Commuters and motorists travelling on the Tarkwa-Bogoso road last Friday became very angry as they were left stranded for hours.

This was as a result of a severe congestion caused by the construction of a rumble strip on a portion of the road.

According to the motorists, prior notice was not given before the construction of the rumble strip on the busy road.

There was also no road signs indicating the project on the road.

The situation brought vehicular movement on the busy highway to a near standstill, as those constructing the rumble strip used their truck to block the road.

The traffic mostly affected motorists moving from Bogoso towards Samahu and those from Samahu area to Damang.

Most of the motorists could not fathom why such initiative was not done during the weekend or in the evening when the traffic was not intense.

‘But right now people have to be at work and others are going to other destinations using this busy road,’ some of the motorists lamented.

A police man who was also stuck in the traffic wondered why the police were not informed so they could help control the traffic.

Meanwhile, when journalists spoke with those constructing the strip, numbering about five, they claimed that they were from Accra, where the contract was given to them.

‘And we have to do it quick because we are being charged GHS1,000 a night at the hotel room we are lodging,’ they disclosed.

Strangely, there was no officer from the Ghana Highway Authority to explain the situation.

Afarinick Company Limited (ACL) has distributed over 400,000 improved cocoa seedlings free of charge to farmers across the Volta Region.

The large-scale seedling distribution is aimed at accelerating cocoa cultivation, improving farmer livelihoods and positioning the region as the country’s next cocoa production frontier.

The free distribution of seedlings also formed part of Afarinick’s broader commitment to supporting farmers with access to high-quality planting materials while driving sustainable cocoa expansion across suitable growing areas in the Volta Region and beyond.

The exercise held at Afarinick’s flagship cocoa project in Kpando, where the company has established a 2,000-acre sustainable commercial cocoa plantation, brought together hundreds of cocoa farmers, traditional authorities, political leaders, agricultural stakeholders and representatives from the cocoa industry.

Speaking at the event, Member of Parliament (MP) for Kpando, Sebastian Fred Deh, described the intervention as transformative, noting that the distribution of seedlings and the establishment of large-scale cocoa infrastructure would empower farmers and contribute significantly to the Volta Region’s economic development.

MP for Hohoe Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo and Biakoye MP, Jean-Marie Formadi also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting cocoa expansion efforts within their constituencies, stressing the potential of cocoa farming to job creation, income generation and rural development.

The 400,000 seedlings distributed were produced from improved cocoa varieties designed to deliver higher yields, better disease tolerance and greater resilience to changing climatic conditions.

Programmes Manager of Afarinick Company Limited, Davida Pappoe, explained that the free distribution of improved cocoa seedlings forms part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

She noted that through investments in seedling production and the provision of quality planting materials to farmers, Afarinick aims to support cocoa expansion efforts, enhance farm productivity and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural households, particularly in emerging cocoa-growing areas such as the Volta Region.

She noted that the seedlings were raised in Afarinick’s state-of-the-art cocoa nursery in Kpando, which has the capacity to produce more than two million improved cocoa seedlings annually.

Afarinick also acknowledged the invaluable support of the Seed Production Division (SPD) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), which supplied the improved cocoa pods used in producing the seedlings distributed to farmers.

For many farmers, the free seedlings represented a valuable opportunity to establish or expand cocoa farms without the burden of acquiring planting materials.

The Chief Executive Officer of Strategic Communications Africa Ltd (Stratcomm Africa), Esther A.N. Cobbah, has been honoured by the Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA) for her outstanding contribution to leadership development and the advancement of women in leadership.

The recognition was presented at the 5th GEA Annual Leadership Conference held in Accra. Ms. Cobbah was celebrated for her exceptional dedication and service as Facilitator of the GEA NHO Female Future Programme, a leadership initiative that equips women with the principles, skills, including confidence, and organisational savyness required to excel in leadership positions.

Since 2019 and over the course of ten cohorts, Ms. Cobbah has played a significant role in shaping the leadership journeys of close to 500 female professionals, thus, helping to strengthen female representation in decision-making spaces across Ghana and other countries in Africa. She has systematically taken them through leadership and Rhetoric modules.

Through her facilitation, mentorship and practical leadership insights, she has contributed to building a pipeline of confident and capable women leaders who continue to make meaningful contributions within their organisations and society in general.

Receiving the recognition. Ms Cobbah said she dedicates the award to Ms. Yvonne Asare Yeboah, who has been the pillar of the Female Future Programme in Ghana since its inception.

As Founder of Stratcomm Africa Ms. Cobbah has led the growth of this company into the country’s premier strategic communications consultancy and an agency respected on the continent and indeed globally. Ms. Cobbah is currently the President of the International Public Relations Association and also President of the Institute of Public Relations (IPR) Ghana.

The honour from the Ghana Employers’ Association reflects not only Ms. Cobbah’s personal commitment to developing others, but also the values that underpin Stratcomm Africa’s work. DOCTORS AT Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi have suspended their strike action, effective 6 p.m. yesterday, following the timely intervention of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and other relevant stakeholders.

In a press statement, the doctors said, ‘The Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) wishes to inform the general public that the industrial action embarked upon by its members has been suspended with effect from today, June 9, 2026 at 6 p.m.

‘This decision has been made following fruitful engagements and the timely intervention of His Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Hospital Board, management and other key stakeholders who have demonstrated commitment towards addressing the concerns that led to the industrial action.’

According to the statement, authored and signed by Dr. Michael Leat, Chairman of KADA, the doctors also considered that a prolonged industrial action would have adverse effects on innocent patients, hence halting it to return to work.

‘While KADA remains committed to ensuring that the issues that occasioned the strike are fully resolved, we have carefully considered the potential impact of a prolonged action on patient care and public health.

‘The safety and well-being of patients and the broader public interest remain central to our responsibilities, and these have informed our decision to suspend the action and continue to dialogue,’ the KADA Chairman stated.

He expressed his group’s gratitude to the Asantehene, KATH Board and all other stakeholders who played key roles in creating a pathway for dialogue in helping to find amicable resolution to their outstanding issues.

‘We are particularly grateful to the National Executive Council (NEC) and membership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) for its unwavering support and intervention in this important matter,’ he said, adding that they are also grateful to KATH nurses, pharmacists and other bodies who supported their cause.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has warned football stakeholders, supporters and the general public about the activities of a company operating under the name Match Experience Hospitality in relation to the FIFA World Cup 2026.

According to the GFA, FIFA has raised concerns that the said company, ‘Match Experience Hospitality (MEH) located at F43/6 Labone Crescent, Accra’ has been engaging in the promotion, advertisement, and sale of purported World Cup ticketing, hospitality, and travel packages without any official authorisation, accreditation, or endorsement from FIFA or its designated commercial partners.

FIFA’s legal representatives further clarify that the company is not an authorised ticketing or hospitality partner of FIFA and has not been granted any rights connected to the tournament’s commercial, marketing, or intellectual property framework.

The public is therefore strongly advised that any engagement or financial transaction with the said entity or related platforms is done strictly at their own risk.

The communication outlines that the activities in question may constitute ambush marketing and could potentially mislead the public, sponsors, and other stakeholders, thereby undermining the integrity of FIFA’s commercial structures.

As part of ongoing measures, FIFA has initiated steps including a petition to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for investigation into the matter, alongside public disclaimers to caution supporters.

The GFA reiterates its commitment to protecting the integrity of football operations in Ghana and ensuring that supporters are not exposed to fraudulent or unauthorised commercial activities connected to FIFA competitions.

The Association will continue to collaborate with FIFA and relevant authorities to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to address the issue and safeguard the interests of the Ghanaian football community.

Two citizens have petitioned President John Mahama to investigate government officials who are alleged to have paid money to receive awards at the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards held in Accra on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

The petition, dated June 8, 2026, and signed by Kwaku D. A. Takyi, popularly known as Sir Obama Pokuase, and Kamaldeen Ibrahim, also known as Amasaman Broni, which was addressed to the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, called for an independent probe into what the petitioners describe as a potential ‘Cash-for-Awards’ scandal.

In the petition, the two expressed concern over reports circulating in the media suggesting that the awardees purportedly paid substantial sums of money to receive the awards, in order to gain public recognition in their respective ministries and agencies.

‘We respectfully write to petition your high office to initiate an immediate investigation into allegations that certain government appointees paid sums ranging between GHS25,000 and GHS50,000 to secure recognition in an awards scheme dubbed the ‘6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards’,’ it stated.

The letter also listed several government officials who were recognised at the awards ceremony, including Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson; Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah; and Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo.

The rest are Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey; Deputy Transport Minister, Dorcas Affo-Toffey; Chief Executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey; Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Prof. Ransford Yaw Gyampo; and Executive Director of the National Service Authority, Ruth Seddoh.

According to the petitioners, the allegations gained prominence following comments by the Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, who claimed organisers of the event demanded between GHS25,000 to GHS50,000 per recipient of the award.

This, the letter noted, informed Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte’s decision not to participate in the event, which has since Monday received public backlash as a number of people continue to ask questions about its credibility.

The petitioners argued that if the allegations are substantiated, they could damage public confidence in government institutions and undermine standards of integrity in public service.

‘Public office holders are entrusted with the responsibility of serving the people with honesty, transparency and accountability, and as such, any conduct that creates the perception of purchasing honours or public recognition is inconsistent with these principles,’ parts of the letter stated.

The petitioners therefore asked the government to institute an independent investigation into the allegations and direct all affected appointees to cooperate fully with any inquiry.

‘We respectfully request that your office publish the findings of the investigation to ensure transparency and public confidence, impose an appropriate administrative or disciplinary sanctions on any appointee found culpable, and establish clear ethical guidelines to prevent similar occurrences in the future,’ it stated.

The petitioners further urged President Mahama to respond to the allegations to reinforce public trust, while also affirming his commitment to accountability and good governance.

‘We trust that your office will treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and take the necessary steps in the public interest,’ it added.

Meanwhile, President Mahama on Monday, June 8, directed all Ministers of State and Chief Executive Officers of state institutions, among others to refrain from participating in or accepting awards from private organisations without prior authorisation from the Office of the President.

HealthTech Ghana in partnership with the Ministry of Defence has announced the establishment of the Philips BlueSeal MRI, the country’s first 1.5T helium-free magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, supported by a comprehensive diagnostics infrastructure.

The facility also includes computed tomography (CT) scanning and a full range of laboratory and clinical diagnostic services.

To mark the official opening, MRI scans are available free of charge to eligible patients for two weeks by appointment only, effective June 8 to 20, 2026.

The scan itself is provided at no cost, but a minimal fee applies for the MRI Images Reporting, which is a formal interpretation of results by a Radiology Consultant or a Specialist, ensuring every scan receives the full clinical attention it requires.

This public-private partnership model is designed to address the structural historical vulnerabilities such as equipment breakdowns, lack of maintenance and replacement pathways for such expensive advanced equipment at public hospitals; combining private sector investment with the institutional infrastructure of 37 Military Hospital creates a self-sustaining arrangement that does not depend on recurrent procurement cycles to remain operational.

The diagnostic offering extends beyond MRI to provide a breadth of clinical assessment under one roof. 24 Hours by 7 days a week CT scanning, Digital X-ray, Mammography and Ultrasound services are available for patients requiring cross-sectional imaging of the brain, chest, abdomen and musculoskeletal structures, addressing conditions that range from stroke assessment and trauma evaluation to cancer staging.

Laboratory diagnostics covering haematology, biochemistry and pathology completes an integrated clinical environment designed to reduce the number of occasions on which a patient must attend multiple facilities before a diagnosis can be confirmed.

A total of 38 persons with hernia in Tarkwa and its surrounding communities have undergone successful surgery under a free surgical outreach programme.

They were part of 58 different cases that underwent surgeries under the programme.

The outreach programme was implemented through a partnership between the Society of Family Physicians of Ghana (SOFPOG), the Ghana Health Service (GHS), and the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF).

It was to help improve access to specialised surgical care for underserved and vulnerable communities within Tarkwa and its adjoining areas.

An initial surgical screening was conducted from April 20 to 24, 2026, while the surgical procedures were carried out from May 13 to 15, 2026 at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital.

The Project Coordinator of Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, Ayishetu Mohammed, disclosed this.

She noted that the initiative forms part of GFGF’s and SOFPOG’s commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery, promoting equitable access to quality healthcare services, and supporting community health interventions.

‘The outreach also aligns with broader efforts to improve healthcare outcomes through strategic partnerships and preventive healthcare interventions,’ she added.

Ms. Mohammed revealed that 254 clients were screened, with 71 booked for surgery, while 58 successful surgeries were performed.

She mentioned that hernia cases were 38, representing 65.5 per cent; lipoma cases – 8, representing 13.8 per cent and hydrocele – 6 cases, representing 10.3 per cent.

The rest included knee osteoarthritis – 4 cases, representing 6.9 per cent and fibroadenoma – 2 cases, representing 3.5 per cent.

She added that the outreach programme focused on the screening and surgical treatment of conditions including hernia, hydrocele, lipoma, fibroadenoma, osteoarthritis related conditions, cysts, fibroids and other surgical abnormalities.

She disclosed that Gold Fields Ghana Foundation fully sponsored the outreach by providing drugs, medical supplies, consumables and logistical support to ensure the successful implementation of the programme.

‘Let me stress that all 58 surgeries were successfully completed with no major complications recorded,’ she stated.

Ms. Mohammed indicated that the beneficiaries received post-operative care, including wound dressing, as well as prescribed medications to support recovery, with follow-up care continued at Tarkwa Municipal Hospital.

She noted that the screening exercise also helped identify serious medical conditions among beneficiaries, many of whom had delayed medical attention due to financial constraints.

A 39 YEAR old male teacher of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School (SHS) in the Ashanti Region, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting an 18 year-old female student of the school.

Suspect, Eric Buernortey Apaflo, who is a caretaker of the school’s hostel, reportedly, assaulted the student, who has been identified as Patience Chibu following a misunderstanding, leading to his arrest by the police.

According to the police, the victim and some male students misconducted themselves in the hostel so the teacher confronted them, and it unfortunately led to a scuffle between the teacher and the female student.

‘The suspect was arrested by a Nyinahini District Police Patrol Team on 8th June 2026 at about 7:00 p.m. following reports of an assault on an 18-year-old female student, Patience Chibu,’ a press statement, signed by Staff Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Augustine Antwi, said.

The teacher’s alleged assault on the student, the police noted, angered some students, who reportedly ‘pelted stones at the suspect and invited some youth from the town to the hostel in an attempt to attack him.’

According to the statement, it took the timely intervention of the police patrol team before the situation was brought under control, adding that the victim had since sought medical treatment as the suspect had been caged.

‘A Police Medical Report Form has been issued to the victim for medical examination and treatment, while the suspect remains in police custody assisting with investigations’, the report said, and urged the public to use lawful and peaceful means to resolve grievances and disputes.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Daniel Fenyi, confirmed the arrest in a Facebook post yesterday.

According to him, the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate has commenced investigations into the matter and is expected to submit a comprehensive report to the GES headquarters.

‘The Nyinahin Catholic SHS teacher seen in the viral video fighting a female student has been arrested. The Regional Education Directorate is investigating the matter. A full report will be submitted to headquarters,’ he stated.
