Ogun govt suspends school principals over illegal fees

The Ogun State Government, on Tuesday, suspended the principals of Ilugun High School, both Junior and Senior schools, Mrs. Olukoga Adeyemi and Mrs. Ladipo Temitope, over illegal fees, which led to students’ protests.

Students of the school were seen in a video destroying school property.

Addressing newsmen, the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, said the Ministry is conducting a preliminary investigation over the death of a yet-to-be-identified person whose death might have sparked the protest.

He explained that the deceased might have been illegally enrolled into the school, saying he was identified by three different names Babalola Ayornide, Salako Jimoh, and Afolabi Babalola.

The Commissioner stated that the Principal of the Junior School, Olukoga, had been involved in collecting illegal fees.

‘We have all become aware of the incident that took place at Ilugun High School (Junior), Elega. I stand before you this afternoon to confirm that the incident did happen in the school.

‘First, let me, on behalf of the State Government, express condolences to the parents and family of the deceased.

‘Our preliminary investigations have revealed a twist. The young man who lost his life could not be confirmed as a student of the school.

‘He was identified by three different names Babalola Ayornide, Salako Jimoh, and Afolabi Babalola. Yet, none of these names appear in our official state education database, the OGSERA platform, which authenticates all school enrolments. This points to the likelihood of an illegal enrolment.

‘In addition, we also discovered that the Principal of Ilugun High School (Junior) had been involved in the collection of illegal fees. In light of these findings, government has decided to place both the Junior and Senior Principals of Ilugun High School on suspension while we conduct an investigation into the causes of this incident.

‘Also, in order to keep abreast of happenings in schools, a scheme called Whistle Blowers has been established by the government through the Teaching Service Commission to control illegalities and wrongdoings.

‘Let me assure the people of Ogun State that the administration of His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, remains committed to provide free education for every school-age child in this State, irrespective of where they live, their gender, economic status, religious belief, or political affiliation,’ he said.

Nigeria to host over 1,000 young African leaders at Abuja creative conference

The Federal Government has said that arrangements have been concluded by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development for the hosting of no fewer than 1,000 young leaders and delegates from across Africa and the diaspora in Abuja, Nigeria.

According to the organisers, the young leaders are to be hosted at the Youth Creative Conference (YCC) 2025, scheduled for October 22-23, 2025 at the ECOWAS Headquarters, Abuja.

Organised in partnership with the African Union (AU) and the YCC committee, the landmark conference would bring together over 1,000 young leaders and delegates from across Africa and the diaspora.

The event would serve as a platform for dialogue, innovation, and collaboration to strengthen peacebuilding efforts and advance sustainable development across the continent.

The conference with the theme: ‘Silencing the Guns: Pathway for Peacebuilding in Africa’, underscores the central role of youth in driving peace, innovation, good governance, and regional integration.

Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, emphasised the strategic significance of the conference, highlighting its alignment with the African Union Agenda 2063, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, and Nigeria’s foreign policy pillars of the Four DAs – Democracy, Diaspora, Development, and Diplomacy.

‘With 70% of Nigeria’s population made up of young people, we recognise their potential as peacebuilders, innovators, and architects of Africa’s future. This conference provides a vital platform for youth-led dialogue, creative exchange, and inclusive development,’ the Minister stated.

Director, Information and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Omolara Esan, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, said the conference aims to empower African youth to champion peacebuilding and sustainable development, promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and good governance among young people, as well as strengthen regional and international partnerships for youth-led development and peace.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to peace and regional solidarity, the Minister noted the nation’s active contributions to peacekeeping and mediation efforts in Libya, Syria, and The Gambia, as well as its leadership in driving initiatives on security, governance reforms, climate action, digital transformation, and inclusive education within Africa.

Speaking on the growing impact of the Youth Creativity for Change (YCC) Initiative, Convener Blaize-Kizito Ndukwe lauded its rapid continental recognition since its launch just four months ago.

He explained that the initiative leverages youth creativity as a powerful tool for peace, employing innovative, non-violent approaches that reflect Africa’s diversity.

The African Union, through the Silencing the Guns flagship initiative, also reaffirmed its support. Mr. Ernest Nya Dolo, Coordinator of the AU’s Silencing the Guns Unit, remarked:

‘Youth are not just the future, they are the present. By partnering with young people across the continent, we are laying the foundation for sustainable peace and inclusive development.’

The Silencing the Guns initiative operates through a Master Roadmap of Practical Steps, placing youth engagement at the core of efforts to build a conflict-free Africa, in collaboration with regional economic communities (RECs), governments, civil society organisations, youth networks, and traditional leaders.

The Federal Ministry of Youth Development, alongside its partners, have called for sustained collaboration to empower African youth as agents of peace, unity, and prosperity.

Wike mourns late Arise TV anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, assures justice

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Arise News anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, describing the incident as tragic and painful.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike commiserated with the management and staff of Arise News, as well as the family and friends of the deceased.

He assured that security agencies will conduct a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding Somtochukwu’s death and ensure justice is served.

‘I feel pained that such a wonderful soul could be cut down in its prime. It is sad,’ the minister said.

According to the Mandate Secretary on Health, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Dr Dolapo Fasawe, Somtochukwu was brought dead to Maitama General Hospital at about 4:30 a.m. on Monday. A preliminary medical report, she added, would be submitted to the police to aid investigations.

Wike noted that the late journalist’s passing was not just a loss to Arise News but also to the Nigerian media and the nation at large.

‘At this period, we will continue to pray for God’s comfort for the management and staff of Arise News, especially the Chairman, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, and the family and friends left behind. May God, in His infinite mercies, accept her soul and grant her loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,’ he added.

VIDEO: How Somtochukwu Maduagwu died – Arise TV correspondent

Arise TV correspondent, Ojy Okpe, has spoken out about the circumstances surrounding the death of her colleague, Somtochukwu Maduagwu.

Okpe shared this during The Morning Show on Tuesday, where she recalled what happened to the late anchor.

She said, ‘Like she stated, Nigeria happened to her. I reached out to her correspondent in Abuja, who detailed the circumstances surrounding her death. She jumped from her home when she heard that 14 armed robbers had come to her home. She didn’t die on the spot. She went to the hospital, and she was rejected.’

Tribune Online had earlier reported that the 29-year-old journalist lost her life during an armed robbery at her Katampe residence in Abuja in the early hours of Monday, September 29.

In a statement on its website on Monday, ARISE described Sommie, who was born on December 26, 1995, as a broadcaster who had become a trusted face to viewers nationwide.

The statement read, ‘It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter, and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police.’

This youth-led Initiative is returning students to classrooms through free school sandals in Kwara

For her, staying back at home is more honourable than going to school in torn sandals. Halimat’s daily problems stem from mockery, intimidation from peers and distance she had to bear to school in her worn-out sandal, and this disparages her enthusiasm for learning.

‘I am always sad and shy because of the condition of my shoe, and I decide to be at home most of the time rather than going to school,’ Halimat explained.

The likes of Halimat and other students with similar tales continue to quench the flame of education in Nigeria, making education a hard nut, difficult for vulnerable children to crack.

However, Halimat is blameless for her fate, her parents are not the villains in her story either. Abject poverty and economic hardship hinder many parents’ desires to keep their children in school. This situation outlines one of the numerous factors triggering Nigeria’s unenviable status as the country with the highest number of out-of-school children in the world.

It is estimated that the number of out-of-school children keeps increasing due to poverty and economic hardship. Globally, this puts Nigeria as the country with the highest number of children deprived of education, only behind India and Pakistan.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) 2020 Model on out-of-school children published in 2020, states that almost 20 million Nigerian children are out-of-school.

Unarguably, the cost of school sandals in low-income nations is one of the dominant obstacles to educational opportunities for poor and vulnerable students. Yet very few people or government policy often scrutinise this cost through a critical lens.

However, Halimat’s joy knew no bounds, her frail hope was renewed after an initiative visited her school to distribute school sandals which increased her enthusiasm for learning.

‘I am very happy to go to school, now that I have school sandals and feel confident to play around with my colleagues,’ she told this reporter, beaming with joy.

An Initiative’s Response

In Nigeria, a significant number of students including those in government schools attend school without proper footwears. While this is often linked to poverty, displacement, and a lack of resources, particularly in underserved communities, an initiative has emerged and changing the narrative.

In a bid to promote dignity, boost school attendance and empower children of the vulnerable population, Sandal Initiative Project (SIP), a youth-led initiative in Kwara State focuses on distributing pairs of school sandals to students with torn sandals, or none at all.

Born out of the needs to abridge the blunt reality of vulnerable students in public schools across the three senatorial districts in the state, Sandal Initiative Project partners with the Association of shoe manufacturers in the state to address part of the challenges facing the educational system in the country through provision of free sandal, thereby drawing students back to classroom.

Driven by enthusiasm and pertinent role of sandal, Mr Kale Ibrahim Jimoh, the founder of Sandal Initiative Project, who doubles as producer of the school sandal, revealed that footwear plays a crucial role in uplifting children’s potentiality to learn.

He said, ‘As someone who attended public schools, you will understand that proper footwear is more than just a basic necessity, it’s a game-changer for underprivileged kids. It levels the playing field, boosts confidence and unlock their full potential.’

He said the initiative is rendering service for free, emphasising that his skill as shoe producer motivated him more into the task. ‘It is a free collaboration, I am into leather work, so I started inviting some well-meaning youths and we have been doing it wonderfully together till date.’

During one of the outreach, Mrs Ekundayo Ayobami Comfort, a teacher at Isare Opin school in Kwara State, praised the visionary drive behind the initiative and the positive impact it had on their students.

‘The Sandal Initiative Project has made a significant impact on our students’ education, we have seen improved punctuality. It has restored self-esteem, and reduced truancy. We are grateful for the support and pray God will continue to enlarge them,’ she prayed.

How the Response Works

In order to reach a wide range of students, SIP networks with a group of organisations and dignitaries in the state in providing children’s footwear at school. Since its inception in 2020, ‘Sandal Initiative Project’ (SIP) has provided pairs of school sandals to more than 2,000 students in public schools.

The objective of SIP is to reduce the mala-adaptive behaviors among the pupils and put a smile on students’ faces. The initiative serves as an eye opener to the grim reality and challenges students face as a result of non-conforming school sandals.

Mr Kale said, ‘It is saddening and alarming to see high numbers of students in public school going to school without acceptable sandals or with no sandals at all.’

He further assured of their initiative’s resolve to give their best. ‘While we may not be able to reach every child at a go, but, we believe in reaching out to as many children as possible,’ he declared.

More Pairs to School Sandals

Kwara State First Lady, Professor Olufolake Abdulrazaq, who doubles as the Chairperson of the Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum, in one of the SIP outreach distributions which she sponsored, asserted the right of every child to access quality and affordable education.

‘Children’s footprints have a significant impact on society as those prints convey them towards a shining future,’ she said, while commending the positive impact and pledging her support for the initiative.

According to her, the initiative is aimed at ensuring comfort for school children where they can joyfully walk to their classrooms, ready to learn and excel irrespective of their backgrounds.

Speaking with this reporter, Mrs Ibrahim Saadat Maimasa, who is a teacher at Halimat’s Dada LGEA primary school, expressed her admiration for the initiative.

Saadat described the demeaning condition of children without school sandals as a threat to their health and self confidence.

‘We were always worried about the way some of our students used to walk barefoot to school though we do send them back home. Some of these children used to get diseases due to walking barefooted to school and this also deterred them from mixing with their other colleagues in school,’ she added.

She expressed her belief that the vision of Sandal Initiative Project to return out-of-school is achievable, adding that, ‘Now they are complete as students because their uniforms are good already with proper school sandals.’

The Initiative’s Challenges

Despite the successes recorded in less than five years, the SIP is without a challenge as an initiative.

Mr Shafihi Abdulrasheed Oladimeji, director of media and publicity for project SIP, explained that the initiative faces challenges in the course of providing sandals for vulnerable children, especially funding and distribution of sandals.

As a humanitarian initiative, most of its services come from donations from members of communities and dignitaries. However, the initiative believes funding is still a major challenge preventing the initiative from its full exhibition.

‘Our main challenge is funding. Though, members who identified with this initiative contribute their quota in every edition. We also receive support from philanthropists within the state. Those who believe in giving back to society,’ he explained.

As the initiative reaches its peak capacity with rendering its service, SIP demands surveillance from people and members to extend their services. ‘We approached potential sponsors for our production numbers to be increased, thereby benefiting more vulnerable students.

‘Sadly, few people turned up. Hence, financial constraints are one of the challenges we faced. But we are never deterred, we always keep the ball rolling because we could see the joy on the faces of beneficiaries,’ he added.

FG launches pound 175m climate resilience project

The Federal Government on Tuesday officially launched the European Investment Bank (EIB) Assisted Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB), designed to support the country in erosion control, flood management, and watershed restoration.

Minister of Environment and Chairman Steering Committee of NEWMAP-EIB, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, inaugurated the project in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s climate resilience project efforts.

He announced that the European Investment Bank approved a facility of pound 175 million for the project that would be implemented over a period of five (5) years across twenty-three (23) states, namely: Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau, and Sokoto.

The Minister revealed that the Federal Government had released ?750 million as the first tranche of counterpart funding to the Federal Project Management Unit.

He explained that this was to enable preparatory activities such as office setup, equipment, and other operations necessary for the project’s take-off.

He added that the participating states have shown commitment by also providing counterpart funds to their State Project Implementing Units, further ensuring the initiative’s success and sustainability of the climate resilience project.

He expressed delight that the Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled all the outlined conditions precedent for the implementation of the project.

‘Consequently, the European Investment Bank (EIB) Assisted Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB) is now disbursement-effective,’ he said.

The Minister recalled that in 2010, the Federal Government, with support from the World Bank, launched the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP-IDA) to address soil degradation, food insecurity, and land remediation under the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

According to him, the multi-sectoral NEWMAP-IDA project stabilized gully erosion sites, improved livelihoods, and strengthened institutions, noting that it commenced in 2013 with seven (7) states and later expanded to 23 states. The project closed in June 2022.

‘In 2020, the Federal Government secured additional financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to expand the scope of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).

‘The EIB approved a facility of pound 175 million aimed at building upon and deepening the achievements recorded under NEWMAP-IDA, using the Strategic Watershed Management approach,’ Lawal stated.

He added that the project became technically effective in 2023 and now disbursement-effective in 2025.

He underscored the importance of effective implementation of the project in tackling flooding, saying Nigeria, like many nations, faces worsening climate disasters. This underscores the need for a robust climate resilience project.

‘Gully erosion and annual flooding continue to cause havoc and loss of lives, destruction of property as well as severe environmental degradation, particularly across rural communities, urban centres, and farmlands,’ he stated.

Lawal, however, noted the success of the project would largely depend on the commitments from state governments, urging State Governors to increase their counterpart fund contributions just as the Federal Government is also processing another tranche of disbursement.

He thanked the European Investment Bank for providing Nigeria with a vital lifeline for erosion control, flood management, and watershed restoration, integral aspects of the climate resilience project.

He also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu whose Renewed Hope Agenda prioritizes climate-smart resilient cities.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mahmud Adam Kambari, said the partnership reflects the kind of transformative collaboration the world needs, one that prioritizes people, planet, and prosperity.

National Project Coordinator, NEWMAP-EIB, Engr. Anda Ayuba Yalaks, while presenting an overview of the project noted that The NEWMAP-EIB initiative is a strategic extension of the longstanding efforts to address land degradation, strengthen institutional capacity, and empower communities to adapt to the changing climate through the climate resilience project.

He disclosed that like its predecessor, the NEWMAP-EIB is overseen by the Federal Steering Committee, chaired by the Minister of Environment and comprising members from various MDAs. At the Technical Committee level, it is chaired by the Permanent Secretary.

Yalaks added that the project is driven by a Federal Project Management Unit under the coordination of a National Project Coordinator and that this institutional arrangement is being replicated at the state level.

According to him, the NEWMAP-EIB have been restructured into two key components: Erosion and Watershed Management Infrastructure Investment and Project Management.

Healthcare delivery: Resident doctors laud FMC Gusau’s MD

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has lauded the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gusau, Zamfara State, Dr. Bello Alhaji Mohammed, for his contributions to quality healthcare delivery.

In a press statement issued on Monday evening, FMC Gusau’s Public Relations Officer, Nazir A. Tukur (PhD), announced that Dr. Bello was honoured with an Award of Excellence and Outstanding Performance by NARD.

The statement noted that the award was presented at the Association’s 45th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Katsinan Dikko 2025, held in Katsina.

Dr. Bello, who assumed office in 2019, was recognised for his outstanding leadership, commitment to staff welfare, and contributions to improving healthcare delivery in Zamfara State and beyond. NARD described him as a leader who has raised the standard of care while inspiring younger generations of doctors.

According to the statement, under Dr. Bello’s leadership, FMC Gusau has witnessed significant improvements in infrastructure and service delivery. Completed projects include a 100-bed Mother and Baby Care Unit, a Paediatric Surgical Ward, House Officers’ Quarters (Phases I and II), and a Molecular Laboratory.

New departments such as Health Information Management, Community Medicine, Psychiatry, and a modern Works Unit have also been established to expand the hospital’s services.

Ongoing projects include the construction of a new Administrative Block, an expansive Emergency and Trauma Unit, the rehabilitation of the Amenity Ward, a befitting Isolation Centre, and Interns and NYSC Officers’ Quarters, supported by the Zamfara State Government.

Stakeholders described these initiatives as proof that Dr. Bello’s vision for FMC Gusau goes beyond short-term results, aiming instead at long-term sustainability.

The NARD FMC Gusau chapter commended him, saying his impact extends ‘far beyond the walls of our institution, touching lives, building systems, mentoring generations, and championing initiatives that uplift communities and strengthen our health system.’

Similarly, the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), FMC Gusau chapter, praised Dr. Bello’s leadership and humanitarian gestures. The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Sokoto, alongside senior members of NARD, also hailed him as a visionary whose stewardship has turned challenges into opportunities.

Strike continues as FG’s meeting with PENGASSAN, Dangote ends in deadlock

After over nine hours of intense negotiations, the high-level conciliation meeting between the Federal Government, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), and the Dangote Group ended in a deadlock late last night, leaving the fate of over 800 sacked workers hanging in the balance and the ongoing nationwide industrial action unresolved.

The meeting, convened by the Federal Government to avert further disruption to Nigeria’s energy sector, was attended by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi; PENGASSAN delegates led by its President, Comrade Festus Osifo; and top representatives of the Dangote Group.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Comrade Osifo expressed deep disappointment over the failure to reach an agreement, stressing that the union’s position remained firm on the immediate reinstatement of the 800 workers dismissed by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

‘We have been here for nine hours trying to find a solution. We’ve had numerous deliberations, even breaking into smaller teams to explore all possible resolutions, but unfortunately, there is no solution tonight,’ Osifo lamented.

According to him, the mass sack has placed the affected workers and their families in a dire situation.

‘All we want is justice for the over 800 people who were sacked. These people are fathers and mothers, and their careers are now at stake. When you terminate people the way they have been terminated, it becomes extremely difficult for them to find jobs anywhere,’ he explained.

Osifo added that some of those dismissed were trainees who had been accused of sabotage, a stigma he said could permanently ruin their careers in the oil and gas industry.

‘If they go home like this, there is no other company in Nigeria that will employ them because they have been labeled saboteurs. These are careers that would be destroyed if a proper remedy is not put in place,’ he stated.

Reiterating the union’s stance, the PENGASSAN leader declared that the strike continues until the workers are reinstated.

‘Our position has been very clear: if you reinstate these people tonight, we will call off our action tonight. But, unfortunately, that reinstatement did not happen, and we were not able to reach a conclusion. So they have asked us to come back again by 2 p.m. today. We pray that God touches the heart of the capitalists, the hearts of the oppressors, to call our people back to work. Until then, the strike continues,’ Osifo vowed.

Confirming the union’s claims, Osifo stressed that Dangote Group had admitted to dismissing the workers, pointing to official termination letters already circulating in the media.

‘Dangote Group agreed that they dismissed 800 people, and the reason was stated in the letters. It cannot be falsehood because the letters are already in the media. What they stated is already public, and it was signed in a communication they released last Thursday,’ he said.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, who presided over the reconciliation session, acknowledged that the meeting had made progress but emphasized that the reinstatement of the sacked workers remained the primary stumbling block.

‘We have agreed to reconvene today in the afternoon to continue the meeting,’ Dingyadi announced.

‘The reinstatement of the sacked workers is the only issue we are on. Apart from that, nothing else is lingering. We have made a lot of progress, the two main issues arebunionization and the reinstatement of the workers,’ he added.

On his part, Mr. Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, expressed concern over the economic implications of the strike and the deadlock. He stressed that resolving the dispute was crucial to sustaining Nigeria’s fragile economic momentum.

‘What is utmost in the minds of everybody: the public, the government, investors, and economic actors generally, is that we need to limit the danger of this action to the economy,’ Edun said.

‘We need to wrap it up, resolve it, and get workers back to work. We need gas flowing, we need crude flowing as input into production, which is critical to where the economy is right now. We don’t want that momentum to be broken, and that is why we were here for nine hours trying to resolve this issue. We are optimistic that later today we will be able to break the deadlock, resolve it, and put this behind us so the Nigerian economy can move forward,’ he added.

The nationwide strike, which has disrupted operations in critical sectors, was declared by PENGASSAN following the mass dismissal of workers by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. The union has insisted that until the sacked workers are reinstated, industrial action will continue, raising concerns about potential shortages of refined products and disruptions in gas supply.
