Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has outlined the steps the South East must take to secure the release of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, urging the region to remain law-abiding and appreciative as talks for a political solution continue.

Umahi made the remarks in Aba, Abia State, during the inauguration of multiple projects executed by Governor Alex Otti, an event he attended on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

His statement came amid renewed optimism surrounding Kanu’s release, with Governor Otti assuring that President Tinubu is ‘favourably disposed’ to resolving the issue.

‘I can assure you that I am engaging with Mr. President, and he is favourably disposed to it. I’m confident that in no distant future, Nnamdi Kanu will regain his freedom,’ Otti said.

The call for Kanu’s release also gained support from Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), who publicly appealed to President Tinubu during the event.

‘Mr. President has done so much for us, but there is one thing left, please, release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu so we can have absolute peace in the South East,’ Abaribe said, drawing loud applause from the audience.

Responding, Umahi noted that leaders from across the South East were already working quietly to achieve a peaceful resolution.

‘The governors of the South East, our senators, House of Reps members, and ministers including even those outside the region – are seriously working on a political solution,’ Umahi said. ‘But we must be law-abiding and appreciative. The President has love for the South East and is listening.’

Kanu has been in detention at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja since June 2021, following his controversial extradition from Kenya. Despite several court rulings, including a United Nations advisory opinion, ordering his release, the Federal Government has maintained that he must face treason-related charges.

Former governorship aspirant in Lagos, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran (aka Jandor), has advised former president Goodluck Jonathan not to heed calls to contest against President Tinubu in 2027.

Adediran, the Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

Adediran urged Jonathan to rather stay in retirement, saying those telling him to run against Tinubu were deceiving him.

He said Tinubu ‘is a master in the game of politics who cannot be defeated by Jonathan or any other figure in 2027.’

‘I disagree with people calling on Jonathan to re-contest, people saying Jonathan is the only person who can challenge Tinubu, citing his popularity and experience.

‘It was this same man (Tinubu) that defeated him (Jonathan) from the outside. So, they are not the same.

‘If you accidentally found yourself at the Aso Villa as President, it is different from somebody who gave his all to get there.

‘It is different from somebody who, against all odds, got there. They did all sorts for him not to get there, and he got there.

‘Such a man, cannot be put side by side with somebody who just slept and woke up and found himself on the seat of President.,’ he said

According to him, it will amount to a waste of time for Jonathan to attempt to dislodge Tinubu.in 2027.

Adediran urged Jonathan to listen to his wife, Patience, who had also urged him not to contest 2027 Presidency.

He said that Tinubu’s personality, popularity and experience were ‘intimidating’ and that Jonathan should not risk ‘a humiliating defeat’ in 2027.

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has been named winner of the Goal of the Month award for August in the Turkish Super Lig.

Onuachu earned the accolade for his superb header against Samsunspor during a Week 4 clash, which sealed victory for his club, Trabzonspor.

The award was presented to him by Trabzonspor Vice-President Zeyyat Keftas before the team’s home fixture against Kayserispor on Friday.

Onuachu, who has continued to impress since joining Trabzonspor, expressed his delight at the recognition, describing it as motivation to perform even better in the coming matches.

Onuachu joined the Turkish side at the beginning of the 2025/26 season after a short stint with Southampton in the English Premier League.

Community leaders in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, have joined forces to demand that the 2026 governorship seat be given to an indigene of Osogbo.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed August 8, 2026, for the governorship election.

Despite Osogbo’s strong influence in Osun politics since the state was created 34 years ago, no one from the town has ever become governor.

Speaking on a radio programme, High Chief Jimoh Ibrahim, the Baale of Gbodofon and Chairman of the Council of Baales in Osogbo, said the town is now united in its call to produce the next governor.

He praised the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun, for setting up the Osogbo Action Committee and the Osogbo Elders Council, which helped to end divisions among Osogbo leaders.

He said, ‘All Baales in Osogbo now speak with one voice. We fully support the Elders Council and are determined to ensure that Osogbo produces the next governor.’

Also speaking, Prince Adeleke Oduola Ibiloye, Chairman of the Osogbo Elders Council, said Osogbo has supported other parts of the state in past elections and now deserves their support in return.

‘We have always stood by others. Now it is Osogbo’s turn. We are ready to make it happen,’ he said.

With many prominent Osogbo indigenes preparing to contest under the APC, PDP, and ADC, the leaders expressed confidence that 2026 will finally mark the first time an Osogbo-born candidate becomes governor.

At least three Indian states have banned a cough syrup after it was linked to the deaths of nine children under the age of five.

Health officials said the children, from the states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, died after consuming Coldrif Cough Syrup, which laboratory tests later found to be contaminated with a toxic substance.

India’s Health Ministry confirmed on Saturday that the syrup contained diethylene glycol (DEG)-a chemical commonly used in industrial products such as antifreeze and solvents. Even in small amounts, DEG can cause severe poisoning and death.

‘The samples were found to contain diethylene glycol beyond the permissible limit,’ the ministry said in a statement.

The syrup, produced by Sresan Pharma at a facility in Tamil Nadu, has now been pulled off the shelves in several states.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said his government had banned the sale of the cough syrup and other products made by the same company.

‘The sale of this syrup has been banned throughout Madhya Pradesh. Other products from the same manufacturer are also being withdrawn,’ he said.

Authorities in Tamil Nadu and Kerala have also banned the product, according to local media reports.

Indian-made cough syrups have faced global scrutiny in recent years after similar incidents abroad. In 2022, more than 70 children in The Gambia died after consuming contaminated cough syrup believed to have been produced in India.
