Customs hands over impounded donkey bones, skins worth ?3.94bn to NESREA in Kaduna

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Tuesday handed over donkey bones and skins worth over ?3.94 billion impounded from smugglers to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) in Kaduna.

Area Controller, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B, Kaduna, Mr Aminu Sule, handed over the confiscated animal parts to the NESREA State Coordinator, Mr. Hene Emmanuel.

The items handed over include 700 bags of donkey bones valued at ?1.86 billion and 2,500 pieces of donkey skins valued at ?2.07 billion.

The donkey parts were intercepted in separate operations by the operatives of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B unit.

Speaking at the event, Sule decried the illegal trade in donkey parts, warning that it posed serious ecological and socio-economic risks.

‘Donkeys are essential to rural communities as a source of livelihood and transport. Their indiscriminate slaughter threatens sustainable development,’ he said.

Sule emphasised the commitment of the NCS to enforcing environmental protection laws and curbing wildlife crimes, stating that FOU Zone B would not allow Nigeria to become a hub for illegal wildlife trade.

‘This seizure is a clear warning to traffickers: FOU Zone B will not relent in the fight against environmental crime,’ he added.

The Customs boss highlighted that the operation and successful handover were the outcomes of improved inter-agency cooperation, in line with the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi’s ‘Three-Point Agenda of Collaboration, Consolidation, and Innovation’.

He praised the dedication of his officers and partner agencies even as he called for increased support from the public, especially transporters, warehouse operators, and traders to report suspicious activities linked to wildlife trafficking.

Also speaking, NESREA’s State Coordinator, Mr Hene Emmanuel, commended the Customs service for its vigilance and expressed the agency’s commitment to ensuring proper environmental compliance and protection of endangered species.

Illegal trade in donkey parts, especially skins and bones, has been on the rise in recent years due to growing demand in parts of Asia.

Factional Edo LP chair blasts Peter Obi, says he lacks character to be president

A factional chairman of Labour Party in Edo State, Mrs Elizabeth Ativie, has described the party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, as a dictator who is not fit to be entrusted with power.

Ativie who leads the faction loyal to LP’s national chairman, Julius Abure, said this while addressing journalists in Benin.

She described Obi as lacking in competence, character and capacity to actualise the vision of a new Nigeria, adding that it would be dangerous to entrust Nigeria into his care.

‘The wind has blown and Nigerians have seen the true dictatorial nature of a would-have-been President of Nigeria. Peter Obi since then has been jumping from from one alliance to another and it is becoming clearer that he has shot himself politically on his feet’

‘We want to state clearly that the problem in Labour Party was created by Obi. It was him and Dr. Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State that convened the ill-fated and illegal expanded stakeholders meeting in Umuahia, on September 4, 2024 for the sole purpose of removing a legally constituted National Working Committee of the party through underhand means.

Continuing, Ativie said: ‘We want to advise Peter Obi to always inform and educate his followers properly to avoid pushing them into unnecessary problems.

‘A leader who cannot advice or guide his followers properly, can hardly be a good leader. It is even more dangerous to entrust the whole Nigeria into such one’s care.’

The Edo LP chair further alleged that after achieving over 6 million votes in the 2023 election with the huge electoral capital working for him, instead of Obi to concentrate on how to win more sympathy, structures and followers, he resorted to fighting leaders of the party

She added that after the party lost the presidential election, Obi should have called an enlarge meeting of his members, encourage them and strategize to build the party but he is started moving from one alliance to another.

She alleged that the problem that emanated from the party primary in Edo, Anambra, Plateau, Borno states, amongst others, Obi could not solve anyone before the governorship election.

‘For instance, the party leader met in Abuja including Obi and resolved that the party will choose its governorship candidate in Edo election would come from Central as other parties and should between Kenneth Imasuagbon and Sergus Ogu, but unfortunately Obi came to Edo and raised the hands of Bar. Olumede Akpata from South to our surprise.’

According to her, party politics is about leadership and that leader should be able to hold a meeting and solve issues arising from primary by bringing member together to chat the way forward.

Independence: Jonathan urges Nigerians to embrace patriotism, faith amid challenges

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful about the country’s future, despite prevailing economic and security challenges.

In his goodwill message to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Jonathan described the occasion as a time for sober reflection on the nation’s journey from colonial rule to its current struggles with development.

‘Our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey to nationhood. As we celebrate 65 years of independence, this moment offers us an opportunity to reflect on our collective journey of nation-building; on the challenges we have faced, and on the vast possibilities that still lie ahead,’ Jonathan said.

Acknowledging the realities of insecurity, economic hardship, and weak institutions, he cautioned against despair.

‘It is true that we face challenges that could test our sense of hope. Yet, as citizens, we must not lose faith. We must continue to nurture hope and sustain belief in the nation’s enormous potential and the resilience of the people.’

The former President underscored Nigeria’s strengths, pointing to its natural endowments, cultural diversity, and the ingenuity of its citizens both at home and abroad.

Jonathan urged Nigerians to embrace patriotism and unity as a compass for national rebirth.

‘Let us hold firmly to optimism and faith, knowing that the greatness of our country is within reach if we remain united and steadfast. May our nation continue to rise in strength and purpose.’

Nigeria’s hardship will soon end, best days are ahead – Ooni of Ife

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has assured Nigerians that the nation’s present economic and social difficulties will soon give way to a new dawn of progress and restoration.

Speaking on Monday in Ile-Ife shortly after moving to his ancestral home for the 2025 Olojo Festival rites, the monarch described the annual celebration as a global symbol of hope, renewal, and divine intervention.

‘This Olojo has given us a sample of appreciation. It is a global festival, a festival of thanksgiving. The day that the day comes out across the universe, we celebrate it here in the ancient city of Ile-Ife. It gives us hope that our condition as a nation is turning around,’ he told newsmen.

The Ooni, who hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts in navigating Nigeria through what he termed ‘turbulent waters,’ expressed faith that God continues to strengthen leaders in resolving disputes and stabilising governance.

‘All the hardship, difficulties, and challenges Nigerians are facing are turning around for good. Between a year and five years from now, we will begin to experience new life, and all lost glory will be restored. This is the dew of hope that change is coming,’ he declared.

Oba Ogunwusi urged Nigerians to remain patient, united, and prayerful, stressing that sustainable transformation requires resilience and collective commitment.

He reassured citizens that the economy will bounce back, while opportunities in governance, security, and development will be recovered for the benefit of all.

The monarch also charged leaders at all levels to embrace transparency and accountability, noting that only with sincerity and unity of purpose can Nigeria’s lost glory be restored.

This year’s Olojo Festival, one of the oldest and most spiritually significant festivals of the Yoruba people, drew thousands of tourists, traditional rulers, political leaders, and dignitaries from across the globe.

The festival, which symbolises the creation of the world and the emergence of daylight after primordial darkness, was marked with prayers for peace, prosperity, and stability in Nigeria.

Why we chose Mandy Kiss as ambassador – Lagos commissioner

The Lagos State Government has appointed popular content creator, Ayomiposi Oluwadahunsi, widely known as Mandy Kiss, as an ambassador for its anti-drug abuse campaign under the Lagos State Kicks Against Drug Abuse (LASKADA) initiative.

The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, announced the appointment on Tuesday, noting that the state was adopting new strategies to engage young people in the fight against substance abuse.

Ogunlende said the choice of Mandy Kiss, who commands a following of over 400,000 online, was deliberate, as her influence among young people makes her a powerful voice in reshaping narratives.

‘Drug abuse is a pandemic. We must work with those who can reach as many people as possible, and Mandy Kiss has a large followership. With the powers conferred on me, I make her one of our brand ambassadors. Say no to drugs,’ the commissioner said in a viral video.

The appointment comes weeks after the 25-year-old influencer sparked controversy by announcing plans to attempt a Guinness World Record involving intimacy with 100 men, a move that generated widespread criticism.

Speaking further, Ogunlende explained that the state government engaged Mandy Kiss in discussions, redirecting her towards a more positive role.

‘With empathy and understanding, we assessed the situation and explored healthier, more constructive paths forward. She has now embraced a purpose-driven cause, standing for something greater than herself,’ he said.

According to him, her appointment reflects transformation rather than cancellation. ‘It shows what is achievable when young individuals are met with love, guidance, and opportunities for positive growth.’

The commissioner also stressed that the Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to addressing mental health, emotional wellness, and youth development as part of its social agenda.

No religious genocide in Nigeria, Tinubu slams false allegations

President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday in Owerri, Imo State, blasted those peddling allegations of religious genocide in the country, saying no religion is under siege.

He said the allegations were unfounded and misleading, as citizens focus more on harmony and shared prosperity.

The President noted that Nigerians, after 65 years of Independence, had grown to appreciate religious and cultural differences and explore the advantages of diversity in terms of educational, economic, and other productive gains.

President Tinubu allayed fears of religious intolerance in the country at the unveiling of a book on the 10 years of the APC government in Nigeria. It was authored by the Governor of Imo State, Sen. Hope Uzodimma.

President Tinubu commissioned the Owerri-Mbaise-Umahia road, the Assumpta Twin flyover, and the Emmanuel Iwuayanwu Convention Centre.

The APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, two former APC Chairmen, Adams Oshiomhole and Umar Ganduje, governors of APC States, and the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, attended the commissioning of the projects and the book launch.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Speaker, Deputy Senate President, former Senate Presidents, Sen. Pius Anyim Pius, and Sen. Ahmad Lawan, were also at the event.

Others include the founding Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, and former Governor of Ogun State, Segun Osoba, as well as traditional and religious leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, student unions, and market associations.

President Tinubu told the crowd at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu Convention Centre: ‘Let me also say this clearly, Nigeria is a proud, sovereign nation built on the faith and resilience of its people. Here, no faith is under siege, no community is excluded. Our churches, mosques, and traditional shrines stand side by side – not as rivals, but as symbols of the unity that binds us.

‘We must never allow outsiders to tell us who we are or sow division among us. We are Nigerians, and we will stand together. Nigeria will not accept lectures from those who seek to profit from our divisions. No one loves this country more than Nigerians themselves, and no one will define us except us.

‘Our duty is to stand guard over our unity, protect every citizen, and continue to prove to the world that our diversity is not our weakness, but our strength and when Nigeria stands united, no falsehood can prosper against her. So help us God,’ he added.

On the impact of the All Progressives Congress in running Nigeria since 2015, President Tinubu said: ‘Nigeria is no longer where it was ten years ago. We promised a change, and I can confidently tell you the worst is over.

‘Ten years ago, our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), came into power on the wings of change. Nigeria was at a crossroads. A break from the old order was not only desirable; it had become inevitable to steer our nation away from collapse.

‘Under President Muhammadu Buhari, our party began stabilising Nigeria. We invested heavily in infrastructure, pushed back terrorists, and instilled accountability in public finance. Were there challenges? Yes. Were mistakes made? Yes. But no one can deny that the direction of Nigeria changed for good,’ he added.

Tinubu’s reforms restoring trust in oil industry, group insists

‘APC may not be perfect, but we are purposeful. And we will not allow Nigeria to return to the wasted years of drift,’ the President said.

‘We are not yet where we want to be, but we are no longer where we were. We are building a Nigeria that values productivity above handouts and is a nation prepared for a sustainable future.

The President has a message for the critics of the APC administration: ‘And to those who today parade themselves as prophets of solutions, let me say this: those who wasted sixteen years had their chance. Nigerians remember the broken promises, the broken power plants, the broken roads and the attempts to usurp democratic institutions using corrupt practices and subterfuge.’

President Tinubu commended Governor Uzodimma for his scholarship documenting this decade of progressive governance.

‘Hope has given Nigeria a gift: a reminder that nations must write their own stories, and leaders must account for their stewardship.’

The President stated that the outlook for the economy had improved across various indicators.

‘I am honoured to stand here in Owerri, in the heart of the South-East, a land of industry, intellect, and resilience. I know there were times when this region felt left out. But under Renewed Hope, no part of Nigeria will be abandoned. The South-East is not on the margins; you are at the centre of our national rebirth.

‘Believing in true federalism and decentralisation, I have created regional development commissions to bring progress closer to the people. Nigerians have the right to hold leaders at every level (federal, state, and local) accountable. And as leaders, we have the duty to deliver,’ he added.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, thanked the President for the initiative of NELFUND, which had encouraged more underprivileged children to pursue their education in higher institutions.

‘Mr President, you have given hope to many young people through the Education funds you provide. You have invested in agriculture to provide food for millions of Nigerians.

‘On behalf of the entire National Assembly, we want to congratulate the performing governor,’ the Senate President said.

The Governor of Imo State, who is also the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, stated that the sub-national governments had consistently received increased allocations, enabling infrastructure construction and improving sectors such as education and health.

‘Mr President, we are grateful for your support. It is through your courage and bold policies that our economy is stabilised today. Most of the projects we undertake in Imo are made possible by the continuous funding we receive from time to time.

‘Your consistency in the political trajectory of Nigeria made it possible for the formation of APC, which became a force in the build-up to the 2015 elections. This inspired me to document all these remarkable efforts into a book titled ‘A Decade of Leadership in Nigeria’.

Prof. Benett Chima Nwanguma reviewed the book.

FIFA U20 World Cup: Narrow defeat for Nigeria as Flying Eagles target redemption against Saudi Arabia

The Flying Eagles were unlucky to lose 0-1 to Norway in their opening match of the 24th FIFA U20 World Cup finals on Monday despite dominating play and creating a hatful of chances, particularly in the second period.

Norway went ahead after they were awarded a contested penalty in the 9th minute, but the Flying Eagles fought hard to redeem things, only to be denied penalty awards on two occasions in the second half.

Kparobo Arierhi’s left-footed shot inside the box drifted just wide in the 47th minute, with the goalkeeper completely beaten, and in the 63rd minute, Tahir Maigana’s left-footed shot inside the box was stopped by the base of the upright.

The two-time silver medallists launched onslaught after onslaught against the Europeans, but Norway had too many players behind the ball in the box and foiled dozens of attempts.

In the 71st minute, the crowd rose to cheer the equalizer, but midfielder Nasiru Salihu’s rising shot from the right rose a little too high, beating the goalkeeper and the crossbar.

Seven minutes from time, the tireless Tahir Maigana cocked the trigger from afar, only to see his effort miss the target narrowly.

The Flying Eagles will take on Saudi Arabia in their second match of the competition on Thursday.

Lagos sues House of Reps over Gaming Bill, alleges Contempt of Supreme Court

The Lagos State Government has filed contempt proceedings against the National Assembly, accusing lawmakers of defying a Supreme Court judgment on the regulation of lotteries and gaming in Nigeria.

Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing marking his second year in office.

Pedro recalled that in a landmark decision, the Supreme Court had ruled that lotteries and games of chance fall within the residual legislative powers of states, not the Federal Government.

The judgment, he said, affirmed the constitutional authority of Lagos and other states to regulate and generate revenue from gaming activities, thereby strengthening fiscal federalism.

Despite this clear pronouncement, Pedro noted that members of the House of Representatives recently passed a Central Gaming Bill, which seeks to bring lotteries and gaming under federal control.

He said the move was not only unconstitutional but also in direct violation of the apex court’s declaratory and injunctive orders.

‘The National Assembly, being bound by the decisions of the Supreme Court like every other person and authority in Nigeria, cannot enact a law on a subject already determined as outside its legislative competence,’ Pedro stated.

‘For this reason, Lagos State has approached the courts to initiate contempt proceedings against the National Assembly,’ he added.

The Attorney-General described the development as an affront to the rule of law, warning that allowing such acts to stand would undermine constitutional governance and judicial authority.

Beyond the gaming dispute, Pedro highlighted achievements of the Ministry of Justice over the past two years, including improved legal advisory services to government ministries and the successful prosecution of high-profile cases such as the conviction of Andrew Nice for the rape and murder of BRT passenger Oluwabamise Ayanwola.

He stressed that Lagos remains committed to upholding justice, protecting state revenues, and defending the constitutional principle of true federalism.
