The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested two young men in connection with the robbery and murder of a 28-year-old woman at Asokore Mampong near Kumasi, in an incident that has reignited public concern over rising street crime in the region.

The suspects, identified as Farouk Iddris, 20, a motorbike mechanic and rider, and Salim Mohammed, 19, a motorbike mechanic and rickshaw (Pragia) rider, are alleged to have attacked and killed the victim during a robbery on December 6, 2025, at about 5:00 p.m. Police identified the deceased as Silver, also referred to as Sylvia, Ngozi.

According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the two suspects robbed the woman of her iPhone 11 Pro during the attack. Preliminary investigations indicate that in the course of the robbery, one of the suspects allegedly stabbed the victim with a knife, inflicting fatal injuries.

Following the incident, the suspects reportedly went into hiding. However, acting on intelligence, a joint team from the Regional Police Headquarters and the Anti-Robbery Unit arrested them on December 12, 2025, at about 9:00 p.m., at their hideout in Aboabo, Kumasi.

In a statement, the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, said items retrieved from the suspects include the stolen iPhone 11 Pro and a zigzag-edged knife believed to have been used in the murder.

He disclosed that during interrogation, both suspects admitted to committing the robbery, while Salim Mohammed, who was the pillion rider on the day of the incident, identified the knife as the weapon used to stab the deceased.

A search conducted in the room of Farouk Iddris also led to the retrieval of additional offensive weapons, including machetes and knives, which have been retained for evidential purposes. Police say the suspects remain in custody and will be arraigned before court as investigations continue.

In a related development, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has also arrested three other suspected armed robbers believed to be behind a series of street robberies across parts of Kumasi and its environs.

The suspects, namely Abdul Fatau, 22; Philip Nyarko, 24; and Smack Haddy, 21, were picked up in connection with separate robbery incidents at KNUST, Asokore Mampong, Kenyase, Antoa Bosore, Maayanka, Ayeduase and surrounding communities.

Items recovered from this second group include 59 iPhones, six Android phones, four tablets, five laptops, as well as a knife and a cutlass believed to have been used in some of the crimes. Police said the suspects have confessed to their involvement in the robberies and are currently assisting with investigations.

Addressing the media, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Osei Akoto Arthur, described the arrests as a major breakthrough in the Command’s ongoing fight against violent and street crime. He commended officers involved in the intelligence-led operations for their professionalism and diligence, and assured residents of the Command’s commitment to ensuring safety and security across the region.

DCOP Akoto Arthur appealed to members of the public who may have lost mobile phones or other valuables in recent robberies within the affected areas to report to the police to help with investigations. He also urged the public to continue supporting the police with timely information to help curb criminal activities.

All suspects, police said, will be put before court in due course to face the full rigours of the law.

A man believed to be affiliated to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Akwasi, has been killed after he was allegedly attacked by a swarm of bees in the Kpandai district of the Northern Region.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE, indicates that the deceased was chased by the bees while he was riding a motorbike, causing him to crash into a nearby gutter due to the severe bites of the bees.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the hospital for preservation and autopsy.

Initially, the deceased was described as an NDC executive who participated in a meeting organised by some national executives to unite the party ahead of the Kpandai parliamentary rerun slated for December 30, 2025.

However, the Kpandai NDC Communication Officer, Gregory Anijadong, at a press conference, clarified that the deceased was not an executive of the party, claiming that he was not attacked at the meeting venue.

He, however, indicated that indeed the NDC branch executives in the region held a meeting ahead of the parliamentary election to be rerun in the constituency, but none of the members were involved in the bee attack.

‘The NDC gathered with branch executives from 152 polling stations. Contrary to circulating reports, the meeting concluded successfully. Tragically, an individual, not an NDC executive, lost his life in an unfortunate motor accident involving bees while on his way home after a meeting. The deceased was reportedly representing his community chief at a separate meeting called by the overlord of Kpandai, Nana Atorsah Bristiam Okori II,’ he claimed.

Meanwhile, some persons have alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) brought three Mallams from Niger who lodged close to the meeting grounds of the NDC and allegedly invoked the deadly bees to disrupt the meeting.

Kpandai Election Rerun

The 2024 Kpandai Parliamentary Election saw Matthew Nyindam, representing the New Patriotic Party, declared winner with 27,947 votes (53.47%) against Daniel Nsala Wakpal of the National Democratic Congress, who garnered 24,213 votes (46.33%).

The NDC candidate challenged the December 7, 2024 parliamentary election results at a High Court in Tamale.

The High Court judgement, delivered on November 24, 2025, had annulled the entire Kpandai election and ordered a rerun within 30 days.

Following the court’s judgement, the Clerk of Parliament on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, declared the Kpandai seat as vacant through a formal notification to the Electoral Commission (EC).

The EC then announced a rerun of the Kpandai Constituency Parliamentary Election on December 30, 2025.

In a press release signed by the EC Deputy Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Department, Fred Tetteh, the Commission stated that the rerun will be contested only by the three candidates who participated in the original 2024 Parliamentary Election for the Kpandai Constituency.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Kpandai Constituency, Matthew Nyindam, has filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking to quash the judgement of the High Court, Commercial Division in Tamale, which annulled his parliamentary election victory.

Indiscipline is gaining traction in the country. It is now a canker which has infested almost all spheres of our national life.

Even the school system is not spared the social canker which has already compromised our values as Ghanaians.

Recently, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, had cause to raise a red flag about the social challenge which has intermittently threatened national security in direct and indirect forms.

Police Stations have been attacked and, in some instances, vehicles and structures belonging to the security agency torched by hooligans with worrying impunity.

What is required of us as a people is national action bereft of insincerity. Anything short of this will only give the canker more traction and the nation shall be the loser.

Last week, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) expressed concern about an assault by old students of the Kade Senior High Technical School. The students reportedly attacked the teacher out of anger and frustration over the victim’s strict invigilation during one of the recent West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers.

Nothing substantial or significant has taken place in terms of identifying the culprits and meting out appropriate disciplinary action against them, the reason for which is not far-fetched: the Ghana Education Service (GES) was not notified, and we can bet as well as the Police.

In a solidarity action, the teachers’ umbrella association is demanding punitive action lest they embark on a national strike.

That was not the first time students had assaulted a teacher; pockets of such incidents have been recorded, and unless something is done to deter future recurrences, more such acts of indiscipline will be witnessed.

As it is the trend these days, a video of Mr. Michael Quayson, the Kade Senior High Technical School teacher, as he endured his ordeal was shared mockingly.

Those who perpetrated the act of criminality knew what they were doing and so should be made to bear the consequences as prescribed by law.

It is our hope that the demand of NAGRAT will be met lest we are faced with a situation where teachers abandon classrooms because one of them was assaulted by past students.

The authorities must prove that they are on top of their assignments, as this would reassure teachers that they would be shielded against such nonsense in future.

Of course as the NAGRAT noted, the safety and dignity of teachers are non-negotiable, hence our joining their demand for immediate action.

It is regrettable that although the incident occurred on October 5, 2025, same was not reported to the GES. It took the GES to see the video before taking note of the incident.

There is good reason why incidents are reported to the appropriate quarters such as the relevant organisations and, above all, the relevant law enforcement agency.

We hope to read soon about the arrest and quizzing of the ‘bad boys’ who beat up their former teacher and posted a video of their act on social media or had their friends do that.

STRAY CATTLE have, reportedly, been posing serious threat to drivers, passengers and other road users at Gyinyase in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The animals, according to eyewitness accounts, are usually seen plying the road right in front of the Kumasi High School around 9 p.m. when the place looks dark.

Their presence on the busy road has the potential of causing serious vehicular accident, which can lead to severe body injuries or even deaths of innocent people.

When the DAILY GUIDE visited the place last Tuesday evening, at exactly 9 p.m., the animals, numbering about 10, were seen walking right in the middle of the busy road.

Surprisingly, there was no herder in charge of the stray cattle, who were seen walking aimlessly on the road, in a manner that posed serious threat, notably to road users.

Some residents of Gyinyase, who spoke to the paper, expressed their disappointment and frustration over how the animals have been roaming the streets.

According to them, they have persistently appealed to the Asokwa Municipal Assembly to intervene, so that the cattle would not roam the roads, but to no avail.

‘The assembly is waiting for the cattle to cause accident and claim human lives on the road before they will take action, and that’s very bad,’ Kwaku Boakye, a resident, lamented.

Another resident of Gyinyase, who gave his name as Yaw Oppong, said ‘there are no street lights here, so the presence of the cattle on the road can lead to accidents.’

On her part, Madam Afia Animah, appealed to the authorities concerned to take action, saying, ‘people shouldn’t die before they act.’

The Director of Finance at the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Edith Opokua Adumuah, has told a High Court in Accra that she did not know the purpose of the three cheques totaling GHS49.1 million for which Kwabena Adu-Boahene and his wife are standing trial, explaining that under National Security (NS) ‘need-to-know’ protocols, only top-level officials would have such clearance to be aware of the transaction.

‘In your position as Head of Finance under the National Security Coordinator, can you tell what the GHS49.1 million, the total of three cheques, were for,’ Samuel Atta Akyea, counsel for the accused, asked during cross-examination.

‘My Lord, I do not know,’ the witness answered. Mr. Atta Akyea then pressed that ‘So, you agree that National Security persons with clearance to know will know?’ and Ms. Adumuah confirmed, ‘Yes, my Lord.’

When further asked who will have the clearance to know the purpose of the funds, the witness replied, ‘My Lord, I assume the Director General, National Security Coordinator, maybe the Minister of the National Security, or anybody at the topmost hierarchy of the National Security Council.’

Mr. Atta Akyea also explored the control of Special Operations Accounts by pointing out to the witness that before the establishment of NSB on December 29, 2020, all funding and financial operations of the BNC department in the office of the National Security Coordinator were conducted under the authority of the National Security Coordinator.

Ms. Adumuah replied, ‘Yes, my Lord’. When asked who opened the Special Operations Account at Fidelity Bank, she said, ‘the National Security Coordinator, the late Joshua Kyeremeh.’

‘You have also confirmed that the late Kyeremeh was a signatory to the Special Operations Account with Fidelity Bank?’ the lawyer asked and the witness said, ‘Yes, my Lord.’

Mr. Atta Akyea added, ‘It follows from what you told this Honourable Court that it is the National Security Coordinator who controls all financial transactions of BNC?’ and she confirmed, ‘Yes, my Lord.’

‘Kwabena Adu-Boahene, before the establishment of NSB on December 29, 2020, could never transact any financial business on the Fidelity Bank Account without express approval and participation of the National Security Coordinator?’ the lawyer pressed and the witness replied, ‘Yes, my Lord.’

BNC Accounts

Mr. Atta Akyea then shifted attention to the nature of accounts by pointing out to the witness that the Account described as ‘Director BNC’ is not a general administration, to which Ms. Adumuah agreed.

‘You will agree with me that all Special Operations Accounts, including the one referred to as ‘Director BNC,’ have not been subjected to the Auditor-General’s routine audits?’ he asked and the witness said, ‘Yes, my Lord.’

Mr. Atta Akyea also clarified the role of institutions in fund transfers. He asked, ‘From Exhibit A, which you’re holding, it is the National Security Secretariat that is requesting the transfer of funds and not the BNC?’

Ms. Adumuah confirmed that the account number is the Coordinator’s Account used for BNC operations.

He asked, ‘It is the National Security Council Secretariat that requested the transfer of funds?’ and she said, ‘Yes, my Lord.’

Exchange Rate Comparison

The witness also confirmed that based on officially published Bank of Ghana exchange rates, GHS49.1 million could not, at any material time in 2020 or 2021, be the cedi equivalent of US$7 million as alleged by the prosecution.

‘At an exchange rate of 5.87 as at April 6, 2020, what is the cedi equivalent of US$7 million?’ Mr. Atta Akyea asked, and the witness said GHS41,090,000.

‘GHS41,090,000 is not equal to GHS49,100,000?’ the lawyer pressed, and the witness agreed while confirming the difference of GHS8,010,000.

THE NATIONAL Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has elected new executives to steer the affairs of the association for the next four years.

At its 14th National Delegate Conference in Sunyani last Thursday, over 220 delegates from all 16 regions of the country overwhelmingly endorsed key leaders of the association and voted for others to take charge of the affairs of the teachers’ body for the ensuing years.

Jacob Anaba, who was the Vice President during Angel Carbonu’s tenure, was unanimously endorsed as the association’s new President. He went unopposed.

The new Vice President, who was also the Gender Desk Coordinator in the previous administration, Rebecca Ocran Abaidoo, was also endorsed, including the Deputy General Secretary, Kwamikorkor Senyo Rene, who was also elected unopposed.

The General Secretary, Michael Akanvibe Ayuraboya, polled 130 to beat his only contender Godwin Awonoor, who got 98 out of a total valid votes of 226 cast.

Other positions voted for included Organising Secretary, Adams Namawu; Financial Officer, Eric Owusu; and Gender Desk Coordinator, Linda Boadiwaa.

The outgone President, Angel Carbonu, congratulated the new executives and wished them the best of luck.

In his acceptance remark, Jacob Anaba thanked his colleagues for the confidence reposed in them, promising to work hard to raise the professional body to another level.

He promised to ensure their professional allowances like car maintenance allowance and others, including teacher promotion, are done on time to motivate the Ghanaian teacher.

Allowances for Ghanaian soldiers on United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions are once again on the spot attracting assortment of commentaries.

A media commentator, Captain Smart, last week claimed that ‘young officers are dying’ over monies the Ghanaian government pays them which are far below what the UN pays.

The commentary has attracted the attention of the military hierarchy, which hardly responds to such commentaries.

According to the commentator, each soldier on peacekeeping mission is paid $300 daily by the UN, but the Ghanaian government pays the soldiers only $35.

In other words, Ghanaian peacekeepers receive less than GHS400 daily, adding that soldiers pay to be considered for such missions.

He disclosed that some 250 soldiers have returned home following a decision by the UN that it is no longer necessary to keep them. These soldiers have been on the mission for only seven months, but returning so abruptly after paying so much to be considered for the mission.

Details available to DAILY GUIDE indicates however that each peacekeeping soldier is entitled to $46, but Ghana gives $35, while the remaining $11 is used to support each soldier’s $700 air fare for leave in Ghana, six weeks pre-operations training, ?money for internet in theatre, ?welfare of troops and ?medal day celebrations.

Others are official visits, ?maintenance of weapons, ?funding for in missions festivities (Xmas, Easter).

The Government of Ghana adds up additional funding to support the troops’ stay in the mission.

The claim that the UN pays anything more than $46 is mischievous and a plot to incite troops, a source has noted.

The facts are available on the UN website for verification.

UN websites have stated that countries volunteering uniformed personnel to peacekeeping operations are reimbursed by the UN at a standard rate approved by the General Assembly.

As of December 5, 2025, the average annual pay for a UN peacekeeper in the US is $31,133 a year. That works out to approximately $14.97 an hour. This is the equivalent of $598/week.

It will be recalled that in 2017 this subject popped up, compelling the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to deny claims that troops undertaking peacekeeping missions were being underpaid.

The military at the time indicated that reports that suggested that troops were being paid $31.00 per day, instead of the promised $35.00 were false.

The then President Nana Akufo-Addo, in March 2017, announced an increase in peacekeeping allowances from $31 to $35, which took retrospective effect from January 2017.

He made the announcement when he addressed an end-of-year get-together of the Ghana Armed Forces (WASSA).

A portion of the GAF reaction read, ‘The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has noted with concern a false publication in the Daily Post Newspaper on October 12, 2017 claiming that troops on UN peacekeeping operations are being paid $31.00 instead of the $35.00 promised by Government. GAF wishes to state categorically that this information is totally false and without any iota of truth. It is hereby reiterated that the approved rate of payment remains $35.00 per soldier per day without any intention of reducing it.’
