A delegation from the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), led by its Chief Executive Officer, Edudzi Tameklo, Esq., has paid a working visit to the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).

The delegation toured key operational facilities to assess progress and verify compliance following the Authority’s approval for the refinery to resume full operations.

During a meeting with the Managing Director of TOR, Edmond Kombat, Esq., and the General Management team, TOR expressed appreciation for the NPA’s instrumental support in the refinery’s revival. The Managing Director noted that effective management has resulted in fully stocked tanks-clear evidence of improved operational efficiency.

Commending TOR’s leadership and workforce, Mr. Tameklo reaffirmed his commitment to championing the refinery’s restoration, stating: ‘I will be the number one champion for the need to support TOR, because if TOR is working, it makes my work easier.’

Drawing on insights from his recent visit to the Dangote Refinery, Mr. Tameklo highlighted the imperative for scale, efficiency, and modernisation. He underscored the importance of automation, noting that ‘no one should be sent to go and turn a valve’. He further stressed the shared responsibility of the NPA and TOR to safeguard plant integrity, cautioning that approvals must be grounded in safety and operational readiness: ‘We must be mindful of our responsibility to ensure that we do not say ‘proceed’ when what is required is ‘stop work’, because the integrity of the plant must not be compromised.’

Mr. Tameklo also emphasised the broader impact of TOR’s revival on Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector, including enhanced price stability and significant foreign exchange savings through reduced reliance on imported petroleum products.

The visit concluded with a facility tour to confirm that TOR is operational and fully compliant with regulatory requirements. TOR Management expressed sincere appreciation to the CEO and Management of the NPA for their continued support.

As Ghana’s premier refinery, the Tema Oil Refinery’s return to full operations delivers substantial national benefits-strengthening energy security, stabilising fuel prices, creating jobs, and improving foreign exchange management.

Abu Trica’s close friend, Daniel Yusif, was arrested at Kotoka International Airport on January 14, 2026, while trying to flee Ghana. According to reports, Daniel, who had gone into hiding after Abu Trica’s arrest, was apprehended by the police and other state security agencies at the Kotoka International Airport as he attempted to flee the country.

According to Blakk Rasta, Daniel’s wife was initially taken into police custody to get her husband to turn himself in after he went on the run. He noted that the young man failed to turn himself in and initially attempted to leave the country through various land borders.

However, security operatives had been positioned to block him from travelling outside Ghana.

A team of Ghana Navy personnel from Naval Base Nutekpor have seized 162, 25-litre gallons and 32, 200-litre barrels filled with fuel in an illegal bunkering operation.

The operations were conducted following an intelligence-led anti-illegal bunkering exercise along the Abeliakorpe and Atokukorpe landing beaches in Aflao, Volta Region.

The operations, which took place on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 0500 to 1340 hours, targeted several stash houses and makeshift structures, resulting in the discovery of the gallons of fuel.

In a related operation on Thursday, January 15, 2026, the Ghana Navy accosted seven modified, specially built canoes known as ‘Dendes’, suspected of illicit bunkering along the Keta-Denu-Aflao coastline in the Volta Region.

The seized canoes contained 378 empty barrels engineered for smuggling fuel at sea. The canoes were seized and towed to the Tema Harbour after the perpetrators fled upon spotting the Navy Ship.

The Ghana Navy, in a statement, has stated that it remains dedicated to its mission of securing the nation’s maritime domain and urges coastal communities to report suspicious activities, thereby protecting national security, marine biodiversity, and the sustainability of the country’s blue economy.

The Board and Partners of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) have announced the official opening of nominations for the 27th edition of Ghana’s premier music awards scheme.

The scheme is accepting submissions for all commercially released music works issued within the 2025 calendar year, from January 1 to December 31, 2025.

Eligible submissions include works by artistes, artiste managements, record labels, producers, instrumentalists, music composers, and other key stakeholders within the Ghanaian music industry.

According to Charterhouse, organisers of the award, all entries must be submitted exclusively through the official online portal at (www.entry.ghanamusicawards.com) , on or before Sunday, 8th February 2026.

‘The Telecel Ghana Music Awards remain committed to celebrating excellence, innovation, and impact within Ghana’s music industry, while providing a credible platform for recognition and industry growth,’ they stated.

The Northern Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) recorded 1,400 prank emergency calls in a single week and 67,200 in 2025, diverting critical resources and putting lives and property at risk.

Over 100 prank calls were received in a day in 2025, which does not help those who really need the emergency lines.

The Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, ADOI Hudu Baba, indicated that the Northern Region recorded a total number of 377 fires from January 1 to December 31, 2025, with an estimated cost of damage to properties at GHS159,081,662 as against 373 fires with a corresponding estimated cost of damage to properties at GHS68,217,224 for the same period in 2024, and advised the general public to avoid pranking the service on its emergency numbers.

‘This rate of increase in the fire outbreaks recorded for the period under review was 1% and 4 in absolute figures,’ he said.

He noted that the cost of items salvaged from these fires amounted to GHS150,629,102,789 for the period under review as against GHS1,024,438,464 for the same period in 2024.

‘This gives credence to a lot more properties saved from fire ruins. An average of 1 fire was recorded in a day during the year in 2025,’ he stated.

The Northern Regional GNFS Public Relations Officer disclosed that two lives were lost through fires, however, no life was lost through flooding, bee evasion and heights rescue. On the Road Traffic Collision (RTC) front, the year under review recorded 1 casualty (injury) while two lives were unfortunately lost through four road traffic collision incidents in 2025 as against 20 casualties (injuries), four lives being lost through five incidents for the same period in 2024, indicating a decrease.

‘145 out before arrival cases were recorded in 2025 as against 143 for the same period in 2024. January and December recorded the highest fires of 65 and 52, representing 17.2% and 13.8% respectively. Domestic fires led by 148, commercial 54, electrical 54, and bushfires 14. The rest are vehicular 17, institutional 17, industrial 2 and other fires 19,’ he disclosed.

He noted that some of the causes of these fires are electrical faults which stem from circuit overload, arcing, short circuit, inferior cables, compromised or poorly done electrical installations, over-aged wires and earthing problems; gas leakages, unattended cooking; unattended lit candles; mosquito coils, matches, cigarette, poorly done hot works from welding, children, bush burning and deliberate acts.

‘The fires recorded suggest a marginal upward trend. It increased from 373 in 2024 to 377 in 2025, indicating a difference of 4 as an increase. The high number of out before arrival cases of 145 also suggests that the education and sensitisation programmes of the service in the region are impacting positively on the general public, as they are now able to manage small fires by themselves. The positive results can be attributed to the Command sensitisation campaign and the fire safety education in both the media landscape and all public spaces such as schools, markets, churches, mosques,’ he stated.

He, however, hinted that the slight increase in fires was as a result of the harsh harmattan weather experienced in the first and last three months of 2025 and non-adherence to basic fire safety precautions in, especially domestic settings.

The Northern Regional Command called on the general public to make positive changes in their attitudes with regards to the use of naked lights, gas cooking apparatuses, electricity and electrical appliances to forestall the occurrences of preventable fires.

Diana Hamilton emphasised that this year is another affair with God, saying, ‘So all I want to be is to be in His presence and then to watch Him do mind-blowing things.’

She also announced that leading up to the event, the Diana Hamilton team will embark on various outreaches to spread the gospel through ministration.’

‘And so the prayer is that this year’s experience, building up to it, the night itself, we will have an experience where you do not want to leave. God should cause people to have encounters in their rooms,’ she added.

The launch also witnessed the renewal of Diana Hamilton’s contract with the Kasapreko Company Limited as Brand Ambassador of the Awake Mineral Water. She expressed gratitude to the company for their years of support.

Ghana recorded more than 17,000 tuberculosis (TB) cases between January and October, 2025, emphasising the need for more sensitisation to help end the disease by 2030 despite some progress.

The Deputy Programme Manager of the National TB Control Programme, Dr. Rita Patricia Amenyo, who disclosed this to the media at a sensitisation workshop organised by the Ghana National TB Voice Network, said the numbers are expected to rise when the full year for 2025 is recorded.

Dr. Amenyo also indicated that men continue to account for a higher proportion of reported cases than women, while children account for a smaller share of cases though about 700 children were diagnosed with TB by October 2025, representing about 4.2 per cent of the cases.

Dr. Amenyo said that although the increase in detected cases suggests some improvement in case finding, Ghana remains far below the World Health Organisation (WHO) target of about 44,000 cases expected to be detected annually.

She said, ‘January to October ending, we have about 17,000 people with TB. We are expecting to find 22,000, so once we have complete data for November and December, the numbers may increase. What this tells us is that Ghana has a very long way to end TB. The whole world is looking at ending TB by 2030, and per WHO standards, we are to find about 44,000 people in Ghana every year who have TB,’ she noted.

Dr. Amenyo stated that the gap between expected and detected cases shows thousands of people affected with TB remain undiagnosed, adding that meeting the national and global targets would require more efforts to address the situation while also calling for more diagnostic equipment.

‘We need a lot of funding support, a lot of health workers who are willing to do more to screen people for TB in the facilities. As for the cases, they are there, but nobody would come with TB written on their face. So, we have to look and find,’ she said.

The workshop formed part of broader efforts to strengthen awareness, improve early case detection, and support advocacy on Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB).

Touching on the symptoms of the disease, the Deputy Programme Manager explained that TB is an infectious disease which could affect almost any part of the body, although it mostly attacks the lungs, citing symptoms such as cough, fever, weight loss, night sweats, chest pain among others.

While calling for sustained government support and increased funding to help eliminate the disease, she also urged the public to seek medical attention promptly whenever they develop any symptom, as tuberculosis is preventable and curable.

The two-day event also brought together health workers, TB champions who are survivors of DR-TB, and selected journalists, with a focus on deepening understanding and improving community engagement and reporting.

TWO YOUNG daughters of a policeman, who resides at Abuakwa-Zongo near Kumasi, have sustained severe body injuries after their house caught fire when their father was on night patrol duty.

The two victims, identified as Christabel Adutwumwaa Osei, aged 9 years old, and Tracy Serwaa Osei, aged 6 years old, were rushed to the hospital by some Good Samaritans for treatment.

The fire, reportedly, started at 11:30 p.m. on December 30, 2025, when their father, Inspector Osei Kofi, stationed at the Nkawie Divisional Police Headquarters, was on patrol duty with his colleagues.

Abuakwa District Police sitrep said preliminary investigations indicated that the children were alone in the house when the fire commenced, but some people in the community managed to douse it.

‘On 02/01/2025 at about 1600 hours, Inspector Osei Kofi of the Nkawie Divisional Police Headquarters, residing at Abuakwa-Zongo near SDA Church, reported at the Abuakwa Police Station that on Tuesday, 30/12/2025, at about 1130 hours, while on patrol duty at Nkawie Kwanfinfin, he received a distress call from his landlord, David Agyapong, informing him that his rented apartment had been engulfed by fire.

‘As a result of the incident, his two daughters, Christabel Adutwumwaa Osei, aged 9 years, and Tracy Serwaa Osei, aged 6 years, sustained serious injuries. His personal effects, including unspecified household items, were all destroyed by the fire,’ the police report disclosed.

The victims, according to the police, were immediately rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, where they are currently on admission at the Red Ward of the Emergency Unit and receiving treatment.

‘Preliminary investigations revealed that the children were alone at home at the time of the incident. The fire was extinguished by neighbours,’ the police statement further said, adding that the victims were responding to treatment.

Meanwhile, the authorities concerned are investigating to find out the exact cause of the inferno.

Gold production and trade are characterised by widespread informality, entrenched smuggling networks, weak traceability systems, asymmetric information between producers and buyers, selective enforcement of regulations, and the systematic externalisation of environmental and social costs to the public.

Cross-border illicit trade further distorts domestic pricing, undermines lawful market channels, and renders price signals unreliable. Under such structural conditions, market outcomes do not reflect efficiency, fairness, or the national interest; failures are systemic, persistent, and self-reinforcing.

In this context, coordinated state intervention through an institution such as GoldBod is not a distortion of an otherwise efficient market. It is a necessary #corrective #mechanism aimed at restoring transparency, preserving national values, safeguarding public resources, and realigning the gold economy with constitutional and developmental objectives.

The limitation of textbook economics becomes clearer when viewed through a practical lens. If a household’s only asset is a house valued at US$1 million, and a medical emergency requires US$100,000 to save the life of a loved one, strict adherence to theoretical market value would suggest rejecting any offer below the house’s ‘true’ price.

Yet, the household would rationally accept a much lower offer if that were the only way to preserve life. In such situations, #human #value #takes #precedence #over #theoretical #efficiency.

Similarly, in Ghana’s gold economy, public interest cannot be subordinated to market neutrality where market conditions are fundamentally broken.

Strong state coordination is therefore justified, not as an ideological preference, but as a practical response to structural distortions.

Moreover, Ghana’s mineral resources, particularly gold, are not ordinary commodities. They are strategic national assets directly linked to foreign exchange stability, fiscal revenues, environmental sustainability, and national security.

GoldBod must therefore be assessed primarily on its ability to retain national value and protect long-term #public #interest, rather than on narrow measures of short-term financial profitability or theoretical market efficiency.
