Anambra election: ADC’s Nwosu fumes over communities, LG’s donations to Soludo

The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Anambra Nov. 8 governorship election, John Nwosu, has raised alarm over donations to the incumbent and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Chukwuma Soludo (APGA) by some communities, citizens and local governments in the state.

Nwosu in a Statement in Awka on Sunday described the act of citizens purportedly making donations for the re-election of the incumbent governor as worrisome.

According to him, the practice raised a serious question in relation to the nation’s electoral laws and moral codes.

He condemned the donation to Soludo being done as a show of his endorsement ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

He said ‘I am aware of reports that some groups and towns have made humongous donations to the candidate of APGA in purported support of his campaign.

‘Such donations raise real concerns about compliance with the Electoral Act, morality, and the rule of law,’ he said.

Nwosu said that while individuals were free to support candidates of their choice, any form of quid-pro-quo arrangement, such as inflated contracts with kickbacks disguised as campaign donations would amount to corruption and criminal subterfuge.

He questioned reports that certain local governments had joined in the donations in spite of having ‘little to show for the funds received from the federal government’.

‘If cash-strapped local governments are donating millions to the governor’s campaign, that is a charade and a blatant display of official dishonesty,’ he said.

Nwosu said the APGA-led government was tacitly buying votes and deceiving the public in their campaigns.

‘At no time in Anambra’s political history have we witnessed such open desperation to manipulate the voting public.

‘I urge the electorate to reject inducements and defend their democratic rights; those who sell their votes are selling their patrimony, freedom, and future.

‘Elections should be won by popular choice, not through purchased loyalty,’ he said.

He called on the electorate in Anambra to vote for the ADC for the restoration of honesty, fairness, and people-centered leadership in government.

Reacting to the ADC statement, Dr Law Mefor, Commissioner for Information in Anambra defended the donations, describing them as a crowd funding system and part of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s disruptive change.

Mefor said the voluntary donations which came from students, market associations, communities and senatorial districts were evidence of the acceptance Soludo’s candidacy enjoyed among the people.

‘It is different from the past when governorship candidates offered money to groups and communities in search of votes,’ he said.

Internet Meltdown: Snapchat, others crash as Amazon cloud fails

A massive technical glitch at Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday morning has triggered a global internet disruption, taking down hundreds of popular websites and digital platforms from Snapchat and Fortnite to Duolingo and even Amazon.com itself.

According to data from DownDetector, the outage began shortly after 8am BST, with more than 6,000 reports flooding in from affected users in the United States and over 1,600 complaints from the United Kingdom.

The disruption has also affected Amazon Alexa, Ring, and Prime Video, leaving users unable to access smart home devices or stream content.

Cybersecurity expert Jake Moore from ESET told the Daily Mail that the incident is ‘highly likely due to an internal error’ within Amazon’s infrastructure.

‘AWS has about 30 percent of the global cloud infrastructure market which makes up a large proportion of the internet,’ Moore said. ‘So an outage like this can hit hard across the world.’

The issue is believed to have originated from Amazon’s data center facilities in North Virginia, one of the company’s largest and most critical hubs for hosting and networking.

On its AWS Health Dashboard, the tech giant confirmed that an ‘operational issue’ is affecting ‘multiple services,’ adding that engineers were ‘actively working to mitigate the issue and identify the root cause.’

While some outages can result from cyberattacks, Moore said this particular disruption appears to have caused a ‘cascading failure’ – where one malfunctioning system triggers others across the network.

‘Because so many apps and websites rely so heavily on AWS for cloud hosting and data processing, the disruption rapidly becomes widespread and creates a knock-on effect,’ he said.

Amazon Web Services, a backbone of the global internet, powers servers and storage for governments, universities, and companies worldwide. Monday’s outage serves as a sharp reminder of just how dependent the world has become on a handful of tech giants to keep the web running smoothly

Strike: NLC meets ASUU, SSANU, others

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday began a crucial meeting with leaders of key tertiary education unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), over the ongoing nationwide strike crippling universities and other higher institutions.

The closed-door meeting, holding at the NLC national headquarters in Abuja, aims to find a lasting solution to the protracted industrial dispute and address long-standing grievances against the Federal Government.

The NLC had earlier written to invite all union leaders in tertiary institutions for the emergency session, following the collapse of recent negotiations between the unions and the government.

Nigeria’s higher education sector has been grounded in recent weeks, with universities shutting down after ASUU declared an indefinite strike on Sunday.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the strike at a briefing in Abuja after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued on September 28. He blamed the action on the government’s failure to resolve key issues bordering on staff welfare, unpaid salary arrears, infrastructural decay, and non-implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement.

Although the Minister of Education, Prof. Tunji Alausa, recently claimed that the government had released N50 bn for earned allowances and budgeted N150 bn for needs assessment projects in 2025, ASUU described the measures as ‘tokenistic’ and ‘far from the comprehensive reform the sector requires.’

The union is demanding the full implementation of the 2009 agreement, payment of withheld salaries, outstanding promotion arrears, release of cooperative deductions, and an end to the victimisation of members.

The NLC, in its solidarity message, reaffirmed support for all education unions and criticised the government’s alleged disregard for collective bargaining.

The Congress said Monday’s meeting would determine the next line of action, including possible mass mobilisation if the government fails to address the crisis.

Tensions rise in ADC as party battles internal betrayal

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended its National Vice Chairman (South-South), Dr. Usani Uguru Usani, for allegedly breaking party rules and acting in ways that could harm the party’s unity and success.

The decision was made during a meeting of the party’s Cross River State Working Committee (SWC) held on October 15, 2025.

According to a statement from the State Publicity Secretary, Hon. James Otudor, Dr. Usani was accused of anti-party activities, insubordination, and actions damaging to the party’s image. He said the suspension will last until the party’s disciplinary committee finishes its investigation.

The SWC also criticized the appointment of Ms. Jackie Wayas as the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, saying she was imposed on the state without consultation. They claimed she had not worked with the state leadership or shown commitment to the growth of the ADC in Cross River.

The committee called on the national leadership to replace her with someone credible, experienced, and loyal to the party’s vision.

The SWC further expressed concern about members of the Coalition Movement who had publicly joined the ADC but never completed their registration. It warned that the party would not allow dual membership or tolerate members who hold positions in other political parties.

The party gave all coalition members until October 25, 2025, to complete their registration at the ward level or lose their roles in decision-making.

The Cross River chapter reaffirmed its loyalty to the ADC national leadership, promising to provide responsible and people-focused leadership across the South-South region.

It urged all members to stay calm, law-abiding, and united as the party’s disciplinary process continues.

This building is a continuation of her purpose – turning love into legacy,’ he stated.

Two men bag death sentence for stabbing Kano lecturer to death

Two men identified as Aliyu Hussaini, and Amir Zakariyya were on Monday sentenced to death by hanging for stabbing Buhari Imam, a lecturer with the Northwest University Kano to death.

Hussaini of Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters, and Zakariyya of Unguwar Malam Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area, were convicted on a three-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide.

Delivering judgment, Justice Fatima Adamu of Kano State High Court held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

‘The action of the defendants shows total disregard for human life.

‘I hereby sentence the defendants to five years’ imprisonment each for conspiracy, 10 years’ imprisonment each for robbery without an option of fine.

‘The convicts are hereby sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide. May God have mercy on them,’ the judge declared

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the convicts committed the offence on June 11, at Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters, Kano.

He said that at about 3.30 a.m, on the said date, the defendants conspired, armed themselves with dangerous weapons such as long knives and machet.

‘In the process the defendants robbed the victim(Imam) of his mobile phone and caused his death by stabbing him in the stomach, thigh, and back’ Abba-Sorondinki said

The prosecution presented three witnesses and tendered medical reports and photographs of the deceased as exhibits to prove their case against the defendant.

The convicts, however, denied committing the offence.

The prosecutor said the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 97(1), 298(c) and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, presented the convicts to testify in their defence and pleaded for leniency.

Iran’s Khamenei fights back as Trump’s nuclear boast sparks new feud

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that America destroyed Iran’s nuclear sites.

In a message on his official website, Khamenei told Trump to ‘keep dreaming’ and questioned why the U.S. president thinks he has the right to decide what another country can or cannot do with its nuclear program.

Back in June, Israel launched heavy airstrikes on Iran, and the U.S. briefly joined in, hitting several nuclear facilities.

Speaking recently at the Israeli Knesset, Trump said the U.S. dropped 14 bombs that ‘obliterated’ Iran’s nuclear sites.

He repeated the same claim on Fox News, calling the operation ‘the most beautiful military strike,’ and said Iran was no longer ‘the bully of the Middle East.’

However, the real damage from the strikes is still unclear. The Pentagon said Iran’s nuclear program was only delayed by one to two years, while a U.S. intelligence report suggested the setback lasted just a few months.

Khamenei described Trump’s comments as ‘improper, wrong, and bullying.’

The June attacks happened just before a planned round of nuclear talks between Iran and the U.S.

Those talks have since stopped. Iran now says it will only return to negotiations if the U.S. guarantees it will not use military force again.
