Saliba commits future to Arsenal with new deal

LONDON-(MaraviPost)-Arsenal have received a massive boost in their long-term project after French defender William Saliba signed a new five-year contract, keeping him at the Emirates Stadium until 2030.

The 23-year-old, widely regarded as one of the best young centre backs in world football, had verbally agreed to extend his stay last week.

The deal has now been officially completed, ending speculation over his future.

Saliba’s decision to commit comes despite growing interest from top European clubs including Real Madrid, who were reportedly preparing to make a move for him in 2026.

His choice reflects his belief in Arsenal’s project and his desire to be a key figure in the club’s pursuit of trophies.

Since breaking into the Arsenal first team, Saliba has transformed the defence, providing both stability and confidence at the back.

His partnership with Gabriel Magalhães has been the cornerstone of Mikel Arteta’s side, earning praise from pundits and fans alike.

Saliba has also become a fan favourite at the Emirates, admired for his composure on the ball, strength in duels and leadership qualities despite his young age.

His performances last season played a vital role in Arsenal’s title push and their return to the UEFA Champions League.

Speaking after signing the contract, Saliba expressed his delight: “Arsenal is my home. I believe in the manager, I believe in the project, and I want to win big trophies here with my teammates and our fans.”

Manager Mikel Arteta described the deal as a major step forward for the club, calling Saliba a cornerstone of Arsenal’s future.

“William is a special player. His development has been fantastic, and he has shown incredible maturity. Keeping him here for the long term is crucial for our ambitions,” Arteta said.

The extension also sends a strong message to Arsenal’s rivals that the club is serious about competing at the highest level.

With young stars like Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and now Saliba all tied to long contracts, the Gunners are building a squad for sustained success.

Chakwera leaves Malawians in despair with final fuel price hike after election defeat

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has dealt Malawians a painful farewell by approving a final pump price hike just days after being trounced by Peter Mutharika in the September 2025 elections.

With the new president yet to be sworn in, Chakwera’s caretaker administration has imposed fuel price adjustments that have left many Malawians reeling under despair.

Petrol prices have risen sharply from K2,530 per liter to K3,499 per liter.

This represents an almost K1,000 jump per liter, a drastic increase that even surpasses the campaign season spike in the price of maize flour.

Diesel has also been adjusted upwards, climbing from K2,734 per liter to K3,500 per liter.

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), led by Chief Executive Officer Henry Kachaje, announced the new prices despite mounting criticism of the institution’s leadership.

Kachaje was controversially appointed to the position under Chakwera’s administration, largely due to political loyalties rather than merit.

The Office of the Ombudsman had previously ruled that Kachaje was not duly qualified for the post, but the decision was ignored by the outgoing government.

For many Malawians, this final fuel hike represents not only an economic burden but also a symbol of an administration that has left behind frustration, despair, and mistrust.

As Peter Mutharika prepares to take the oath of office, the people of Malawi are left questioning whether the incoming leadership will bring them relief or whether the cycle of hardship will continue.

Singer Lola Young Cancels All Appearances After Passing Out on Stage

UPDATE — 9/30/25 1:10 p.m. ET: Lola Young announced she is canceling all of her upcoming appearances to focus on her well-being after experiencing a medical emergency on stage.

“I’m going away for a while,” the “Messy” singer, 24, wrote via Instagram on Tuesday, September 30. “It pains me to say I have to cancel everything for the foreseeable future.”

Young — who just released an album, I’m Only F***ing Myself, on September 19 — thanked her fans for “all the love and support” before apologizing for clearing her schedule.

“I’m so sorry to let anyone down who has bought a ticket to see me, it hurts me more than you know,” she wrote. “Obviously you will be entitled to a full refund.”

Young signed off her post by asking for “a second chance” once she has “had some time to work on [herself]” and can “come back stronger.”

Original story below:

Lola Young assured fans she was feeling better after a scary incident during her performance at the All Things Go Music Festival in New York.

The “Messy” singer, 24, was in the middle of performing her song “Conceited” at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, New York, on Saturday, September 27, when she collapsed, according to multiple media outlets. Young was rushed off stage to receive medical attention before updating fans on her condition via social media later in the day.

“Hi, for anyone who saw my set at All Things Go today, I am doing okay now,” she wrote via her Instagram Story on Saturday. “Thank you for all of your support.”

According to People, Young had explained to her fans at the New York festival that she’d “had a tricky couple of days,” as she’d previously cancelled an appearance at Audacy’s We Can Survive concert at Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Friday, September 26. (Her manager explained via Instagram that Friday’s cancellation was “due to a sensitive matter.”)

“Sometimes life can really make you feel like you can’t continue, but you know what, today I woke up and I made the decision to come here, and I wanted to be cool … and sometimes life can throw you lemons, and you just gotta make lemonade,” she told the audience at All Things Go prior to her set prematurely ending.

Fans in attendance at the festival reportedly received a few updates on Young’s condition from other artists throughout the day. Young’s friend Remi Wolf spoke on stage about how frightening the ordeal was.

“That was really f***ing scary. My friend Lola is backstage, and she is okay,” Wolf, 29, assured fans.

Us Weekly has reached out to Young’s representatives for comment.

Young has been candid about physical and mental health issues in the past, including explaining via Instagram how her life changed after being diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder at age 17. (According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition is “marked by a mix of schizophrenia symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions, and mood disorder symptoms, such as depression, mania and a milder form of mania called hypomania.”)

“I can’t find the words to describe how much this diagnosis has affected my entire life, and my outlook on the world around me,” she wrote in 2022. “I have struggled immensely learning to accept this part of myself, and I am still learning.”

She went on, “I have to remind myself that I am a regular f***ing person, I am human and I am, like everyone, capable of incredible things, my mental health condition does not define me. It is my superpower.”

The musician is wrapping up a breakout year, which saw her single “Messy” top the U.K. Singles Chart for four weeks in late 2024 and subsequently reach No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. Her third studio album, I’m Only F***ing Myself, was released on September 19, and hit No. 3 on the U.K. Album Chart the following week.

Young is next scheduled to head back to her native U.K. for two headline shows at the O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester on October 6 and October 7, before performing in London, Birmingham and Newcastle throughout the rest of the month. Flames coach Pasuwa names squad without Babatunde in World Cup qualifiers matches

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi National Football Team head coach, Kalisto Pasuwa, has announced a 26-man squad set to face Equatorial Guinea and São Tomé and Príncipe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Flames will host Equatorial Guinea on 9 October at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe before travelling to Tunis for the away clash against São Tomé and Príncipe on 13 October.

Preparations will begin on Sunday, 5 October, when the squad regroups in Lilongwe.

Pasuwa has largely retained the core of his team, keeping 24 of the 26 players who featured in last month’s qualifiers against Namibia and Liberia.

The list features 15 foreign based players, a strong indication of his intent to blend local talent with international experience.

Among the notable inclusions is Ireland based defender Jubril Okedina of Bohemian FC, who returns to the squad for his first competitive appearance since playing in the Four Nations Tournament in March last year.

The squad, however, sees no place for FCB Nyasa Big Bullets striker Babatunde Adepoju, who was earlier tipped for a call-up but has not been included in the final selection.

Leading the attack will be seasoned forward Gabadinho Mhango of Richards Bay, Costa do Sol striker Richard Mbulu and exciting TP Mazembe duo Patrick Mwaungulu and Lanjesi Nkhoma.

Other key attackers include Mayele Malango (Monterey Bay FC), Chawanangwa Kaonga (Zanaco FC), Wisdom Mpinganjira (Mighty Wanderers) and Chikumbutso Salima (FCB Nyasa Big Bullets).

In midfield, Pasuwa has summoned Yankho Singo (FCB Nyasa Big Bullets), Blessings Singini (Mighty Wanderers), Lloyd Aaron (Muaither SC), Lloyd Njaliwa (Costa do Sol) and Robert Saizi (Zanaco).

The defense will be anchored by Charles Petro (Botosani FC), Nickson Nyasulu (FC Platinum), Dennis Chembezi (Al Qasim FC), Emmanuel Nyirenda (Mighty Wanderers), Gomezgani Chirwa (Ngezi Platinum), McDonald Lameck (Silver Strikers), Alick Lungu (Ekhaya FC) and Maxwell Paipi (Silver Strikers), alongside returning Okedina.

Between the posts, the Flames will rely on William Thole (Simba Bhora), George Chikooka (Silver Strikers) and Joshua Waka (Ekhaya FC).

With a blend of homegrown stars and international professionals, Malawi will be hoping to make a strong statement in their push for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

NBM Development Bank accesses MK14 billion from World Bank’s FInES Project

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-NBM Development Bank Limited says it has accessed MK14 billion since 2022 under the Financial Inclusion and Entrepreneurship Scaling (FInES) Project, a World Bank–funded initiative administered through the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) to finance Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) initiatives.

According to the Bank’s General Manager, Bernard Masi, the financing has been channelled towards supporting 61 high-impact SMEs across various sectors, driving significant social and economic transformation in Malawi.

“The strategic allocation of funds has seen the largest portions directed towards agribusiness (29.15% to 23 businesses) and tourism (28.28% to 15 businesses). Other key beneficiaries include the education sector (18.45% to 8 institutions), manufacturing (10.54% to 6 firms), as well as health, ICT, water and sanitation, and energy enterprises.”

“The K14 billion allocation demonstrates the confidence that both the World Bank and the FInES Project have in NBM Development Bank. This facility has allowed us to empower SMEs that are at the heart of Malawi’s economic growth,” said Masi.

Masi also highlighted that the supported businesses have collectively created more than 1,400 jobs, with particular emphasis on youth and women empowerment.

“Of the funds disbursed, 50% went to male-led businesses, 35% supported female-led enterprises, while 15% targeted youth entrepreneurs. Disbursements were made to  enterprises across all three regions of the country. In the Central Region, 26  businesses benefited, including 22  in Lilongwe and others in Dowa and Salima. The Southern Region has an  allocation of 28  clients, mainly in Blantyre, while the Northern Region, 6 businesses benefitted ” he said.

Masi said these results align with Malawi 2063 aspirations and reflect the transformative role that targeted SME financing can play in unlocking the country’s economic potential.

Malawi Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (Musme) President, James Chiutsi, commended NBM Development Bank and the World Bank saying the project has really provided finance to a lot of SMEs in the country.

“SMEs are said to be the engine of the economy, and they do employ quite a substantial number of people. This has helped them continue to employ people and grow their businesses. However, it is a project that cannot stop. It is a project that must come back and stay for a considerable length of time because it has managed to provide the much-needed resources for SMEs in the country,” said Chiutsi.
