The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has warned that State officials involved in the abuse of power and intimidation of opposition members would eventually be held accountable.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration has, since assuming office on January 7, 2025, engaged in persistent harassment, arrests and intimidation of officers, activists and supporters of the NPP.

‘I, therefore, serve notice to officers of the State who are active participants in this unholy enterprise that the day of accountability will come and the abuse of State power will be accounted for,’ he declared in a statement issued in Accra yesterday.

The former Vice President accused the government of undermining democratic principles and free speech through what he described as politically motivated arrests, detentions and excessive bail conditions imposed on perceived opponents of the government.

He cited the arrest and detention of David Essandoh, the Agona West NPP Organiser, over comments on the return of intermittent power outages aka dumsor on social media, as well as the detention of the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, popularly known as Abronye DC.

Dr. Bawumia said the actions were setting Ghana’s democracy backwards and weakening constitutional freedoms.

‘These actions undermine free speech and are setting Ghana’s democracy backwards,’ he stated.

He further alleged that there was an ‘unholy collaboration’ between the Executive, State investigative agencies and some members of the judiciary to intimidate and silence members of the opposition party.

‘I condemn in the strongest of terms, the unholy collaboration between the Executive, State investigative agencies, and some elements within the judiciary to use intimidation and harassment to silence members of the New Patriotic Party,’ he said.

Dr. Bawumia also urged NPP supporters across the country not to give in to fear or intimidation but to continue demanding accountability from the government.

‘To Patriots around the country, I urge you all to stay firm by refusing to succumb to intimidation while continuing your civic duty to hold the Government accountable to its promises,’ he stated.

He maintained that the NPP would continue defending the nation’s democratic gains and resist attempts to suppress political opposition.

‘We fought hard for this democracy and as a party, we cannot surrender it to intimidation from those who possess temporary power today,’ he added.

Managing Director of the State Housing Company (SHC), John Sheriff Bawah, has called for private sector support to boost housing delivery across the country and help the government tackle Ghana’s estimated housing deficit of 1.8 million units.

Mr. Bawah, who made the call during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Green City Project at Dedesua in the Ashanti Region, said such collaboration with the private sector would reduce construction costs and make home ownership more affordable for Ghanaians.

He stated that decent and affordable housing remains critical to building a thriving and productive economy and, therefore, reaffirmed government’s commitment to complete all inherited projects.

He revealed that about 300 housing units in Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi are scheduled for completion before the end of the year, adding that the company has initiated urban redevelopment projects in the Kaneshie and Adenta Estates, with similar projects expected to commence soon at Effiakuma in Takoradi and Kanda in Accra.

The redevelopment projects, he said, form part of government’s broader vision of repurposing ageing government estates to increase housing stock in rapidly growing urban centres.

He said, ‘Under the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, SHC is also participating in the Greenville District Housing Project, where 40 housing units with supporting infrastructure are being constructed in the Tamale South Constituency of the Northern Region.’

Mr. Bawah added that preparations are also underway to complete government affordable housing projects in Koforidua, with similar interventions expected later in Wa and Tamale.

He said SHC is also working on seven regional office buildings for the Ghana Immigration Service in Tamale, Damongo, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Tema, Sunyani and Kumasi, while also constructing residential apartment buildings for the service in Tamale and Takoradi.

Speaking on the Green City Project, Mr. Bawah described it as a transformative housing development designed to complement the lush environment of the Ashanti Region. The 200-acre project will feature 2, 3 and 4-bedroom detached homes, semi-detached houses, apartments, recreational facilities, commercial spaces and event grounds.

A total of 1,067 residential units are expected to be delivered within five years, with Phase One comprising 214 two and three-bedroom detached homes scheduled for completion by the fourth quarter of 2027.

He further expressed appreciation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the chiefs and people of Dedesua and Asanteman for welcoming the project, while assuring residents that SHC would engage the community throughout the development process.

Mr. Bawah also commended the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources for its guidance and support towards ensuring state-owned enterprises deliver greater value to the people of Ghana.

The Nigerian movie industry has once again been thrown into mourning following the shocking death of Nollywood actor, Alexx Ekubo, at the age of 40.

News of his death surfaced on Tuesday, leaving fans, friends and colleagues shocked and saddened.

Reports say the actor died after battling cancer privately.

Several Nollywood stars have taken to social media to mourn the actor and share tributes in his honour.

Alexx Ekubo was known for his roles in many hit movies and comedy dramas. He became famous after finishing as first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition and later built a successful acting career in Nollywood.

Fans have described him as talented, friendly and full of life, while colleagues say his death is a huge loss to the entertainment industry.

The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), led by its Administrator, Mr. Paul Adjei, on Friday, May 8, 2026, paid a working visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to officially brief him on the award of a GHS400 million contract for the procurement of state-of-the-art medical equipment for the new teaching hospital at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The aim of the visit was to officially report to the Asantehene on the successful award of the contract and update him on efforts being undertaken by GETFund and government towards the realisation of the landmark healthcare project.

The project forms part of the broader agenda of President John Dramani Mahama to strengthen tertiary healthcare infrastructure and elevate Ghanaian universities into premier institutions of excellence.

During the engagement, Mr. Paul Adjei briefed the Asantehene on the post-contract processes and implementation roadmap for the project.

The new teaching hospital is expected to be equipped with modern medical technologies to support clinical training, medical research, and specialised healthcare services.

The Asantehene expressed his appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to advancing healthcare and tertiary education infrastructure in Ghana. He also commended the GETFund Administrator, Mr. Paul Adjei, for his dedication and commitment in helping to actualise his vision for the establishment of the KNUST Teaching Hospital.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II acknowledged the efforts of GETFund in supporting the university and advancing healthcare infrastructure development in the Ashanti Region.

He noted that the establishment and equipping of the teaching hospital would significantly improve healthcare delivery for the people of the Ashanti Region while also contributing to the expansion and enhancement of healthcare services nationwide.

The Asantehene further emphasised the importance of investing in modern healthcare infrastructure and medical education to support national development as well as improve healthcare outcomes across the country.

Mr. Adjei reaffirmed GETFund’s commitment to supporting strategic national institutions through targeted investments in education and healthcare infrastructure.

He assured the Asantehene that the Fund remains committed to ensuring the successful implementation of the project in line with government’s vision and the development aspirations of KNUST.

The new KNUST Teaching Hospital, once fully operational, is expected to serve as a major hub for clinical training, medical research, and specialised healthcare delivery for Ghana and the West African sub-region.

The President, John Dramani Mahama, on Monday, May 12, 2026, assented to the recently passed Legal Education Bill into law. This obviously marks a significant step towards reforming legal education and expanding access to aspiring lawyers. Yet, beyond the legislative victory lies a deeper truth: no meaningful freedom or progress is ever achieved without the sacrifices and dedication of selfless individuals.

For years, concerns about limited access to legal education in Ghana sparked debate among students, educators and policymakers. Many qualified candidates were denied the opportunity to pursue professional legal training due to structural constraints. The new Act represents not just policy reform, but the culmination of persistent advocacy, courage and commitment from individuals who chose to challenge the status quo for the greater good.

One of the most defining moments in this struggle occurred on 7th October 2019, when law students embarked on a peaceful demonstration to demand fairness and reform. What began as a lawful expression of concern was met with force, police brutality, arrests, the firing of rubber bullets and the use of water cannons. Images and accounts from that day revealed the heavy price some were willing to pay simply to be heard. Yet, even in the face of intimidation, the resolve of these students did not waver.

History consistently reminds us that progress is never accidental. It is built on the shoulders of people who are willing to endure setbacks, criticism and even physical harm.

In the case of Ghana’s legal education reform, students raised their voices, legal practitioners pushed for fairness and leaders eventually took bold steps to enact change. These efforts were not driven by personal gain, but by a shared vision of a more inclusive and just system.

Selflessness is often the unseen force behind transformation. Those who stood firm during moments of adversity, especially during the events of October 2019, may not have known when change would come, but they persisted nonetheless. Their sacrifices have now paved the way for future generations of students who will have a fairer chance to pursue legal careers and contribute meaningfully to society.

As Ghana embarks on implementing this new legal framework, it is important to recognize and honour the spirit of sacrifice that made it possible. True progress is sustained not only by laws and institutions, but by the continued willingness of individuals to put collective interest above personal comfort.

In the end, the passage of the Legal Education Act, 2026 (Act 1170) is more than a policy achievement, it is a testament to the enduring principle that freedom and progress are earned through the selfless efforts and sometimes the painful sacrifices of committed people.

Indeed, posterity would be kind to the President and his cabinet, the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic A. Ayine and his Deputy, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, the Parliament of Ghana, and the many scholars and citizens like Prof. Kwaku Asare (a.k.a. Prof. Kwaku Azar), Kofi Bentle, Esq who championed and sustained the call for this reform. The future generation of lawyers are grateful for this bold reform which is certainly, a game-changer and forward looking.

May this change work for the utmost benefit of all Ghanaians and the legal fraternity of Ghana!

Musician and music executive, Ricky Nana Agyemang, popularly known as Bullet, has accused rapper and entrepreneur, D-Black, of destroying the music career of singer, Miss Forson.

Speaking in an interview on Okay FM, Bullet claimed that D-Black started working with Miss Forson without informing him while she was signed to RuffTown Records.

According to Bullet, Miss Forson was a very talented artist who had great potential in the music industry.

He alleged that D-Black contacted the singer for reasons beyond music and failed to help her become successful after she joined his camp.

Bullet said D-Black should have officially contacted him if he wanted to work with the artist, since both owned record labels.

He also expressed disappointment over what he described as a lack of unity in the music industry, saying he remains saddened that Miss Forson’s talent did not receive the success it deserved.

D-Black is yet to publicly respond to the allegations.

The Ghana Hostels Limited (GHL) has called for an immediate apology from the Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, over his comments regarding rent charges at the Pentagon Hostel, University of Ghana, Legon campus.

In a statement dated May 13, 2026, the management of GHL stated that comments made by the Acting Rent Commissioner was without thorough investigation and has created a misleading impression about the hostel’s operations.

‘The impression created that SSNIT is exploiting students is wholly inaccurate and without basis,’ the statement added.

The company explained that it handles the day-to-day management, pricing structures, and tenancy arrangements independently although the facility is a Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) investment.

It stated that the comments made during the radio programme portrayed the institution as insensitive to the welfare of students and young people.

‘While we respect the right of individuals and media platforms to express opinions on matters of public interest, it is equally important that such commentary is fair, factual, and balanced,’ the statement said.

It further explained that a standard four-in-a-room at the old Pentagon Hostel cost GHS7,392 per academic year per student, while rooms at the new Pentagon cost GHS8,876 per academic year, stating that the figures translate into approximately GHS821.33 and GHS986.22 per month, respectively which includes water, electricity, and GHS100 for Junior Common Room (JCR) dues.

It stated that the rates are competitive and comparatively lower than those charged by several private hostels around the University of Ghana enclave.

GHL also addressed claims regarding an alleged GHS28,000 hostel fee, stating that no such amount exists within its standard pricing structure.

The company explained that a limited number of premium rooms fitted with extra amenities such as air conditioning and queen-size beds are available as optional accommodation choices and constitute less than five per cent of rooms at the hostel.

According to management, standard four-in-one rooms make up more than 65 per cent of the hostel’s total rooms, while two-in-one rooms account for about 30%.

The statement further clarified that all charges are based on the full academic year and not per semester, as allegedly suggested during the radio discussion.

DIRECTOR General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has lamented over the increasing reported cases of child sexual exploitation in recent times in the country.

Addressing journalists at the CID Headquarters, COP Yaako Donkor indicated that the crime has gained ground in recent times and become very complex to fight, as most offenders are relatives of the victims.

‘It has come to the attention of the Police Administration that this type of crime is increasing because it is relatively easy to commit, difficult to detect, and financially rewarding.

‘Sadly, in the current case under investigation, the offenders are close relatives of the victims, specifically an older brother and a mother, who ordinarily and under the law are responsible for the custody and care of the children,’ she disclosed.

Addressing the recent rescue of four victims of child sexual exploitation, COP Yaako Donkor indicated that with the aid of Australian Federal Police and INTERPOL, they have arrested three Ghanaians for taking, production, publication and processing of indecent images, photographs and videos of children contrary to Section 62(1)(a), (b), (c) and (d) of the Cyber Security Act, 2020 (Act 1038).

Narrating the incident leading to the arrest, the CID boss indicated that in January 2026, INTERPOL Accra received an intelligence report from INTERPOL Canberra in Australia and the Crimes Against Children Unit of the INTERPOL General Secretariat regarding a case of child sexual exploitation.

The intelligence was shared by the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation’s Victim Identification Team.

According to the intelligence report, an Australian offender, who was arrested in 2025 and is currently standing trial in Australia, received child sexual exploitation material from facilitators based in Ghana.

Records further showed that the offender transferred funds to the facilitators in Ghana in exchange for child sexual exploitation material involving victims also located in Ghana.

COP Yaako Donkor further indicated that the Australian authorities had requested the Ghana Police Service to conduct investigations aimed at rescuing the victims and arresting the suspects.

‘Further investigations conducted by a team comprising officers from INTERPOL Accra and the Child Digital Forensics and Cybercrime Unit, under the supervision of the Director General of the CID, led to the arrest of two suspects and the rescue of two victims aged between seven and 13 years in the Ashanti Region.

‘Subsequently, one additional suspect was arrested, and two more victims aged six and seven years were rescued in the Bono Region,’ she mentioned.

She added that all three suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, while the victims are in the care of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in the respective regions.

‘I want to caution the general public that the police are actively collaborating with international partners and all relevant stakeholders to combat this crime, which dehumanises victims, negatively affects their self-esteem, and places their future in jeopardy,’ she noted.

The Ghana Water Company Limited has announced that over 16 communities in the Greater Accra Metropolis will experience temporary water distribution challenges due to technical issues at the Weija Water Treatment Plant.

Affected areas include Dansoman, Mamprobi, Mataheko, Laterbiokorshie, Korle-bu, La Paz, MacCarthy Hill, Gbawe, Mallam, Tesano, Darkuman, North Kaneshie, Dome, Achimota, Anyaa, Ablekuma and surrounding communities.

Management of the Ghana Water Company Limited has attributed this development to the Weija Water Treatment Plant which is currently experiencing some technical challenges which have affected water production and distribution to some parts of western Accra.

Renowned Broadcast Journalist, Nana Aba Anamoah, has advised the youth not to be pressured with the flashy lifestyle of some celebrities, as most of them have ‘illegal’ businesses funding their lifestyle.

In a post on X, Nana Aba encouraged the youth to be content with their lifestyle and stay true to themselves.

Nana Aba Anamoah’s comment follows the recent arrest of Ghanaian socialite and businessman, Joshua Kojo Anane Boateng, popularly known as SoAfrican, over allegedly drugging, sexually assaulting, and sharing intimate videos of women without their consent.

The arrest was made on May 6, 2026, at his East Legon residence, where police retrieved several electronic devices, including iPhones, a MacBook, and an external hard drive, as well as empty sachets suspected to contain controlled substances like alprazolam (Xanax) and midazolam.

SoAfrican, known for his lifestyle influencer status and connections with prominent Ghanaians, allegedly operated a Telegram platform called ‘VIP Sleep Fetish 2025’ where he shared explicit content involving unsuspecting victims. He’s been arraigned before a court and investigations are ongoing.
