LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has announced that his government has successfully procured 200,000 metric tons of maize from Zambia as part of its comprehensive food security strategy.

He said the maize will be distributed for free to four million Malawians who are currently facing hunger across various parts of the country.

The President made the announcement during his address in Parliament on Friday, 31st October 2025, where he outlined key priorities of his administration for the coming months.

According to Mutharika, this initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to ensure that no Malawian goes hungry, especially during the current period of food shortages caused by erratic weather patterns and reduced crop yields.

He emphasized that the free maize distribution program demonstrates his administration’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable citizens and ensuring equitable access to essential food supplies.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has announced a significant boost to the Community Development Fund (CDF), raising it from MK220 million to MK5 billion, in a renewed effort to spur local development and improve livelihoods across Malawi.

Speaking during the state opening of the 52nd session of Parliament, Mutharika emphasized that the new allocation will directly empower the country’s youth and women two groups he described as “the backbone of Malawi’s social and economic transformation.”

He added that under the revised program, each district will receive MK100 million for youth loans, aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs, creating jobs, and reducing unemployment.

Additionally, another MK100 million per district will be allocated for women’s empowerment initiatives, focusing on boosting small-scale businesses, agricultural ventures, and other income-generating activities.

“We want every young person and every woman in Malawi to have an opportunity to succeed,” said Mutharika. “Our goal is to ensure that no one is left behind in the journey toward development.”

The President also addressed the ongoing challenges surrounding passport issuance, assuring Malawians that the long-standing delays and irregularities will soon be resolved.

He announced that passport printing will resume in Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu, marking a major step toward restoring efficiency and transparency in government services.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawians are set to benefit from the government’s Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP), with each fertilizer bag to be purchased at only MK10,000, President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has announced.

Speaking during the official opening of the 52nd Session of Parliament in Lilongwe, President Mutharika said the initiative aims to support smallholder farmers and boost national food security.

The President revealed that over four million Malawians have been affected by recent disasters, including dry spells and floods, which have severely impacted agricultural production.

“To ensure that no Malawian goes hungry, my government has procured 200,000 metric tonnes of maize from Zambia,” said Mutharika. “We remain committed to supporting our farmers through the AIP so that they can recover and produce more in the coming season.”

The Affordable Inputs Programme has been a key government strategy to make fertilizer and improved seeds accessible to low-income farmers, thereby enhancing food production and reducing dependency on food aid.

9-1-1: Nashville found a way to honor actress Isabelle Tate after her death at age 23.

The hit ABC series ended the Thursday, October 30, episode with an in memoriam message that read, “In loving memory. Izzy Tate 2002 – 2025.”

Earlier this month, Tate appeared in the 9-1-1: Nashville series premiere as a girl who attended the club where Blue (Hunter McVey) danced as a stripper before becoming a firefighter. Her death was announced weeks later following her battle with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

“Isabelle was full of fire, a fighter, never once making excuses for the fact that she might have a disability relative to others,” read her obituary. “She was also quite musically inclined, often spending hours writing and recording songs with friends and even publishing a few. What she loved the most though was spending time with family and friends, always the life of the party. Her sister was her best friend and her mom was her shining beacon of light.”

A rep for Tate reflected on the actress’ death in a separate statement.

“I’ve known Izzy since she was a teenager and she recently returned to acting. She booked the first series she auditioned for, 9-1-1 Nashville. I was so lucky to know her and she will be greatly missed by so many.”

After news broke of Tate’s death, McVey, 26, spoke out about his experience working with her on 9-1-1: Nashville.

“I was shocked to hear the news,” McVey said in a statement. “I didn’t know Isabelle prior to filming, but I couldn’t have asked for someone better to work with on one of my first ever days on set.”

McVey recalled how Tate brightened his time on set, adding, “I was terrified, nervous, and after each take we would get to exchange a couple words which were always supportive from her. I [had] the pleasure of talking with her after the scene and she had such a great energy.”

He continued: “You could tell she brought joy to a lot of people. I’m thankful I got a chance to work with Isabelle and that a part of her will live on forever in the pilot episode of 9-1-1 Nashville. Prayers for her family.”

Tate previously opened up about her health issues after being diagnosed with a progressive neuromuscular disease when she was 13.

“I don’t usually get vulnerable on this app, but l feel like this is something I have to share that’s been going on in my life. When I was 13, I got diagnosed with a progressive neuromuscular disease that weakens my leg muscles over time,” she wrote via Instagram in 2022. “When I was first diagnosed, I couldn’t fully understand what it was or grasp what it could be. Over the years, I was going on with my life and would notice little things get more difficult for me, but not so much where it stood out to me significantly.”

Tate’s condition “really progressed” before her death.

“I’ve come to terms that if I want to live my life to the fullest I need to use a wheelchair at times. This has been a difficult journey for me because having to accept help and surrender to the progression of this condition has been extremely hard,” she continued. “I would have never expected something like this to happen to me, as most of us wouldn’t. I don’t know why these were the cards I was dealt in life, but I can’t change it so I’m choosing to embrace it and not let it define me.”

She concluded: “This has really changed my perspective on life, and if I’ve learned anything from this it’s to appreciate the little things that are easily taken for granted. You really never know what someone else is going through, so please always be kind and compassionate.”

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has commended President Arthur Peter Mutharika for appointing a new Cabinet in accordance with Section 94 (1) of the Constitution, describing the move as an important step toward ensuring leadership continuity and stability during a critical phase of national transition.

In its statement,signed by NAP chairperson Benodicto Kondowe and National Coordinator Baxton Nkhoma, NAP observed that the newly constituted Cabinet demonstrates a deliberate effort to balance political experience with technical expertise, a combination that has the potential to enhance policy coordination and promote governance effectiveness.

The organization, however, underscored the need for the new administration to anchor its operations in integrity, reform and service delivery to rebuild public confidence and advance inclusive national progress.

While acknowledging the appointment of capable figures such as First Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah, NAP expressed concern that women, youth and persons with disabilities remain underrepresented in the new Cabinet.

The platform noted that the composition falls short of the national commitments outlined in the Gender Equality Act (2013), the National Youth Policy and the Disability Act (2012), as well as the inclusivity aspirations embedded in Malawi 2063.

Despite commendable individual appointments, the organization said the overall picture remains imbalanced and urged the government to pursue deliberate and progressive inclusion of marginalized groups not only within the Cabinet but also across public institutions, parastatals and diplomatic missions.

The advocacy body further acknowledged President Mutharika’s effort to rationalize the Cabinet to 21 ministers in addition to the President and two Vice Presidents, describing this as a positive step toward fiscal discipline.

However, NAP emphasized that “Malawi’s constrained fiscal space and increasing public debt demand even greater prudence. A more compact Cabinet, it said, would have signaled stronger fiscal restraint and a commitment to efficient governance”.

The grouping urged the administration to prioritize frontline sectors such as education, health and agriculture, where investments directly impact citizens’ welfare and the nation’s long-term development.

NAP also commended the establishment of strategic portfolios, including Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism and Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, saying these could play a vital role in driving economic recovery and structural transformation if managed with policy coherence, inter-ministerial collaboration and transparency.

It added that economic planning must remain data-driven and aligned with the Malawi 2063 vision, while decentralisation should empower local authorities rather than centralize power.

The platform noted that the new Cabinet assumes office at a time when the country is facing rising inflation, high youth unemployment, food insecurity and the impacts of climate change.

It urged the administration to focus on evidence-based decision-making, performance monitoring, and measurable outcomes rather than political allegiance.

NAP also welcomed the President’s commitment to introducing monthly ministerial performance assessments and one-page progress reports but stressed that these mechanisms must be genuinely implemented.

The organization called for such reports to be made publicly available in line with the Access to Information Act, ensuring transparency and enabling citizens and Parliament to monitor progress.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Referees Committee has cleared referee Mwayi Msungama of any wrongdoing following a review of key incidents during the recent TNM Super League encounter between FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium.

This decision comes after Silver Strikers lodged an official complaint challenging two major decisions made by the referee – the awarding of a penalty to Bullets and the disallowing of a goal for Silver.

In a statement released by the Super League of Malawi (SULOM), the Referees Committee confirmed that both decisions were consistent with the Laws of the Game.

The Committee determined that the referee’s decisions were in line with the rules, dismissing Silver’s complaints.
