Wike-backed PDP tackles Makinde, Bala Mohammed over alliance with APM

By Emmanuel Oloniruha

The Abdulraman Mohammed-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said contrary to the pictures being painted by Governors Bola Mohammed and Seyi Makinde of Bauchi and Oyo States respective, the party is not in any form of alliance with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

“Let us state clearly and unequivocally that the PDP is not part of any alliance, coalition, agreement, or political arrangement with the APM or any other political party regarding this gathering or any related political activity,” the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP faction, Jungudo Mohammed, stated this at a news conference on Thursday in Abuja.

The press conference was held in reaction to the signing of Memorandum of Understanding between the PDP and APM in Ibadan, Oyo State earlier in the day. Under the agreement, candidates of a faction of PDP backed by Makinde will contest the 2027 election on the platform of APC.

The Bauchi state governor had also entered into similar agreement with the APM.

Makinde had at a rally held after the signing of the MoU declared that he would contest the 2027 presidency under the PDP/APM alliance.

He also declared that the PDP/APM alliance will produce candidates that will contest for every position in 2027.

While disowning the alliance, Mohammed said that the PDP remained strong, united, and fully prepared to participate in the 2027 general elections without any legal or political impediments.

“Any person or group claiming to be acting on behalf of the PDP in connection with this event is doing so without the knowledge, approval, consent, or authority of the party.

“What is being presented to Nigerians as a political alliance is nothing more than another desperate attempt by Gov. Seyi Makinde and his associates to mislead the public and manufacture a false impression of political relevance and support,” he said.

Mohammed urged the members of the public to disregard what he described as propaganda, theatrics, and misleading narratives surrounding the Ibadan event.

“Again, for the avoidance of doubt, we wish to reiterate that the PDP has absolutely nothing to do with the gathering in Ibadan.

He added that contrary to the claim of Makinde, the PDP was conducting its screening exercise for governorship and presidential aspirants at Legacy House, Maitama, Abuja, the annex office of our national headquarters as the MOU was being signed in Ibadan.

“This is coming after yesterday’s successful completion of the States and National Assembly Screening exercise across the country,” he said.

The national publicity secretary of the PDP faction which is loyal to the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, also accused both governors of sponsoring propaganda aimed at deliberately distorting and misrepresenting the Supreme Court judgment in order to create confusion within the party.

He, however, said that the reality was clearly demonstrated by the number of aspirants who obtained and submitted their nomination forms, under Mohammad and Sen. Samuel Anyawu-led PDP.

Mohammed asked why Makinde and Bala refused to remain within the structure they claimed to recognise by purchasing nomination forms from the so-called Kabiru Tanimu led Interim National Working Committee (iNWC).

The National Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, fielding questions from newsmen said that the Mohammed led leadership has written to law enforcement agency and had alleged the Turaki-led NWC of impersonation.

“We have written to the security agencies, the Police, and the DSS on the issue of impersonation.

“They have already invited Sen. Adolphus Wabara, Turaki, and others who inuagurated themselves at the Shehu Yar’adua Center, where the so-called interim NWC was formed.

“So the matter is before the security agencies in Nigeria, and after that, we hope that they will be prosecuted,” he said.

On the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment on PDP leadership crisis, Anyanwu urged the media to be guided, saying Mohammed led NWC remained the recognised PDP leadership.

“There is only one PDP today. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been here, and has verified the current NWC,” Anyanwu said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Gozi-Anyaokei is being prosecuted by the Abuja Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the anti-graft agency said in a statement on Thursday.

EFCC alleged that Gozi-Anyaokei as the Managing Director of Viscount Microfinance Bank in 2022 was entrusted with N19 million by one Ernest Terkula Jor for the purpose of investment.

In the count two, EFCC alleged that Gozi-Anyaokei as the Managing Director of Viscount Microfinance Bank in 2022 was entrusted $30,000.00 also by Ernest Terkula Jor for the purpose of investment.

But she also dishonestly converted the funds to her own use in violation of the mode in which the contract is to be discharged, an offence contrary to Section 311 of the Penal Code Act Cap 532 (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (Abuja) 1990) and punishable under Section 312 of the same Act.”

She pleaded “not guilty,” following which prosecution counsel, S.N Robert, prayed the court for a trial date.

Justice Halilu granted the defendant bail with two sureties, who must have landed property within Abuja. The defendant was also ordered to deposit her traveling documents with the court and must not travel outside the country except with the permission of the court.

The matter was adjourned till July 19, 2026, for commencement of trial.

Similarly, the Abuja Zonal Directorate of the EFCC on Monday, May 11, 2026, arraigned one Ugochukwu Daniel Ifeanachor before Justice J. O. Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja for fraud.

Ifeanachor is facing prosecution on a two-count charge, bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, advance fee fraud and money laundering to the tune of N20 million.

He pleaded “not guilty,” prompting prosecution counsel, Joyce Audu to request a trial date.

Justice Abdulmalik adjourned the matter till July 6, 2026 and ordered that the defendant be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, pending the commencement of trial.

Abuja Cleric remanded in prison after arraignment for rape of 14-year-old girl

By Edith Nwapi

Justice Modupe Osho-Adebiyi of Abuja High Court on Thursday ordered the remand of Amos Isah, founder and General Overseer of Prophetic Voice of Fire Ministry International, Gwagwalada, in the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Kuje, FCT over alleged defilement.

The remand of the cleric was pending the pending verification of his previous bail, according to the court.

The prosecution alleged that Isah lured a- 14-year-old girl to his office in the church premises and defiled her.

The prosecution said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 3, 4 and 14 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition)Act, 201

Isah was arrested by the police in June 2025, and was arraigned on July 22,2025 before a vacation judge, Justice J.E Obanor in a high court in Maitama.

The case was then reassigned to Justice Osho-Adebiyi on March 11, following an application from the prosecution counsel, Aderonke Imana.

On April 21, the matter came up before Justice Osho-Adebiyi, however, the defendant did not appear in court.

When the case came up on Thursday, the cleric pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The defence Counsel, O.U Sule, SAN, informed the court that his client had been granted bail by a sister court.

Justice Osho-Adebiyi ordered the defendant counsel to present documentation of the bail previously granted Isah by another high court.

The Judge noted that the record of the bail and sureties was not before the court.

“His record of surety is not before the court; if I tell him to go, who am I releasing him to?”, the judge asked .

Sule persisted in his request that the defendant be released on his honour, but the judge declined.

“Until I get the record, there is really not much I can do. You have not applied for bail before me.”

Sule then asked for an oral bail application, but the prosecution (Imana) informed the court that she has another matter at another court.

“I am opposed to the oral application, I am before another court,” she said.

Justice Osho-Adebiyi noted further that the sureties were not in court, and their documents were not before the court.

“The defendant is hereby remanded to the correctional centre pending his bail determination.”

The court, therefore, directed the defendant counsel (Sule) to inform the registrar when they will be ready with the necessary documents.

Justice Osho-Adebiyi then adjourned until June 30 for commencement of trial.

Nigeria’s education future depends on immediate action — Ayobami Eruobami

Media and communications strategist Ayobami Eruobami has called for urgent and collective action to transform Nigeria’s education sector, stressing that the country’s future will be shaped by individuals and organisations willing to move beyond discussion and contribute to meaningful change.

Eruobami made this known in a statement where he highlighted the growing opportunities within Nigeria’s education system, despite the challenges often associated with the sector.

According to him, a quiet transformation is already taking place across the country, driven by young Nigerians, educators, and institutions adapting to modern realities.

“Nigeria’s education sector is often discussed in terms of challenges. However, there is another side to the story — one that is not told often enough: opportunity,” he said.

“Across the country, a quiet transformation is already underway. Young Nigerians are learning beyond traditional classrooms, educators are adapting to new methods, and institutions are beginning to rethink how knowledge is delivered in a digital age.”

Eruobami noted that the critical issue is no longer whether Nigeria’s education system can evolve, but whether stakeholders are prepared to accelerate that evolution.

Speaking from his experience in media, communication, and narrative building, he described education as a powerful national brand whose success depends largely on how it is positioned and supported.

“I see education not just as a sector, but as a powerful national brand. Like any brand, its strength depends on how it is shaped, communicated, and supported,” he stated.

The media entrepreneur explained that through Erumedia Group and Pressford, he has continued to advocate for stronger storytelling around education, noting that public perception plays a significant role in attracting partnerships, funding, and innovation.

“At Erumedia Group, we believe stories can inspire action. The stories we choose to tell about education today will influence the investments, policies, and innovations of tomorrow,” he said.

He added that education must be intentionally presented as a space filled with opportunities capable of attracting collaboration between government institutions, private organisations, and innovators.

According to Eruobami, Nigeria needs stronger connections between classrooms and industries, as well as communication strategies that focus not only on the sector’s problems but also on its progress and potential.

“We need stronger bridges between classrooms and industries. We need platforms that amplify success stories in education, not just its challenges,” he said.

He further emphasized that no single institution can independently transform the country’s education system, calling instead for collective effort and bold thinking.

Eruobami described the present moment as a defining one for “builders of ideas, platforms, and systems” capable of equipping young Nigerians with relevant knowledge and skills.

“If we get it right, the impact will extend far beyond classrooms. It will shape industries, strengthen the economy, and redefine Nigeria’s position on the global stage,” he said.

Seven arrested as NSCDC uncovers rail vandalism network

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it has uncovered a syndicate allegedly involved in vandalising and recycling critical national infrastructure, including railway facilities, NNPC pipelines and water board installations.

Speaking in Kaduna on Wednesday, the corps’ National Public Relations Officer, ACC Babawale Afolabi, said the operation was launched after a viral video exposed the destruction of rail tracks along the Kaduna-Kano corridor.

According to him, operatives uncovered what he described as a sophisticated local and international network allegedly using Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Birnin Yero, Igabi Local Government Area, as cover for illegal activities.

He alleged that vandalised rail materials were compressed into scrap at the Kaduna facility before being transported to Aba, Abia State, where they were recycled into iron rods and nails.

“This criminal cycle has caused the Federal Government monumental economic losses,” Afolabi said.

The NSCDC said seven suspects were arrested, including company officials, scrap dealers and weighbridge operators.

Recovered exhibits included railway tracks, sleepers, suspected NNPC and water board pipes, as well as machinery allegedly used to process and conceal stolen infrastructure.

Afolabi also disclosed that five additional suspects were arrested over alleged vandalism along the Kaduna-Abuja rail corridor in Gwagwada community, Chikun Local Government Area.

Quoting the Commandant General, he said: “Under this leadership, the NSCDC will not treat economic sabotage with kid gloves. We are going after the sponsors.

“This operation marks the beginning of a new phase in our crackdown on syndicates supporting vandalism under any disguise.”

Also speaking, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr Kayode Opeifa, commended the NSCDC for recovering what he described as large quantities of railway materials hidden beneath heaps of scrap.

Represented by NRC Chief Technical Officer, Paul Doche, Opeifa said: “We have gone round and identified some of our materials there. These are national assets.”

France seeks stronger partnership with Africa

Mr. Nicolas Forissier, France’s Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness, says France is eager to build a win-win partnership with Africa to secure a more reliable future for younger and unborn generations.

Forissier spoke on the sidelines of the 2026 Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, themed: “Africa Forward: Partnerships between Africa and France for Innovation and Growth.”

Forissier described the summit as a success, saying the attendance surpassed expectations. According to him, organisers projected between 3,000 and 4,000 participants, but over 7,000 people attended the business forum alone, including African and French chief executives.

He said that the summit was attended by high level individuals as well as many companies providing great opportunities for business contacts to be made.

“I must say I was very impressed by the unique spirit and enthusiasm displayed throughout the summit. Real friendship was formed and wiliness to build together and I got many contacts that I will follow-up on as part of my job, so it is a success. We have investments to the tune of 23 billion euros of which the French side has 14 billion euros while for the African side, it is 9 billion euros. Some of the investment areas in Africa are; infrastructure, transport, energy, health, agriculture, food industry and digital technology and we are optimistic that in the next 20 years Africa will double its population,” he said.

The minister said that France remained committed to collaborating with African youth to build a sustainable legacy for future generations.

“We have to work and multiply the meetings and part of my job is to build partnership as we are not here to sell but by implementing these partnership that will create job opportunities and activities for both continents because it is beneficial to all parties,” he said.

Also speaking on the sidelines of the summit, President of Dangote Industries, Mr Aliko Dangote said that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery was undergoing expansion from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028.

“We are working at full capacity, the refinery is heading towards 700,000 barrels per day, currently in Nigeria, we are going to 1.4 million barrels per day which will be completed in 2028 and we are doing petrochemical expansion and others as well. Right now we have gone into deep discussions with the countries here and I am going round to see them and once we sign an agreement, this refinery of 650 thousand with a million tonnes of polypropylene will start this year. It is important for African countries to have refining infrastructure because we export 100 per cent of all our crude and then we import, so we are always at the mercy of the market and it is not good”

“What we want to make sure is to change from exporting our raw materials and importing finished goods. This is because when you export you get five to 20 per cent of the value and then end up sweating to go and import the finished product, so we want to stop that not only in refining but in many other sectors. I think for some of the countries that are not producing oil, it is very tough for them but it is not only on the oil because we have the majority which are the farmers, and now fertilizer has gone up by almost double the price,” he said.

He said that the times were currently difficult for African farmers to afford all the necessary farm inputs adding that most governments were heavily indebted and could no longer keep giving subsidies on farm inputs.

He called for a diplomatic resolution between Iran and the the United States noting that the ongoing tensions were having severe economic consequences globally.

2027: Kwankwaso hits back: ‘We never begged PRP for Presidential ticket’

Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has reacted strongly to claims by the National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, that both Kwankwaso and former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi sought the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a swift rebuttal, Kwankwaso’s political faction, the Kwankwasiyya Movement, dismissed the allegations, labelling them as a tactic by Baba-Ahmed to attract attention. Habeeb Saleh Mohammed, spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, made it clear that no such demands had been made by Kwankwaso or Obi.

Speaking during an interview with DITV Kaduna, Baba-Ahmed explained that the PRP had rejected attempts by both politicians to join the party after they allegedly sought guarantees for the presidential ticket without internal competition. He maintained that discussions broke down over these terms, as the PRP insisted that both figures adhere to its democratic processes before being considered for any electoral positions.

Baba-Ahmed said, “Before they joined, they told us they were presidential candidates, meaning they should be given the ticket. We told them no, this is PRP; we do not practice that kind of politics.”

However, Kwankwaso’s camp has denied these claims. Mohammed stated that while the PRP had publicly invited both Kwankwaso and Obi to join the party, there was never a formal meeting where the two politicians directly requested the presidential ticket.

“There was no official sitting where my principal or Peter Obi directly requested a ticket,” Mohammed clarified. He went on to question Baba-Ahmed’s motives, suggesting that the PRP chairman’s statements were designed to generate attention amid the rising profile of Kwankwaso and Obi.

The dispute comes after both politicians joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to pursue their presidential aspirations, marking a significant step in their political careers. Despite the back-and-forth, PRP’s stance remains clear: no candidate will be offered the presidential ticket without first following the party’s internal process.

Mohammed dismissed Baba-Ahmed’s remarks as unfounded and unsubstantiated, stating, “The claim that we approached them for a ticket is baseless and should not have even warranted a response.”

As Nigeria’s chief marketer attends Africa’s CEOs Forum

By Abdulaziz Abdulaziz

Marketing is too important to be left to the marketing department. — David Packard

Juene Media Group-founded Africa CEOs Forum has sealed its place as the largest private sector gathering on the continent. It has become the rendezvous where investors engage leaders, tycoons meet mandarins, big ideas find platforms, and visions chance upon lifelines. The 2026 edition, co-hosted by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC), is being held in Kigali, Rwanda, on May 14 and 15. Headlining the Forum this year are scores of juggernauts, among them six heads of government from around Africa.

As the biggest private sector assemble, the Forum is hosting over 2,800 business leaders, investors and policymakers from over 90 countries in Africa and around the world. Over 300 journalists, organisers say, are also billed to attend. There is no better place to pitch your ideas and vision!

The Africa CEOs Forum is a perfect place for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is always keen for opportunities to sell Nigeria to investors, local or international. As he concludes a similar investment-focused event in nearby Nairobi, President Tinubu arrived in Kigali on Wednesday to continue from where he had stopped in the Kenyan capital.

The words of David Packard, co-founder of tech giant Hewlett Packard, quoted as epigram to this piece, have found great accommodation in President Tinubu. Since he assumed office as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in May 2023, he has demonstrated that marketing Nigeria to the world and attracting Foreign Direct Investment are not duties to be left to bureaucrats or even exclusively in the hands of officials in charge. It is a duty for all, and most especially for him as the chief salesman of the country. The cornerstone of his administration is this sort of economic diplomacy that he takes as the sine qua non for achieving the $1 trillion economy target he had set for himself.

Indeed, in today’s interconnected world, economic diplomacy has become an important survival strategy, as salient as traditional diplomacy. Nations no longer compete only through natural resources or military strength; they compete through perception, visibility, trust, and strategic engagement. A country that does not actively tell its story risks being defined by prejudiced narratives, outdated assumptions or external constructs. This is why international engagements and strategic travels by national leaders matter.

For President Tinubu these trips are not empty junkets or ceremonial luxuries; they are opportunities to market a nation’s potential, attract investment, deepen trade partnerships, promote trust and build confidence in the economy. In a world where investors are worried about erratic leadership and political instability, investors are more likely to commit to countries whose leaders demonstrate vision, stability, accessibility, and ambition on the global stage.

No country rises globally while remaining invisible internationally. The world invests in countries it understands and trusts. Strategic communication, bilateral engagements, and economic outreach help translate national achievements into global opportunities.

Economic diplomacy is ultimately about opening doors for citizens; creating jobs, attracting capital, expanding markets for local businesses, and positioning the country as a competitive destination for innovation and enterprise. In a highly competitive global economy, visibility is not vanity; it is strategy. Nations that confidently promote themselves create stronger partnerships and accelerate national development.

This is where President Tinubu’s thoughtfulness pays up and this is why this trip to Kigali is vital for Nigeria.

The economic diplomacy prioritised by President Tinubu is about opening Nigeria to the world and opening opportunities to Nigerians. This marketing task is something he does so effortless and so passionately using sophisticated arts of marketing and advocacy. I have seen him speak to investors whether Siemens or ExxonMobil visiting him in Abuja or to a room full of Saudi investors in Riyadh. It is the same energy and candour. It is always a presentation from the heart that was as unpretentious as it was unscripted. He’d spurn out the facts and the figures, reeled out the justifications and tickle the boardroom chiefs where it matter without appearing weak or pitiable. It is a masterful combination of economic diplomacy and salesmanship at the highest level.

But it is not all talks. Even the best of marketers need good product to advertise. In this case, President Tinubu has executed much-praised reforms that have sharpened the Nigerian investment climate and make it palatable to investors.

Incentives provided to oil companies has suddenly drafted Nigeria back into choice destination for oil firms. Years of investment freeze in the sector have given ways for a boom. Last year Nigeria arractied 40% of fresh investment in deepwater and gas projects to Africa It is the same story in renewable energy and in mining, making the two areas darling of investors.

Exchange rates have been unified giving investors the assurance they need while making plans. The new tax regime has eased regulatory compliance and improved transparency in the system, making it easy to do business without fear of multiple taxation.

Nigeria today has a lot to show for these reforms. Companies that had closed shop or those who were considering exiting the uncertain climate are reconsidering their decisions. Only in January, oil giant, Shell announced a new $20 billion for the historic Bonga oil project. Mining that was comatose attracted $2.7 billion in one year alone, aside many lined-up commitments. In the same vein, sovereign fund managers and niche investors are trooping to pitch their tents in Nigeria in different sectors. This has helped in shoving up our external reserve and firming up the naira.

Like in similar outings before it, President Tinubu –who will be in a chat with with the publisher of Africa Report, Nicholas Norbrook, on the second day of the Forum in Kigaliwill use the platform to reiterate his clarion call for investors to bet on the bolder, stable ans stronger Nigerian economy.

Iran raises alarm over delayed US visas ahead Of 2026 World Cup

Iran’s football federation has said that none of its players or officials has received United States visas for the 2026 FIFA World Cup yet.

The head of the federation, Mehdi Taj, said Iran would hold an important meeting with FIFA within the next few days to get clear answers and guarantees over the visa issue.

According to him, no information has been given on who has been approved for visas so far.

Taj explained that Iranian players are expected to travel to Ankara, Turkey, for fingerprinting as part of the visa application process. However, efforts are being made to allow the process to happen in Antalya instead, to avoid extra travel.

Iran and the United States have not had diplomatic relations since 1980 after the hostage crisis that followed the Iranian Revolution.

The visa concerns are also coming after months of tension involving Iran, the United States and Israel, although a ceasefire has reportedly been in place since April.

Iran recently held a farewell ceremony for its national team ahead of the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The Iranian national team, known as Team Melli, is expected to camp in Tucson, Arizona, during the World Cup.

Iran will begin its World Cup campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15 before facing Belgium and Egypt in Group G.
