Proceed of crimes: ICPC sells seized assets, rakes in N1.8bn

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) said it has sold some of the assets confirmed to be proceeds of crime, which it seized and subsequently forfeited to the federal government by the courts.

The commission said it realised a total of N1,868,969,400.00 from the auction of 23 forfeited assets in 2024 – the highest amount recorded since its establishment.

Demola Bakare, the spokesman of the commission, told journalists that the announcement was made during the 2025 meeting of the Asset Disposal Committee, following a report presented by the Proceeds of Crime Department (POCD).

According to him, the exercise was carried out in line with the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act (POCA) 2022, which empowers the commission to recover, manage, and dispose of assets derived from illicit activities.

He stated that the report revealed that out of the 23 assets disposed of in 2024, 10 were successfully auctioned in December 2024, while seven could not be sold due to low bids that fell below the approved threshold or forced-sale value.

The ICPC spokesman said the remaining six assets were affected by legal, security, or encroachment challenges, adding that four unsold assets have been rolled over into the 2025 disposal programme.

‘For the 2025 exercise, the Committee has presented 30 movable and immovable assets for disposal. These include four rolled-over assets from 2024, twelve immovable assets, three movable assets and eleven batches of perishable assets newly enrolled for auction.

‘A breakdown of the amount of money realized from the disposal revealed that perishable/ scrapped assets stood at N3,969,400.00, Off-cycle disposal sales (3 No. assets) valued at N975,000,000.00, while On-Cycle Disposal Sales (20 No. Assets) is valued at N890,000,000.00,’ Bakare said.

Presiding over the meeting, the ICPC Chairman, Musa Aliyu, commended the Proceeds of Crime Department for its effective implementation of the Commission’s mandate and emphasized that depriving the corrupt of their illicit gains remains one of the most potent strategies in combating corruption.

Aliyu further explained that civil forfeiture provides a faster, cheaper, and more transparent means of recovering stolen assets, while the conversion of confiscated assets into public value enhances national economic growth and rebuilds public confidence in the anti-corruption process.

Chelsea, other clubs to sign 3 Kwara Football Academy players

The Executive Chairman, Kwara Sports Commission, Coach Bolakale Mogaji, says Chelsea Football Club and several other international clubs have expressed interest in signing three players from the Kwara Football Academy.

Mogaji disclosed this on Wednesday in Ilorin during the 3rd Quarter Inter-Ministerial News Briefing organised by the Kwara Ministry of Communications.

According to the chairman, the players are Abduljelil Kamaldeen for Chelsea in England; Uthman Tajudeen for Brentford in London and Ifeanyi Ikechwukwu for Lueven in Belgium.

He said that the proceeds from the proposed contracts with the international clubs were expected to boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

Mogaji explained that arrangements were in top gear with scouts from the clubs who identified their preferred players currently undergoing rigorous evaluation.

The sports administrator also highlighted the historic achievement by Kwara United Football Club, which won this year’s prestigious President Federation Cup after a long period of time.

Mogaji stated that sports facilities at the George Innih Stadium Complex had been upgraded, including the construction of the first-of-its-kind eight-wing squash courts.

The chairman also revealed that the newly remodeled Pa Ladipo Indoor Sports Hall would soon be ready for use.

He described Abdulrazaq as a passionate lover of sports and praised his huge investment in sports development as a powerful tool for youth development.

Defection: Okowa Still Under Probe – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says investigation into the alleged corruption of a former governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, still remains active, debunking the allegation that he is being shielded because he defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The anti-graft agency said justice will be served on his case, emphasising that no suspect enjoys immunity from investigation or prosecution because of political alignment.

Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the EFCC, made this clarification during a press briefing which held at the headquarters of the commission to commemorate his second anniversary in office.

Daily Trust reports that Okowa had in November 2024 been arrested by the anti-graft agency over the alleged diversion of N1.3tn in oil derivation funds.

The former governor and his successor, Sheriff Oborevwori, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in April 2025.

After their defection, some Nigerians, both online and offline, accused the commission of shielding the former governor because of his alliance with the government at the Centre.

But Olukoyede, who spoke through the Director of Legal and Prosecution at the EFCC, Sylvanus Tahir, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, rejected the accusation, maintaining that the EFCC operates independently and without political bias.

He said, ‘Someone asked the question that it is alleged that politicians who jump ship to the ruling party are shielded. The simple answer is that it’s not true.

‘I think the reference was made to the case of a former governor of Delta State. To the best of my knowledge, that case is still undergoing investigation. And in due course, justice will be served.’

The EFCC’s legal chief explained that the agency prefers to complete a comprehensive investigation before filing charges, particularly in high-profile or politically sensitive cases.

‘We have had situations where cases were rushed to court, and the outcomes were not always good. So we would like to do a thorough job. When we go to court, Nigerians will see what the case is all about,’ he said.

Tahir emphasised that no suspect enjoys immunity from investigation or prosecution because of political alignment.

‘There’s no attempt or intention anywhere to shield anybody on account of switching parties – certainly not under this chairman,’ he stated.

Addressing criticisms that the EFCC has not recorded enough convictions of prominent figures, Tahir insisted that every case receives equal attention, regardless of the profile of those involved.

‘It’s been claimed that there are no high-profile convictions. Well, the simple answer is that for us here, crime is crime,’ he said.

‘Of course, when you are up against politically exposed persons, it is not a tea party. It takes time. For instance, a governor who spent eight years controlling a state and its resources – whatever allegations arise from his stewardship – it’s not something you rush to investigate within months or a year.’

He reaffirmed that the EFCC remains committed to pursuing all corruption matters, whether involving public officials or private individuals, with equal dedication and thoroughness.

Boko Haram Stages Multiple Attacks Across Borno, Yobe Communities

Suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have hit five communities in Borno and Yobe States.

The communities are Mafa, Dikwa, Marte and Ajiri in Borno, while Katarko was attacked in Yobe.

According to sources, the insurgents attacked a military checkpoint at Mafa.

Also, the insurgents were said to have overran the military barrack in the town and looted arms and ammunition.

‘They looted arms and ammunition and the newly procured operation motorcycles that we use to carry out operations in remote bushes. The number of attackers was so massive that no one could imagine,’ one of the security sources said.

However, it remained unclear whether there was a casualty on the side of the military, but a top security source confirmed the killing of many terrorists during the encounter.

‘They came in large numbers and engaged our men intensely but many of them were neutralised,’ he said.

A local source also said that no civilian life was lost, but the assailants looted foodstuff and other commodities and burnt down the transporting vehicles.

‘It’s a coordinated attack after 11pm on Wednesday, they shoot sporadically at the checkpoint where commuters are waiting for the military gate to be open for the to proceed with their journey.

‘The goods they looted were to be transported to Gambarou and other places. I’m not aware of any live being lost so far,’ he said.

He said the terrorists came in large numbers, heavily armed with weapons, four gun trucks, and riding over 100 motorcycles.

Similar attacks were also recorded in other town, including Marte, Dikwa, Ajiri in Borno and Katarko in Yobe State.

Clerics ask FG to create council to tackle religious violence

Christian leaders and human rights advocates have called on the federal government to establish a National Council on Freedom of Religion to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of religious violence across the country.

They warned that recurring killings and destruction of worship centres pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s unity and peace. The appeal was made on Wednesday during a roundtable organised by the Christian Awareness Initiative of Nigeria (CHAIN) in Abuja.

Speaking virtually, Revd Dr. Gideon Para-Mallam, President of the Para-Mallam Peace Foundation, condemned the growing culture of impunity surrounding mob killings in the name of blasphemy, lamenting that perpetrators are rarely brought to justice.

‘The debate over whether Christians are facing genocide is misplaced. The government should instead engage credible Muslim and Christian leaders to acknowledge the killings and commit to ending them. Let’s stop the politics and focus on saving lives,’ he said.

Similarly, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, Kaduna State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Country Director of the Global Peace Foundation, urged the government to enforce equal justice for all victims of faith-related violence.

‘Justice must not depend on who the victim is. Whenever a Christian or Muslim is attacked, we always hear excuses,’ he said, calling on faith leaders to unite beyond denominational lines to promote peace and understanding.

Also speaking, Barr. Joseph Danboyi, Head of the National Directorate of Religious Freedom at the Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON), attributed the rise in religious violence to weak prosecution and selective justice, stressing that both the judiciary and security agencies have failed to protect victims.

Kaduna train attack: How Mamu allegedly betrayed FG’s c’ttee – DSS operative

A prosecution witness has told the Federal High Court in Abuja how alleged terrorist negotiator, Tukur Mamu, frustrated negotiations for the release of passengers abducted during the 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train attack.

Mamu is facing charges bordering on terrorism offences, including receiving ransoms from families of victims of the Kaduna train attack of March 28, 2022, dealing with terrorist funds, obstructing the activities of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) committee to negotiate with those who kept hostage victims of the train attack, exchanging voice notes with Boko Haram spokesperson, among others.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, the presiding judge, Justice Muhammed Umar, refused the third bail application by Mamu.

The witness, who is an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), testified as the 6th prosecution witness behind the screen.

The witness told the court that Mamu’s move to position himself as the sole interlocutor between the government’s Chief of Defence Staff Action Committee and the terrorist hostage-takers made it difficult to release the initial 30 to 32 hostages on the same day.

‘So, being the spokesperson between the terrorists and the government side, the defendant probably communicated a different thing to the terrorists because on the scheduled day, the committee mobilised vehicles to convey about 30 to 32 hostages, but on reaching there, only 11 hostages were brought out,’ the witness said.

‘The committee felt betrayed and felt that the defendant undermined the committee’s effort by taking a decision unilaterally, and the committee wrote an interim report to the government and a copy which was also avail to us (DSS),’ he added.

He said the government had initially established different fronts of negotiation with the terrorists, which he rejected and pushed to be the sole negotiator, including coordinating the payment of N100m for hostages, whose family members could raise it, which they later increased to N1 billion.

Following the testimony, prosecution counsel, David Kaswe, applied to tendered some materials exhibits, without objection from the defence counsel, Johnson Usman (SAN), who said he will file any objection at the stage of address.

The items include: the generated photocopies of the photos of the newspaper publication, two photos of the rings and a stapled note, in addition to the certificate of compliance, $300, 000; N25, 690, 500; 150,840 Egyptian Pounds; 1000 India Rupee; 115 UAE Dirham; 2 Qatari Riyal and 16 coins of different currencies.

Others items tendered and admitted as exhibits were pump action rifle called Delta Magnum and two packs of the cartridges; licence for the rifle; two Oppo and Samsung phones and a Samsung tablet; and seven vehicles such as Toyota Camry, metallic gold colour; Honda CRV, metallic blue colour; Mercedes Benz E350, white colour; Lexus 250, white colour; Hyundai Equus; a Peugeot 508, black colour, and Peugeot 5008, maroon colour.

Justice Umar had adjourned the matter to November 25 and 26.

ISWAP threat: Security forces comb Ondo, Kogi forests

Combined security forces from the Nigerian military, police and the Department of State Services (DSS), have commenced combing some thick forests in Ondo and Kogi states, Daily Trust reports.

It was learnt that the exercise, which is being jointly carried out with the operatives of Amotekun, hunters and forest guards, was in a bid to avert impending attacks by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.

Credible sources told Daily Trust Tuesday night that the terrorists have infiltrated many communities in both states, with their cells being fortified in order to repeat the same scenario that happened at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo.

It would be recalled that three years ago, precisely on June 5, 2022, suspected terrorists with a connection with a global terrorist group, Al-Shabab, attacked the church, leaving at least 41 members of the church 2worshippers were also injured in the attack when the terrorists threw some explosives towards the altar.

After the attack, the then president, Late Muhammadu Buhari, ordered an immediate manhunt for the attackers, after which the DSS swung into action and arrested five persons.

The suspects were later arrested by the DSS and are currently facing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Similarly, bandits have been terrorising five local governments in the Kogi West senatorial district, sharing boundaries with Ondo State.

The LGAs include Lokoja, Kabba/Bunu, Yagba West, Yagba East and Ijumu, where killing and destruction of property have become the order of the day for months.

Policemen, vigilantes, traditional rulers and several citizens were some of the victims in many of the gunmen’s ambushes in the local government areas.

Speaking to Daily Trust anonymously, one of the sources said the intelligence agencies are aware of the fresh planned attacks already and that the DSS’ letter to the military to that effect manning the general areas has prepared them ahead.

‘Yes, security agencies are leaving no stone unturned regarding the matter’, the source said, adding that ‘ISWAP terrorists’ plans on communities in both Ondo and Kogi states are known to the security agents already.’

Another source said efforts are ongoing to dismantle the terrorists’ cells in the general areas of the two states, saying arrests would soon be made in connection with the imminent attack.

DSS’ alert

In a memo by the DSS and addressed to the Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Owena Cantonment, Akure, the secret police warned of the ‘imminent attacks’, calling for heightened surveillance and security deployment across vulnerable areas.

The security agency also called for immediate action by the army and other relevant forces to prevent the attacks, stressing that community vigilance is important and key to taming the impending attacks.

The letter, seen by Daily Trust and titled: ‘Imminent Attacks in Ondo State by Members of ISWAP,’ was signed by one H. I. Kana on behalf of the Ondo State Director of the Department of State Services.

The document listed targeted communities in Ondo State as Eriti-Akoko and Oyin-Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, as well as Owo town, headquarters of Owo Local Government Area.

The letter partly read, ‘Intelligence confirmed plans by members of Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States anytime soon.

‘It was further gathered that the group has commenced surveillance on potential soft targets in the above-mentioned locations.

‘Consequently, there is a need to scale up the level of security alertness in the various communities to forestall any untoward situation.’

Previous attacks in Kogi

Apart from the Owo attack in 2022, several other attacks have been carried out recently by gunmen suspected to be terrorists.

Specifically, on 10th September, 2025, five security operatives comprising three police officers and two vigilante members were killed at Egbe, Kogi West Area, close to Ondo.

Four other policemen were killed at a checkpoint in Abugi and Isanlu in Lokoja and Yagba East local government, respectively, on 21st September 2025 in a separate attack.

At the height of their attacks, on 15th May, 2025, the bandits abducted a traditional ruler, Obalohun of Ofoloke community, in Yagba West, Oba James Dada Ogunyanda Ilufemiloye.

In the same month, a young man, Lanlege Adewale, was kidnapped and had his hands chopped off while traveling between Egbe and Ikoro in the Yagba community.

Also, Major Joe Ajayi (rtd), who was kidnapped on May 21, 2025, at his residence in Odo-Ape in Kabba-Bunu local government area, was killed despite the payment of N10m ransom to his abductors for freedom.

Fish out terrorists’ backers, bishop tells FG, security agencies

Meanwhile, the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Owo in Ondo State, Dr Stephen Fagbemi, called on the government and security agencies to fish out those who provide different support for the attackers.

In an interview with one of our correspondents, Fagbemi admitted that tension is naturally high in the Owo axis, considering the past terror attacks in the area.

He, however, called on residents to be vigilant but not fearful.

The cleric said, ‘We are being made to be alert. We are not to be fearful, but it is for everybody to be more vigilant and take necessary precautions to be sure that we do not allow any strange elements to infiltrate into our ranks.

‘For us as a church, while we encourage our people to be vigilant, we will continue to pray and also offer our support to government agencies, security outfits, as we believe that they are also going to do their best and the Lord helping all of us, we shall be saved’.

Asked if the alert has heightened fears in Owo, considering the past attacks, Fagbemi responded, ‘Naturally, that Owo is being mentioned again will be of concern. We simply want to ask: what have we done? What’s our offence? Why is it that Owo is coming out again?

‘But surely we know that we shall overcome and God will help us and we will encourage our people to be law-abiding and be alert.’

Fagbemi urged the government and security agencies not to rest on their oars but work harder to protect the lives and property of the residents.

He also asked the government to fish out the masterminds of the terror threats.

‘Security is the primary task of the government, and we are trusting and hoping that they will not fail. We encourage them to put in their very best to ensure the lives of people are saved and they do as much as possible to fish out those who are involved in this kind of terror threat,’ he said.

Also speaking, the youth leader in Yagba East Local Government in the State, Joshua David, lamented that the security operatives lack the necessary capacity in weapons and logistics to confront invading bandits in the event of an organised or coordinated attack of the group.

David said, ‘Our security operatives can do better and clean them out of our communities if they are gifted with the necessary weapons and encouragement.

‘In the event where their morale is low, and coupled with poor logistic backup, it’s not feasible to confront such an organized attacker and get a good result. It’s just like standing on the rail of a moving train.

‘In my communities, we have lost a lot of them to bandits’ attacks, which had instilled fears into the residents for months.

Police convene high-level security meeting

Following the alert, Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, convened a high-powered security meeting and community engagement session with local security operatives, farmers and traditional leaders in the area on Tuesday.

It was learnt that the discussion during the meeting was based solely on the security threats.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Olayinka Ayanlade, the meeting, held at Ikare Akoko, was ‘aimed at consolidating existing security partnerships and fostering greater collaboration between the police and members of the public.’

According to him, the meeting was attended by traditional rulers, senior police officers, leaders of the Fulani and Igbo communities, representatives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and the Okada Riders Association, Farmers’ Association.

Others are the Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS), Vigilante and Hunters Associations, and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) led by its State Chairman, Gabriel Ariyo.

Ayanlade said the interactive session strengthened mutual trust and understanding between the police and the community, adding that attendees were urged to provide information that could aid the police operations.

‘Representatives of the farmers also assured the command of timely and accurate information to aid its operations, while traditional rulers highlighted the importance of border communities adjoining Ekiti and Kogi states in curbing cross-border threats.

‘Leaders of the Hausa-Fulani and Igbo communities, alongside other socio-economic groups, lauded the police commissioner for his fairness, inclusivity and people-oriented policing approach.

‘They reaffirmed their commitment to information sharing and joint vigilance to protect lives and property,’ the statement added.

Kogi, Ondo govts allay residents’ fear as military silent

The spokesman of 32 Artillery Brigade, Njoka Irabor, a Major, could not be reached for official comments yesterday when contacted.

Repeated phone calls to the military high command were also not responded to as the Director, Defence Media Operations, Markus Kangye, a Major-General, didn’t pick up his calls.

The senior military officer was yet to respond to both text and WhatsApp messages sent to him as when filing this report Wednesday morning.

But Ondo State governor, Lucky Ayedatiwa, and his counterpart from Kogi, allayed fears of the residents over the security alert.

In a statement signed by Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, the government confirmed the memo, saying steps have been taken to forestall break down of law and order.

The state government explained that the leaked memo formed part of routine intelligence reports regularly shared among security agencies and the government, as part of ongoing security operations, and has identified and prevented potential threats.

It noted that such intelligence reports usually contain varying levels of threat assessment and are used by security agencies to strengthen vigilance and take proactive measures.

The government assured residents that the reports are already being acted upon by relevant authorities, with adequate precautionary measures taken to ensure safety and security across the state.

The statement emphasised the need for cooperation between the government and security agencies to maintain vigilance and effectively respond to any possible threat.

It also urged residents to remain calm, alert, and report any suspicious activity to the nearest security agency, adding that the government is taking every necessary step to prevent any attack within the state.

He said, ‘Governor Aiyedatiwa remains in constant contact with security agencies and has initiated several protective measures, particularly in border communities, to ensure that Ondo State retains its reputation as one of the safest in the country.

The statement further appealed to residents to continue their normal daily activities, refrain from taking laws into their own hands, cooperate with security operatives, and provide useful information that could help prevent potential threats.

On its part, the Kogi State Government urged its residents not to panic but to remain calm and vigilant over alleged planned terrorist attacks in parts of the state and Ondo.

Kingsley Fanwo, Kogi Commissioner for Information, while giving the assurance in a statement, said that the state is in possession of the intelligence report about the attack, which he described as a ‘step toward victory’.

‘Our possession of the intelligence report is a demonstration of the proactive work of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies in protecting Kogi residents from criminal elements.

‘The report itself is evidence that our security agencies are alive to their responsibilities. We commend the DSS for their vigilance and for providing early intelligence capable of preventing such evil plans from being executed.

‘This government, hereby, assures residents that it’s working closely with the DSS, Nigerian Army, Police, and other relevant security formations to ensure that any terrorist attempt is completely foiled before it can threaten lives or property, ‘ he said.

According to him, Gov. Ahmed Ododo has made the security of lives and property in Kogi a top priority of his administration.

Fanwo said that strategic security measures had been reinforced across the state, and surveillance had been intensified, especially around border communities.

He urged residents to go about their normal businesses without fear but to remain security-conscious and report any suspicious movement or persons to the nearest security agency.

‘The government will protect the people at all costs. We will not allow criminals or terror groups to disrupt the peace and progress we have built. ‘Kogi remains one of the safest states in Nigeria, and we intend to keep it that way,’ he said.

Break the cycle of strikes

The wave of strikes and threats of industrial action by labour unions in Nigeria highlights a systemic failure in industrial relations, a lack of long-term planning for the nation’s workforce, and the erratic implementation of policy measures-particularly agreements between the government and labour unions. Amid growing concerns over unrest in tertiary institutions, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) launched a two-week warning strike, disregarding appeals to reconsider. This action stemmed from the perceived indifference of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, who failed to act on resolutions reached during a meeting in December 2024.

While ASUU’s strike aimed to compel the minister to address welfare concerns, the decision to halt academic activities was arguably excessive and costly. Alternative strategic measures might have been more effective in drawing the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s attention to unresolved aspects of the 2009 Federal Government-ASUU agreement. Instead, the disruption of the academic calendar and the forced absence of students from campuses for two weeks created avoidable tension and setbacks. It is gratifying that the university teachers have shelved the industrial action, at least in the interim.

The consequences of such industrial actions are far-reaching. The loss of productive man-hours and the psychological toll on students, parents and institutions are severe. Repeated strikes not only undermine the stability of Nigeria’s education system but also erode public confidence in the government’s ability to manage labour relations effectively. A more proactive and collaborative approach is urgently needed to prevent future disruptions and restore trust between stakeholders.

In 2025 alone, there have been as many as nine strikes and warnings of strikes. Several labour unions have had bitter experiences with the government. The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Lagos State protested illegal salary deductions. The Medical Guild, also in Lagos, embarked on a three-day warning strike over unresolved issues with the state government. Similarly, the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) threatened nationwide industrial action due to the exclusion of non-clinical staff from the proposed retirement age extension for medical personnel.

Other medical bodies also took industrial action. The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) went on a five-day warning strike in September. The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) began an indefinite strike, which was suspended on September 19, 2025.

Beyond the medical sector, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) threatened strike over several issues, including the non-implementation of palliatives meant to cushion the effects of the government’s harsh economic policies. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the FCT was on strike from March to July 2025 due to the non-payment of the new minimum wage and five months of salary arrears. The strike was suspended in July after the FCT Administration began paying the national minimum wage with devastating effect on the education of thousands of primary school pupils.

It is apparent that mutual suspicion often characterises negotiations between the government and industrial unions. In many instances, the government maintains an unhealthy silence on agreements, fails to pay salaries and allowances, withdraws circulars on agreed issues, or pays benefits selectively-leaving segments of the workforce feeling cheated. Additionally, there are often no reliable mediation or arbitration panels to resolve disputes.

These issues highlight the absence of a robust industrial relations policy in Nigeria-one that could foster harmony between employers and employees and ensure timely implementation of agreements. They also underscore how the country’s labour practices rarely align with international standards. Labour unions in many African countries do not embark on industrial actions as frequently as those in Nigeria.

Over the years, we have consistently advocated that the government must demonstrate genuine commitment to agreements reached with labour unions. One critical way to achieve this is by ensuring that the financial implications of such negotiations are adequately captured in the country’s annual budgets. All organs of government involved in the implementation of these agreements must recognise the importance of releasing funds in accordance with the terms agreed upon with the unions.

Key officials-including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, and the Accountant-General of the Federation-must be actively involved in the process. Their collaboration is essential to ensure that funds are released promptly, thereby preventing threats of strikes, warning strikes, or even full-scale industrial actions. Government representatives who negotiate with labour unions must exhibit seriousness and integrity. When officials fail to follow up on the implementation of negotiated agreements, it erodes workers’ confidence and signals a lack of concern for their welfare.

Labour unions, on their part, should not always resort to strikes as the first response to industrial disputes. We encourage them to explore alternative mechanisms such as peaceful protests, rallies, and town hall meetings. Legal avenues-including filing lawsuits against relevant government agencies and seeking court injunctions-can also compel compliance with negotiated terms. Additionally, unions can lobby the National Assembly and engage neutral third parties to facilitate dialogue and resolve disputes.

Strikes often project instability and disrupt national progress. It is imperative that both the federal government and labour unions commit to collaborative efforts aimed at ending the cycle of industrial unrest and fostering a more stable and productive labour environment.

Labour Party Kicks Over Invitation Extended To Abure By INEC

The Labour Party under the leadership of its Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, has called for the arrest of Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, former Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for allegedly colluding with Julius Abure against the interest of the party.

The case in contention is the invitation extended to Abure on Tuesday, 14th October 2025, by the INEC acting chair to attend a meeting with leaders of the eighteen (18) registered political parties.

Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Interim National Chairman, Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, in a statement said to justify the invitation of Abure, Agbamuche-Mbu cited ‘an alleged order from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Gwagwalada, purportedly directing INEC to recognise Mr. Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.’

Asogwa said however, ‘our independent and painstaking investigation has revealed that no such court order exists. While it is true that Mr. Abure filed a suit against INEC in Suit No: CV/1914/2025, before Hon. Justice Kayode Agunloye of Court 40, FCT High Court, Gwagwalada, our formal request for a Certified True Copy (CTC) of any order purportedly recognising him as Chairman was met with a categorical confirmation from the court that no such order was ever granted.

‘We therefore challenge Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu to produce the so-called court order that she relied upon to accord recognition to Julius Abure. The truth is that INEC’s acting leadership has willfully relied on a fabricated and non-existent order to justify an illegal and politically motivated act.

‘Although it would have still been null and void even if such order existed, especially in the face of the Supreme Court’s unambiguous judgment of 4th April 2025 which conclusively upheld Senator Nenadi Usman’s leadership of the Labour Party, it smacks of fraud, scant regard for our laws, meddlesomeness, and partisanship for Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu to have dragged INEC into this web of political criminal conspiracy to commit this judicial heist.’

Asogwa said this ‘shameful episode represents a new low in the history of INEC. It exposes Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu as a clear danger to Nigeria’s democracy, and as such, we call for her immediate arrest and prosecution for complicity in the criminal forgery of a court order and for acting as an accessory after the fact in a crime against the Nigerian people.

‘Accordingly, we direct our supporters nationwide to begin immediate mobilisation for a peaceful occupation of INEC Headquarters until Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu is arrested and prosecuted, and until INEC fully complies with the binding Supreme Court judgment affirming the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman.’

The party also urged the new INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan to urgently address ‘this grave injustice and purge the Commission of the elements of destabilisation led by Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu and her co-conspirators.’
