National Security in Focus: Tinubu meets fresh military leadership, calls for unity of purpose

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Monday, held a strategic meeting with the newly appointed service chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, marking the beginning of what many see as a renewed effort to fortify Nigeria’s security architecture.

The closed-door meeting comes just days after the President announced a sweeping reshuffle of the nation’s military leadership.

The move, according to the Presidency, is aimed at reinvigorating the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other forms of insecurity across the country.

Under the new arrangement, General Olufemi Oluyede, who previously served as the Chief of Army Staff, has been elevated to the position of Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa.

The appointments also include new heads for the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), signalling a complete overhaul of the nation’s defence leadership structure.

Speaking on the development, a senior security aide at the Villa hinted that President Tinubu used the meeting to outline his administration’s expectations and the urgent need for synergy among the armed forces.

“The President emphasized coordination, intelligence sharing, and a people-centred approach to national security,” the aide disclosed.

Security experts have welcomed the reshuffle as a timely intervention, given the persistent threats facing the nation.

Prominent analyst Bulama Bukarti described the changes as “a crucial step toward restoring confidence in Nigeria’s security system,” urging the new commanders to focus on results rather than rhetoric.

The meeting is expected to be the first in a series of briefings as the new defence team settles into their roles.

Insiders suggest that the President may soon unveil a new national security framework that aligns with his administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

Meanwhile, reactions continue to trail the appointments across political and civil circles, with many Nigerians expressing optimism that the new service chiefs will bring fresh energy and professionalism to the nation’s armed forces.

Shocking: Orphanage owner docked for allegedly kidnapping children

By Ramatu Garba

The owner of Asaba Orphanage Home, Mr Ogugua Christopher was on Monday arraigned before a Kano State High Court for allegedly kidnapping two Kano children.

Christopher, who lives at Asaba, Delta, is standing trial alongside two others: Hauwa Abubakar and Nkechi Odlyne, on four count charge of Kidnapping and wrongful concealment of minors.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Prosecution Counsel, Ms Khadija Aliyu-Umar, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 21, 2016, and May 1, 2016, at Tishama Hotoro Quarters and Kawo Quarters, Kano, respectively.

She alleged that on June 21, 2016 at about 10:00 a.m at Tishama Hotoro Quarters the defendant kidnapped Maryam Suleiman,4, and wrongfully kept and concealed her in his orphanage home know as Happy home.

liyu-Umar further alleged that on May 1, 2016, at about 10:00 a.m., the defendant also kidnapped a four-year-old boy, Ibrahim Nura, from Kawo Quarters, Kano, and concealed him in the same orphanage.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the prosecution had earlier filed a 15-count charge, which was later amended and substituted with a four-count charge.

ccording to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 273 and 277 of the Penal Code Law of Kano State.

The Defence Counsel, Mr H M Nwoye, applied for bail on behalf of his client and urged the prosecution to provide all necessary case documents.

Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu ordered that the defendant be remanded in a Correctional Centre and directed the prosecution to furnish the defence with all relevant documents.

The judge adjourned the case until Nov. 12 for hearing.

NAN reports that Suleiman Muhammad, a Senior Intelligence Officer with the NAPTIP, informed the court that efforts were ongoing to produce the two other defendants, Abubakar and Odlyne ,who were not present in court.

NAN reports that the case followed a petition filed in December 2022 by the Protection Against Abduction and Trafficking of Our Children (PATAMOC) to NAPTIP, over the alleged disappearance of more than 600 children from Kano since 2010, out of which eight children were later rescued.

Benue: NAPTIP busts fake orphanage, rescues 26 out of 300 suspected trafficked children

By Aderogba George

Operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP have rescued 26 out of the over 300 children suspected to have been trafficked and sold to different persons within Benue, Enugu, Lagos, Nasarawa, and Abuja.

NAPTIP Press Officer, Mr Vincent Adekoye revealed this in a statement on Sunday.

ccording to the statement, the trafficked children at an orphanage home in Markurdi, Benue state.

“The breakthrough operations led by operatives of the agency for the suspects arrested in Markudi was carried out by the state command of the agency.

“The Markudi operation, NAPTIP rescued 26 children, out of the over 300 children suspected to have been trafficked and sold to different persons within Benue, Enugu, Lagos, Nasarawa, and Abuja.

dekoye stated that investigation is ongoing to trace the circumstances surrounding the 274 others, and to unravel the full extent of the syndicate’s activities.

ccording to him, this sad development is coming barely a few weeks after the Director-General of NAPTIP, Hajia Binta Adamu-Bello, expressed concern over the unwholesome activities of some operators of orphanages in Nigeria.

He added that the operation by the agency is a continuation of the renewed crackdown on orphanages and Care Homes across the Country which was ordered by the director-general of NAPTIP.

dekoya said the action followed series of reported cases of alleged infractions and illegal activities by the operators of the Orphanages homes in the country.

The press officer, stated that the agency was also prompted by a report lodged by a man, reporting that his four-year-old son was given out by his mother-in-law to an NGO without his consent.

He said that the petition lead to the arrest of several others, and uncovering of a wider network involved in trafficking and illegal adoption of children.

One of the suspects, a 60-year-old man(name witheld), is the founder of an internationally recognised Civil Society Organisation, National Council of Child’s Right Advocates of Nigeria (NACRAN), based in Benue.

dekoye stated that the suspect was arrested in connection with an alleged large-scale case of child trafficking, child sale, and illegal adoption.

He said that another 34-year-old female accomplice was equally arrested.

ccording to him, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects feasted on the vulnerability of the rural communities in Benue through a voodoo initiative called: “Back to School Project” to recruit children from crisis-ridden communities in the state.

He said that the suspects organised meetings with villagers and traditional leaders, convincing them that the project would sponsor children’s education.

“Parents were deceived into signing consent forms or verbally agreeing to release their children, with promises that they would see them again after three years.

“Over 300 children were reportedly handed over to the suspects. Some parents were unaware or did not sign any consent forms,.

“The children, aged between one and thirteen years, were transported to orphanage homes in Abuja and Nasarawa, where they were allegedly sold to interested couples under the guise of adoption, for amounts ranging from 1 million to 3 million per child.

“Some of the orphanages identified were used as holding centers where children awaited “adoption” or sale,” Adekoye said .

He said that four orphanage homes located at Kaigini, Kubuwa, Abuja; Masaka Area I, Mararaba, by Abaca Road; and Mararaba, behind the International Market, have been linked to the syndicate and are currently under investigation.

“One complainant alleged that he paid 2.8 million as an adoption fee and 100,000 consultancy fee to a member of the syndicate.

The identities of many of the rescued children have been changed, complicating tracing efforts, ” he said.

Reacting to the arrest, Adamu-Bello, described the situation as unbelievable and mind-bugling.

“Arising from the case at hand, I wish to say that issues of child trafficking and adoption are becoming a national crisis that requires urgent attention from all relevant stakeholders.

“A few weeks ago, based on credible intelligence, I expressed concern and alerted the State Ministries of Women Affairs on the unpatriotic and illegal activities of some Orphanage Operators across the Country.

“It is painful that some unpatriotic elements with recognised entities and status, now use their social class to deceive the already vulnerable people in the crisis-prone communities.

“These children are trafficked most of whom narrowly escape death in the wake of communal or farmerherder clashes. They are sold to challenged parents in the name of adoption without the valid legal consent of the parents.

“This is unacceptable, and those already arrested in connection with this wicked act shall be made to face the full wrath of the law.

“Our children are not commodities to be displayed in Orphanages and sold at will to the highest bidders. This must stop,” Adamu-Bello said.

In a related development, he said two other orphanage operators in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Nasarawa State, and some allegedly trafficked children were recovered. (NAN)

”Our joy of bumper harvests dampened by crash in food prices,” Farmers lament

By Reporters

Farmers in Nasarawa, Niger and Kogi states have lamented that sharp fall in prices of major food commodities had negatively affected their livelihoods, especially after purchasing fertilisers and other farm inputs at high costs.

The farmers who expressed their frustration with sharp drop in prices of food commodities spoke in separate interviews on Sunday.

Some of the farmers who confirmed that they recorded bumper harvests this season lamented that a 100kg bag of maize now sells for between 30,000 and 35,000, down from about 70,000 in 2024.

They also noted that a 100kg bag of locally processed rice, which sold for 150,000 last year, now goes for 120,000.

Mr Sunday Bulus, a farmer from Nasarawa State, described the development as unfortunate, saying many farmers had incurred heavy losses this year after purchasing fertilisers, herbicides and seeds at exorbitant prices.

“Some of us collected loans to farm and are still repaying them. Now, a bag of maize sells between 30,000 and 35,000,” he said.

Bulus appealed to the Federal Government to intervene by reducing the cost of farm inputs and addressing insecurity, which, he said, still prevented many farmers from accessing their farmlands.

nother farmer, Mr Haruna Ali, said the sharp drop in prices had left many farmers struggling to recover their investments.

“I bought maize and rice seeds, fertilisers and herbicides at high prices. A bag of maize that used to sell between 60,000 and 70,000 now sells for just 30,000 to 35,000,” he lamented.

Similarly, Mrs Hauwa Isah, said the decline in food prices had made it difficult for farmers to meet family needs such as school fees and healthcare.

“How can we pay our children’s school fees with these poor prices after buying inputs at high costs?” she asked,

She called on the government to establish a price control board to stabilise both farm input and produce prices.

Other farmers also raised concerns about insecurity, especially during the harvest season.

Mr Danjuma Ibrahim, a smallholder farmer in Lafia, said that herders often attacked farmers and carted away harvested produce.

“Kidnappings are also rampant. Transport costs are high, and farmers are forced to sell at giveaway prices,” he added.

Ibrahim, however, noted that the price drop could also be linked to the peak of the harvest season rather than government policy.

Mr Joshua Adagazu, an agricultural expert of the Nasarawa Agricultural Development Programme (NADP), Kokona Local Government Area, advised farmers to adopt proper storage methods to minimise post-harvest losses.

He warned against the indiscriminate use of chemicals during storage, urging the use of safer and natural preservation techniques.

“They should properly dry their produce, use clean, pest-free and well-ventilated storage facilities. If you must use chemicals, ensure that the crops are stored for at least three to four months before consumption,” Adagazu said.

He further encouraged farmers to use airtight bags or jerry cans for grain storage.

lso, Mr Ewuga Anjugu, a retired civil servant and farmer, appealed to government to train farmers on modern storage practices, while another farmer, Mr Peter Gamba, cautioned against the use of liquid chemicals in grain storage, describing them as harmful to human health.

In Niger, Dr Abdullahi Jabi, an agriculturist, and former National President of the Nigerian Farmers Association, blamed the situation on insecurity, poor road networks and flooding.

Jabi said that banditry had forced many farmers off their farmlands, while the high cost of post-harvest chemicals and lack of fertilisers had worsened their plight.

“As we speak, many farmers cannot access their farms due to flooding. Some have lost their crops and received no support from government,” he said.

He noted that the Federal Government’s recent downward review of agricultural product prices had contributed to the market slump.

“A bag of maize now sells for 35,000 and keeps dropping. Guinea corn sells for 40,000, down from 75,000 to 100,000 last year,” he said

Jabi attributed the crash to increased production, appreciation of the naira, and market oversupply, adding that the situation had discouraged long-term storage.

He urged government to subsidise agriculture and provide tractors, seeds and fertilisers at affordable rates, while addressing insecurity and illegal mining that had lured many youths away from farming.

Similarly, DrNurudeen Ibrahim, a farmer and agronomist, said improved security and favourable policies had encouraged higher yields this year.

He, however, called for sustained provision of organic fertilisers, tractors and low-interest loans to boost production and ensure food security.

nother farmer, Mr. Godfrey Akande, attributed the bumper harvest to adequate rainfall and timely fertiliser distribution but urged government to make inputs available earlier next year.

In Kogi State, some farmers described the 2025 harvest as better than last year’s but lamented that the joy was dampened by poor market prices.

Mr Maaji Bulus, a peasant farmer in Lokoja, said despite the good harvest, the market had been flooded with produce, forcing prices down.

“Prices of maize, beans and garri have fallen so badly that even if you sell all you harvested, you can’t recover a quarter of your costs. The reopening of borders and influx of imported foodstuffs have worsened the situation,” he said.

Bulus urged the Federal Government to revisit its border policy and reduce the cost of inputs to keep farmers in business.

lso, Mr Caleb Agbaje, another farmer from Adavi Local Government Area, identified erratic rainfall, flooding and insecurity as key challenges facing farmers.

He said Kogi’s location at the confluence of Rivers Niger and Benue made it particularly prone to flooding.

baje urged farmers to adopt climate-smart practices such as drought-resistant crops and water conservation techniques, while calling on government to invest in irrigation and rural infrastructure.

Mr Abdullahi Mamood, a vegetable farmer, lamented poor access to markets and modern equipment, saying the situation had reduced farmers’ profits.

He said the combination of bumper harvests, flooding and poor demand had led to price drops across major commodities.

Both Agbaje and Mamood appealed to governments at all levels to provide irrigation facilities, solar-powered pumps and credit schemes to support farmers.

They also called for better infrastructure and access to timely information to enhance productivity.

FCTA partners religious leaders to boost child immunisation compliance

By Aderogba George

The Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES) of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken its advocacy for participation in the ongoing immunisation campaign to churches, mosques and religious leaders.

The renewed push to strengthen public awareness and compliance with child immunisation with the active collaboration of religious leaders was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by Mrs Bola Ajao, Special Assistant on Media to the Mandate Secretary, HSES, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe.

ccording to the statement, HSES has stepped up advocacy and field operations across the FCT to ensure every child is adequately protected against vaccine-preventable diseases through timely immunisation.

She said field advocacy visits commenced Friday in several mosques, including Ansar-ud-Deen Society and Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Foundation, to promote acceptance and participation among Muslim communities.

On Sunday, the advocacy extended to major churches such as MFM, RCCG, ECWA, and Christ Holy Church International, reinforcing interfaith collaboration in achieving universal immunisation coverage.

Fasawe said the sensitisation drive, personally led by her, formed part of a citywide campaign ensuring no child, whether in schools, worship centres, or markets, was left unprotected from preventable diseases.

She explained that FCTA immunisation teams were simultaneously deployed across communities, including hard-to-reach areas, to ensure that every eligible child received full vaccination coverage.

The campaign, she added, involved collaboration with traditional leaders, religious organisations, community associations, NGOs, and partners including NPHCDA, UNICEF, WHO, and IVACA to achieve comprehensive outreach.

Fasawe stressed the importance of full participation in the ongoing Measles-Rubella Child Immunisation Campaign, explaining that immunisation was mandated under the Child Rights Act 2003 to safeguard every child’s health.

She reiterated that vaccines in the FCT were free, safe, and effective, urging parents not to allow ignorance or misinformation to hinder their children’s access to life-saving immunisation services.

“We will continue to educate our people and reassure them of vaccine safety and effectiveness,” Fasawe said, emphasising the government’s commitment to transparency and community engagement in health promotion.

Fasawe announced that the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, had approved free enrolment in the FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS) for fully vaccinated children attending public schools.

Fasawe revealed that HSES compiled a list of non-compliant schools, issued reminder letters, and mobilised 132 vaccination teams for a three-day mop-up exercise with NPHCDA.

She disclosed that enforcement of legal provisions had begun to curb non-compliance, warning that parents and school owners obstructing vaccination teams would face sanctions under the Child Rights Act 2003.

Quoting Sections 13 and 14 of the Act, Fasawe reminded parents and institutions of their duty to ensure children’s immunisation, noting that denial violated their right to health and protection.

She said the Secretariat’s teams had covered every part of the FCT, with parents turning out in large numbers to vaccinate their children amid gifts and awareness drives.

Senior Pastor Edwin Etomi of MFM commended the FCT Minister’s proactive approach to child health, while Evangelist Anselm Ikebata urged parents to seize the opportunity to protect their children’s future.

Google warns after 183 million passwords leak check your Gmail now!

ndgtoogle has issued an urgent warning to its users after a massive data leak exposed more than 183 million email addresses and passwords, with Gmail accounts among those compromised.

Cybersecurity experts say the leak was caused by infostealer malware, which secretly collects login details from infected computers and phones. The breach, made public by Troy Hunt, founder of the security platform Have I Been Pwned (HIBP), contains 3.5 terabytes of stolen data, one of the largest collections of hacked credentials ever discovered.

ccording to Hunt, the database, called the “Synthient Stealer Log Threat Data,” includes information from malware-infected devices and dark web trading forums. It contains stolen logins from major online services including andgtmail, Outlook, Facebook, Instagram, Apple, and more.

“This isn’t just another leak, it’s a constant stream of stolen information spreading across the web,” Hunt warned.

closer look at the sample data showed that 92 percent of the credentials came from previous breaches, while 8 percent roughly 16 million new email addresses had not been seen before, raising new concerns for users.

Cybersecurity firm Synthient, which discovered the dataset, said the malware logs record everything users type when logging into websites. “If someone signs in to Gmail, their email and password are saved and sold online,” said Benjamin Brundage, the firm’s lead analyst.

;handgtoogle Responds;/h In a statement, Google confirmed that its systems were not directly breached but warned that users could still be at risk if their devices were infected with malware.

“This report reflects broad infostealer activity that targets many types of web users,” Forbes reported.

oogle urged users to turn on two-step verification (2FA), use unique strong passwords, and perform a full security checkup through myaccount.google.com/security

;hHow to Check if You’re Affected;/h To find out if your email or password was exposed:

Visit HaveIBeenPwned.com

Enter your email address in the search box and click “Check.”

The site will show a list of any data breaches linked to your email.

If your account appears, change your password immediately and enable 2FA.

Experts also recommend running a malware scan using tools like Malwarebytes or Windows Defender to ensure your device is clean.

;hRising Global Concern;/h This latest incident follows several major leaks this year, including a 184 million-credential breach in May and another 16-billion-password leak in June, described as the largest ever.

uthorities and tech companies continue to monitor the situation, but experts say the real defence starts with individuals.

“Treat every link or login as a potential risk,” Hunt adviced. “Once your data is stolen, it’s almost impossible to take it back.”
