Mosquitoes found for the first time in European country once thought immune

For the first time in history, mosquitoes have been found in Iceland, a country long believed to be completely free of the insects.

The discovery comes after the North Atlantic nation experienced record-breaking heat this spring, raising fresh concerns about the effects of global warming on its fragile ecosystem.

Local insect enthusiast Bjorn Hjaltason spotted the mosquitoes last week while observing moths using wine-soaked ropes. He later identified two females and one male, which experts at the Icelandic Institute of Natural History confirmed as Culiseta annulata, one of the few species capable of surviving winter.

The insects were found in Kjós, a glacial valley southwest of the capital, Reykjavik. Until now, Iceland and Antarctica were the only two places on Earth without mosquitoes, largely due to the cold climate and lack of stagnant water.

‘I could tell right away that this was something I had never seen before,’ Hjaltason wrote on Facebook, adding that ‘the last fortress seems to have fallen.’

Experts say the development follows an unusually hot May in Iceland, when temperatures hit 26.6°C (79.8°F) – the highest ever recorded in the country. Normally, heatwaves last just two or three days, but this year, temperatures above 20°C persisted for over a week.

Entomologist Matthías Alfreðsson, who confirmed the discovery, said the species is common across Europe and North Africa but it remains unclear how they reached Iceland. He added that scientists will monitor the area next spring to determine whether the mosquitoes have established a permanent population.

Hjaltason believes the insects may have arrived through shipping routes. ‘Things often come in with containers,’ he said. ‘But if three of them came straight into my garden, there were probably more.’

The finding has sparked discussions among climate scientists, who say Iceland’s warming trend could reshape its once mosquito-free environment.

What Hamzat told Lagos workers that left many deep in thought

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has urged staff of the Local Government Service Commission to embrace teamwork, empathy, and purpose-driven leadership as vital ingredients for effective service delivery at the grassroots level.

Speaking during the inaugural OLGE and T Leadership Series webinar organised by the Office of Local Government Establishments and Training, Hamzat stressed that the strength of any organisation lies not in its financial resources or technology, but in the collective effort of its people.

‘For an organisation to succeed, teamwork is key, not finance, not strategy, not technology. Teamwork remains the most powerful competitive advantage because it fuels daily productivity and drives development at state and national levels,’ he said.

The Deputy Governor explained that every staff position carries value and contributes to institutional success, adding that collaboration and mutual respect among workers are the foundations of progress.

He further observed that while leadership challenges remain a recurring issue in Nigeria, true leadership begins with empathy, active listening, and patience.

‘A good leader must win the people’s hearts, not just their minds,’ Hamzat noted.

‘Leadership must be purposeful and emotionally intelligent. Leaders are made, not born-it depends on self-awareness and the choices we make,’ he said.

Hamzat also encouraged participants to regularly question their motives and timing when making decisions, emphasising that reflection and information gathering are essential tools for responsive and humane leadership.

Touching on national cohesion, the Deputy Governor said unity in language could enhance trust and foster national development, citing India as an example where linguistic alignment has strengthened social integration.

He added that effective land use planning remains critical to achieving food security and economic growth, urging Nigerians to adopt a more deliberate approach to agricultural and urban planning.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Local Government Establishments and Training Commission, Kamal Ayinde Bayewu, said the leadership series was designed to strengthen capacity building among local government staff.

He commended the innovation and encouraged participants to apply the lessons from Hamzat’s lecture to improve service delivery.

Bayewu praised the Permanent Secretary, Office of Local Government Establishments and Training, for initiating the programme, describing it as a step towards building a more efficient and responsive local government workforce.

The Ondo Government has reacted to a leaked memo by the Department of State Services, DSS indicating plan by ISWAP attack on some communities in the state by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist group.

The DSS had allegedly sent the leaked security memo to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Akure.

But Ondo government, in a statement issued by its Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Idowu Ajanaku, on Wednesday in Akure urged residents of the state not to panic over the leaked memo

The Commissioner noted that the memo was part of regular intelligence reports that were routinely shared among security agencies and the government.

The Commissioner urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and reports any suspicious activity to the nearest security Agency, adding that measures were being taken to prevent any attack in the state.

‘The Government of Ondo State is aware of the recent security alert memo of the State Security Services addressed to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Akure regarding a possible terrorist attack in some parts of the state, which got leaked to the media.

‘Such reports are a normal part of security operations, aimed at identifying and preventing potential threats.

Nigeria records 172 deaths from Lassa Fever

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said 172 deaths have been recorded from Lassa fever in 21 states so far in 2025, a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.6 per cent, higher than the 17 per cent recorded during the same period in 2024.

NCDC said this in its Lassa Fever Situation Report for Week 40 (Sept. 29-Oct. 5).

According to NCDC, 924 confirmed cases and 8,041 suspected cases had been reported from 106 Local Government Areas so far with Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba and Ebonyi accounting for 90 per cent of all confirmed cases.

Ondo State alone was responsible for 35 per cent of the cases.

The centre said that the report indicated that confirmed cases rose from four in Week 39 to 13 in Week 40, all recorded in Ondo State.

The NCDC noted that the predominant age group affected was 21 to 30 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:0.8, adding that no new healthcare worker infection was reported during the week under review.

It attributed the high fatality rate to the late presentation of cases and poor health-seeking behaviour among residents of high-burden communities.

It also listed poor environmental sanitation and low awareness as factors driving infections.

To strengthen response efforts, the NCDC said it had deployed 10 national rapid response teams to affected states using a One Health approach.

It added that ongoing activities include training of healthcare workers, risk communication campaigns and the distribution of response commodities such as Ribavirin, PPEs, and thermometers to treatment centres.

According to it, other interventions include the ongoing INTEGRATE clinical trial in Ondo State, capacity-building workshops for clinicians, and environmental health campaigns in high-burden states.

The NCDC urged states to strengthen community engagement on prevention and improve early case detection and referral.

It also called on healthcare workers to maintain a high index of suspicion for Lassa fever and initiate timely treatment to reduce deaths.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), reports Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic disease endemic in Nigeria, spread mainly through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rats.

It can also spread person-to-person, especially in hospitals without strict infection control.

The illness causes fever, weakness, vomiting, bleeding and in severe cases, organ failure.

Nigeria records the highest global burden, with most cases from Ondo, Edo, Bauchi, Taraba, and Ebonyi states.

It peaks in the dry season ‘December-April’ and has a high fatality rate, especially when patients present late.

How Rihanna lost $36m on a failed Louis Vuitton fashion deal

Pop superstar and billionaire entrepreneur, Rihanna, has reportedly lost a staggering $36 million following the collapse of her luxury fashion line, Fenty, launched in partnership with French fashion giant Louis Vuitton (LVMH).

According to new filings from her British company, Denim UK Holdings, the singer’s high-end fashion venture suffered heavy financial losses before shutting down in 2021.

Rihanna, 37, unveiled Fenty in 2019 as part of a historic collaboration with LVMH, making her the first Black woman to lead a brand under the luxury group. However, the project struggled to stay afloat, largely due to COVID-19 travel restrictions that prevented the singer from overseeing production in Paris and Italy.

Reports show that Rihanna invested pound 29.9 million (about $34.8 million) through Denim UK Holdings, while LVMH matched her contribution with a similar amount. The French-based company operated under the trade name Project Loud France, a nod to her fifth studio album Loud.

Despite its star power and initial buzz, the brand failed to resonate with consumers. Items such as a padded denim jacket priced at nearly $1,000 and an $810 corseted shirtdress were seen as too expensive, especially when compared to her more accessible brands, Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty.

In 2021, Rihanna and LVMH jointly agreed to close the fashion label and focus on her booming cosmetics and lingerie lines. In a statement, both parties said:

‘LVMH and Rihanna reaffirm their ambition to concentrate on the growth and long-term development of the Fenty ecosystem, focusing on cosmetics, skincare, and lingerie.’

Why I became a cab driver after fame – Zlatan

Nigerian rapper Temidayo Omoniyi, popularly known as Zlatan Ibile, has opened up on the challenges he faced as an upcoming artiste during his days at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, despite winning a major music competition.

Zlatan, who won the Airtel One Mic Talent Show in 2014 at the age of 19, revealed that he struggled financially after the victory and had to convert the car he won from the competition into a commercial taxi to make ends meet.

Speaking in an interview with popular content creator and streamer, Shank Comic, the Zanku Records boss said he would drive the car at night from Abeokuta to Shagamu, charging ?350 per trip, just to afford food and support his education.

‘Back in school, when there was no money for food, I would just wait till night and use the car I won from the Airtel One Mic Talent show to run cab from Abeokuta to Shagamu for ?350,’ he recounted.

Although he gained some recognition after the talent show, Zlatan said financial stability did not follow immediately. His major breakthrough came in 2017 when he featured renowned rapper Olamide on his hit track, My Body, a collaboration he described as the turning point of his career.

Tension in Senate: Akpabio, Natasha clash over abortion bill

A heated moment played out on the floor of the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday after Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) clashed during deliberations on the Criminal Code Amendment Bill 2025, which seeks to impose stiffer penalties for aiding or procuring abortions in Nigeria.

The bill, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and earlier passed by the House of Representatives, proposes to increase the jail term for anyone who provides drugs or instruments to facilitate abortion from three years to ten years, without the option of a fine.

According to Bamidele, the proposed amendment aims to update the nation’s Criminal Code Act in line with ‘contemporary social, moral, and medical realities,’ arguing that the growing number of unlawful abortions poses serious ethical and public health concerns.

Debate on the bill quickly grew tense as lawmakers expressed divided opinions on what should be classified as an ‘unlawful abortion.’

Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) cautioned against passing the amendment without broad stakeholder consultation. He argued that the proposed law could discourage medical professionals from offering life-saving interventions for women in danger.

‘We must not legislate in a way that endangers life,’ Ningi warned, urging the Senate to suspend further deliberation on the matter.

Sensing growing disagreement, Senate President Akpabio ruled that the bill be stepped down and referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further consultation and recommendations within two weeks.

However, the decision sparked another moment of drama when Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, one of only two women present at plenary, sought recognition to make a contribution after Akpabio’s ruling.

‘Mr. Senate President, please may I speak? I am a woman, and abortion has to do with women. It is very important, sir,’ she appealed.

Akpabio, however, declined her request, insisting that the matter had already been suspended ‘in totality.’

At that point, Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) raised a point of order, arguing that allowing Natasha to speak after the gavel had fallen would breach the Senate’s standing rules.

‘If you grant this exemption to Senator Natasha, then you must extend it to everyone else,’ Oshiomhole stated. ‘The rules should be applied uniformly.’

Citing Rule 52 (Subsection 6) of the Senate Standing Orders, Akpabio upheld Oshiomhole’s objection and ruled Natasha out of order, noting that ‘no matter concluded by the Senate can be reopened during the same session.’

Reps panel invites cooperative colleges over allege budget infractions

The House of Representatives Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions has invited the managements of Federal Cooperative College, Ibadan, and Federal Cooperative College, Oji River, over alleged non-submission of 2024 and 2025 capital budget.

In a statement by the Clerk of the committee, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, the committee asked the provosts of both institutions to appear before it on Thursday with relevant documents to account for expenditures within the period.

According to the clerk, the meeting will hold at 2:00 p.m. in Conference Room 028 at New Building, House of Representatives, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

He said that the appearance and submission of the relevant documents were critical to determining both institutions’ budgetary provisions for the 2026 appropriation year.

‘I am directed to remind you that the committee has not received your submissions on the above subject matter and you did not appear before the committee on the day allotted to your agency.

‘You are by this letter reminded that your appearance and submission of these vital documents will go a long way to determine your budgetary provisions for 2026 appropriations.

‘You are hereby requested to appear unfailingly before the committee with your Director of Procurement and Director of Finance.

‘Failure to honour this invitation could affect the colleges’ 2026 budget consideration; prioritize full compliance with the legislative oversight process and cooperation with the committee,’ he said.
