Cyprus’ trade deficit in January-September 2025 has recorded an increase compared to the corresponding period of 2024. According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the trade deficit was pound 5,884.2 mn in January-September 2025 compared to pound 4,787.0 mn in the corresponding period of 2024.

It adds that total imports of goods in September 2025 were pound 1,208.0 mn as compared to pound 986,3 mn in September 2024, recording an increase of 22.5%. Imports from other EU Member States were pound 612.5 mn and from third countries pound 595.5 mn, compared to pound 633.6 mn and pound 352.7 mn respectively in September 2024. Imports in September 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of pound 35.6 mn as compared to pound 30.4 mn in September 2024.

Total exports of goods in September 2025 were pound 497.4 mn as compared to pound 354.1 mn in September 2024, recording an increase of 40.5%. Exports to other EU Member States were pound 173.6 mn and to third countries pound 323,.8 mn, compared to pound 113.3 mn and pound 240.8 mn respectively in September 2024. Exports in September 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of pound 108.0 mn as compared to pound 42.2 mn in September 2024.

Total imports of goods in January-September 2025 amounted to pound 10,111.1 mn as compared to pound 8,768.0 mn in January-September 2024, recording an increase of 15.3%. Total exports of goods in January-September 2025 were pound 4,226.9 mn compared to pound 3,981.0 mn in January-September 2024, registering an increase of 6.2%.

The trade deficit was pound 5,884.2 mn in January-September 2025 compared to pound 4,787.0 mn in the corresponding period of 2024.

Meanwhile, total imports of goods amounted to pound 1,116.7 mn in August 2025 as compared to pound 981.8 mn in August 2024, recording an increase of 13.7%.

Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were pound 399.1 mn in August 2025 as compared to pound 193.9 mn in August 2024, recording an increase of 105.8%.

Domestic exports of industrial products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were pound 392.6 mn in August 2025 compared to pound 186.4 mn in August 2024. Domestic exports of agricultural products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were pound 5.8 mn in August 2025 compared to pound 6.8 mn in August 2024.

Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were pound 132.4 mn in August 2025 as compared to pound 96,9 mn in August 2024, recording an increase of 36.6%.

Main categories of exports of domestically produced goods for the period January-August 2025 (excl. stores and provisions for ships and aircraft), were mineral fuels and oils with value pound 1,667.6 mn, halloumi cheese with pound 262.9 mn and pharmaceutical products with pound 228.9 mn.

Minister of Defence, Vasilis Palmas, said on Monday that the Ministry has set the strengthening of research, development and innovation as a strategic priority, noting that within this framework, new projects will be announced in 2026, focusing on crucial technological sectors.

Palmas said that the Ministry of Defence will support every effort that promotes new technologies, products and services, contributing not only to defence, but also to the economic development of the country. He noted that the government wants to form a unified, functional defence innovation ecosystem, so that science, industry and the armed forces will collaborate with a common vision.

The Minister was addressing an event organised by the Armaments and Defence Capabilities’ Development Directorate of the Ministry of Defence, aiming to present the results of ‘ATHENA’ Action, as well as two innovative projects developed within its framework.

This Action, Palmas said, “has been implemented with the aim of utilizing the country’s know-how, creativity and technological capability, with the perspective of strengthening the defence and operational capabilities of the National Guard.”

In this context, he continued, two important projects are presented, “THESEAS” and “DroneEyE”, which constitute “tangible examples of how domestic scientific research, innovation and technological development can be transformed into a force multiplier and deterrent force.”

Palmas expressed certainty that these two projects are only the beginning and that they will become the basis on which we will build a modern, sustainable and dynamic ecosystem of Research and Innovation in the defence sector.

Our goal is clear and unambiguous, he said, adding that we seek to gradually strengthen the self-reliance and technological independence of the Republic of Cyprus.

Referring to future challenges he said that the Ministry of Defence has set the strengthening of research, development and innovation as a strategic priority, adding that “we are already promoting new programs, collaborations and initiatives, which will be the continuation of the “ATHENA” Action.

In this context, new projects will be announced within 2026, with an emphasis on crucial technological sectors, he concluded.

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday that very soon positive results are expected regarding COLA (Cost of Living Allowance).

Replying to questions by journalists upon his arrival to the 45th Annual General Assembly of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities, in Nicosia, President Christodoulides said that the great effort for reforms is ongoing.

Asked about pending reforms, in view of the Presidency of the Council of the EU, he said that “our great effort to reconstruct the state of the ’60s in order to move forward with bold reforms is continuing.”

‘This great effort is not over. We should and we dare to touch on difficult issues that we must change,’ he added.

Asked about the issue of COLA, President Christodoulides appeared optimistic that “very soon we will have positive results,’ noting that “there are no dead ends”.

Invited to say what the outcome was of the Foreign Minister’s visit to Israel, he replied that ‘when we have something to announce, we will do so”.

Negotiations on the future of COLA which have been ongoing for some months between employers, the trade unions and the government seemed to stall last week when employers rejected the latest compromise proposal.

The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, discussed further cooperation strengthening between Brazil and Cyprus in the areas of trade and investment during her meeting on Monday with the new Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Brazil to Cyprus, Ana Maria de Souza Bierrenbach.

According to a House statement, the meeting highlighted the traditionally friendly relations between Cyprus and Brazil, based on common principles and values, and their shared desire to further promote these relations, particularly at the parliamentary level, through enhanced cooperation and exchanges. In this context, Demetriou expressed her certainty that the recent establishment of corresponding Friendship Groups in the two parliaments will contribute positively in this direction.

As stated, the House President expressed her appreciation for Brazil’s principled stance on the Cyprus problem and efforts to resolve it, based on international law and the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions.

She also underlined the Greek Cypriot side’s commitment to the goal of resuming negotiations to achieve a solution that will lead to the reunification of Cyprus, expressing the hope that the next enlarged meeting will yield tangible results, while stressing at the same time, that the Turkish demand for a “two-state” solution is outside the agreed framework and will never be accepted.

It is noted that, for her part, the Brazilian Ambassador reaffirmed her country’s firm principled stance on the Cyprus issue and on efforts to resolve it.

In addition, she referred to Cyprus’ strategic position and the upcoming assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union by the Republic of Cyprus, emphasizing that the Cypriot Presidency is an important opportunity to further strengthen Brazil-Cyprus cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, as well as for further promoting cooperation between the EU and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). She expressed hope that the Free Trade Agreement will be concluded soon, possibly during the Cyprus Presidency.

Finally, views were exchanged on issues of mutual interest, such as strengthening women’s representation in politics and the economic challenges facing citizens around the world, which, as was emphasized, require collective and decisive action based on cooperation and solidarity, the statement concludes.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
