The BRICS Russian Women’s Business Alliance has announced plans to open a regional office in Nigeria.

The disclosure was made by the BRICS Women Business Alliance Russian delegation during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

The team had earlier met with the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, at the State House.

Briefing the press at the end of their two-day visit to Nigeria, BRICS Russia WBA Chairperson, Ms Anna Nesterova, said the five-member delegation is in Nigeria to express their readiness to do business in the country.

She said the team met with some private businesses in critical sectors like health and education.

She also noted that the BRICS WBA is a separate body and its programmes are purely for business.

Nesterova said: ‘This was the first meeting, so we introduced ourselves, and expressed our readiness to open the regional office in Nigeria, because we need to be smart about this new region for our business needs, and we need to process the new market.

‘So, we expressed our willingness to move forward, to bring more Russian women to Nigeria, to present our different spheres, especially technology, agriculture, healthcare, education, and labour mobility.’

Earlier, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Odumegwu-Ojukwu, expressed the willingness of both countries to strengthen bilateral ties using the platform of the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance (WBA).

She described the meeting as timely, noting that it afforded a platform for both countries to explore investment opportunities between them.

Bandits on Wednesday night abducted two serving councillors and an Imam in a daring raid at Tsauni community in Gusau, capital of Zamfara State.

The councillors, who represent Gidan Goga and Tsibiri wards in Maradun Local Government Area, were reportedly seized around 8:05 p.m. near a police outpost, shortly after performing the Maghrib prayers.

Chairman of Maradun LGA, Hon. Sanusi Gama Giwa, confirmed the incident and identified the abducted councillors as members of his council.

According to him, the victims were relaxing with others at a tea spot when the armed men struck. ‘It happened right in front of a police station where officers are usually present. The bandits even collected phones from the police officers without resistance. They didn’t harm anyone.’ he said

Giwa added that the bandits were initially in search of a specific individual from Kaura village.

‘ Upon failing to capture their target, they stumbled upon the group of men and abducted six of them.

‘However, after moving a short distance, they released three and continued on with the councillors and the Imam,’ he said

Tsauni, the scene of the abduction, is a community that has previously hosted internally displaced persons fleeing banditry from surrounding villages – raising further concerns about the vulnerability of such areas.

Police authorities have confirmed the incident.

Speaking via telephone, the Spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said operatives had been deployed to the area and a rescue operation is underway.

‘We are doing everything within our power to rescue the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice,’ DSP Abubakar said.

He urged residents to continue providing useful information that could aid in our efforts against these criminals.

As of the time of filing this report, the abductors had yet to make contact with the families of the victims or issue any demands.

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mallam Salihu Mohammed Lukman, has warned that the party is under serious threat in Kaduna State due to internal scheming ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja, Lukman accused some aspirants of plotting to hijack the party’s structure for selfish interests. He urged former governor Nasir El-Rufai, Mallam Jaafaru Sani, Alhaji Bashir Saidu, Senator Musa Bello and others to halt what he described as ‘madness.’

He said members with political ambitions were ‘restless’ and working to dominate the party at the expense of collective interest.

‘For whatever reasons, those of us who want the ADC to be an equal opportunity party are being condemned. Sadly, some of our leaders instead of providing fair leadership are taking side with strengthening aspiring candidates for 2027 elections across the state to the exclusion of others.

‘I want to use the opportunity of this independence anniversary to appeal to all of us to stop this madness of trying to take over structures of ADC and control it to the exclusion of so-called opponents.

‘If ADC is to emerge as a strong party capable of defeating the APC in Kaduna State, we must agree to work together. Anybody who is not ready to work as part of a united opposition in Kaduna State is consciously or unconsciously working for APC.

In particular, I want to appeal to Mal. Nasir El-Rufai, Mal. Jaafaru Sani and Alh. Bashir Saidu as opposition leaders in Kaduna State to please, stop encouraging the madness of aspiring candidates seeking to take over structures of ADC to the exclusion of so-called opponents,’ he said.

Gunmen have reportedly abducted two brothers from their cassava farm in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The attack, it was gathered, took place on Wednesday at the Bokungi Zambufu community in Lafiagi Emirate.

A vigilante commander, Gina Gana, confirmed the incident on Wednesday night.

He said the assailants, numbering about four, were heavily armed.

According to him, they invaded the farm, shooting sporadically before whisking the brothers away.

‘No contact has been made to demand any ransom, but we later saw the military with two suspects, but we don’t know if they were part of the bandits,’ he said.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Government has urged residents, especially in Ekiti, Ifelodun, Isin, Oke Ero, and Irepodun local government areas, to be vigilant and restrict outdoor activities as security forces intensify operations against kidnappers in border towns between Kwara and Kogi states.

The areas have come under a series of attacks lately.

‘The kidnappers are fleeing their hideouts and we don’t want law-abiding citizens to be affected,’ Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, said in a statement.

She said the government regrets any inconveniences the restrictions may cause but praised security forces for their renewed efforts to rout the criminals.

He urged them to continue until the gangs are neutralised and flushed out of the forests.

Governors have called on Nigerians to continue to uphold unity, peaceful coexistence, and resilience as the country marks its 65th Independence Anniversary.

In his Independence Day address on Wednesday, Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, called on Nigerians to strengthen unity. He said unity remains the foundation of peace and prosperity, urging Nigerians across divides of faith, ethnicity, and background to work hand-in-hand in building the country envisioned by its founding fathers.

‘Their legacy was not forged in ease, but in unity, faith, and an unwavering belief in the greatness of Nigeria. It is this same legacy that should inspire us to continue building a nation where peace, justice, and opportunity prevail,’ he noted.

The governor, who said the nation’s greatest strength has always been its collective resolve to overcome adversity, described Nigeria at 65 as a story of hope, endurance, and togetherness, despite decades of political, social, and economic challenges.

Highlighting Kaduna’s contributions to national development, the governor outlined achievements in infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare, and peacebuilding, describing them as proof of what collective determination can deliver.

On infrastructure, he disclosed that 85 urban and rural road projects, spanning 785 kilometres, had been launched, with nearly half completed. According to him, the roads are easing trade, reducing travel time, and improving access to markets for farmers and entrepreneurs.

Governor Sani said education reforms had returned over 10,728 children to school under the Reaching Out-of-School Children Project, while 535 schools previously shut due to insecurity had been reopened. In agriculture, he said over 500,000 hectares of abandoned farmland had been reclaimed, and major markets in Birnin Gwari and Giwa had been reopened, boosting rural commerce and food security. In health, 255 Primary Health Care Centres had been upgraded across the state.

He emphasised that peace remains the bedrock of Kaduna’s progress, pointing to his administration’s investments in community policing, reconciliation, and dialogue.

Similarly, Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on Wednesday described unity and peaceful coexistence as the bedrock of development and prosperity. In a goodwill message to mark the 29th anniversary of Gombe State alongside Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, the governor noted that while challenges remain, Gombe has recorded remarkable achievements across critical sectors under his administration.

Reflecting on the state’s journey since its creation in 1996, Governor Yahaya paid glowing tribute to past leaders who laid the foundation for its growth. He pointed out milestones in education, healthcare, security, infrastructure, agriculture, industrialization, environmental sustainability, public service reforms, ease of doing business, youth and women empowerment, and regional water projects.

According to him, Gombe has in recent years bolstered healthcare and education, expanded infrastructure with the completion of rural and township roads, addressed long-standing environmental issues, and opened new economic frontiers through agro-livestock, agribusiness, and industrialization.

Governor Yahaya disclosed that his administration has constructed over 900 kilometers of roads across all local government areas, most of them adorned with solar streetlights, expanded healthcare facilities, and improved access to education through the construction of new classrooms and recruitment of teachers. He also revealed that over the past six years, his administration has disbursed over N25 billion in gratuities to state and local government retirees across the 11 LGAs, successfully clearing liabilities left by previous administrations, with some dating back to 2012.

Looking ahead, Governor Yahaya pledged to intensify efforts in empowering youth, supporting farmers, and improving the quality of life for families across the state. He urged citizens to remain patient and united amid ongoing economic reforms, assuring that these measures would ultimately yield a stronger, more resilient, and prosperous future.

Governor Yahaya, who is also the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF), encouraged the people of Gombe and Nigerians at large to celebrate with gratitude for the progress made while renewing their commitment to building a future anchored on unity, prosperity, and opportunity for all.

Peacebuilding, recovery efforts succeeding – Zulum

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, who congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other Nigerians on the 65th Independence Day Celebration, acknowledged the challenges the country has faced over the past 65 years but emphasised that Nigeria has consistently emerged stronger. The governor called for continued unity, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence amongst its citizens.

He commended President Tinubu for his leadership and continued support to the armed forces and other security agencies involved in counter-insurgency operations in the North East, particularly in Borno State. Zulum, in a statement he personally signed, also expressed commitment to providing peace and development to Borno.

He said, ‘Our administration’s peacebuilding and recovery efforts are greatly succeeding. The integrated policies, designed to address the root causes of insurgency, build community resilience, and promote reconciliation, have been fruitful.’

Peace is foundation of progress – Bauchi Gov

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed also urged Nigerians to remain united and committed to the ideals of peace, democracy, and nation-building during the 65th Independence Anniversary. He implored them to continue to live harmoniously with one another and help make the State and country great.

In his goodwill message, the governor described independence as a milestone that ended colonial domination, granting Nigeria self-determination, political freedom, and opportunities for socio-economic and democratic growth. The governor highlighted his administration’s multi-sectoral agenda on infrastructure, security, and empowerment, disclosing plans for the Bauchi State Investment Summit in October to attract investors and unlock economic potentials. Mohammed, who described peace as the foundation of progress, pledged stronger security partnerships.

In his message, Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State called for a renewed commitment towards ending banditry and other forms of criminality hindering the nation’s march to greatness. The governor, in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, described insecurity as one of the major setbacks to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development. He stressed the need for collective efforts to end the menace.

‘Governments at all levels, traditional rulers, religious leaders, as well as community leaders must work together if we are to end the activities of bandits in our rural areas,’ he said.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, while addressing youth groups at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi, on Wednesday, said his administration’s priority is to strengthen youth empowerment and development through education, in recognition of their position in the state’s stability.

He highlighted his efforts by saying, ‘That’s why I lifted the embargo on employment, and employed more than 4,000 workers into the Kebbi civil service.’ He added that his administration had employed 2,000 new teachers, while professionals in the health sector, including medical doctors, nurses, and health technologists numbering 2,148, in addition to more than 500 casual workers, were absorbed as permanent and pensionable appointment.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said that genuine collaboration between government and citizens is crucial to achieving the breakthrough Nigerians desire. Speaking at the 65th Independence Day celebration held at Lagos House, Marina, Sanwo-Olu noted that the anniversary theme, ‘Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,’ underscores the need for unity and collective effort.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, during a statewide broadcast to commemorate the 29th anniversary of Ekiti State and the 65th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence, appealed to political parties, political leaders, and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully ahead of the parties’ primary elections later this year and the main governorship election in June next year.

Relatedly, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last election, Peter Obi, called on Nigerians not to despair, in spite of the prevailing socio-economic challenges in the country. Addressing journalists on the Independence Anniversary in Abuja on Wednesday, Obi said at independence, the founding fathers fought with confidence, passion, and determination to build a prosperous Nigeria.

He, however, said tragic failures of leadership derailed this vision.

He charged Nigerians to keep hope alive, saying, ‘With the right leadership, we can defeat terrorism, restore security, and guarantee Nigerians safe communities where enterprise and social life can thrive.’ He also called on political leaders to reflect on the crises confronting the nation and recognise this as a moment to transcend personal interests.

Also, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, urged Nigerians to rise above divisive politics and narrow interests, stressing that the nation’s survival and progress depend on unity and patriotism.

Dogara, in a statement to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, described the milestone as ‘a victory of courage over fear, of hope over despair, and of resilience over adversity.’

The former Speaker commended President Tinubu for what he called ‘bold and transformative reforms,’ including the removal of fuel subsidy, efforts to stabilise the Naira, and renewed focus on investment and enterprise. According to him, the policies, though painful in the short term, are laying the foundation for lasting economic recovery.

The resurgence of armed secessionist violence, the rise of politically sponsored cult groups, and institutional weaknesses collectively pose serious threats to the credibility, inclusiveness, and safety of the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State, a new report has warned.

The Security Threat Assessment report, presented by the Director of Programmes at CLEEN Foundation, Dr. Salaudeen Hashim, ahead of the November 8, 2025, governorship poll, revealed that since 2022, more than 200 lives have been lost to politically or ideologically motivated violence in Anambra State, with Ihiala Local Government Area accounting for over 46 confirmed deaths.

‘While certain LGAs remain relatively stable, the cumulative effect of violence in key zones like Ihiala, Ogbaru and Orumba could erode public confidence in the electoral process and discourage participation,’ the report said.

It further cautioned that without deliberate interventions to curb voter suppression, reform security deployment strategies, and restore trust in community institutions, the risk of election-day violence and post-election grievances remains high.

Key findings highlighted in the report include heightened insecurity in specific LGAs, politicisation of cult groups and youth gangs, weak security infrastructure and institutional gaps, voter suppression through fear, misinformation, and mobility constraints, as well as community fragmentation and manipulation of traditional institutions.

To address these threats, the report recommended targeted risk mapping and early warning mechanisms in high-risk LGAs like Ihiala, Ogbaru, and Orumba North through regular, data-driven threat assessments and locally driven early warning systems.

It urged the involvement of community stakeholders, INEC, traditional leaders, town union presidents, peacebuilding structures, security agencies, CSOs, and the media to ensure a timely response to potential security threats and prevent escalation before, during, and after the election.

The report further called on security agencies to prioritise the identification, disarmament, and prosecution of cult groups and their political sponsors, particularly in flashpoints like Nnewi and Onitsha. It also stressed the need to rebuild and strengthen police stations and INEC offices in previously attacked or underserved areas such as Anambra East, Ogbaru, and Idemili South to ensure adequate coverage across all LGAs.

Also, it recommended intensifying voter education and public sensitisation campaigns in fear-stricken areas like Anambra West and Ihiala to counter voter suppression, while urging credible CSOs and investigative journalists to fact-check and counter misinformation before, during, and after the elections to promote peace and calm.

In his opening remarks, Acting Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Peter Maduoma, expressed optimism that the Anambra election would be counted among Nigeria’s successful staggered polls. He urged citizens to turn out en masse and exercise their right to vote.

The massive explosion that recently rocked the premises of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) in Kaduna was preventable, and therefore, unacceptable. The blast which occurred on Saturday, September 20, 2025, reportedly detonated during the controlled disposal of expired gunpowder materials at the factory’s ordnance disposal pit in Kurmin Gwari.

The incidence, which left one person dead and several others injured including DICON’s civilian workers shook the surrounding buildings and sent residents scampering for safety.

An official statement later issued by DICON stated that the explosion occurred while specialists were disposing of expired ordnance materials stored at the factory. The affected items included Ammonia Nitrates, Primer Caps, Propellants, and other raw materials that had long exceeded their shelf life. A statement signed by the corporation’s Public Relations Officer, Maria Sambo, explained that DICON had since July 2025 began disposing of the expired items; adding that the unfortunate accident occurred while experts were concluding the destruction of the remaining stock.

Meanwhile, the military high command has ordered an immediate investigation into the explosion. The Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, affirmed in a statement that the Defence Headquarters deeply regrets the ordnance explosion. Also, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa extended condolences to the families and friends of the deceased; pledging to conduct a thorough investigation to prevent future incidents.

While this is the second incident in the country this year alone, it is a repeat of history at DICON. Earlier this year, residents of Maiduguri and its environs were at about 11.35pm on Wednesday April 30, 2025 rattled when several bomb explosions rang through the city from the Giwa Military Barracks’ armoury. The deafening explosions, which reportedly lasted for more than two hours, were followed by large balls of flames in the direction of the Giwa Barracks.

Officials attributed the Giwa Barracks’ explosions to a fire outbreak around the armoury section of the barracks. Speaking through Reuben Kovangiya, the Theatre Command Operation, HADIN KAI, said high temperatures in Maiduguri might have triggered the explosion of some ammunitions; a claim later corroborated by authorities of the Borno State Fire Service.

It would also be recalled that on Tuesday November 3, 2009, explosions which DICON authorities at that time described as a minor industrial accident rocked DICON factory when the General Manager was on an inspection tour of the factory. The six victims affected in the incident were DICON staff members working in the capping section of the factory.

The armoury detonations of Sunday, January 27, 2002 that hit the Ikeja military cantonment is another gory experience Nigerians would forever hate to remember. The explosion of ‘high calibre bombs’ believed to have been caused by a fire that started from a nearby street market and thereafter spread to the armoury terribly affected areas up to 50 kilometres away from the cantonment; leaving over 1,000 people dead, hundreds injured, and about 20,000 displaced from the immediate community. It also caused severe damage to a number of buildings in and around Ikeja.

Given the nature of previous incidents in which ordnance explosions were ascribed to expired substances and weather, repeated occurrences clearly point to sheer negligence on the part of military authorities. Their failure to learn from past incidents is also professionally indicting. DICON’s mandates include the operation, maintenance and control of ordnance factories for the manufacture, storage and disposal of weapons and ancillary stores and materials intended for or capable of being used by the armed forces.

Within the context of their mandate, DICON and heads of armoury sections in military barracks lack any excuses for not adhering to safety protocols in ordnance storage or disposal measures. Were storage facilities closely monitored in Giwa barracks; and were expiring munitions in DICON not left in stock until they became moribund, the two separate explosions would have been averted.

Similarly, had military authorities relocated DICON out of Kurmi Gwari neighbourhood in Kaduna and the armoury out of Ikeja ever since physical development caught up with the two sites that were considered outskirts in the past, the loss of lives and property witnessed in the Ikeja blasts and the recent DICON explosions would both have been forestalled.

We urge the CDS not to allow the report of the probe into the last DICON explosions go the way of previous investigations. It should be made public and persons responsible for operational failures sanctioned appropriately.

Daily Trust also calls on the Nigerian military to demonstrate value for human life by institutionalising operational safety in the warehousing and discarding of weapons and ammunitions.

Relocating weapons’ storage facilities from densely populated areas of cities would further prevent recurrence of ordnance explosions with its associated damages. DICON’s recent incident should be the last to be heard in the country. Nigeria has had enough of ordnance detonations.

Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has promised to storm the streets and campaign for Dr Moses Paul, African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the coming council election.

Obi spoke at the Merit House, Abuja, during a special Independent program organised by Dr Moses Paul and his councillorship candidates to sensitise AMAC residents ahead of the official flag off of their campaign.

The former Anambra State Governor said he supports Paul ‘s candidacy because he knows he would not disappoint the people, if elected to lead AMAC.

The Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT is scheduled for February 2026.

In his remarks at the occasion, Dr Moses Paul declared that AMAC has failed the people and outlined a bold vision to restore dignity, prosperity, and service to the people of the area.

Speaking under the banner of ‘We Don’t Tire!’, Paul said Nigerians were weary of unfulfilled promises, neglect, and leaders who abandon the people once in power.

‘The bitter truth must be told: AMAC has failed,’ Paul stated. ‘Our markets are trapped in endless litigations, waste management has collapsed, schools were abandoned for months, our health centres are dead, insecurity is everywhere, businesses are strangled by multiple taxation, and infrastructure is practically non-existent. This is not governance. This is abandonment.’

Paul, however, emphasised that his campaign is not about lamentation but about building a new AMAC and pledged to restore dignity, prosperity, and service to governance in the Area Council.

Suspected hoodlums have reportedly stabbed a commercial cyclist identified as Yahuza to death and dumped his corpse at a river bank in Bako village, Kwali Area Council of the FCT, before escaping with his motorcycle.

A resident of Bako village, Yasmin Abdullahi, said the incident happened on Saturday around 9:43 pm.

The cyclist had picked up two young men from Dagiri, who asked to be taken to the Bako forest area.

Abdullahi said the suspects lured the cyclist by offering him a sum of N4,000 and claiming they were security guards protecting a government building near the forest.

The cyclist’s corpse was discovered by vigilantes who had gone to the forest to dislodge hoodlums who frequently use the location to smoke Indian hemp (cannabis).

‘And you know there is this big bush which links from Gwagwalada to Bako forest where most of these youngsters including hoodlums always go to smoke hemp,’ Abdullahi explained.

He added, ‘So, it was when the vigilantes went to the forest in order to dislodge people that always hang around the forest when the cyclist’s corpse was found close to the river.’

Abdullahi added that the vigilantes alerted security operatives who visited the scene and recovered the body.

The cyclist was later identified as a resident of Unguwar Dodo in Gwagwalada, and his colleagues came to evacuate the corpse to the morgue at Kwali hospital.

A member of the vigilante group, Dantani Ismaila, also confirmed the incident, stating that the hoodlums escaped with the deceased’s motorcycle after stabbing him.

A police source at the Kwali division, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident, saying the police are investigating the matter.

He also lamented the activities of hoodlums who go to the forest to smoke cannabis, adding that the police have consistently raided the place and made arrests.

Nigeria’s youth football teams are preparing for contrasting but equally crucial battles on the world stage, with the Flying Eagles eyeing redemption at the ongoing FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, while the Flamingos head to Morocco brimming with confidence for the 2025 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

Last week, they brushed aside Abuja All-Stars 3-0, with Praise Agba, Olamide Olanrewaju, and Zainab Raji all on target. Earlier, they battled the elements in a rain-hit clash with Josiah Academy, securing a 2-0 victory courtesy of a Chisom Nwachukwu brace. Other emphatic wins included a 5-0 triumph over Nazareth Angels, with Queen Joseph netting twice, and another 5-0 rout of Horvel Prime, where Joseph bagged a rapid hat-trick.

Drawn in Group D alongside Canada, France, and Samoa, the Flamingos will depart Nigeria on October 8 for the tournament, which runs from October 17 to November 8, 2025. Their impressive build-up has sparked optimism that they can improve on past achievements and challenge for the ultimate prize.
