Rumesh Tharanga claims Diamond League victory in Switzerland

Sri Lanka’s rising javelin star Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage continued his remarkable 2026 season by securing first place in the men’s javelin throw at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Tharanga produced an outstanding throw of 88.14 metres to claim victory in a closely contested competition. His performance saw him finish just nine centimetres ahead of India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who recorded 88.05 metres to take second place.

The Lausanne victory further strengthens Tharanga’s growing reputation on the international athletics stage. The 23-year-old Sri Lankan has been one of the most consistent javelin throwers on the circuit this season, collecting victories at several major competitions.

His latest success also marked his third consecutive Diamond League victory, underlining his impressive consistency against some of the world’s best throwers. Tharanga has also accumulated valuable points in the 2026 Diamond League series and has already secured qualification for the Diamond League Final.

The Lausanne triumph comes after an extraordinary campaign for the Sri Lankan athlete. Earlier this year, Tharanga produced a spectacular 92.62-metre throw at the Rome Diamond League, setting a new Sri Lankan national record and establishing one of the outstanding performances of the 2026 season.

He also created history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, winning Sri Lanka’s first-ever Commonwealth Games athletics gold medal. His winning throw of 89.75 metres secured another major milestone in what has become a breakthrough year for the young athlete.

Tharanga’s victory in Lausanne adds another prestigious achievement to his rapidly growing international résumé. His ability to consistently challenge and defeat elite competitors, including Olympic champion Chopra, has placed him firmly among the leading names in world javelin.

Minister’s remarks spark debate over official world rankings

Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage has come under criticism from sports journalists after questioning media reports about Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage’s position in the World Athletics rankings.

The Minister made the remarks following Rumesh’s impressive victory at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne. In a social media post, he suggested that some media outlets appeared pleased to report that the Sri Lankan athlete had fallen to second place in the world rankings, while insisting that Rumesh remained the world’s No. 1 athlete in the eyes of Sri Lanka.

However, sports journalists have challenged the Minister’s comments, arguing that the media had simply reported the latest official World Athletics rankings. According to the current rankings, Germany’s Julian Weber occupies the No. 1 position, with Rumesh listed at No. 2.

Journalists also stressed that reporting the official rankings should not be interpreted as criticism of Rumesh or a lack of support for his achievements. The debate has since drawn attention to the importance of accurately distinguishing between an athlete’s individual competition results and the official world rankings.

SriLankan Airlines empowers talented Sri Lankan student in ShakthiSAT Mission project

SriLankan Airlines is making Mission ShakthiSAT possible for Sri Lanka’s Official Student Representative, Seneesa Goonewardena, and ShakthiSAT (Devi) Ambassador for Sri Lanka Dr. Sulochana Segera, by sponsoring their travel to India to participate in the groundbreaking project that will bring together young girls from 108 countries to design and build a satellite for the first time collaboratively.

Seneesa Goonewardena was selected following a highly competitive national selection process that engaged more than 200 Sri Lankan schoolgirls in specialised STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education programs designed to introduce them to space technology. The students were taught 21 modules covering the fundamentals of CubSATs, their programming, mathematics, and operations, together with practical exercises. The program was launched in Sri Lanka by Space Kidz India Founder and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Srimathy Kesan, who is recognised internationally for leading one of the world’s largest educational satellite and rocket programs.

Mission ShakthiSAT marks the world’s first global all-girls lunar satellite mission. It will bring together 12,000 girls from around the world to collaborate in the design and engineering of a 12U lunar satellite. As part of the program, three payload engineering models will be designed and integrated. The international payload development effort will involve partners from several countries, including the University of South Alabama and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the United States, Shamal Space in Brazil, SMW Engineering in Lesotho, the Egyptian Space Agency in Egypt and a university in Australia. In this multinational endeavour, Mission ShakthiSAT aims to foster the unity of nations through education, engineering, peace, and scientific collaboration, while inspiring the next generation of women leaders in aerospace and emerging technologies.

Starc claims 10 to demolish Bangladesh in two days

Australia bounced back from the Darwin loss and levelled the Test series against Bangladesh with an innings-and-51-run win in under two days. Mitchell Starc led the onslaught with his fourth 10-wicket haul which made it the second-shortest Test on Australian soil.

Starc finished with 10 for 51, as Nathan Lyon wrapped up Bangladesh with two quick wickets shortly after tea. Having being bundled for 64 and 95, it became the first time Bangladesh got bowled out for under 100 in both innings of a Test, while Australia’s 210 is the fourth-lowest total in an innings win.

Bangladesh had taken the last two Australia wickets in the morning but after the hosts added 45 runs, led by Lyon’s unbeaten 32. Australia’s total of 210 gave them a lead of 146 which Bangladesh couldn’t get close to.

Starc was relentless again from the start of Bangladesh’s second innings. Shadman Islam was squared up once again, giving Marnus Labuschagne a simple catch at point. Mominul Haque was bowled next ball, leaving a fuller length ball that nipped in to clip his off stump. Tanzid Hasan holed out at deep fine leg, when he hooked Pat Cummins in his first over.

Najmul Hossain Shanto counterattacked from the other end, hitting Starc for five boundaries which included four good drives down the ground and a streaky edge through the slips. Looking to force the issue after lunch, Shanto chipped Lyon right down long-off’s throat, for 31. Litton Das was next to go, Starc getting him to edge to third slip for his third duck in a row. Litton didn’t score a single run in the Test series.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz edged a wide one from an otherwise parsimonious Cummins, who then got Hasan Mahmud gloving a sharp bouncer to short leg. Starc started his third spell with Taijul Islam’s wicket, to complete his match 10-wicket haul.

Bangladesh lasted just three balls after the tea break. Lyon picked up his second wicket when Taskin Ahmed edged one to Steven Smith at first slip. It was his 219th catch, taking him to the top of the list of most Test catches, level with Joe Root. Starc then took his fourth catch in the innings when Shoriful Islam skied Lyon towards point, to end the Bangladesh innings.

Australia began the day with just two wickets in hand in their first innings, but Cameron Green and Lyon made the best of their situation. They put on 38 runs for the ninth wicket, with Green reaching an important half-century. He struck the ball nicely in the morning session, before a Shoriful yorker floored Green to trap him lbw. Lyon then smacked Taskin for a four and a six in a 17-run over before Josh Hazlewood became the last wicket to fall.

Shoriful grabbed career-best figures of 7 for 47 in a match that will otherwise be remembered for Starc’s haul that made it an otherwise forgettable game for Bangladesh.

Govt. launches data platforms for fisheries, plantation sectors via IDAT Program

The Government has advanced a key national digital transformation priority through the launch and handover of Decision Support Systems for the fisheries and plantation sectors under the Inclusive Digital Agriculture Transformation Program, known as IDAT. The Government-led initiative is designed to strengthen how public institutions collect, integrate and use data to guide policy, planning, resource allocation and service delivery.

The Fisheries Sector Decision Support System brings together data from six Government institutions: the National Aquaculture Development Authority, Ceylon Fisheries Harbours Corporation, Ceylon Fisheries Corporation, Cey-Nor Foundation, North Sea Ltd. and the Central Fish Market (Colombo).

The platform provides integrated datasets, dashboards, visual analytics, reports, monitoring tools and alerts to support decisions relating to fisheries production, aquaculture, market intelligence, operational performance, sustainability and resource management. Its development included institutional consultations, system design, analytical development, validation, capacity building, user acceptance testing and production-readiness activities.

‘The Fisheries DSS represents an important step in modernising sector governance through reliable data and evidence-based decision-making. By bringing institutional data together, the platform strengthens planning, monitoring, forecasting and resource management across the fisheries sector. This initiative will strengthen institutional efficiency, transparency and responsiveness while supporting Sri Lanka’s broader digital transformation agenda,’ said Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ministry Secretary Dr. B.K. Kolita Kamal Jinadasa.

The Plantation Sector Decision Support System integrates information from the Sri Lanka Tea Board, Tea Small Holdings Development Authority, Rubber Development Department, Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka, Coconut Cultivation Board, Coconut Development Authority and Sri Lanka Cashew Corporation.

‘The Plantation DSS marks an important step in strengthening evidence-based governance, enabling institutions to make better-informed decisions through integrated data and analytics. The platform will strengthen institutional coordination, operational efficiency and long-term planning across Sri Lanka’s plantation sector. This initiative demonstrates how collaboration and digital public infrastructure can support a more competitive, resilient and sustainable plantation economy,’ said Plantation and Community Infrastructure Ministry Secretary Gunadasa Samarasinghe.

Through a single Government-owned platform, decision-makers can monitor the performance of tea, rubber, coconut and cashew, assess district-level trends, review exports, track investments and subsidy programs, understand climate and weather-related impacts and identify areas requiring timely intervention. The platform is intended to help Government institutions better target programs and investments while monitoring progress against national development priorities.

The progress achieved through IDAT was recently highlighted during a visit to Sri Lanka by a Gates Foundation delegation. With Government stakeholders, the delegation reviewed demonstrations of the Fisheries and Plantation Decision Support System dashboards, showcasing the progress made by public institutions in moving from fragmented data and reporting towards more integrated, data-driven planning and decision-making.

The IDAT Program reflects the Government’s wider commitment to developing trusted digital public infrastructure and strengthening evidence-based governance across agriculture and fisheries. Both platforms have been formally handed over as Government-owned digital public assets, with institutional ownership, capacity building and continuous data use incorporated into their operating models.

Commenting on the initiatives, Digital Economy Ministry Secretary Waruna Sri Dhanapala said, ‘Digital technologies, interoperable data systems and advanced analytics are becoming fundamental to modern governance. The Fisheries and Plantation Sector DSSs demonstrate how Digital Public Infrastructure can strengthen evidence-based decision-making, improve institutional coordination and enhance service delivery across strategically important sectors. Through IDAT, we are supporting a Government-led approach that uses trusted data and digital systems to advance economic resilience, sustainability, inclusive development and Sri Lanka’s broader digital transformation.’

The program was delivered by the IDAT Consortium, bringing together the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure, the Ministry of Digital Economy, Sarvodaya, PwC, MillenniumIT ESP and Connect to Care (CTC). The consortium members contributed expertise across sector engagement, institutional assessments, data governance, systems architecture, technology development, analytics, capacity building, change management and operational readiness.

Connect to Care Inclusive Digital Agriculture Transformation (IDAT) Program Project Director Major General (Retd.) Chandana Priyantha Arangalla said: ‘Our responsibility as the Program Management Office was to support coordination across a complex institutional environment and help ensure that the Government’s objectives remained central throughout delivery. The platforms are now owned by the institutions they were designed to serve. Their long-term value will come from continued Government leadership, trusted data and consistent use in everyday decision-making.’

The Fisheries and Plantation Sector Decision Support Systems represent an important foundation for Sri Lanka’s continued digital agriculture transformation. By connecting institutions around reliable information and shared national priorities, the program supports a transition from fragmented reporting to coordinated action, and from data collection to measurable public impact.

Kaspersky GReAT expert details risks when blind trust in AI moves faster than verification

Modern AI agents have become a new supply chain layer and how cybercriminals are exploiting the gap between the chain of trust between people, AI agents, tools, and external code, according to security researchers.

This was revealed at the Kaspersky’s Asia Pacific (APAC) Cyber Security Weekend in Guangzhou, China recently.

With the current speed of Artificial Intelligence (AI) development known to speed up and improve enterprises’ productivity, Kaspersky researcher underscored the dangers of ‘blind trust’ and lack of verification on AI, and how cyberattackers exploit these gaps with no vulnerability but with just trust.

Kaspersky’s GReAT (Global Research and Analysis Team) Security Researcher Sojun Ryu said: ‘AI has advanced at a tremendous pace over the past few years. In its early stages, AI took the form of tools that could generate, summarise, and draft content. The next phase brought copilots, embedding AI directly into workflows to assist, suggest and guide users as they worked. Fast forward to now, we have entered the era of AI agents, which can plan, use tools, call APIs, and act autonomously. While humans remain present to verify each stage of an AI-driven development, we see more and more incidents where verification is often overlooked to maximise productivity, and when speed outpaces verification, that speed can also amplify risks.

How cybercriminals exploit blind trust in AI agents

Recently, Kaspersky GReAT researchers found 92,000 malicious attacks in 2026 disguised as AI services. Almost half (49%) of them were disguised as ChatGPT applications, while Claude and Gemini each represented 18%.

These legitimate applications are essential for working with AI agents, and they form the starting point of the development environment. However, attackers exploit that trust by distributing fake versions specifically designed to target those users.

In addition, researchers identified over 15,000 malware samples disguised as agentic AI software. They were classified as trojans, spyware, exploits, downloaderers, droppers, and backdoors – all containing actual malicious functionality. This means that simply running one of these disguised applications could allow attackers to steal internal information and establish command-and-control access.

Ryu also detailed the dangers that overshadow AI use and developments: open-source packages.

‘The truth is that developers need open source. AI needs open source. And attackers understand this very well, which is why software supply chain attacks targeting open-source packages remain one of the most significant threats. Across multiple open-source ecosystems-especially npm and PyPI-major compromises spread in rapid succession. Since the middle of last year, we have seen at least ten large-scale attack campaigns, and the pace continues to rise. From attacks on highly popular packages such as Axios to self-propagating worms such as Shai-Hulud, these campaigns are beginning to shake the foundations of the open-source ecosystem,’ added Ryu.

The March 2026 supply chain attack involving Axios highlighted how cybercriminals are increasingly targeting trusted software components to reach a large number of victims. Axios, one of the world’s most widely used JavaScript libraries, is downloaded over 100 million times every week and is used by over 170,000 software packages. After compromising the lead maintainer’s computer, the attacker gained access to the project’s npm account and published malicious versions of the library.

Although the compromised packages were available for only about three hours, they were downloaded by hundreds of devices during that time. The incident demonstrates how a single compromise in a trusted open-source project can quickly spread across the software supply chain, reinforcing the importance of verifying software components and monitoring for suspicious changes.

‘According to our survey last year, 31% of enterprise businesses had been impacted by a supply chain attack. This reflects how deeply open-source software is embedded in enterprise development environments. We should expect open-source ecosystems to remain a major target for attackers because it’s their door to crack into the intelligence inside the enterprises,’ he added.

How to reduce blind trust without sacrificing productivity

With productivity driving not only operational efficiency but also companies’ profitability, Ryu listed practical ways on how to keep enterprise productivity without sacrificing security. He underscored the need to define clear trusted development zones between external content and internal development assets. That should harden not only the IDE (Integrated Development Environment), but also extensions, workspaces, and agent permissions.

He also highlighted the need to control the paths through which software enters the environment and maintain visibility into every activity. The objective from which is not to add more approval prompts, but rather, to make the secure path the easiest and most efficient path.

Kaspersky, for its part, is also contributing to building a secure development environment and workflow for developers and IT security professionals alike. In particular, Kaspersky GReAT monitors all the open-source software mentioned earlier and provides a feed that flags any vulnerable or malicious components.

Kaspersky’s elite team of researchers also audited GitHub Actions workflows using Kaspersky Container Security capability to ensure a secure build path and discovered that over 250,000 potential misconfigurations in continuous-integration/continuous-delivery (CI/CD) processes, underscoring the widespread adoption of insecure configuration practices.

‘As a security researcher, I strongly believe that we should shift security not only toward earlier stages of software development, but also from protecting deployed systems to securing the environments where software is created. Because when trust is verified before execution, organisations move faster, not slower. Most importantly, security fails when we prioritise speed, money, and delivery over protection and visibility,’ Ryu added.

Fixing digital stethoscope’s blind spot

In my previous column, AI’s next big promise: Tackle inequity issues before using it , I argued that beneath the brilliant veneer of artificial intelligence lies a structural failure I termed the ‘AI Divide’. This divide manifests across corporate, global, and social frameworks, threatening to worsen existing historical injustices rather than solve them. While that warning dealt with macroeconomic infrastructure and the uneven distribution of digital public goods, there is one sector where the AI Divide ceases to be an abstract economic problem and becomes an immediate matter of life and death: healthcare.

Human doctor still master

The integration of Machine Learning (ML) into clinical settings is fundamentally reshaping medicine through unprecedented computational efficiency. AI possesses an extraordinary capacity to synthesise massive volumes of unstructured biological data, rapidly summarising a sprawling “big picture” into actionable data points for rapid clinical decision-making-a feat of pure data processing that human cognitive limits render impossible.

However, an essential ethical qualification must be maintained: the digital system does not replace clinical judgement. The human doctor remains the ultimate decision-maker, interpreting the technical variables generated by the algorithm to chart the patient’s treatment. In this modern clinical architecture, the physician is still the absolute master, and AI serves strictly as an advanced facilitator.

Two AI leaps: Ambient and Agentic AI

To understand how this facilitation operates today, we must examine the frontline frontier of healthcare analysis, which has split into two core paradigms: Ambient AI and Agentic AI. Ambient AI acts as an invisible, passive observer in the clinical room, automatically transcribing doctor-patient conversations, structuring electronic health records, and lifting the heavy administrative burden off exhausted medical staff. Agentic AI, conversely, operates with autonomous intent; it acts as an active clinical partner that evaluates real-time telemetry, flags early signs of sepsis, predicts patient deterioration, and suggests complex pharmaceutical adjustments. This is flagged in Figure I.

Sri Lanka’s low AI status

This technological leap highlights a stark AI Divide between advanced Western or East Asian economies and nations classified as “Low AI,” such as Sri Lanka. Domestic hospital networks have yet to meaningfully invest in high-AI clinical infrastructure. The State sector operates under severe budgetary constraints, with the Health Ministry budget standing at about 2% of GDP, begging for more resources every year. This leaves underfunded Government hospitals with little funding to procure expensive software licences or high-performance server clusters.

Meanwhile, the private healthcare sector lacks the market incentive to pursue these heavy capital investments. Private providers continue to generate excellent profit margins from their existing infrastructure by capitalising on the inelastic, soaring domestic demand for healthcare services. The resultant aloofness to new investment shifts a heavy economic burden directly onto citizens; historically, private out-of-pocket spending has driven over 43% of total healthcare expenditures in the country despite a public system that is technically free at the point of delivery.

WHO should support low AI countries

For a developing nation like Sri Lanka to cross this chasm, it must execute a dual-track strategy: simultaneously investing in underlying digital infrastructure and systematically training healthcare providers to utilise these algorithmic techniques safely. This capacity-building requires substantial time, meaning the technological divide will inevitably persist and widen in the medium term.

In this challenging environment, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has a vital role to play. The WHO must move beyond issuing abstract ethical guidelines and, instead, actively coordinate the upgrading of clinical AI capacity within developing countries. Unified global action is urgently required to transform medical AI from an exclusive luxury of wealthy nations into a globally accessible public utility.

Anatomy of healthcare bias: Data poverty and myth of generalisability

To understand how a mathematical model becomes prejudiced, one must dismantle the data infrastructure upon which modern AI is constructed. Machine learning models require millions of data points to learn to recognise diseases. However, biomedical data is severely afflicted by what global health experts term “health data poverty”.

For generations, clinical trials, genetic mapping, and diagnostic imagery have disproportionately favoured specific demographic categories. Historically, clinical research participants have been overwhelmingly white, male, and resident in wealthy urban centres, leaving racial minorities, women, and rural populations severely underrepresented. When software engineers train a diagnostic AI on these imbalanced datasets, the algorithm develops a flawed baseline for what constitutes human health.

This imbalance strips away what technologists call the “generalisability” of the algorithm. Unlike physical medical hardware-such as a scalpel or an X-ray machine-which functions identically regardless of the patient’s background, software algorithms are context-dependent and highly brittle. They exhibit high accuracy within controlled research environments populated by the majority demographic but suffer performance degradation when deployed in ethnically or socioeconomically diverse settings.

Poverty of AI research data in low AI countries

Consider the geography of AI research data. A landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association examined dozens of publications comparing human diagnostic accuracy against digital systems. The researchers discovered that the bulk of the clinical data used to train American medical AI models originated from hospitals in just three States: California, New York, and Massachusetts .

An algorithm optimised for patients visiting elite clinics in Boston or San Francisco cannot easily generalise its findings to a rural farmer in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province or a factory worker in an industrial town in America’s Midwest. The physical realities of disease manifestation, co-morbidities, and environmental factors are completely lost. When a model relies entirely on association-based learning, it resorts to “shortcut learning,” mistaking regional data collection protocols or flawed clinical habits for absolute medical truth. The dangerous bias loop is elaborated in Figure II.

Real-world collateral: When code costs lives

The danger of biased medical AI is not a hypothetical anxiety for the future. The clinical arena is already littered with examples of algorithms that have failed marginalised patient groups with devastating consequences.

1. Dermatological failure

One of the clearest manifestations of visual dataset bias occurs in automatic skin cancer detection. Computer-vision algorithms trained to identify melanomas have achieved astonishing success rates, often outperforming the wisdom of qualified dermatologists. However, independent evaluations revealed that these systems performed with alarming inaccuracy when presented with images of darker skin tones. Why? Because the public and private image repositories used to train the software were overwhelmingly dominated by examples of fair skin. By treating light skin as the normative default, the AI struggled to differentiate between benign dyschromia and malignant lesions on darker skin, directly increasing the risk of delayed care or catastrophic misdiagnosis for millions of non-white patients.

2. Economic proxy trajectory

Algorithmic bias does not only crop up through visual data; it can embed itself within electronic health records and administrative workflows. A famous case study involved a widely deployed commercial algorithm used by major hospital systems to manage the care of millions of chronic patients. The software was explicitly designed to assign a “risk score” to individuals, identifying which patients were sickest and required enrolment in intensive, high-touch medical management programs . Refer to Figure III for details.

The algorithm systematically assigned lower risk scores to Black patients, recommending healthier white patients for premium care programs ahead of much sicker Black individuals. The flaw lay in the developers’ choice of a data proxy. Rather than measuring physiological markers of disease severity directly, the AI was programmed to use historical healthcare expenditure as a proxy for illness, under the assumption that a patient who costs more must be sicker.

The system ignored systemic economic inequalities. Due to historic barriers to healthcare access, lower average incomes, and systemic under-insurance, Black patients spent significantly less on healthcare than white patients with identical clinical conditions. The AI mathematically misinterpreted lower spending as a sign of health, automating a loop where affluent patients were showered with additional medical attention while vulnerable patients were pushed to the back of the queue.

3. Systemic localised disparities in Sri Lankan contexts

In Sri Lanka, the danger of data omission manifests distinctly through regional epidemiological crises. Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) now comprise a staggering 85% of the national disease burden, characterised by an aggressive rise in cardiovascular mortality, diabetes, and genitourinary illnesses. Furthermore, rural agricultural regions suffer heavily from chronic kidney disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu). In endemic areas like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, urinary tract and kidney diseases represent the leading cause of in-hospital mortality. Yet over 46% of Sri Lanka’s total current health expenditure remains concentrated strictly within the Western Province.

If international tech firms design predictive diagnostic tools using data exclusively harvested from highly resourced Colombo tertiary care centres or Western private hospital setups, the resulting software will remain fundamentally blind to the environmental, toxicological, and biochemical realities facing rural farming communities. A predictive AI that equates health tracking with standard urban lifestyle data will fail to detect early-stage CKDu or localised diabetes patterns in rural agrarian populations where diagnostic under-testing remains high. The resulting AI models will inadvertently automate a cycle where medical attention and advanced care remain heavily weighted towards affluent urban networks, leaving the rural poor to face late-stage, symptomatic organ failures without timely warnings.

Three paradoxes of healthcare AI

The crisis of bias in medical technology reveals three core paradoxes that policymakers and health administrators must urgently confront:

Healing the system: Technical and structural therapeutics

We cannot simply abandon artificial intelligence in medicine. The sheer volume of contemporary biological data requires computational assistance, and when designed ethically, AI can expand clinical access across the globe. However, to ensure that this technological revolution minimises health disparities rather than aggravating them, we must implement a comprehensive framework of systemic corrections.

Mandating data audits and algorithmic redetections

Food and drug regulatory bodies across the globe-such as national healthcare authorities and global networks-must change how they evaluate software as a medical device (SaMD). It is no longer sufficient for an AI developer to prove that their system achieves a 95% accuracy score on a generic, aggregated test set. Regulations must mandate strict, modality-agnostic algorithmic auditing.

Platforms like the recently developed Generalised Attribute Utility and Detectability-Induced Bias Testing (G-AUDIT) framework point a way forward. These technical auditing tools automatically parse medical datasets across distinct modalities-including imaging, electronic health record text, and tabular ICU data-to detect if a model is relying on shortcut learning or hidden patient demographic attributes to make its predictions . If an AI system displays a statistically significant performance drop when evaluating minority subgroups, it must be denied regulatory clearance for clinical deployment.

Rewriting mathematics of loss functions

When training an algorithm, data scientists can introduce mathematical constraints that penalise the system if its error rates diverge across different demographic subsets. Rather than maximising overall accuracy, the objective function of medical AI must prioritise equity and minimax fairness, ensuring that the model’s error rate is minimised for the least fortunate demographic cohort.

Furthermore, as demonstrated by computational studies, developers can utilise specific data-correction algorithms to compensate for historical under-testing. When the researcher-imposed data bias is mathematically neutralised, standard machine-learning models can accurately identify conditions like sepsis across all patient cohorts, performing on par with an idealised, perfectly balanced real-world clinical dataset.

Democratising deployment infrastructure

Mirroring the arguments from my previous article on the AI Divide, medical AI must not become a proprietary weapon of wealthy pharmaceutical corporations or elite private hospitals. If AI knowledge is managed as a “Global Public Good,” global development entities like the WHO, the World Bank, and regional development institutions can establish decentralised, open-source repositories of diverse clinical data.

By funding internet access, server installations, and specialised training programs in emerging economies, these multilateral financial bodies can ensure that local health institutions can adapt AI software to their unique regional epidemiological conditions, dismantling the digital colonial architecture that characterises the current tech landscape.

Living call for clinical vigilance

Just as medical students take the Hippocratic Oath, promising to “do no harm,” modern computer scientists and health administrators must adopt an equally rigorous ethical framework before deploying algorithms to the hospital bedside.

We stand at a defining historical juncture. If we inject unvetted, biased artificial intelligence into our clinical ecosystems, we will lock in healthcare inequities for generations to come, creating a permanent algorithmic underclass whose sickness is systematically underestimated by the digital stethoscopes of the modern world. We must choose to address these structural issues now, ensuring that the great promise of digital medicine becomes a healing asset for all of humanity, leaving no one isolated in the dark.

Padikkal hits second century but Sri Lanka fight back

Sri Lanka dismissed half the Indian side for 300 on the opening day of the second cricket Test at the SSC grounds yesterday, and may feel that they have done enough to prevent the opposition from running away with the game.

Sri Lanka could have been in a better position had they not given two reprieves to the century maker of the first Test Devdutt Padikkal at 0 and 1 by Sonal Dinusha at backward point and Dhananjaya de Silva at slip, although neither chance was straightforward. Padikkal made Sri Lanka pay by going onto make a century – 117 off 193 balls (12 fours), his second of the series which more or less would have cemented his place at number three in the Indian batting line-up. He added 120 for the third wicket with Shubman Gill before the partnership was broken in the penultimate ball before tea when the Indian captain played a loose cut to be out for 50 (108 balls, 6 fours).

Rishabh Pant faced one ball before tea and survived a big lbw appeal, with ball-tracking showing the delivery would have missed leg stump. But soon afterwards on resumption Pant was struck on his wrist and was forced to retire. A lovely delivery from Keshara Nuwantha brought to an end Padikkal’s innings. Ravindra Jadeja played a battling innings but was dismissed late in the day against the second new ball when he shouldered arms to Asitha Fernando and saw his stumps disturbed with his score on 43.

Dhruv Jurel looked solid in the 41 minutes he has been at the wicket for seven and India will be hoping that Pant would return and boost their total further. Asitha Fernando’s 3-wicket haul kept Sri Lanka in with a chance, and they will have to maximize the second new ball which is five overs old if they are not to let India run away towards a big score.

Openers Lokesh Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal both got starts, but both failed to convert it into bigger knocks in what was a fairly even opening session of Test cricket. After opting to bat, India’s openers made a steady start and looked comfortable for most of the first hour. Rahul appeared well set before chasing a delivery outside off from Lahiru Kumara and edged it through to the wicketkeeper just before the first drinks break.

Jaiswal, in the meanwhile, adopted an aggressive approach and struck three boundaries in an over from Fernando, only to be bowled in the same over for 45 (53 balls, 9 fours). Both Jaiswal and Fernando had an altercation and exchanged words during an intense moment on the field which is likely to come under the scrutiny of match referee Andy Pycroft.

Army SC continues domination of Tier B 50-over tournament

Army SC continued to dominate the Tier B 50-over tournament when they logged in their fourth consecutive win beating Galle CC by seven wickets at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Cricket Stadium, Hambantota yesterday to retain top spot in Group B.

Army SC made light of Galle CC’s total of 206 by scoring 207-3 to win with 76 balls to spare. An opening partnership of 93 by Ashan Sudarshana (40) and Pathum Dilshan (47) set the stage for their successful run chase. Manushka Samith (42) and Sukitha Devthilina (49*) completed the formalities for the win. Only captain Amith Eranda batted with any authority for Galle CC scoring 50 off 85 balls (2 fours).

Chilaw Marians CC kept pace with Army SC with their third win in as many matches beating Sebastianites by 25 runs (DLS method) at the SLLDC grounds, Kirimandala. In a game reduced to 40 overs, Chilaw Marians CC batting first scored 210-6 with skipper Kasun Vidura (59 off 54 balls, 4 fours) and Gimhan Rasanjana (68 off 55 balls, 7 fours, 2 sixes) putting together a partnership of 108 off 87 balls. Sebastianites chasing a revised target of 165 were dismissed for 139.

Unbeaten Navy SC suffered their first defeat in four matches when they lost to Negombo CC by 70 runs at Welisara. Chasing a target of 286 Navy SC collapsed to 91-6 and it was contributions from the lower order that saw them to their final score of 215. Koshan Jayawickrama top scored with 52 off 51 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes). Half-centuries from Dinitha Lochana (59 off 91 balls, 5 fours, 1 six), Rashmika Mevan (66 off 79 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) and captain Dimuth Sandaruwan (50 off 37 balls, 5 fours) made up Negombo CC’s total of 285.

Following three losses on the trot Kandy Customs SC finally ended their barren run with a seven-wicket win over United Southern SC at Army grounds, Dombagoda. Off-spinners Kosala Ravindu (4/21) and Kaveesha Induwara (3/32) curtailed United Southern SC for 112. Kandy Customs SC knocked the runs off in 25 overs with opener Lahiru Attanayake contributing 71* off 76 balls (9 fours, 3 sixes).

Kurunegala SC ran up the highest total of the day – 315-6 and beat Ragama CC by 144 runs at the Welagedara Stadium. Kaveen Bandara struck a splendid century (105 off 128 balls, 10 fours, 3 sixes) and shared a third wicket stand of 145 with Dilshan Kolure (75 off 71 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) for Kurunegala SC. Ragama CC were dismissed for 179 by left-arm spinner Ruchira Silva who finished with figures of 5/37. (ST)

National essay competition on life insurance for school children

The Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL), in collaboration with the Foundation for the Advancement of Life and Insurance Around the World (FALIA), Japan, and the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka (IASL), is pleased to announce the launch of the National Essay Competition on Life Insurance for School Children – Sri Lanka 2026.

The competition is organised with the support of FALIA, Japan, an international non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting financial literacy and advancing public understanding of life insurance through education, research, and international collaboration.

The initiative ‘Inspiring Young Minds: Securing Tomorrow.’ focuses on empowering school children with essential financial knowledge by promoting awareness of life insurance, the importance of preparing for future financial needs, and the value of making informed financial decisions.

The competition has been designed to encourage school children to think critically about family financial protection, long-term financial planning, risk management, and economic stability while strengthening their writing, analytical, and communication skills.

The competition is open to school children from government, private, and international schools across Sri Lanka and will be conducted in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

Age Categories and Eligibility

The essay competition will be conducted under two age categories,

Junior Category (13-16 years): Children should have been born between 1st January 2010 and 31st December 2013.

Senior Category (17-19 years): Children should have been born between 1st January 2007 and 31st December 2009.

Registration is open until 30 September 2026. Before registering, applicants are advised to carefully read the registration instructions, have their school information and parent or guardian contact details ready, select their preferred examination district, and provide a valid email address and mobile number.

The essay competition will be conducted as a supervised examination in the month of October 2026 at designated examination centres across all 25 districts of Sri Lanka. Participants will be required to answer one essay question selected from four questions provided on the day of the examination. The maximum examination duration will be 01 hour and 30 minutes.

Participation is completely free of charge, ensuring children from all parts of the country have an equal opportunity to participate.

School children are encouraged to prepare for the competition by developing an understanding of key concepts related to life insurance as a tool of financial planning, providing family financial protection, ensuring financial security, replacing lost income, supporting long-term savings, planning for future needs, managing financial risks, contributing to economic stability, enhancing household well-being, and helping individuals achieve their life goals. On the examination date, participants will be required to write an essay based on a specific question designed around these concepts.

The competition offers attractive cash prizes for National Award Winners both Junior and Senior categories: First Place: Rs. 75,000; Second Place: Rs. 50,000 and Third Place: Rs. 25,000.

In addition, 144 District Merit Award winners will be selected across all 25 districts under both categories, with each recipient receiving a cash prize of Rs. 5,000.

National winners and District Merit Award recipients will receive printed certificates, while every participant will be awarded an official e-certificate in recognition of their participation.

Parents, teachers, and school principals are warmly invited to support this national initiative by encouraging eligible school children to participate and prepare for the competition.
