Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Gerapetritis, has said that the Turkish Cypriots’ will to choose Tufan Erhrman as their new leader opens a new chapter of hope and expectations for the island’s reunification on the basis of the resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council.

“A reunification that will guarantee peace and prosperity for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots within the European family,” he added, noting that the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, has undertaken tireless efforts, following a long period of inaction, to bring the Cyprus Issue back to the UN Secretary-General’s agenda and to resume the informal discussions.

“We look forward to working together on the next step in the upcoming informal meeting in a broader format. Divisions have no place in the modern turbulent international landscape. Cyprus must convey the universal message of synthesis and unity,” Gerapetritis noted.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

Implementation of the new Pact for the Mediterranean is at the core of Cyprus EU Presidency priorities, President Nikos Christodoulides said Monday, at the joint Press Conference following the MED9 Summit, in Slovenia.

The President noted that as the member state of the Union at the southeastern frontier, Cyprus is preparing to take the responsibility of the EU Presidency in just 71 days with full awareness of the challenges ahead and with a clear commitment to advance unity, reinforce our collective resilience, and elevate Mediterranean’s voice in the European debate.

“It is undeniable that the security and prosperity of the Mediterranean is directly linked to that of the European Union. An example of this is the situation in the Middle East, which is of course part of the Mediterranean and which directly affects developments in Europe in terms of security, in terms migration, energy prices, and so on”, he said.

Cyprus President referred to the meeting on Gaza taking place recently in Egypt, noting that we really hope, without underestimating the challenges ahead of us, “that it will lead to a new era of stability and prosperity, not only for Palestinians and Israelis, but also for the wider region”.

President Christodoulides said that Cyprus as the member state of the European Union, closest to Gaza, stands ready, as we did in the past, to contribute in a number of ways, which he presented to his colleagues earlier during the Summit.

Referring to the new Pact for the Mediterranean he described it as a historic, positive step forward and a chance to reinvigorate our relations with the southern neighborhood with tangible projects that promote connectivity, sustainability and regional stability.

He said that Cyprus EU Presidency will host a meeting of heads of states and government in Cyprus, in the framework of an informal European Council, on 23 and 24 April, bringing together the EU member states, European Union Institutions and the leaders of the countries of our region.

He referred to other issues of priorities for Cyprus Presidency such as migration, climate change and natural disasters and welcomed once again the announcement of the President of the Commission for the establishment of a European Regional Firefighting Hub, based in Cyprus, to also serve regional partners, as a concrete example of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.

President of the Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association (CYNMA), Aristides Chorattas, has been re-elected unopposed as President of the European Federation of Nurses Associations (EFN) for the two-year term 2025-2027.

According to a press release issued by the Association, Chorattas’ election took place during the Federation’s 121st General Assembly held in Dublin, Ireland.

‘The re-election of Dr. Chorattas constitutes an important distinction for Cyprus, but also for the Cyprus Association of Nurses and Midwives, as it recognizes the dynamism and prestige of the Cypriot nursing community at a European level,” the press release said.

His re-election, it added, reaffirms the abilities, experience and knowledge of Dr. Chorattas, which make him capable of successfully leading the European Organization and contributing to the achievement of its strategic goals.

The Price Index of Construction Materials for September 2025 reached 118.96 units (base year 2021=100), recording an increase of 1.44%, according to data published by the Statistical Service on Monday.

By main commodity category, increases were recorded in minerals (3.62%), mineral products (3.30%), products of wood, insulation materials, chemicals and plastics (1.05%) and electromechanical products (0.19%), whereas a decrease was observed in metallic products (-0.59%).

Compared to the previous month, a marginal decrease of 0.08% was recorded.

For the period January-September 2025, the index recorded an increase of 1.26% compared to the corresponding period of 2024.

Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, will participate on Tuesday in the deliberations of the General Affairs Council of the European Union (EU) that will take place in Luxembourg.

According to a press release issued by the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, during the Council meeting, Ministers will exchange views on the draft conclusions of the European Council to be held on 23-24 October in Brussels. The European Council is expected to address, among other issues, Ukraine, the Middle East, European defence and security, competitiveness, housing, migration, Moldova and the new Pact for the Mediterranean.

Ministers will also discuss the proposal for the new Multiannual Financial Framework for the period 2028-2034, focusing on horizontal aspects and European competitiveness.

They will also discuss the European Commission’s proposal, the European Shield of Democracy, which aims to strengthen the EU’s democratic resilience against contemporary threats such as disinformation, external interventions and the weakening of institutions, ahead of its adoption by the Commission.

The Council will also hold a hearing, on the values of the Union in Hungary and a debate will take place on the progress achieved on the simplification packages.

According to the press release, on the sidelines of the Council, the Deputy Minister will attend a working breakfast with Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine responsible for European Integration, Taras Kachka, which will be hosted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel.

She will also participate, on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in the 18th meeting of the Cooperation Council between the European Union and Uzbekistan, which will take place earlier in the day.

‘Responsible fiscal policy delivers results,’ the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides wrote in a post on X regarding the revised estimate by the Statistical Service for the 2024 GDP growth rate at 3.9%.

‘Responsible fiscal policy, free from populism and empty promises, delivers results. The GDP revision confirms that the economy remains strong and is expected to record growth of 3.5%-3.9% in 2025, with public debt below 60% of GDP,’ the President noted.

“The European Commission congratulates Tufan Erhrman on his election as leader of the Turkish Cypriot community,” the EC says in a brief statement issued on Monday evening and following a request from CNA during the briefing of accredited journalists.

“The European Union fully supports the resumption of negotiations for a viable and functional, comprehensive settlement within the framework of the United Nations and in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and in line with the principles on which the EU is founded and its acquis”, the announcement says.

“The European Union is ready to play an active role, with all means and tools at its disposal, in supporting all stages of the UN-led process for the reunification of Cyprus. In this regard the appointment of Mr Johannes Hahn as Special Envoy aims to contribute to the UN Secretary General’s effort to resume negotiations for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation in line with UNSCRs”, the EU Commission also notes.

The growth rate of the economy in 2024 is positive and is estimated at 3.9% in real terms, according to a revised estimate published on Monday by the Cyprus Statistical Service.

At current prices, the percentage change in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) amounts to 7.2%.

According to CYSTAT, regarding the production approach for the estimation of GDP in real terms, the positive growth rate is mainly attributed to the sectors: ‘Information and communication’, “Hotels and Restaurants”, ‘Construction’ and ‘Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles’.

GDP in real terms in 2024 stood at pound 29,419.9 billion. In current prices, GDP was at pound 34,770.2 billion.
