DODOMA-(MaraviPost)-Amnesty International has issued a strong call to the government of Tanzania to immediately end what it describes as an “unacceptable campaign of repression against dissent” ahead of the country’s upcoming general election.

The human rights organization says it is deeply concerned about the deteriorating political and civic environment as Tanzanians prepare to go to the polls on October 29.

According to Amnesty, the Tanzanian government has intensified its clampdown on the opposition, the media, and human rights defenders in recent months.

The group reports that state authorities have used restrictive laws, intimidation, and politically motivated prosecutions to silence critical voices and suppress open political debate.

Central to Amnesty’s concern is the ongoing treason trial of Tundu Lissu, the outspoken leader of the opposition CHADEMA party.

Lissu, who has long been a vocal critic of government corruption and human rights abuses, faces charges that many observers believe are politically motivated.

The organization also highlighted the disqualification of opposition presidential candidate Luhaga Mpina, which it described as another example of the government’s deliberate efforts to narrow the political space.

Amnesty International believes these actions are not isolated incidents but part of a calculated strategy to instill fear among citizens and prevent meaningful civic participation.

The group warns that this growing repression threatens to erode Tanzania’s democratic foundations and entrench authoritarian rule under the guise of electoral legitimacy.

The organization insists that the rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and association must be respected and that all candidates should be allowed to campaign freely and fairly.

Reese Witherspoon tried to help Mindy Kaling find love — but she’s not in the market for a significant other.

“I don’t go on the apps. One time, once very pretty recently, Reese Witherspoon wanted to set me up with somebody and I didn’t even look to see who it was,” Kaling, 46, shared during an interview with Bustle, published on Tuesday, October 21. “I didn’t laugh in her face because I love her and I love that she was thinking of me in that way, but I just thought it’s not time.”

Her laughter was more at the idea of “doing my hair and putting on makeup and getting out there,” above anything else.

“I have three kids under the age of 7, so for me to want to leave them, especially when I travel for work a lot,” Kaling continued. “I’m very happy. I work with so many men and I love romance, but it’s interesting how all those things can be true and you can decide that you’re like, ‘I’m fine.’”

Kaling does see the irony, however.

Kaling is a mom to three kids: Katherine, 7, Spencer, 5, and Anne, 20 months. She hasn’t publicly shared any details about their father — although fans have speculated that it’s her longtime friend and ex B.J. Novak.

“It doesn’t bother me,” she told Marie Claire in August 2022 about the rumors. “He’s the godparent to both my kids — and they have such a great relationship.”

She explained that the speculation didn’t impact her happiness.

“It hasn’t affected my kids or B.J.,” Kaling added. “If that’s what is going to be titillating to people, I’ll take it.”

Kaling explained that she’s waiting until her kids are “old enough to talk about it” before discussing her fertility journey publicly.

“I’m the only parent my kids have,” she shared. “I think I err on the side of super cautious so that there’s less things that they can potentially be mad at me about down the line.”

“I will freely admit: My relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell,” Kaling said in 2015. “He is not my boyfriend, but he is not my best friend. I guess you could describe our relationship as a ‘romantically charged camaraderie with loud arguments,’ but I don’t think Facebook would accept this as a new status.”

Chess grandmaster and prodigy Daniel Naroditsky has died unexpectedly at the age of 29. 

The news was announced by Naroditsky’s family on Monday, October 20, in a statement released by the Charlotte Chess Center. 

“It is with great sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Daniel Naroditsky,” the statement read. “Daniel was a talented chess player, commentator, and educator, and a cherished member of the chess community, admired and respected by fans and players around the world. He was also a loving son and brother, and a loyal friend to many.”

The statement continued, “We ask for privacy for Daniel’s family during this extremely difficult time. Let us remember Daniel for his passion and love for the game of chess, and for the joy and inspiration he brought to us all every day.”

A cause of death has yet to be released. 

Naroditsky rose to prominence in 2007 when he won the under-12 boys world youth championship.

He earned the title of grandmaster — the international chess federation’s highest-ranked chess competitor — after winning the 2013 US Junior Championship when he was 17.

After attending Stanford University, Naroditsky had been working as a chess coach in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Naroditsky was credited with bringing chess to a younger, more modern audience through his popular Twitch and YouTube channels, the latter of which has nearly 500k subscribers. 

He last posted on YouTube on Friday, October 17, uploading a video called “You Thought I Was Gone!? Speedrun Returns!” 

Naroditsky became The New York Times’ chess columnist in 2022, when he helped explain his love and obsession for the game. 

“You need extreme patience,” he said, “because, more so than in any other game, you’re going to suck for a while.”

He added, “I don’t know if this is a personality trait, but if you want to get good at the game, you have to have the willingness to do the same thing over and over and over again. You have to be very goal-oriented because of that. Sometimes, all that sustains you is knowing where you want to be.”

Despite being one of the world’s best, Naroditsky explained how chess still found ways to constantly challenge him.

“Even at my level,” he told the Times, “I can still discover beautiful things about the game every single time I train, teach, play or am a commentator at a tournament.”

Naroditsky’s death was felt massively by members throughout the chess community, including the No. 2 ranked player in the world, Hikaru Nakamura. 

“When it came to making chess content to help beginners, his was the best,” Nakamura, 37, told the BBC. “I have played more than a thousand games of chess with Daniel. Chess is a very cut-throat world and emotions run high, but Daniel was always calm.”

Nakamura said Naroditsky’s popular online presence “wasn’t about the money for him.”

“He had a true passion for the game,” he gushed. 

20-year-old British chess player Zara Graham credited Naroditsky for getting her into the game. 

“Even though I never met him in person I was absolutely devastated to hear the news,” Graham told the BBC. “I actually cried when I found out. He was a brilliant chess teacher who inspired me to start playing when I was 14. He explained things in his YouTube videos so that everyone could understand.”

Graham added, “He made an impact on thousands of people around the world.”
