Radio presenter, Nana Romeo, has cautioned the National Film Authority (NFA) to be careful with the government’s newly announced GHS20 million Film Development Fund for the movie industry.

Speaking on United Showbiz on Saturday, Nana Romeo praised President John Mahama for supporting the creative arts sector, saying no previous president had made such a major move for the industry.

According to him, the fund is what the movie industry has been waiting for over the years, given constant complaints of neglect.

Despite welcoming the initiative, Nana Romeo warned that the fund could become a problem if it is not managed properly.

He explained that many people would closely monitor how the money is used and expect positive results from it.

‘If the money is not utilised properly, people will say it has been wasted and they will ask for accountability,’ he said.

Nana Romeo further described the fund as ‘a trap,’ stressing that it should not be seen as free money but something that must be used wisely.

He also advised NFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kafui Danku, and her Deputy, James Gardiner, to be very careful about the filmmakers who receive financial support.

According to him, giving the money to irresponsible filmmakers could create serious problems for the authority in the future.

He added that the government is serious about recovering wasted public funds, and the NFA must ensure proper supervision and accountability in managing the fund.

The President of the Federation of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE), Davies Narh Korboe, has emphasised that Ghana possesses all the essentials to achieve food self-sufficiency and compete globally in agriculture.

Speaking ahead of the third edition of the Ghana Horticulture Expo 2026, scheduled for June 11-13, 2026, Korboe highlighted the nation’s unique advantages: its fertile lands, favourable climate and hardworking people as the foundation for building resilience in food security.

‘Ghana possesses the land, the people, the climate, and the potential to feed itself and compete globally. Agricultural self-reliance is not merely an economic ambition; it is a national responsibility. Through innovation, partnerships, and strategic investments, we can build a Ghana that grows what it consumes and exports what the world demands,’ he stated.

His remarks capture the essence of the Expo: a call for collective action, national pride and strategic investment in Ghana’s agricultural future.

From Thursday, June 11 to Saturday, June 13, 2026, the Forecourt of the State House in Accra will host the 3rd Ghana Horticulture Expo, a premier gathering aimed at redefining the future of agriculture and agribusiness in Ghana.

Legal team for former Director-General of National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, continued their cross-examination of the prosecution’s third witness in the alleged GHS49.1 million theft case, focusing attention on some bank transfers dating as far back as 2018.

Lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, in his cross-examination of the witness, Mildred Donkor, focused on the transfer of funds from Advantage Solutions into Adu-Boahene’s personal bank account, which eventually ended in the account of the Director of Bureau of National Communications (BNC).

The transfers totaling GHS2,050,000 were made in July 2018 and December 2018, and captured in the bank statement of Advantage Solutions, a company owned by Adu-Boahene and his wife, with the witness serving as its Director.

The witness, reading from the company’s bank statement, confirmed that there was an outward transfer of GHS1.7 million in favour of Mr. Adu-Boahene in July and another GHS402,000 on December 3, 2018.

‘On the same day (July 9, 2018) as shown on page 82, there was an outward transfer in the sum of GHS1,650,000 to the Fidelity Bank in favour of the Director, Bureau of National Communications, is that not so?’ Mr. Atta Akyea asked.

‘Yes, my Lord. I can see the GHS1,650,000 per the document given me,’ the witness answered.

‘And at page 107, the sum of GHS400,000 was transferred out to the Fidelity Bank in favour of the Director, Bureau of National Communications, is that not so,’ the lawyer further asked.

‘I see the GHS400,000 transfer out per the document given me,’ the witness answered.

Mr. Atta Akyea then indicated to the witness that evidently, the transfer of GHS1,650,000 and GHS400,000 in favour of Director, BNC at the Fidelity Bank on July 9 and December 4, 2018 were made possible by the originating outward transfers from Advantage Solutions accounts as borne out by the bank statement she read.

Madam Donkor, in response, said as she had earlier told the court, she was working under instruction from Adu-Boahene for transactions to be effected, and the document she was reading from is her boss’ statement that was generated by the bank, ‘so, if instruction was given to me to do it, then it was carried out.’

‘From your testimony this morning, you were duly notified about the transfers to the Director, BNC account at the Fidelity Bank from Advantage Solutions Limited through A1’s (Adu-Boahene’s) account,’ the lawyer asked.

‘Counsel said it is my testimony but I was given documents to read after which he said I have confirmed,’ the witness answered.

Account Closure

Mr. Atta Akyea then suggested to the witness that the BNC Communications Bureau Limited (one of Adu-Boahene’s companies) account with UMB was closed in 2023 based on instructions she (witness) sent to the bank via an email dated March 2, 2023.

Madam Donkor said she was working under instructions from Adu-Boahene and his wife so, if an email was sent as the lawyer indicated, then it was an instruction from one of the couple, but she could not remember the exact date.

She was then shown the said email and she said ‘it is an email indicating being sent from me and I still go back to my word that I do such things not on my own authority but from the instructions of A1 and A2.’

Mr. Atta Akyea then sought to tender the email in evidence, but Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, objected to the tendering on ground of relevance.

The defence lawyer, in response, said the document is an email closing the account which received the sum of GHS49.1 million at the heart of this ‘criminal adjudication.’

He said it is emanating out clearly that the lifespan of the account was beyond 2020 and the court cannot close its eyes to see the matters post-dating 2020, which can ‘clearly explain and disprove the pathetic theory of the prosecution that the account was opened in 2020 for a criminal purpose.’

Justice Francis Achibonga overruled the objection and admitted the email. The case was adjourned to May 26 for further cross-examination of the witness.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have rescued 17 passengers, while three others are feared dead, in a fatal road accident last Friday at Woadze near Kpeve, along the Kpeve-Asikuma road in the Volta Region.

According to the GNFS, the Peki Fire Station received a distress call at approximately 9:58 a.m. and immediately dispatched a rescue team to the scene to assist victims trapped in a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle with registration number GR 8231 C.

The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Abotuase in the Volta Region to Ningo in the Greater Accra Region when the crash occurred.

The commercial vehicle was carrying about 20 passengers which includes 11 males, five females, and four children at the time of the accident, with the rescue team successfully extricating 17 victims, including 13 adults and four children, from the vehicle.

However, three adults, two men and a woman, lost their lives in the crash.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service at the Kpando Divisional Command joined emergency responders at the scene to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.

Also, Officials from the Ghana Ambulance Service at Afadjato and Juapong provided emergency medical support and transported the injured victims and the deceased to the Kpando Government Hospital and Peki Government Hospital.

The injured passengers are currently receiving treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue pending further investigations.

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has called for peace and reconciliation in the face of current challenges of multiple dimensions.

He said this in his Eid-ul-Adha message to Muslims, which falls tomorrow. The occasion, he said, offers Muslims an opportunity to reaffirm their faith in Allah.

God, he quotes from the Holy Quran, said in Chapter 22 vs 37 that ‘he is not interested in the flesh and blood of the animal sacrifice on the day of the Eid but in our commitment to piety,’ emphasising that the occasion is not only for celebration but reflection.

The Chief Imam said the virtues of the Eid will be fruitless unless they have the capacity to guarantee attitudinal change and cleansing, as well as moral ascendancy in our society.

This, according to him, calls for attitudinal change from negativity to positivity in the supreme interest of society.

Eid-ul-Adha, he said, is the moral backbone of interfaith harmony among members of the Abrahamic fraternity.

He referred to the Divine order of God to Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as the genesis of the Eid-ul-Adha, adding that this is the point of convergence among members of the Abrahamic faith.

To members of the Abrahamic faith, he called on them to regard the Eid-ul-Adha as another opportunity to reaffirm commitment to interfaith harmony, a bedrock of national unity and stability.

Continuing, he said that in darkness of socio-religious adversities, interfaith harmony serves as light that has brightened the path to prosperity.

On the global stage, he pointed with dismay the myriad of threats, which he added ranged from genocidal impunity to moral decadence.

He called for an end to the atrocities arising from the war in Iran and other areas of conflict.

‘We cannot surrender our God-given humanity to modern-day barbarism in the name of supremacy,’ he cautioned.

Parliament has launched a Mini Parliament initiative aimed at empowering children to participate in national discourse and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.

The programme, which was organised by the Parliament in collaboration with the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), UNICEF and the Learning Tree Foundation, seeks to provide children with a practical platform to debate national issues and understand parliamentary procedures.

Speaking at the launch in Parliament House, the Chairperson of Parliament’s Committee on Gender, Children and Social Protection and Member of Parliament for Krachi West, Helen Adjoa Ntoso, stressed the need for stronger engagement mechanisms to help young people realise their potential.

She noted that the era when governments solely designed and implemented policies for underrepresented groups without citizen participation was over, adding that young people increasingly demand opportunities to be heard in decision-making processes.

According to her, the shift reflects Ghana’s commitment to transparency, openness and public trust.

The Chief Social Policy and Inclusion Officer at UNICEF, Ms. Paulina Sarvilahati, underscored the importance of child participation in national development.

She reminded participants that Ghana was the first country to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which guarantees children the right to freely express their views on matters affecting them.

‘You deserve to be heard. You deserve to be protected. You deserve to go to school and achieve your dreams,’ she told the children, while encouraging them to speak confidently and boldly.

The Coordinating Director of Public Affairs at Parliament, Kate Addo, commended the children for their confidence, eloquence and active participation during the maiden sitting.

She urged them to remain disciplined, committed to academic excellence and actively interested in national affairs, noting that leadership begins with integrity, responsibility and service.

Speaking on the rationale behind the initiative, the Director of Public Engagement at Parliament, Supt. (Rtd) Effia Tenge, disclosed that more than 44,000 people visited Parliament under its educational programme between 2023 and 2025, with over 70 percent being primary and junior high school pupils.

She explained that although many children showed interest in understanding parliamentary work, they often struggled to fully grasp parliamentary procedures during visits.

According to her, the Mini Parliament initiative was therefore designed as an interactive learning platform where children could assume the roles of Members of Parliament and debate issues affecting young people.

‘The vision is to ensure that the Ghanaian of tomorrow is capable of making meaningful contributions to national progress,’ she stated.

The Executive Director of ACEPA, Dr. Rasheed Draman, praised Parliament for introducing an innovative initiative that promotes civic responsibility and inclusion among children.

During the maiden sitting, participants debated the topic, ‘Responsible Use of Technology by Children,’ focusing on online safety, digital responsibility and the impact of technology on children’s wellbeing.

Officials from the Cyber Security Authority also educated participants on cyberbullying, internet safety and the protection of personal information online.

The Queen Mother of the Dzorwulu Abelemkpe Subdivision Stool, Manye Naa Badu Diaba I, also encouraged the children to uphold good moral values and work towards becoming responsible future leaders.

Some persons would out of shallow-mindedness and sheer partisan political mischief ridicule the visions of visionaries, doing so with such recklessness and passion to make their useless points.

The world has reached where it has today because of the visions of persons who originated game-changing concepts and templates; these have transformed humanity greatly, incomparable to any period in the history of man.

The impact of space engineering and the eventual venture to the orbit and the way these have impacted telecommunications are enormous. These, at the time they were being conceptualised, could not be comprehended by those who regarded them as sheer waste of rare resources and even derided them. Not so those who thought far and found in such technological ventures, game-changers for the future. They have been vindicated by the ease with which mankind communicates today as the Morse system is confined to the bosom of history.

Mobile phones and the attendant digitisation leverages are the actualisation of the dreams of visionaries, not dunderheads.

At the time the then Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia told his compatriots that he would prefer a Ghana Card to 1,000 interchanges, he was subjected to assortment of invectives. That was beyond the ken of nitwits.

The world, he said during one of his lectures which gave the National Democratic Congress (NDC) nightmares, was moving into a digital space and Ghana would have to position herself in that space if she wants to be relevant in the fast moving international environment.

Sam George labelled him a liar, especially when the former Vice President mentioned the possibility of the card serving as a travel document for those who lost their passports while outside the country.

Dr. Bawumia said the Ghana Card as recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) will be readable in over a hundred countries and readable and acceptable in 44,000 airports worldwide.

That sounded Greek to such shallow-minded persons who parade themselves on the corridors of politics and pretending to be masters of all subjects. They could not believe the realities of the presentation of the former Vice President as regards the Ghana Card, three years ago.

He was ahead of them in vision by three years, hence their inability to comprehend the presentation on the Ghana Card. Of course being on a different wavelength far advanced than them, they could not have been carried along in such critical thinking, an attribute of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

They could not understand how digitisation would impact the economy. Today, the impact is there for all to see.

The former Vice President, the driving force behind the Ghana Card project, has been vindicated as the document proves its mettle on various fronts.

They even said that the former Vice President has left his domain of economics for the digital world. What a bunch who are so obsessed with partisan politics that their vision, if they are endowed with any at all, is blurred.

The Ghana Card is today a prerequisite for banking and insurance businesses, a verifiable testimony to Dr. Bawumia’s vision.

President John Mahama, who once said the Gas do not have need for digitisation, has today described the Ghana Card as an anchor for the road tolls.

On May 1, 2025, President Mahama gave what can pass for his most flowery accolade for the Ghana Card when he said it is the most modern in Africa. He should have proceeded to pay tribute to Dr. Bawumia for championing the project rollout.

Yayra Koku, the Executive Secretary of National Identification Authority, is in a better position to vindicate the former Vice President beyond his acceptance that today, the Ghana Card is readable in 44,000 airports.

Injured forward Lamine Yamal has been named in Spain’s World Cup squad, which does not feature any Real Madrid players for the first time.

The 18-year-old missed the final month of the season after tearing his left hamstring while playing for Barcelona on 22 April.

Real defenders Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal were left out.

‘I don’t look at one club or another. I don’t have that local bias a fan might have. For me, it’s more global,’ said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.

Midfielder Mikel Merino, who returned in Arsenal’s last Premier League game of the season on Sunday after four months out with a stress fracture in the foot, has been included in the squad.

A major police crackdown on suspected criminal networks operating along the Ghana-Burkina Faso border has led to the arrest of 74 persons in the Upper East Region following two intelligence-led operations carried out over a three-day period.

The operations, carried out between May 20 and May 22, 2026, formed part of a broader crackdown by the Ghana Police Service on criminal networks operating within the region and along the Ghana-Burkina Faso border corridor.

According to a police statement, the first operation took place on May 20, 2026 at Paga within the Ghana-Burkina Faso border buffer zone. The exercise resulted in the arrest of 40 suspects, made up of 28 males and 12 females.

The suspects include 23 Ghanaians, eight Nigerians, six Burkinabés, one Malian, and one Togolese national, which points to the cross-border nature of the suspected criminal activities.

Police said several exhibits were retrieved during the operation, including parcels and sacks of suspected narcotic substances as well as five motorbikes believed to have been used in the transportation and distribution of the substances.

A second operation was conducted on May 22, 2026 within the Navrongo Municipality, where the Special Operations Team raided identified criminal hotspots, including the Condemned Road Corridor, ‘After Six’ Spot, and ‘Lighter Inn’ Spot.

The statement said that operation led to the arrest of 34 additional suspects, comprising 32 males and two females.

Police also recovered 11 motorbikes, quantities of suspected narcotic substances, and assorted foreign cigarettes during the swoop.

The police said the suspects were arraigned before court on the same day, with proceedings presided over by Justice Ernest Pascal Gemadzie.

Sixteen of the suspects were remanded into police custody and are expected to reappear before the court on June 4, 2026. The remaining 22 suspects are currently being profiled for further action.

The police indicated that all the suspects remain in custody assisting with investigations, while efforts continue to track down other persons believed to be connected to criminal activities in the affected areas.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to intensifying intelligence-led operations across the country as part of efforts to combat organised crime, narcotics trafficking, and related offences.

General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, has admonished all persons in positions of power and authority against corruption.

Rev. Wengam gave the admonition at the dedication of the office complex of Greater Accra East Region of the church in Tema.

He said corruption has spelled disaster and ruin for many individuals, institutions, businesses, nations and governments, including the once powerful ancient Roman Empire.

These historical and contemporary examples, Rev. Wengam emphasised, should serve as a fountain of lessons from which all leaders must drink.

He further stressed the absolute need for leaders to always exemplify the virtues of integrity and honesty.

‘Let your yes be yes, and your no be no. Stand for the truth and pursue it,’ Rev. Wengam added.

The General Superintendent urged pastors in particular to make conscious efforts to redeem their tainted image.

‘Our image out there is not good. Many Ghanaians don’t trust us. So we must not only emulate the faith of our forefathers but also walk in integrity, holiness and purity,’ Rev. Wengam declared.

He said it takes sacrificial leadership and audacious faith, backed by prayer and fasting, to accomplish great things and leave enduring legacy.

‘All people, from the President to the lowest in society, must seriously endeavour to leave a legacy. This is what remains of people in leadership after they are gone,’ he said.

Rev. Wengam was full of praise for the Greater Accra East Regional Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Andrews Nelson Awintia, for leaving a remarkable legacy in the form of the region’s office complex.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, commended the leadership of the church for its growing impact on the nation at large.

She spoke on the need for the government and faith-based organisations to increase their collaboration to address social challenges.

The Greater Accra East Regional Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Awintia, said the office complex was acquired and refurbished through sacrifice and the grace of God, without imposing any financial burden on the members.

‘What remain on the priority list of the region are evangelism, missionary work and planting of more churches,’ he added.

The Founder and Executive Chairman of the First Sky Group, Eric Seddy Kutortse, promised to finance the construction of the road leading to the regional office complex.

The Tema Municipal Chief Executive, Madam Ebi Bright, described Assemblies of God as a strategic partner in the spiritual and physical development of the township.
