”I’m fully in the race for Oyo governorship,” Oriyomi Hamzat declares

By Ayorinde Oluokun

Popular Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat, has affirmed his determination to contest in the 2027 Oyo governorship election following his procurement of expression of interest form of Accord on Monday.

Hamzat, who is also the proprietor of Agidigbo FM radio station picked up the form at the Yemetu, Ibadan ACCORD Secretariat on Monday.

He was accompanied by large number of his supporters.

Hamzat said his decision to pick up the form for the governorship contest was in response to what many people in Oyo State have been asking him to do for months.

“Let me say it clearly — this is no longer speculation. This is no longer consultation. I am fully in the race for the governorship of Oyo State,” Hamzat said in a post on his social media handles on Tuesday.

“This decision is not about ambition for its own sake. It is about responsibility. It is about answering the call of our people who believe that governance in Oyo State can be closer, more responsive, and more humane,” he added.

The broadcaster also noted that his campaign office at Isale Alfa, Labiran Ibadan will serve as a working centre and a place where ideas will be shared, where young people will be heard, and where his movement will be coordinated from the grassroots upward.

This, according to him, was because to ensure that power flows from the streets, from the wards, from the everyday people who carry the real burden of governance.

He also said he has supported executives of ACCORD in Oyo State with a vehicle as part of his investment in the grassroots.

“If we say we believe in grassroots politics, then we must invest in it, not just talk about it,”

“I want the people of Oyo State to understand this: I am prepared and I am not coming into this race unsure. Unequivocally, I am coming in with clarity, with experience, and with the strength that comes from the people themselves,” Hamzat said.

The broadcaster also said that he is going to run a different kind of campaign: “one that listens more than it speaks, one that includes more than it excludes, and one that focuses on real issues, not empty promises.

“To my teeming supporters, every young person, every market woman, every professional, and every community leader, I want you to know that this journey is yours as much as it is mine.

“And by the grace of God, we will see it through together,” Hamzat concluded.

Effurun Killing: Apostle Suleman hails IGP Disu for dismissing killer cop

The lead pastor of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has lauded the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, for his swift action in dismissing Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman.

The police officer was caught on camera shooting and killing a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in broad daylight in Effurun, Delta State.

Suleman expressed his appreciation for IGP Disu’s decision during a Sunday service, commending the police leader for his commitment to justice. He said, “I was deeply troubled when I saw the video of the police officer extrajudicially killing a young man. However, when I learned that the IGP had dismissed the officer and ordered his prosecution, I was relieved. This is how leadership should look.”

The cleric went on to emphasize the importance of holding people accountable for their actions, saying that failure to punish wrongdoing breeds chaos. “When bad behavior goes unpunished, it becomes a norm. Leadership is about maintaining order for progress,” he added.

Suleman also highlighted the significance of a nation with a strong moral compass, stating, “Prayers can only work when the leader is good. You can’t pray for a nation under bad leadership. Now, with a good leader at the helm, prayers become powerful.”

He concluded by stressing that true transformation of a nation only happens when there are no “sacred cows” and when everyone, no matter their position, is held accountable for their actions. “Countries like those in Europe and America have order because there are consequences for every action,” Suleman stated.

2027: NDC zones presidential ticket to South Buba Galadima

Buba Galadima, a key political associate of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has revealed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region.

Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Galadima confirmed that the NDC will submit its membership register to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on May 5 or 6, marking a key step towards finalizing their electoral preparations.

“Once we do that, we are good to go,” he said confidently.

When questioned about the party’s stance on zoning and the candidate selection process, Galadima made it clear, saying, “We have zoned the party’s presidential candidature to the south. No missing votes. We’ve zoned it to the south.”

On the issue of selecting a candidate, he stated that the NDC’s immediate focus remains on holding primaries, rather than adopting a consensus candidate.

This announcement comes after Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) from southeast Nigeria, and Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano, formally joined the NDC on Sunday. Both politicians had previously exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amidst an ongoing internal crisis within the party.

Obi, who had earlier expressed dissatisfaction with ADC’s leadership, had been particularly vocal about the need for zoning, arguing that failure to address power rotation could undermine the coalition and create distrust among stakeholders. Following the ADC’s summit in Ibadan, Obi reportedly ceased attending the party’s meetings, signaling his growing discontent with the party’s direction.

The NDC’s decision to zone the presidential ticket to the south signals a significant step towards unifying its southern base, as the party looks to solidify its position ahead of the 2027 elections.

Coalition rejects alleged allocation of Kano APC Senatorial ticket slot to Shekarau

By Maduabuchi Nmeribeh/Kano

The Coalition for Better Kano has rejected the rumoured allocation of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Kano Central Senatorial ticket to former Governor of Kano state, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, who recently rejoined the APC from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Coalition comprised of Concern Kano Citizens, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Kano Axis, the National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS), and the collective body of Northern Student Stakeholders.

Addressing journalists at Kano Press Centre, Monday evening, Leader of the Coalition, Inyass Muhammad Auwal, said: “As the conscience of the youth and a major stakeholder in the Kano project, we feel compelled to address the circulating rumors regarding the potential allocation of the Kano Central Senatorial Ticket to Senator Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, following his recent return to the party.”

Inyass further stated that: “While we hold Malam Ibrahim Shekarau in high esteem as a father and elder statesman, the principles of political justice demand that loyalty must be rewarded. History and fairness should guide the party’s leadership, much like the decision regarding the gubernatorial ticket was handled with Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna–a move that ensured stability and respect for party structures.

“We wish to remind the party stakeholders of two key individuals who stood firm, sacrificed their resources, and worked tirelessly for the success of the party when it mattered most.”

The Coalition, however, hailed the emergence of Murtala Sule Garo as the Deputy Governor of the state.

According to them, “His Excellency, Murtala Sule Garo, who contested as Deputy Governor and, in a well-deserved move for equity, is set to be sworn in as Deputy Governor Tuesday .”

The Coalition, however, insisted that Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura who contested for the Kano Central Senatorial seat in the last election with immense dedication and remained a pillar of support for the party despite the outcome, deserve, “automatic ticket.”

Inyass maintained that: “With Murtala Sule Garo now settled in the executive arm, it is only natural, just, and fair that AA Zaura be given the automatic right to re-contest the Kano Central Senatorial seat.

” To bypass a loyalist who has invested so much in favor of a newcomer–regardless of their status–would send a damaging signal that the party does not value consistency or sacrifice.”

Inyass further stated that: “We have not yet heard an official statement from the Governor or the party leadership, and we hope the rumors remain just that–rumors. However, we are making this call early to ensure the right path is taken:

“To the Party Stakeholders: Do not allow for a decision that history will judge as an act of ingratitude. Let the party be seen as a platform that pays for loyalty, not one that displaces its foot soldiers for political convenience.

“To Malam Ibrahim Shekarau: We call upon you, as a father of the state, to play a paternal role. We urge you not to allow your name or influence to be used in a manner that creates a sense of injustice against those who kept the party’s light burning in your absence.”

Iran warns It may attack US forces in Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s military has warned that it could attack United States forces if they enter the Strait of Hormuz.

This comes after US President Donald Trump announced a plan to help guide ships safely through the area.

Iran said any foreign military presence in the strait must be approved by its forces. A senior Iranian commander warned that if US forces approach the waterway, they would be targeted.

Soon after the warning, Iranian media claimed that a US warship in the area was hit by missiles and forced to retreat. However, the US military denied this, saying none of its ships had been attacked.

The tension is linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. Although a ceasefire began on April 8, talks between the countries have not made progress.

President Trump said the US operation, called “Project Freedom,” is meant to help stranded ships leave the Gulf safely. He added that the US would assist ships from countries not involved in the conflict and ensure their safe passage.

Reports say US naval forces will stay near the area rather than enter the strait directly, while still protecting commercial vessels.

The US military has deployed large resources for the operation, including warships, aircraft, drones, and about 15,000 personnel.

Meanwhile, Iran has tightened control over the Strait of Hormuz, which is a key route for global oil and gas shipments. This has disrupted supply and pushed up oil prices worldwide.

There were also reports of attacks on oil tankers near the United Arab Emirates, with claims that drones were used.

Despite the rising tensions, both sides say they are still in talks. Iran says its main goal is to end the war but accuses the US of making unreasonable demands.

US officials say economic pressure is also being used against Iran, including a blockade affecting its economy.

The situation remains tense, with fears that any misstep could lead to further military conflict.

Court to rule on Sowore’s no-case submission in cyberstalking trial

Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned ruling on the no-case submission filed by activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, in his ongoing cyberstalking trial.

The trial is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations of defamatory posts against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The ruling will be delivered on May 8, 2026, after both parties adopted their final written addresses in the case, with Sowore’s counsel, Marshall Abubakar, arguing for the dismissal of the charges.

Abubakar requested that the court discharge and acquit Sowore, stating that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case.

He further argued that the DSS had not provided credible evidence to link Sowore to the alleged offences, which stemmed from social media posts in which he reportedly described Tinubu as a “criminal.”

Abubakar also criticized the prosecution for not calling key witnesses, deeming this omission a fatal flaw in its case. He urged the court to uphold the no-case submission and terminate the trial.

On the other hand, Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN), counsel for the DSS, opposed the submission. He argued that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence, including witnesses and exhibits, to establish a prima facie case and that Sowore should be ordered to enter his defence. Kehinde insisted that the charges were supported by evidence and urged the court to reject the application.

The case, which involves charges of cyberstalking and making false statements against President Tinubu, stems from two social media posts allegedly made by Sowore on August 25, 2025. The first post, made on his verified X handle (@YeleSowore), accused President Tinubu of lying about the state of corruption in Nigeria. The second post was allegedly made on Sowore’s Facebook account.

The Federal Government, through the DSS, amended the charges before Sowore’s re-arraignment on December 5, 2025, and has accused him of violating provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, and Amendment) Act, 2024. Sowore has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Umar fixed May 8, 2026, to deliver a ruling on the no-case submission.

Nigeria Immigration Service flags fraud in passport payment claims

The Nigeria Immigration Service has cautioned citizens to avoid unofficial channels when making passport payments, insisting that its application system does not involve any third-party agents.

In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, rejected claims that a religious organisation was connected to the payment process, describing such reports as inaccurate and misleading.

He explained that all passport applications are processed through a secure, government-approved platform, accessible only via the official portal: .

According to him, this portal remains the only recognised gateway for payments and processing for applicants both in Nigeria and abroad.

“The service has not authorised any religious body, private organisation or individual to act as an intermediary or receive payments on its behalf.

Akinlabi noted that anyone who visits the official portal would easily verify the credibility and transparency of the system.

He warned that websites or agents claiming to facilitate passport payments outside the approved platform were fraudulent and should be ignored.

The spokesperson disclosed that investigations had already begun to trace the origin of the allegations. Early indications, he said, point to individuals attempting to mislead the public or tarnish the agency’s image.

He added that those found responsible would face appropriate penalties.

Reaffirming the Service’s adherence to government financial regulations, Akinlabi said the NIS only partners with licensed and accredited payment service providers listed on its official platform.

He stressed that any payment made through unauthorised channels would be at the applicant’s risk, noting that the Service would not be liable for losses or inconveniences arising from such actions.

The NIS advised Nigerians to remain vigilant by using only the official portal and steering clear of unauthorised agents or third-party platforms.

“The service does not recognise or provide any alternative payment options for passport applications or related services,” he said.

Akinlabi further assured the public that measures were being strengthened to protect the integrity of the system and prevent fraud.

“For further inquiries or assistance, we advise the public to contact NIS via its verified communication channels, including its social media handles on X (Twitter), Instagram and Facebook (@nigimmigration).

“Other contact centre numbers are 09121900655, 09121556359, 09121477092 available 24/7, and WhatsApp lines 0916087800 and 09117717772,” he said.

NRC raises alarm over ‘stone attacks’ on AbujaKaduna train

By Chiazo Ogbolu

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has raised alarm on increasing attacks on its train operations along the AbujaKaduna rail corridor by suspected vandals and criminal elements.

The alarm followed the latest incident around Kilometer 177 along the AbujaKaduna rail corridor, where some persons reportedly gathered along the rail track and began pelting stones at a moving train.

The attack led to damage of the windscreen of the leading locomotive, Chief Public Relations Officer, NRC, Mr Callistus Unyimadu, said this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

While condeming the attack, Unyimadu noted in the statement that within the last two weeks, similar attacks have also been witnessed in other locations, including Gidan Busa/Sarki Gora Village, Kakau District, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, among others.

“This development is posing serious danger to railway operations, passengers and operational personnel.

“Management disclosed that similar incidents have so far been recorded in more than six locations along the corridor.

” This, thereby, worsens the already challenging and stressful operational conditions under which the corporation continues to provide essential transport services to Nigerians,” he said.

Unyimadu noted that these persistent attacks not only endangered lives and damaged critical railway infrastructure but also constituted acts of economic sabotage capable of disrupting national transportation.

He pointed out that this undermined the huge investments of the Federal Government in the railway sector.

“Despite the unfortunate development, train operations have continued with necessary safety precautions and strict operational vigilance by railway personnel who have continued to demonstrate commitment and professionalism in ensuring that passengers reach their destinations safely.

“The management of the corporation specially acknowledges the efforts and support of security operatives working tirelessly with the NRC to secure railway corridors and safeguard passengers and railway assets despite the persistent attacks.

“The corporation is currently working closely with security agencies, community leaders, and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen surveillance along the corridor, identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” he said.

He said that the Corporation called on residents and communities along railway corridors to support efforts aimed at protecting railway infrastructure by reporting suspicious activities and discouraging criminal attacks on trains and railway installations.

He said that the continuous attacks on railway operations could negatively affect smooth service delivery, if urgent collective action was not taken to curb the menace.

“The NRC remains committed to ensuring safe, secure, and efficient train operations across the country and assures passengers that every necessary measure is being taken to safeguard lives and railway assets,” he said.
