Shipping Dep. Ministry investigates Cyprus-flagged ship incident in Hormuz, Spokesman tells CNA

The Cyprus Shipping Deputy Ministry is investigating the incident involving a Cyprus-flagged container ship that came under attack in the Strait of Hormuz, Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), noting that there are no Cypriot nationals among the crew members.

The vessel involved is the Cyprus-flagged M/V GFS Galaxy, which, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the maritime security service operating under the UK’s Ministry of Defence, came under Iranian fire while sailing approximately nine nautical miles east of the Musandam Peninsula.

Asked about the incident, the Government Spokesperson said that “the incident is being investigated by the Shipping Deputy Ministry, which is in contact with the vessel’s management company and is taking all appropriate actions. At the same time, we are closely monitoring developments.”

He noted that the crew members are safe and have been transferred to a neighboring country, with the exception of one crew member who remains missing. Letymbiotis noted that there are no Cypriot nationals among the crew.

“Transit through the Strait of Hormuz is particularly difficult for all vessels, regardless of the flag they fly, especially under the conditions created by last night’s military operations,” he said.

President announces pound 61.7 million worth projects for public hospitals

The government has decided on additional projects worth pound 61.7 million for public hospitals, bringing total investment in public healthcare infrastructure to pound 206.7 million, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides announced on Sunday in a recorded video message.

The President said the decision follows the pound 145 million worth of infrastructure projects that have already been announced and are being implemented, including the construction of a new hospital in Polis Chrysochous.

He said the new projects include the second and third phases of the Athalassa Mental Health Centre, the establishment of a new Infectious Diseases Unit at Nicosia General Hospital, the upgrade of the Intensive Care Unit and the Internal Medicine Department at Larnaca General Hospital, together with new facilities for the Cardiology and Pulmonology Clinics, as well as major upgrading and maintenance works at Troodos Hospital.

‘Our investment in the health sector continues with planning, a clear strategy and projects across the free areas of Cyprus,’ the President said.

He added that the projects cover all districts and aim to improve services for patients, while also enhancing working conditions for healthcare professionals.

The President further stated that the government is able to proceed with such investments thanks to its ‘responsible fiscal policy,’ which, he said, allows the benefits of economic growth to be returned to the society through investments in healthcare, education, social policy and housing.

FM Kombos to raise illegal Turkey-pseudostate gas pipeline “MoU” at EU Foreign Affairs Council

Cyprus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Constantinos Kombos, departs for Brussels on Sunday to attend the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council on Monday, where he will raise the issue of the recently signed illegal “memorandum of understanding” between Turkey and the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus on the construction of a natural gas pipeline.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kombos will denounce Turkey’s latest illegal actions, referring to the illegal “memorandum of understanding.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus condemned on Friday the signing of the illegal ”memorandum of understanding” between Turkey and the secessionist entity in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus, for the development of an undersea natural gas pipeline which will connect Trkiye with the occupied areas.

In a press release the Ministry stressed that “the ‘memorandum’ in question, which was signed during the illegal visit of the Vice President of Trkiye, Cevdet Yilmaz to the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus, constitutes yet another manifestation of Turkey’s revisionist policy in the Eastern Mediterranean and is part of the ongoing efforts to consolidate faits accomplis of the occupation and the further integration of the occupied areas with Turkey.”

The Foreign Affairs Council is expected to discuss on Monday Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, the EU’s strategic approach to the Black Sea, and the situation in the Middle East. EU Foreign Ministers will also exchange views on EU-United Nations relations and developments in Sudan, the Ministry said.

On the sidelines of the Council, Kombos will participate in the third EU-Gulf Cooperation Council High-Level Forum on Regional Security and Cooperation.

Following the Council meeting, the Cypriot Foreign Minister will also attend the Second Ministerial Meeting of the Palestinian Donor Group (PDG), which will be co-chaired by European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica and Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa.

During his stay in Brussels, Kombos is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts, the Ministry added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

Cyprus issue remains a priority on the international agenda, Spokesperson says

The government is working towards ending the occupation and reunifying our homeland through a peaceful, viable, and functional settlement of the Cyprus issue, Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, said on Sunday, reaffirming that the government’s foremost objective is the reunification of Cyprus. He added that the current momentum surrounding the Cyprus issue confirms that our national cause remains a priority on the international agenda.

“We remain firmly committed to a comprehensive settlement based on the relevant United Nations resolutions, with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship, and a single international legal personality, in accordance with the EU acquis and the principles and values upon which the European Union is founded,” he said.

Addressing a memorial service for those who lost their lives during the 1974 coup in Cyprus, held at the Metropolitan Church of Saint Theodore in Paphos, Letymbiotis said the government is working with all its strength towards a solution that will lead to an independent and genuinely sovereign state, free from outdated systems of guarantees and the presence of occupying troops. He added that the heavy legacy we honour today compels us to strive unwaveringly for an end to the occupation, for the unity of the state, and for the safeguarding of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Cypriots.

“The current momentum surrounding the Cyprus issue confirms that our national cause remains a priority on the international agenda. The continued engagement of the United Nations Secretary-General, the efforts to reactivate the negotiating process, and the references to the role of the European Union carry significant political importance. The Republic of Cyprus is a member state of the European Union. The solution must be compatible with the EU acquis, the principles of the Union, human rights, and the very concept of a modern European state,” he stressed.

He added that Cyprus is a pillar of stability in a region marked by considerable geopolitical volatility, and that through a purposeful foreign policy, strategic partnerships with its allies, regional cooperation, its European identity, and the enhanced international presence and engagement of the Republic of Cyprus, “our struggle gains stronger support, greater credibility, and increased diplomatic leverage.”

Condemnation alone is not enough, he said. What is also needed is vision, planning, and strategy. “In the face of Turkey’s actions, we must build a strong network of alliances, without ever undermining our position and role within the European family through controversial choices,” the Government Spokesperson said.

“The Cyprus of 2026 is not the Cyprus of 1974, which found itself wounded, betrayed, and alone,” Letymbiotis said. Today, the Republic of Cyprus stands strong, participates in European decision-making, enhances its international standing, strengthens its cooperation with countries in the region and strategic partners, and makes full use of its role as a factor of stability, security, and humanitarian action. “This progress does not erase the pain of occupation. It transforms it into a source of strength in pursuing our rightful claims,” he said.

With reverence and unwavering dedication, we will continue to devote every ounce of our strength to building a Cyprus that will stand as a symbol of peace, stability, and progress in the region, the Spokesperson said. He added that this great national effort requires unity, seriousness, and political maturity, which does not mean silence or the absence of disagreement. “Democracy requires dialogue, counter-argument, and criticism,” he said.

Referring to the coup of 1974, the Government Spokesperson said it was not a momentary mistake of history but a crime against democracy and the homeland, the culmination of a course of division, blindness, intolerance, and political extremism. It was the moment, he continued, when Cyprus was wounded by the hand of its own brothers before suffering, a few days later, the premeditated blow of the Turkish invasion.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

After informal meetings in 2025, followed by a hiatus of several months, deliberations are underway for a new meeting in broader format to be held, as the term of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres nears its end. María Angela Holguín, Guterres’ Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is tasked to engage with the parties.

Twenty-member National Guard contingent on July 14 in Paris parade which Cyprus President will attend, CNA learns

A 20-member ceremonial contingent drawn from the branches and corps of the National Guard will take part on Tuesday, 14 July, in the military parade in Paris marking France’s national day (Bastille Day), which will be attended, among other dignitaries, by President Nikos Christodoulides at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, according to Cyprus News Agency (CNA) sources.

The National Guard previously participated in France’s Bastille Day parade in Paris in 2008 with a six-member contingent, while in 2019 it took part in Poland’s National Day parade with three members. This year marks the first time it will participate in such a parade with a significantly larger contingent.

According to CNA sources, the contingent comprises of 18 officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs), along with two alternates, who are already in Paris taking part in rehearsals for the parade. National Guard Commander Chief Lieutenant General, Emmanouel Theodorou, will travel to France on Monday together with the President of the Republic.

The participation of the contingent follows an invitation from France and takes place within the framework of Cyprus-France military cooperation.

Pension reform to address pensioners’ modern needs, says Spokesman

Cyprus’ planned pension reform will address the modern needs of pensioners while safeguarding the sustainability of the social insurance system, Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, said on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters in Paphos after a memorial service for those killed during the 1974 coup in Cyprus, Letymbiotis described pension reform as the government’s next major reform initiative.

He said President Nikos Christodoulides, together with the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance and the Ministry of Finance, has prepared a comprehensive framework for the reform.

“The objective of any state is to strengthen its public finances and maintain a strong, resilient economy,” Letymbiotis said, adding that this provides the solid foundation needed to support measures aimed at increasing citizens’ disposable income.

He noted that the government had already implemented a series of measures, including the tax reform, two increases to the Guaranteed Minimum Income and the full restoration of the Cost-of-Living Allowance (CoLA) after years of partial application.

“The next important step is a pension reform that takes into account the modern needs of our pensioners while ensuring a resilient social insurance system,” he said.

Letymbiotis added that the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance has already presented the executive’s main proposals to social partners. Their views, together with those of political parties, will be incorporated into the final reform package to ensure it delivers tangible benefits for pensioners as soon as possible, he added.

Asked about the timetable, he said the government expects to submit the relevant legislation to the House of Representatives after September, once the consultation process has been completed.

He stressed that the government views public consultation not as a formal procedure but as a substantive tool for improving legislation, citing the tax reform process as an example.
