Honda targets hybrid EV leadership in the Thai market

Honda Automobile (Thailand) is intensifying its strategy to challenge the Chinese-dominated electric vehicle (EV) market, announcing plans to make next-generation hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) the cornerstone of its lineup.

By 2029, the Japanese automaker expects nearly 90% of the cars it sells in Thailand to be HEVs, aiming to counter the rapid rise of Chinese battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which dominate the market.

Honda wants to promote its “e:HEV” technology, which combines an electric motor with a petrol engine that can switch between generating electricity and powering the wheels.

Honda president and chief executive Koji Iwanami said the system offers significant advantages, including automatic recharging while driving and reduced fuel consumption, making it a cost-effective alternative to BEVs.

“Honda expects the e:HEV to outperform BEVs. These HEVs will help Japanese car makers gain market share in Thailand from Chinese BEVs,” Mr Iwanami said.

The company recently introduced four new Honda City models in Thailand: the e:HEV RS, e:HEV SV, e:HEV V and VTEC Turbo. Honda projects sales of 40,000 units over one year, with 31,000 already sold between January and May 2026.

Honda targets total car sales of 76,000 units in Thailand this year, while the domestic market is expected to total 660,000 units.

Globally, Honda announced plans to cut the cost of its next-generation hybrid systems by more than 30% compared with previous versions, allowing the company to produce vehicles locally at competitive prices, directly challenging Chinese BEVs.

“Honda’s car prices should be more attractive to customers who want new technology but not BEVs,” Mr Iwanami said.

The company also urged the Thai government to extend local content requirements, currently applied to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, to BEVs, ensuring that more than 90% of components are sourced domestically.

The automaker reaffirmed its commitment to Thailand as a key Southeast Asian hub, with its Prachinburi plant, built with a 17-billion-baht investment following the 2011 Ayutthaya floods, serving as a central manufacturing and export base.

Shun Kuroda, chief officer for sales and services at Honda Automobile (Thailand), emphasised the company’s focus on the B-segment subcompact market, citing its affordability, efficiency and versatility.

He said Honda continues to invest in BEV technology alongside hybrids.

Looking ahead, Honda forecasts that HEVs will capture 52% of Thailand’s car market by 2029, followed by BEVs at 33%, ICE vehicles at 13%, and other technologies at 2%.

African-led transnational drug ring busted

Loei couple suspected of heroin links questioned in Bangkok

A Thai man and his Laotian wife were brought to Bangkok from Loei on Friday for questioning by narcotics investigators, who are trying to shed light on a network linked to the heroin carried by a Thai Airways International flight attendant who was arrested in Melbourne.

The couple have not been charged and are being treated only as suspects involved in the dispatching process of the heroin to the flight attendant, who has been identified only as Meena, said Areepak Ngernbamroong, spokeswoman for the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB).

Police and ONCB investigators questioned the couple – identified only as Arthit, 43, and Thatsaphon, 42 – in Loei on Thursday. Mr Arthit told them that he had been hired to send parcels from Laos on six occasions to Bangkok, the latest one on June 28. He also said he acted alone, and his wife denied any links to the packages and deliveries.

Authorities suspected that the couple could possibly be linked to a cell of a drug syndicate sending narcotics to clients in Thailand.

The flight attendant was arrested on June 25 at Melbourne Airport with more than one kilogramme of heroin with an estimated street price of A$500,000 (11.5 million baht).

Earlier reports said that Ms Meena had agreed on a fee of 8,800 baht with the person who had contacted her about carrying 12 elephant-print tote bags to Australia.

However, investigators on Friday said financial records showed that she received 3,400 baht – a 1,700-baht deposit and another 1,700 baht on the day of her flight.

Meanwhile, police have traced a 59-year-old driver who delivered the parcel containing the tote bags – two of which had heroin packets sewn into them – to Ms Meena’s condominium building in Bang Na on June 22.

The driver, from Ayutthaya, told police he was hired by a foreign-looking man who accompanied him during the delivery, according to local media reports.

Police have seized the driver’s car for forensic examination.

Court jails eight for illegal surrogacy

The Criminal Court has sentenced four obstetricians and four brokers to prison terms of up to 15 years for their roles in a transnational commercial surrogacy network, ruling that they treated the human body as a commodity and deliberately circumvented the law.

The Criminal Court on Ratchadaphisek Road on Thursday delivered its verdict in the second case arising from a cross-border commercial surrogacy operation. Prosecutors charged 10 defendants, including Lt Col Dr Chanin Asawataret, with participating in a transnational criminal organisation, arranging commercial surrogacy, and illegally importing or exporting embryos, sperm and human eggs.

The case stemmed from a 2020 investigation by the Anti-Human Trafficking Division, which dismantled a surrogacy network allegedly financed by Chinese national Ran Zhao. The syndicate recruited Thai women to become surrogate mothers or sell their eggs for in-vitro fertilisation.

Investigators said the women were paid 400,000-450,000 baht each and taken to Laos and Cambodia for embryo implantation to circumvent Thailand’s ban on commercial surrogacy. They then returned to Thailand for prenatal care before travelling to China shortly before giving birth.

According to investigators, Dr Chanin played a key role by preparing sperm samples and performing embryo implantation procedures. Police also arrested a Thai female broker who handled financial transactions, tracing more than 70 international money transfers linked to the network.

In its ruling, the court said the four obstetricians and gynaecologists knew commercial surrogacy and the sale of human eggs violated both the law and medical ethics, yet deliberately carried out the procedures abroad to evade Thai law.

The court also found that the four brokers played key roles in the operation, harming the rights and welfare of children born through the scheme by separating them from their biological families and exposing them to potential long-term psychological harm.

The court convicted the doctors and brokers on multiple counts. Although it reduced their sentences by one-quarter because they cooperated, it imposed lengthy prison terms because of the seriousness of the offences.

Dr Chanin, whom the court identified as the ringleader among the medical professionals, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The other three doctors received sentences of 13 years, 13 years and six months, and 10 years and six months.

The four brokers received prison terms of 13 years and six months, 10 years and six months, seven years and six months, and four years and six months. The court acquitted two other defendants.

The case is separate from the prosecution of Ran Zhao and three associates, who pleaded guilty to operating the surrogacy ring. They were each sentenced to 150 years in prison, later reduced to 75 years because of their guilty pleas.

Five officials probed over exam cheating

Five officials from the Department of Local Administration (DLA) have been put under disciplinary investigation in connection with the recent local government recruitment exam fraud, Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Thursday.

Welcoming the completion of a ministry investigation a week after it was ordered, Mr Anutin said the investigation committee, led by the ministry’s deputy permanent secretary, Santitorn Yimlamai, had confirmed attempts to falsify and cheat in the recruitment examination.

“I will reveal details as much as possible without exploiting the case or interfering with evidence collected from the investigation,” Mr Anutin said.

The scandal involves widespread cheating discovered in exams organised last year by the DLA, part of the Interior Ministry overseen by Mr Anutin, to recruit nearly 7,000 local administrative officials.

Thousands of participants are said to have paid between 350,000 and 800,000 baht each to ensure they passed the exams. This in turn led to the arrest of 10 people, mostly civil servants, who were caught red-handed with doctored exam results.

According to Mr Santitorn, the investigation committee summoned 15 individuals for questioning, with some submitting clarification documents.

It is also gathering as many records as possible from related parties and has sought input from technological experts.

The initial probe confirmed that contractors did not transfer checked answer sheet files to the DLA as soon as they obtained them from 10 examination locations.

Mr Santitorn added that 48 of the 79 sample sheets stored on thumb drives collected from the DLA showed mismatched scores between the answer sheets and the processed score listings, with more than half having scores in both sections of the test altered to significantly higher results.

The findings showed the DLA had failed to conduct a reverse check against the listings for candidates who passed the test’s third section, a positional exam hosted by respective agencies, after receiving the results of the other two sections.

Mr Santitorn said that some information was altered before it was submitted to an official test announcement platform.

The investigation revealed that DLA officers, contractors and private companies were involved in the test falsification network, with at least five DLA officers expected to be charged with disciplinary violations, Mr Santitorn added.

The House Committee on Decentralisation and Local Administration on Thursday invited representatives of the relevant agencies to a meeting to discuss the exam fraud, but Srinakharinwirot University (SWU), which administered the exams, did not send anyone.
