Broader effects from the energy shock remain contained, the Government of the Central Bank of Cyprus, Christodoulos Patsalides said on Friday, commenting on ECB’s monetary decision to keep key interest rates unchanged on Thursday.

In a written statement, Patsalides noted that the economic outlook continues to be shaped by heightened geopolitical uncertainty. “Risks to inflation continue to be tilted to the upside, whereas risks to growth remain on the downside,” he noted, adding that elevated energy prices are increasing production costs.

“The longer the conflict in the Middle East endures, the greater the risk that these pressures broaden and become more persistent,” he said.

Firefighting services remain on heightened alert, Longinos tells CNA

Firefighting services will remain on heightened alert until the end of July, Chief Fire Officer Nicos Longinos, the General Fire Coordinator, told CNA on Friday.

Responding to a CNA question, Longinos said temperatures are expected to rise again next week following a slight drop over the weekend, while winds in some areas continue to keep the risk of wildfires high.

He said weather conditions are continuously assessed in cooperation with the Department of Meteorology to ensure that the services remain ready to respond, adding that several small fires have been brought under control before they could spread.

Longinos also said that an operational readiness drill was held in Limassol on Friday, during which the ‘Astrapi’ plan was activated under a grey alert and personnel were instructed to report immediately to their fire stations. He described the results as ‘excellent’, saying that more than 85% of personnel reported for duty within 30 minutes.

Cyprus power supply stable as grid expected to meet Friday demand

Cyprus’s electricity system is operating under stable conditions on Friday, with power demand expected to be fully met while maintaining adequate reserve capacity, according to Haris Zavallis, Assistant Director of the National Energy Control Centre at the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO).

Speaking to CNA, Zavallis said available conventional generation stood at 1,188 MW on Friday morning and is expected to rise to 1,248 MW later in the day with the return to service of a 60 MW generating unit at the Dhekelia power station.

He explained that the same unit, which had resumed operation earlier on Thursday, was forced offline later that evening after developing a technical fault. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is investigating the cause of the problem.

Electricity demand is forecast to peak at 1,320 MW between 14:00 – 16:00 while the evening peak between 19:00 -21:30 is expected to reach around 1,065 MW.

Zavallis said the system is expected to comfortably meet demand throughout the day.

“Regardless of whether the Dhekelia unit is available, today’s electricity demand is expected to be fully covered, with the necessary reserve capacity remaining in the system”, he said.

UN SG’s Cyprus visit falls within “very sustained political efforts,” Lacroix tells CNA

The visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Cyprus on July 27-29 for talks with the leaders is taking place “against the backdrop of very sustained political efforts” on the part of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy on the Cyprus problem, Maria Angela Holguín, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, told CNA on Thursday, during a briefing to journalists in Brussels.

Lacroix, who was responding to a question from CNA, added that he hopes the visit will “provide additional steps for progress” on the political front, while making clear that his own role is kept separate from the substance of the negotiations.

“What we do with UNFICYP is germane to the political process, because it’s about creating conditions on the ground that are more conducive to political efforts being continuous,” he said. “The good news for me is that I’m staying away from being too much involved in those political negotiations, which are extremely sensitive and kept with the necessary degree of confidentiality,” he added.

Asked whether the situation on the ground looks different from his last visit to Cyprus in April, including with regard to the Pyla plateau, Lacroix did not address specific flashpoints, offering instead a broader assessment of the mission’s performance.

“UNFICYP is a mission that has delivered on its mandate,” he said. “The mandate is straightforward – preserving the ceasefire by monitoring and making sure that anything that happens, any incident which has the potential of escalation, is taken care of,” he noted. He described the mission’s role as “working for de-escalation, and avoiding potential tension, or, God forbid, the resumption of hostilities,” adding that “from that point of view, UNFICYP has delivered and continues to deliver.”

Lacroix linked the peacekeeping mandate directly to the diplomatic track led by Guterres and Holguín. “It’s fundamental to these political efforts, because if you see any resumption of tension – and again, God forbid the resumption of serious tension – then you can imagine the impact on the political efforts,” he said.

“Whatever the mandate, ultimately they are political – they’re about supporting political efforts, whether you’re talking about simply monitoring a ceasefire or a bigger mandate. It’s always, at the end of the day, about providing support for efforts towards a durable political solution,” the UN official said in conclusion.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

After informal meetings in 2025, followed by a hiatus of several months, deliberations are underway for a new meeting in broader format to be held, as the term of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres nears its end. María Angela Holguín, Guterres’ Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is tasked to engage with the parties.

Cheaper electricity and system reliability key goals, Energy Minister says

The goal of providing cheaper electricity for consumers and ensuring the safe operation of the electricity system, as the foundations of the country’s green and competitive development, remains the common denominator of all efforts, Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michael Damianos noted on Thursday, adding that energy storage is a key pillar of the Government’s energy strategy.

In his address at the presentation of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) 2025 annual achievements, held at the Authority’s headquarters in Nicosia, Damianos stated that “the EAC continues to be a strategic pillar of the state’s energy policy and a key partner in the transition towards a secure, competitive, and climate-neutral energy system.” He added that the EAC’s contribution is crucial both to achieving the country’s national energy objectives and to safeguarding energy security and the quality of services provided to citizens.

Referring to the challenges ahead, the Minister said these include upgrading the electricity grid and installing energy storage systems to increase the penetration of renewable energy and reduce renewable energy curtailments, implementing the EAC’s production development programme, with particular emphasis on upgrading the EAC power station at Dhekelia, expanding the Authority’s renewable energy portfolio, and ensuring the smooth operation of the competitive electricity market.

He noted that the EAC has embraced its modernization programme with commitment, saying that “we recognize and greatly appreciate this.” He added that upgrading and digitalizing the transmission and distribution networks, based on their ten-year development plans and supported by approximately pound 120 million in European funding, is helping to gradually remove the technical barriers to the further integration of distributed renewable energy generation while reducing the curtailment of green energy.

The Minister stated that by 2030, Cyprus will require at least 600 MW of energy storage capacity to reduce renewable energy curtailments to acceptable levels. He added that the Transmission System Operator is implementing a distributed energy storage system with a total capacity of 120 MW, which will operate with full transparency.

Air transport prices in Cyprus down by 1.8%, according to Eurostat

Prices of air transport services in Cyprus fell by 1.8% in June 2026 compared with June 2025, according to data published on Thursday by Eurostat.

Based on Eurostat data, prices of air transport services in Cyprus had increased by 7.8% in May, while in April they had decreased by 0.7% and in March by 0.4%, on an annual basis.

In the EU, the average price of air transport services, including plane tickets, has fluctuated significantly since January 2025. According to Eurostat, this volatility reflects travel demand, seasonality and recent geopolitical events.

Between January 2025 and June 2026, the highest increase in prices of air transport services in the EU was recorded in April 2025, at 13.7%, compared with April 2024.

This increase was followed by fluctuations, with modest rises during the summer months.

The year 2026 began with a year-on-year decrease, followed by increases in February and March and a sharp drop of 4.7% in April.

In May, prices of air transport services in the EU rose by 8.1% compared with May 2025, while in June they recorded an increase of 3.1%.

Orange warning in effect for high temperatures on Thursday

An orange warning for high temperatures issued by the Department of Meteorology is in effect today, Thursday, with the maximum temperature expected to reach around 44 degrees Celsius inland.

Specifically, the warning is valid from 12:00 to 17:00 (local time).

According to the Department of Meteorology, the maximum temperature is expected to rise to around 44°C in inland areas and around 33°C in the higher mountainous regions.

Energy programme remains on track, Damianos says

The Republic of Cyprus’ energy programme remains on schedule, Energy Minister Michalis Damianos said, adding that first gas from the Aphrodite field is expected by the end of 2030 or in 2031.

Asked about an announcement issued on Wednesday by NewMed on the signing of a memorandum for the sale to the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) of all recoverable natural gas volumes from the Aphrodite field, located in Block 12 of Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone, Damianos said the company was required to make the announcement because it is publicly traded.

He said the agreement concerns the development of the Aphrodite field, with the gas to be transported to Egypt ‘in line with the agreements reached so far with our partners’.

‘The energy programme is progressing as planned. We expect the final investment decision in January 2027, with Chevron also expected to take its final investment decision that year. This means that within four years, by the end of 2030 or in 2031, we expect first gas from Aphrodite,’ he added.

‘This is the energy programme, these are the timelines and, at present, everything is proceeding according to schedule,’ the Minister concluded.

CING team identifies biological mechanisms and genes that affect astronauts, Prof. Spyrou tells CNA

Biological mechanisms and genes that appear to be consistently affected by microgravity, in space, were identified through a research conducted by a team from the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, (CING) led by Professor George Spyrou, Bioinformatics ERA Chair, Head of the Bioinformatics Department at the Institute.

As human presence in space will become increasingly long-term, CNA spoke with Spyrou about his team’s research. Our research, he added, focuses on understanding how the space environment affects the human body at the cellular and molecular level.

The computational approaches they used to identify potential therapeutic interventions, he went on to say, suggest possible directions for future research, although these ideas will require substantial experimental validation.

Spyrou said that together with Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO), they built a bridge between space science and biomedical research, with the goal not only of improving our understanding of astronaut health, but also of gaining insights that may ultimately benefit human health here on Earth.

In addition, his team developed an open-access online database and analysis platform that brings together data from space biology studies and allows researchers to explore and analyse these data more efficiently.

Collaboration of CING with CSEO

Asked about the collaboration of the Bioinformatics Department at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) with the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO) he said that this took place on the initiative to establish the Cyprus Space Research and Innovation Centre (C-SpaRC) following an invitation by President of CSEO George Danos.

Spyrou noted that C-SpaRC is ‘a pioneering initiative aimed at establishing Cyprus as a leading hub for space research and innovation, addressing the need for dedicated space infrastructure in Cyprus to support the growing space ecosystem and the Cyprus Space Cluster.’

The project, he added, secured competitive funding under the Research and Innovation Foundation’s (RIF) Strategic Infrastructures call and was placed under the auspices of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) as an International Space Innovation Centre – a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to foster international collaboration in space research and exploration.

Space, a demanding environment for humans

Spyrou told CNA that space is an ‘extremely demanding environment for the human body.’

He explained that ‘the absence of gravity, increased exposure to cosmic radiation, and intense cellular stress can trigger biological changes that we are still working to fully understand.’

‘This is where our team was able to contribute, through advanced bioinformatics and the analysis of large-scale biological datasets, helping decode these changes at the molecular level’ he pointed out.

Spyrou said that together with Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO), ‘we built a bridge between space science and biomedical research, with the goal not only of improving our understanding of astronaut health, but also of gaining insights that may ultimately benefit human health here on Earth.’

Research on space travel and human biology

Asked about his team’s research on human biology and space, he said that ‘our research focuses on understanding how the space environment affects the human body at the cellular and molecular level.’

He stressed that ‘although we have known for years that spaceflight influences human health, the precise biological mechanisms behind these changes are still not fully understood.’

In our work, he added, ‘we used bioinformatics approaches to analyse large biological datasets, including gene expression data from human cells exposed to microgravity conditions. Our goal was to identify which genes change their activity, which cellular functions are affected, and which biological mechanisms appear to play a central role in the body’s response to spaceflight.’

Through this approach, Spyrou told CNA, ‘we examined mechanisms related to oxidative stress, inflammation, cardiac function, and the cellular defense systems that protect against damage. At the same time, we used computational methods to investigate whether existing drugs might potentially be repurposed to counter some of these effects.’

In addition, his team developed an open-access online database and analysis platform that brings together data from space biology studies and allows researchers to explore and analyse these data more efficiently.

‘Our aim was to create an infrastructure that supports research and helps accelerate new discoveries related to human health in space’ he went on to say.

Research shows space affects human body on level of cells

Asked about the conclusions of their research, he noted that one of the main conclusions of the research is that the space environment ‘appears to affect the human body more deeply than we may have previously thought, causing changes not only at the physiological level, but also at the level of cells and gene regulation.’

‘Microgravity, increased radiation exposure, and oxidative stress seem to create a biological pressure to which cells must adapt’ he pointed out.

Spyrou told CNA that ‘through our analyses, we identified specific genes and molecular pathways that are consistently affected, particularly those involved in cardiovascular function, inflammation, cellular repair, and the body’s natural defense mechanisms against stress.’

Another interesting finding, he continued, ‘is that some of these biological changes appear to persist even after returning from spaceflight conditions, suggesting that the effects of the space environment may leave a longer-lasting biological footprint than previously assumed.’

Of course, Spyrou said, these findings are based mainly on computational analyses and available experimental datasets, so further research and experimental validation are needed.

‘Nevertheless, we believe they provide a useful foundation for understanding how the human body responds to the challenges of spaceflight and which biological mechanisms deserve closer investigation in the future’ he pointed out.

Conclusions of research contribute to human health in space and on Earth

Asked how their findings can contribute to human health in space and on Earth, Spyrou said that ‘our findings add a small but meaningful piece to the broader effort to better understand how the human body responds to the demanding conditions of space.’

He explained that ‘through our analyses, we identified biological mechanisms and genes that appear to be consistently affected by microgravity, particularly in processes related to cardiovascular health and the immune system.’

This knowledge, he added, may help guide future strategies for monitoring and protecting astronaut health, especially as human presence in space becomes longer in duration.

At the same time, Spyrou continued, ‘the computational approaches we used to identify potential therapeutic interventions suggest possible directions for future research, although these ideas will require substantial experimental validation.’

Regarding Earth, he said that many of the biological mechanisms they studied – including inflammation, cellular stress responses, and cardiovascular dysfunction – are also involved in common diseases here on Earth.

‘For this reason, studying these processes in the extreme environment of space may offer useful insights into the biology of human disease more broadly’ he went on to say.

Spyrou said that ‘if there is one broader lesson from this work, it is that by studying the human body under extreme conditions, we may gain a deeper understanding of how it functions under normal conditions as well – and, over time, that knowledge may contribute to improving human health both in space and on Earth.’
