Chaos at Kasarani as one killed during Raila Odinga’s final farewell

….A sombre farewell to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga turns tragic as chaos erupts at Kasarani Stadium, leaving one person dead and several injured.

NAIROBI-(MaraviPost)-What was meant to be a day of unity and national mourning turned tragic as chaos broke out at Kasarani Stadium during the final farewell of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

Thousands of mourners had gathered early in the morning to pay their last respects to the late statesman, whose body lay in state under tight military guard.

The atmosphere was emotional but peaceful until tension suddenly erupted in the stands as rival groups of supporters clashed over seating arrangements and access to restricted areas.

Witnesses reported that the situation quickly escalated when some mourners attempted to force their way closer to the VIP section where dignitaries and family members were seated.

Police officers and military personnel tried to restore order, but the pushing and shouting intensified, resulting in a stampede.

In the ensuing chaos, several people were trampled, and one person was later confirmed dead while others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as heartbreaking, with mourners screaming and paramedics struggling to reach those in distress amid the confusion.

Security officials were seen cordoning off parts of the stadium as the ceremony was briefly halted to allow emergency response teams to manage the situation.

Despite the disruption, the state funeral resumed after calm was restored, with religious leaders calling for peace and respect as the nation mourned one of its greatest political figures.

President William Ruto, who attended the ceremony alongside regional leaders, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and called for an investigation into what went wrong with crowd control measures.

“This is a day of remembrance, not pain,” he said solemnly, adding that Raila Odinga’s legacy should unite the country rather than divide it.

Family members of the late Odinga were visibly shaken by the turn of events but urged mourners to remain calm and honour his memory with dignity and peace.

Analysts have since raised concerns about crowd management during national events, especially when emotions run high among supporters.

They say the tragedy at Kasarani underscores the need for improved coordination between security forces, event organizers, and emergency services during high-profile state occasions.

As evening fell, the body of Raila Odinga was airlifted to his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County, where burial preparations were underway.

For many Kenyans, the chaos at Kasarani left a painful scar on what was meant to be a moment of collective grief and national pride.

Raila Odinga, remembered for his decades-long fight for democracy and social justice, was laid to rest the following day amid tears, prayers, and tributes from across Africa.

The tragic events at his farewell serve as a reminder of both his unmatched ability to inspire deep loyalty—and the urgent need for peace and discipline even in moments of national emotion.

Jennifer Lopez Regrets Turning Down an Oscar-Nominated Role: ‘It Haunts Me’

Jennifer Lopez is sharing her biggest acting regret — turning down a movie that earned another actress an Oscar nomination.

“[Director] Adrian Lyne offered me Unfaithful,” Lopez told Howard Stern in an interview on Wednesday, October 15, referring to the 2002 erotic thriller starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane.

Lopez, 56, said she turned down the film because “the script wasn’t good” initially, adding that Lyne “then made it great.”

“And Diane Lane got nominated for the Oscar,” the actress and singer said with a laugh.

What Jennifer Lopez Has Said About Love and Romance

Stern, 71, asked Lopez, “Is that hard to live with?”

“It’s funny. It haunts me,” Lopez admitted. “It haunts me a little bit, because it’s, like, the one that I turned down. It was just like, ‘Why did you turn down working with Adrian Lyne? What were you thinking?’ I don’t know what was going on in my mind at the time. Who knows what was going on with me at the time?”

Lane, 60, earned critical acclaim for her portrayal of Constance “Connie” Sumner, who cheats on her husband, Edward Sumner, played by Gere. Lane received a Best Actress nomination at the 2003 Academy Awards, however, she lost the Oscar to Nicole Kidman for her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours. Salma Hayek, Julianne Moore and Renée Zellweger were also nominated that year.

Despite missing out on Unfaithful, Lopez would go on to work with Gere in the 2004 musical comedy Shall We Dance?

Jennifer Lopez’s Dating History: A Timeline of Her Famous Relationships

Lopez also candidly opened up about her love life during her Wednesday appearance on SiriusXM’s Howard Stern Show.

“Do you think you’ve truly been loved?” Stern asked the star.

After pausing to consider her answer, Lopez replied, “No.”

“What I learned, it’s not that I’m not lovable — it’s that they’re not capable. … They don’t have it in them,” she explained. “And they gave me what they had. They gave me all of it, every time. All the rings, all the things I could ever want. The houses, the rings, the marriage. All of it.”

Lopez admitted she “didn’t love” herself, which complicated her four marriages, including her most recent union with Ben Affleck. (The couple finalized their divorce in January.)

“When I got divorced this last time, it was the best thing that ever happened to me,” Lopez said. “Because it really made me journey into — I mean, I had a religious coach, I had a therapist, a couples therapist, an individual therapist, I had a coach to understand addiction. I had everything. I was like, ‘I’m gonna fing figure this s out if it kills me.’”

Despite her split from Affleck, the actor and director recently supported Lopez at the New York City premiere of her new movie, Kiss of a Spider Woman, which was produced by his production company, Artists Equity.

“She’s fabulous. And it’s an enormously difficult — it’s all these masters, so it’s not edited in such a way where you can make a little mistake here and there in the dance,” Affleck praised Lopez on the red carpet in an interview with E! News. “It’s singing and dancing and acting and also trying to hold together these multiple tones in the movie. That’s just probably the maximum level of difficulty for a performer.”

Timverane Club shines in FCB Kupha Makwacha promo

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Members of Timverane Club, a grouping of Tobacco farmers in the country, can now afford a smile after emerging winners of the FCB Kupha Makwacha Promotion grand prize.

The Club won a brand-new motorcycle through a grand draw the Bank conducted on Monday in Blantyre.

The promotion, which started in May and ended in August, targeted tobacco farmers across the country who bank with FCB as one way of supporting and developing tobacco farming.

Speaking after the final draw, FCB Marketing Manager Pachalo Stanley Chiyora said the Bank, as a strong supporter of farming in Malawi, introduced the promotion to assist tobacco farmers while contributing to the growth of the national economy.

“Tobacco farming is known as the backbone of Malawi’s economy, and as a Bank, we introduced this promotion to assist farmers in their day-to-day activities. It was a way of motivating them while also giving back to them as our valued customers,” said Chiyora.

He further emphasized that the Bank remains committed to providing better services to tobacco farmers and fostering continued development in the tobacco farming industry.

“We are happy with the level of participation we saw from farmers. Going forward, we will continue to support them and look into more ways to strengthen our partnership when we return next year,” said Chiyora.

ESCOM, MISA Malawi introduce annual Anti-Vandalism Media Award

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited has partnered with the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi Chapter to unveil a new media award aimed at fighting the growing problem of electricity infrastructure vandalism in the country.

The initiative, dubbed the ‘ESCOM Anti-Vandalism Media Award’, aims to encourage in-depth and solution-oriented journalism on the effects of infrastructure vandalism on Malawi’s economic growth and public safety.

Set to begin on November 1 this year, the award will recognize outstanding reporting in Print, Electronic, and Online Media categories.

Each winner will walk away with a cash prize of K1 million, a move designed to both reward excellence and inspire sustained coverage of this pressing issue.

Speaking during the launch, Pilirani Phiri, ESCOM’s Chief Public Relations and Communications Officer, said the award showcases the corporation’s commitment to addressing vandalism through collaboration with the media.

“Vandalism of ESCOM infrastructure is not just a commercial challenge for us; it is a direct attack on Malawi’s future, causing blackouts that stall economic activity and disrupt critical services. This award is a powerful statement of our commitment to fighting this scourge and strengthening media partnerships as a foundation for national progress,” said Phiri.

Echoing the sentiment, Golden Matonga, Chairperson of MISA Malawi, hailed the partnership as a timely and strategic collaboration that empowers journalists to use their platforms for the public good.

“We are delighted to partner with ESCOM on this vital public interest initiative. The award recognizes the media’s indispensable role in public sensitization and accountability. It is a meaningful incentive for journalists to dedicate their skills to a subject of such national importance,’’ said Matonga.

According to the organizers, eligible stories will include those published or broadcast between November 1, 2025, and April 30, 2026.

Winners are set to be honoured during the annual MISA Malawi Media Awards ceremony in May 2026.

Both ESCOM and MISA Malawi have called on journalists and media houses across the country to take advantage of the competition period to explore and expose the root causes, consequences, and possible solutions to infrastructure vandalism.
