developments. The advice date is August 5, 2024.

Oceana urges the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU to secure decades of progress on rebuilding fisheries and to pursue ocean health as a strategic pillar for EU security, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.

In a press release circulated on Friday, Oceana, the largest international advocacy organisation dedicated solely to ocean conservation, calls on Cyprus to steer the Union towards an unequivocal strategic direction: a restored ocean that strengthens Europe’s security by providing food, employment, and resilience against the climate crisis.

”The first semester of 2026 will be decisive in preserving effective fisheries legislation and in drafting a coherent framework that protects the ocean and the communities that depend on it”, the press release says.

Vera Coelho, Oceana’s Executive Director and Vice President in Europe, said that Cyprus is on the frontline of the devastation caused by climate change and by the depletion of fish stocks in the Mediterranean.

”As an island nation and the home country of the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, Cyprus has the opportunity and the responsibility to set the tone for the next decade of ocean policy”, she said.

She noted also that it is crucial that this Presidency safeguards the benefits of ocean recovery, achieved after decades of hard work, and now threatened by the so-called ‘simplification’ agenda of industrial lobbies.

Oceana underlines that other initiatives, such as the development of the EU Ocean Act, the publication of a 2040 vision for EU fisheries, the achievement of internationally agreed marine protection targets, and the fight against illegal fishing, will remain at the top of the EU ocean agenda in 2026.
