Yuchengco-led PetroEnergy Resources Corp. (PERC) is teaming up with a new investor: Japanese financial services provider SMFL Mirai Partners Company Ltd. will gain a 35 percent stake in its wind assets for P1.7 billion.

In a disclosure on Thursday, PERC said its board of directors had approved the sale of 6.84 million common shares out of the outstanding capital stock of PetroWind Energy Inc. (PWEI).

To formalize the deal, both groups would still need to ink a term sheet, share purchase agreement, and shareholders’ agreement.

‘The closing of the proposed transaction will be subject to the execution of the definitive agreements, the satisfaction of conditions precedents, and the receipt of the necessary corporate and regulatory approvals, including clearance from the Philippine Competition Commission, if required,’ the firm said.

After closing the transaction, PERC will retain a 25 percent stake, while its subsidiary PetroGreen Energy Corp. will hold 40 percent.

Also just this month, the group got a hold of Thailand’s BCPG Public Co. Ltd in PWEI for P1.9 billion, representing a 40 percent stake.

In an earlier filing, PERC explained that it aims to simplify its ownership structure and increase its direct economic participation in its renewable energy portfolio.

Additionally, PWEI is the owner and developer of a 49.2-megawatt (MW) wind farm in Nabas and Malay, Aklan. The first phase of the project, involving 36 MW of capacity, has been injecting power into the grid since June 2015. In May, the Nabas-2 expansion also achieved commercial operation.

Previously, it obtained a permit to connect the added capacity to the grid network. PWEI still needs to get a certificate of compliance from the Energy Regulatory Commission.

Meanwhile, PERC has interests in upstream oil exploration and development, renewable energy assets, and power generation.

In the January to June period, the company booked a 7.8-percent improvement in its consolidated net income, reaching P498 million from 464 million a year ago, boosted by its clean power assets and oil operations.

OPM icon Celeste Legaspi sparked discussions among netizens after she praised P-pop boy group SB19 while seemingly expressing less enthusiasm for BINI.

The veteran singer-actress shared her thoughts on the two groups when asked about her take on the state of the music industry, during an interview vlog for ‘Senior Moments with Louie Montalbo’ last May.

‘I like the SB19 a lot. They are really, really good. I’m not so crazy about the BINI kasi parang… Hindi sila masyadong… Anyway…,’ Legaspi said, opting not to continue her statement. ‘SB19-they’re really, really good. I’m so proud of them when I see them next to the Koreans.’

Legaspi also singled out SB19 member Stell whom she praised for his performance at the 70th birthday concert of OPM icon and National Artist Ryan Cayabyab in 2024. She also noted that she and the group’s leader, Pablo, are both Caviteños.

‘Ang galing galing nila (SB19). I love watching them,’ she said.

Clips from the YouTube vlog recently resurfaced on X, with fans drawing attention to the veteran actress-singer’s remark about the girl group. While some netizens acknowledged Legaspi’s personal preference, others expressed disappointment over the OPM veteran’s statement.

‘I still have respect for her as one of the pillars of OPM. So I don’t take it against her, and I disagree with the current negative sentiment against her. Iba-iba naman talaga ang preferences ng mga tao eh,’ one netizen said. ‘But for me, what her statement shows is that BINI is really the current standard for OPM. They become part of the conversation (in that case, as a point of comparison) even if they were not even initially mentioned.’

In the agency’s forecast on Friday morning, Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina said the southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, continued to affect parts of Luzon.

Badrina also noted that the state weather bureau was monitoring a low pressure area within the Philippine area of responsibility, but it was forecast not to make landfall in the country.

The Visayas grid continues to suffer from a power supply crunch, prompting the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) to place the region under red alert for three hours on Friday.

In an advisory, the red alert would be up from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Likewise, a yellow alert would take effect from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A yellow alert indicates that available power reserves are thinning, meaning any unexpected plant outage could trigger service interruptions. A red alert means that supply cannot meet demand, which increases the likelihood of rotational brownouts unless we manage consumption effectively.

The available capacity remained thin at 2,307 megawatts (MW) as of 8 a.m., while peak demand was 2,402 MW

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is conducting laboratory observations on lacewing larvae to evaluate their potential as a biological control agent against red-striped soft scale insects (RSSI) that have caused widespread damage to sugarcane plantations on Negros Island.

The study being done by the Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) in Negros Island Region is focusing on documenting the predatory behavior and feeding activity of the larvae against RSSI, as they are voracious predators known for their role in controlling aphid populations in agricultural fields.

The initiative forms part of the agency’s broader efforts to develop sustainable, science-based integrated pest management strategies using natural predators to suppress pest populations.

The RCPC laboratory, according to the DA, is preparing for the mass production of lacewing larvae, with distribution to pest-affected areas planned to begin later this year.

The low pressure area (LPA) being monitored inside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) is not expected to make landfall in the country, although it may develop into a tropical cyclone this weekend, the state weather bureau said on Friday.

Designated as 08i, the LPA was located 720 kilometers (km) east of Itbayat, Batanes as of 3 a.m., Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather specialist Obet Badrina said in the agency’s forecast on Friday morning.

‘Posible pa rin ito maging bagyo, lalo na this coming weekend, pero hindi naman ito magkakaroon ng direktang epekto sa ating bansa. Hindi natin ito inaasahang mag-landfall sa Pilipinas,’ Badrina explained.

(This may develop into a tropical cyclone, especially this coming weekend, but it won’t have a direct effect on our country. We don’t expect this to make landfall in the Philippines.)

‘Ang magiging direksyon nitong low pressure area kung sakaling maging bagyo ay sa bahagi naman ng Taiwan,’ he added.

(The direction of this low pressure area, if it does become a tropical cyclone, is towards Taiwan.)

In Pagasa’s latest tropical cyclone formation outlook, the weather bureau said LPA 08i had a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours as of 2 a.m. on Friday.

If the LPA develops into a tropical cyclone, it will be given the local name Pilandok, Badrina noted

A student’s post was behind the ‘security concern’ that prompted La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) in Mandaluyong City to switch to online classes on Thursday as a precaution, according to the police.

‘The specific threat was that someone posted on Facebook that they are a shooter. That’s what they said. Shooter. The word shooter was highlighted,’ Mandaluyong police chief Col. Reynan Patam told reporters.

‘The message was for students who reached out to their parents who then called school officials. That’s when our attention was called,’ Patam said.

‘Initially, the school administration had a person of interest … For now, we can’t divulge their identity. But, it was confirmed that the person is studying here,’ he added without saying whether the student was a male or female.

La Salle Green Hills announced on Wednesday night that because of a ‘security concern,’ all classes from pre-school to Grade 12, including International Baccalaureate and Alternative Education, would be conducted online the next day.

Safety first

‘In light of this, and in deep respect, empathy and solidarity regarding the recent heartbreaking incidents in the news, we refuse to leave our campus vulnerable or take any security risks with our students’ safety,’ it said.

Patam said that he and Eastern Police District (EPD) director Brig. Gen. Melecio Buslig Jr. met with school officials on Thursday to check security measures at LSGH.

He said that in response to the threat, the Mandaluyong police will be deploying a team of police officers to secure the campus in coordination with school officials. All the law enforcers on duty will be allowed to use only short firearms.

According to the Mandaluyong police chief, the deployment will begin when face-to-face classes resume at the school since officials had previously announced online class arrangements on Friday, Aug. 28, while Monday, Aug. 31, is a holiday.

Threat verification

In a separate statement, the EPD said it had tapped its Anti-Cybercrime Team to ‘verify the veracity and authenticity of the reported online threat.’

It also tasked the Mandaluyong police to intensify visibility around the school premises.

‘The EPD assures the public that the situation is being closely monitored and that appropriate measures are in place to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, school personnel, and the entire academic community in the Metro East,’ it said.

‘The public is likewise urged to remain calm and refrain from sharing unverified information that may cause unnecessary alarm,’ it added.

The country recently recorded its first mass school shootings, the first at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City on June 22. It was carried out by two students aged 14 and 15 who killed three students and wounded around 20 others.

The next incident happened on Aug. 18 at Ateneo de Zamboanga University. A 14-year-old Grade 8 student shot and killed a Grade 10 student before also killing himself.
