Ghana’s music has been left out of the BET Awards nominations, as no Ghanaian artist earned a nomination for the 2026 edition, announced on Tuesday, May 19.

Ghana’s presence at the prestigious awards scheme seems to be declining despite the growing global success of some of its local acts.

Over the years, Ghana has enjoyed moments of recognition at the BET Awards. Sarkodie made history in 2012 when he won the Best International Act: Africa award, becoming one of the first Ghanaian musicians to achieve the feat. Stonebwoy followed in 2015 with the same award, strengthening Ghana’s position on the African music scene.

Other Ghanaian artistes including R2Bees, MzVee, Kojo Antwi, Fuse ODG, D-Black, Kwesi Arthur, Black Sherif and Camidoh have also received nominations for BET over the years.

Hip Pop Star, Black Sherif has also won the Best International Flow at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards.

However, Ghana’s representation has slowed in recent times, even as the country’s music industry continues to produce globally recognised talents.

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has hosted a high powered delegation from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Nigeria, who were in Ghana for a study tour on the Creative Economy.

The delegation was led by Prof. Dabin Haruna Khitwe. In his remarks, Prof. Dabin indicated that the delegation is the Study Group Five of the Institute and part of Senior Executive Course 48, since the establishment of the Institute. He said the Institute conducts annual study tours on specific areas of the economy and governance as directed by the President.

According to him, this year, the theme chosen by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria is, ‘The Orange Economy and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development in Nigeria’ – with emphasis on how creativity meets the market in the digital era globally.

Prof. Dabin noted that the delegation has met with the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, and the agencies under the ministry, adding that similar delegations are in other parts of Africa conducting similar study tours, which will continue to other parts of the world before they finally put together a comprehensive report for President Tinubu.

The MUSIGA President, Bessa Simons, warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed excitement at hosting such a high-powered delegation from Nigeria. He also shed light on various issues in the Ghanaian music industry, including the operations of the Creative Arts Agency (CAC). The Director of Special Projects and Communications for MUSIGA, Ahuma Bosco Ocansey, briefed the delegation on the structure and operations of MUSIGA, as well as the union’s collaborations with international organisations such as the International Federation of Musicians (FIM).

Present at the meeting were Rev. Eddie Eyison, National Treasurer of MUSIGA and Samuel Kofi Agyemang, General Secretary of MUSIGA.

Members of the Nigerian delegation included Faculty Members Air Commodore Nwankwo Raymond Chibueze, PhD and Dr. Amaechi Obinna Charles. Other members and participants were Abdulkadir Moshood Olanrewaju, Capt Agbaje Zaid Idowu, Contr Aremu Adegboyea Olayinka, Engr Damo Aliyu Mamuda, Delano Oluyele Obafemi (SAN), Dr. Enabulele Osahon, Gp Capt Ganiyu Fatai Ayinla, DCP Isa Garba, Dr. Jibrin Balarabe Suleiman, Dr. Mundi Sule, Jane Chinwe Okeleke, Col Olasein Mutiu Dotun, Raji Bilkisu Omeneke and Rwang Yop Shom.

The Western Regional Police Command has declared one Sule Anas, an Arabic Teacher, wanted in connection with defilement and unnatural carnal knowledge of two minors at Fijai Zongo Central, near Sekondi, in the Western Region.

According to the Regional Police Command, the Arabic teacher was employed by leaders of Fijai Zongo Central Community to teach their children Arabic on weekends.

Police investigation further indicated that the suspect lured the victims into a store room inside the mosque with the pretext of doing spiritual cleansing for them and ended up sodomizing and defiling the minors.

A warrant for his arrest was issued on Wednesday May 20, 2026 by the Gender Court in Sekondi.

A statement issued by the Command and signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, noted that the suspect is fair in complexion and about 5.7 feet tall.

Information gathered suggested that the suspect, who is currently on the run, may be hiding in La Cote d’Ivoire or Togo.

The Command, therefore, urged anyone with credible information on the whereabouts of the suspect to contact the Western Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit, the nearest Police station or call 191 or 112 for his arrest.

Mohammed Kudus has undergone surgery following his latest injury setback, with Ghana coach, Carlos Queiroz, still hopeful the midfielder could feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Tottenham Hotspur attacker is recovering well after initially deciding against surgery despite recommendations from the club’s medical staff.

Kudus, who made his Ghana debut in 2019, has scored 13 goals in 46 appearances for the Black Stars and has established himself as one of the country’s most influential players.

The 25-year-old had been sidelined since January with a quad injury before suffering a fresh hamstring setback that appeared to end his season and place his World Cup participation in serious doubt.

Tottenham’s medical team reportedly advised surgery following specialist assessments, viewing it as the best option for long-term recovery. Kudus had initially opted for a conservative rehabilitation programme because of concerns an operation could rule him out of the World Cup.

However, the Ghana international has now undergone surgery and started rehabilitation under close medical supervision.

The latest development has provided renewed optimism for both the player and the Black Stars ahead of the tournament in North America.

Queiroz is understood to be considering naming Kudus in Ghana’s final World Cup squad, with growing belief the midfielder could return in time for the Black Stars’ final Group L match against Croatia.

There is also hope he could be available for the knockout stage should Ghana progress beyond the group phase.

If selected, it would mark Kudus’ second World Cup appearance after starring for Ghana at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has been released from the custody of the Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI) following his remand over allegations of publication of false news and offensive conduct.

This followed the grant of a GHS100,000 bail with two sureties to be justified by a High Court in Accra yesterday.

He was released after he met the bail conditions set by the court.

Abronye DC was remanded into the custody of BNI by a Circuit Court in Accra on May 13 after he was arraigned for some comments he made about a Circuit Court judge sitting at Adenta.

He was expected to return to the trial court on May 27. His lawyers, however, filed an application at the High Court seeking bail pending the trial before the lower court.

His lawyer, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, led by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, moved the motion yesterday praying the court to grant him bail pending trial.

Despite previously asking the court for an adjournment to familiarise with the processes filed, Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, did not oppose the application.

The court, presided over by Justice Halima El-Lawal Abdul-Basit, granted the application and admitted Abronye DC to a bail of GHS100,000 with two sureties to be justified.

He was ordered to surrender his travelling documents to the registry of the court.

The court said he cannot travel outside the jurisdiction without its permission.

He was further ordered to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service once every two weeks.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party says it is going to petition the Chief Justice to remove His Honour Joseph Yennuban Kunsong from the trial, claiming the judge has taken a stance in the case.

Addressing the press after the court proceeding, General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said the judge’s handling of the case amounts to a misconduct and, therefore, cannot continue to preside over the trial.

‘We are filing a petition to the Chief Justice for Justice [His Honour] Kunsong to be removed from the case because we believe that he has taken a stance in the case and he cannot be a judge in his own case,’ he indicated.

Remand

On May 13, 2026, Abronye DC was remanded into the custody of the Bureau of National Intelligence over some alleged offensive conduct and publication of false news.

Court documents allege that Abronye DC, in April 2026, without lawful authority, ‘uttered certain abusive words’ indicating that a judge sitting at the Adenta Circuit Court is ‘not a judge but rather a politician’ who has ‘covered your hair with a sack and claim you are a judge.’

He was also charged with one count of publication of false news contrary to section 208(1) of the Criminal Code, 1960 (Act 29).

According to court document, the 44-year-old, in a video circulating on social media, made the ‘political judge’ claims, a statement ‘which is likely to cause fear and panic and disturb the public peace, knowing the statement to be false.’

He pleaded not guilty to the two charges, and the court, presided over by His Honour Joseph Yennuban Kunsong, remanded him for two weeks to reappear on May 27.

His lawyers had prayed the court to grant him bail pending the trial, but this was heavily opposed by the prosecution.

The prosecution’s brief fact, presented by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye, allege that in April 2026, Abronye DC falsely published a video online in which he made derogatory remarks to wit, the Circuit Court judge is very bias and always doing political case and that her rulings are wrong and full of grammatical errors, in an attempt to incite members of the public against the court and the said judge.

The brief fact also indicate that Abronye DC mounted furious attacks on the said judge on social media following a foul comment from a pastor on the Vice President, which is under trial at the Adenta Circuit Court presided over by the judge in question.

It further noted that the particular video and others are being pulled and will be sent to the Police Forensic lab for analysis, adding that the case is under investigation.

The Minority Caucus in Parliament says it will intensify pressure on the government during the second meeting of Parliament over what it describes as delays in implementing key campaign promises, particularly the much-publicised 24-hour economy policy and measures to address unemployment and the rising cost of living.

Speaking to the media ahead of the commencement of the parliamentary meeting, the Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee and Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, said the Minority had been given ‘marching orders’ by the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to hold the government accountable on issues affecting Ghanaians.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia addressed the Minority Caucus during a meeting on Wednesday and urged members to act as ‘the vanguards of the people and the voice of the voiceless’ in Parliament.

Mr. Jinapor said the government, which has spent nearly one and a half years in office, was approaching its midterm and would now face closer scrutiny over its performance and campaign commitments.

‘The major flagship programmes the government put before the Ghanaian people, we are yet to see those programmes being implemented,’ he stated.

He identified the 24-hour economy initiative and its accompanying ‘Formula 1-3-3’ policy aimed at tackling youth unemployment as key issues the Minority would pursue vigorously during the meeting.

He also indicated that the caucus would revisit promises made to victims of the financial sector clean-up. According to him, the President had pledged during the election campaign that all affected customers would be paid within one year, a promise he said Parliament would demand answers on.

Mr. Jinapor further noted that unemployment, particularly among the youth, and the high cost of living remained the two biggest challenges confronting Ghanaians and would dominate parliamentary debates in the coming weeks.

On foreign affairs, he criticised what he described as poor engagement between the Foreign Affairs Ministry and Parliament, especially regarding major international agreements and security cooperation arrangements.

He cited the security cooperation agreement between Ghana and the European Union, arguing that Parliament had not been adequately briefed despite constitutional requirements for parliamentary ratification of such agreements under Article 75 of the Constitution.

According to him, the Minority members on the Foreign Affairs Committee would demand greater accountability and responsiveness from the Foreign Affairs Minister on matters relating to Ghana’s foreign policy.

Mr. Jinapor added that other issues expected to feature prominently during the meeting include the completion of the Agenda 111 hospital projects, healthcare delivery, education, illegal mining, and broader economic challenges facing the country.

The abandoned Asempanaye Police Station in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region has been overtaken by weeds, reptiles and other animals years after it was commissioned for use.

The police facility, according to sources, was commissioned on November 6, 2020 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo together with the then Member of Parliament for Offinso North, Augustine Collins Ntim.

However, the building has remained abandoned due to disagreements between the previous administration and the Ghana Police Service over the construction of the facility.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Offinso North, Ceasar Ofosu Acheampong, disclosed this in an interview with DAILY GUIDE.

According to him, investigations into the matter revealed that the Police Service rejected the facility because it was constructed without prior consultation with the security agency.

He explained that some critical components required for the operation of a police station were left out during construction, including an armoury, accommodation for officers and other security-related facilities.

‘DSP Joseph Gyasi-Agyemang, the then District Police Commander, told me that they rejected the project because he was not informed, as the police were supposed to conduct all the necessary security checks on the project as demanded by law,’ he stated.

Mr. Acheampong, who assumed office on May 16, 2025, said he later contacted the Ashanti Regional Estate Officer of the Ghana Police Service, who also confirmed that the facility lacked some key requirements needed before it could be operationalised.

He said the project was funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), adding that the completion and refurbishment of the facility have been captured in the district’s 2026 budget.

The DCE stressed the need for the police station to become operational to help strengthen security in the area and support police operations in Ejura and surrounding communities.

‘I want the facility to be operational so that we can liaise with the police in Ejura to beef up security and combat crimes that are rampant in the area,’ he indicated.

He pledged to ensure that the abandoned structure is given a facelift, including the provision of offices and accommodation for police personnel, to enable them effectively perform their duties.

A FEMALE TikToker, Mahama Aminat, has been arrested for allegedly threatening the life of President John Dramani Mahama on social media.

The suspect, who is nicknamed ‘Akosua Serwaa Minat’, also hurled unprintable words at the First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Mahama

In a viral video on various social media platforms, the suspect verbally attacked the first family without provocation, and allegedly incited members of the public to attack both the President and his wife, sparking public anger.

Even some of her followers on Tiktok, reportedly, condemned her weird attitude and called for the authorities concerned to reprimand her.

Serwaa Minat was picked up by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) in a joint operation with the Surveillance Unit of the National Operations Department at Sekyere Zongo in the Sekyere Kumawu District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

Her arrest was posted on the Ghana Police Service’s official Facebook page.

According to the report, the suspect, who is still in police custody, would be arraigned in the coming days after thorough interrogation by the police.

The Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to dealing decisively with persons who use social media platforms to issue threats, spread offensive content or endanger public peace and national security.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has invested over GHS3,000,000 in the first quarter of the year aimed at improving power reliability and stability in 40 communities across six districts in the Accra West Region.

The investments are part of ECG’s ongoing efforts to resolve power supply challenges and enhance customer experiences.

Speaking at a technical review meeting, the Accra West ECG General Manager, Ing. Serial Etwire, reiterated the company’s commitment to delivering quality, reliable, and safe electricity services to support the country’s economic growth and development. She noted that key factors that contribute to frequent transformer damage and overloading include illegal connections, uncleared vegetation, and vandalism.

‘When transformers become overloaded, ECG risks losing them through burnouts. Customers, on the other hand, suffer from persistent low voltage and phase-off, especially during peak hours,’ she explained.

Madam Etwire urged customers and community leaders to remain vigilant and report any unauthorised persons interfering with ECG’s network to the nearest ECG office. This, she said, will help safeguard power infrastructure and improve service delivery.

She further advised customers to prioritise safety by immediately reporting any fallen conductors, particularly during and after rainfall to ECG for attention.

She also encouraged communities to engage ECG district offices for assistance in trimming trees that grow into power lines.

Beneficiary communities where overloaded, faulty, or vandalised transformers were replaced or upgraded include Dunyo Township, Dunyo New Site, DVLA Kuntunse, Amasaman China Mall, Amasaman, Oduntia, Sarpeiman, Amasaman Market, Sarpeiman Faase, Treba Junction, Amasaman ICGC, Akwamu, Danso Adeiso, Kofi Dogbe, Sekyikrom, Dokrochiwa, Obuom, Attorkrom, and Pokrom under ECG’s Nsawam and Amasaman districts.

Other communities include Odumase Junction, Sonitra, Ablekuma Joma, Manhean, Nsakina, Gbawe Gavel Junction, Joma Market, C-Connie, Gbawe Zero, Nsakina Star Oil Filling Station, Fan Milk Methodist, Anyaa Market Down, Amomoley, Poultry Farm, Israel Park, St. Justin Anglican Church, Gbawe Telecom, Djaman, Banana Inn, Agege 205 Down, and Hansonic, all within the Company’s Bortianor, Dansoman, Ablekuma, and Achimota operational districts.

Representatives of the beneficiary communities expressed appreciation for ECG’s swift intervention and pledged their support in protecting installations from vandalism and illegal connections.

ECG is currently undertaking a large-scale installation and upgrade of transformers across its operational areas to address overloading challenges. This initiative is expected to improve power reliability and reduce frequent outages.

The Global Youth Network (GYN) has inducted its first cohort of 10 Ghanaian members, marking the start of a 20-country tour to mentor and train young leaders across every sector of society.

The ceremony, which took place on Sunday, May 17, 2026 and hosted by the World Conference of Mayors Inc. and Relevant Achievers Impacting Nations (RAIN), brought together traditional leaders, clergy, business leaders, civil society representatives, and academics.

Speaking at the event, Author Ralph Antwi, Head of the Global Youth Network, said GYN’s objective was to ‘secure tomorrow today’ by preparing the next generation of leaders to outperform their predecessors.

‘You can only be said to be successful if you produce successors who do better than you,’ Antwi said.

The Secretary General of the World Conference of Mayors Inc. and two-time Mayor of Prichard, Alabama, Jimmie Gardner, attended as Guest of Honour. Gardner also launched his book, ‘Africatown: The Story That Would Not Die’, during the ceremony.

‘Welcome to the global family of changemakers,’ Gardner told the inductees. ‘Unite around the vision of securing tomorrow today and lead with purpose.’

The inducted members were selected for demonstrated leadership and project experience in youth empowerment, philanthropy, mentorship, and community development. In their oath, they pledged to commit diligently to the vision and give their best to ensure its fulfillment.

The 20-country tour is set to begin in June 2026. It will deliver leadership training and cross-sector project incubation in cities across Europe, North America, and Africa. Confirmed stops include France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, the United States, Canada, Nigeria, and South Africa.
