‘The Jane Austen Book Club’ (2007)

William Shakespeare is arguably the most famous English writer ever, but I’d wager Jane Austen is the most beloved. The author of Emma and Pride and Prejudice has charmed readers since the early 19th century, so it’s not unreasonable that the book club at the center of the 2007 film The Jane Austen Book Club revolves around someone who only wrote six complete novels and who has been dead for nearly 200 years.

Like all of Austen’s heroines, the film’s main characters are all looking for love, even if they won’t admit to it. Sylvia (Amy Brenneman) is stuck in a dead marriage, while Jocelyn (Maria Bello) just got out of one and is blind to fellow member Grigg’s (Hugh Dancy) obvious interest in her. Prudie (Emily Blunt) is already in love with her husband, but is increasingly tempted by a student in the art class he teaches. As the club reads one Austen book after another, each member takes inspiration from the author’s headstrong heroines and finds the courage to take a chance on love again.

The Jane Austen Book Club benefits from a great cast of veteran actresses and then-up-and-comers who have since become genuine stars. Bello’s career has slowed in recent years, but she’s in her prime here as a woman who doesn’t want to open herself up to romance again. Blunt is also terrific — if a bit miscast — as a mousy (!) woman who wants to take a bite of the forbidden fruit Tery (Kevin Zegers) seems to offer her. The film is a chick-lit picture done right, and it will bring a much-needed smile to your face.

‘It Could Happen to You’ (1994)

What would you do if you won the lottery? That’s a common enough question, but the charming 1994 movie goes a bit further with it. When kind NYPD cop Charlie (Nicolas Cage) doesn’t have money to tip broke waitress Yvonne (Bridget Fonda) at his favorite Queens diner, he offers a deal — he’ll come back tomorrow and double his tip, or he’ll split his lottery winnings. It’s no spoiler to reveal that Charlie wins $4 million and splits it with Yvonne, which garners a lot of media attention for them both and scorn from Charlie’s greedy wife, Muriel (Rosie Perez). Things get even more complicated when Charlie and Yvonne begin to fall for one another.

It Could Happen to You’s is a deliberately old-fashioned romance, populated mostly by working-class people who are true to their word. Even when Charlie and Yvonne strike it rich, they don’t forget their blue-collar roots, which is why they fall in love. Cage does his best Jimmy Stewart impression, while Fonda shows all the charisma and appeal that should’ve made her a bigger star. It’s Perez, though, who steals the show in every scene she’s in as Craig’s firecracker wife. You want to hate Muriel, but Perez’s manic energy makes it really hard to.

‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’ (2020)

Does the world need another Charles Dickens adaptation? Lots of people would answer “no,” but I say, bring them on! One of the best is The Personal History of David Copperfield, a spirited and funny adaptation of the author’s celebrated 1850 novel, David Copperfield.

Dev Patel stars as the title character, a poor but enterprising English lad who gradually rises through London society. After enduring some hardships as a child, including a traumatizing stint at a factory that’s one of Dickens’ literary trademarks, David matures into a young adult and becomes a lawyer-in-training while living in London. But his poor past comes back to haunt him, and his present fortunes — not to mention a potential future with the beautiful Dora (Morfydd Clark) — could be in jeopardy.

What makes The Personal History of David Copperfield different from most other adaptations is that it never once feels stuffy or, God forbid, “respectful.” While more or less faithful to Dickens’ original text, the movie changes things up for the better, giving the story a liveliness that makes it easy to watch. Credit cowriter and director Armando Iannucci, who brings his gift of wordplay, which made his cutting-edge shows The Thick of It and Veep so addictive to watch, to Dickens’ very Victorian story. Among the large and impressive cast, Patel stands out as a Dickens hero you envy and root for, even though all the odds are stacked against him.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a significant victory for two refugees, a court order has led to the release of their shipping containers, seized by police during the 2023 refugee relocation exercise.

Tayub Garffar Jusab and Jean Claude Mbarubukeye, the two refugees, walked out of the National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe with smiles, having successfully reclaimed their property.

The police had suspected that some containers posed a security threat, but a recent search found no evidence of weapons, prompting the court to order their release.

The two refugees had sought legal intervention, and their efforts have paid off.

Inua Advocacy Communication Officer Brenda Buliyani has encouraged other refugees whose containers were seized to come forward and reclaim their property through proper legal channels.

“This is a positive development, and we hope it sets a precedent for others who have had their property seized,” she said.

National Police Service spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed that 14 containers have been released so far, following court orders.

“We have 53 containers with pending interest from owners, while 72 remain unclaimed,” he said.

Kalaya added that the police are committed to upholding the law and protecting the rights of all individuals, including refugees.

The relocation exercise in 2023 was aimed at addressing security concerns and managing refugee populations.

However, the seizure of containers has been a contentious issue, with many refugees claiming they were unfairly targeted.

The successful reclamation of the containers is seen as a testament to the power of legal advocacy and the importance of upholding human rights.

As refugees continue to navigate the complexities of their situation, this development offers a glare of hope.

The incident highlights the need for clear policies and procedures governing the treatment of refugees and their property.

Meghan Trainor is clapping back at criticism of her 60-pound weight loss.

The “All About That Bass” singer, 31, told Entertainment Tonight in an interview on Thursday, November 13, that her new song, “Still Don’t Care,” is a response to people scrutinizing her appearance.

“‘I’m literally, for the first time ever, after having babies, taking care of my health to the highest level. I’ve never felt better, and I look incredible. I feel great,” Trainor said. “And that’s when people attack me.”

She continued, “I was like, ‘Wait a second. I’m taking care of myself. You don’t like it?’ So what am I supposed to do? I have to find a way to not be affected by that.”

A social media storm erupted on Thursday after claims surfaced suggesting that the person behind the notorious “Bakili Muluzi TV” Facebook page has finally been identified. The page, known for its frequent political commentary and alleged defamation, has for years operated under anonymity, earning both a loyal following and fierce criticism.

Online commentator James C. Makopa was among the first to assert that the individual behind the account had been unmasked. According to Makopa, the person allegedly linked to the page once worked with him, prompting many users to believe the revelation may be credible.

Agape Khembo added fuel to the discussion, stating that “a person cannot hide forever,” and claiming that the man revealed in circulating screenshots and posts is Haswel—the individual allegedly responsible for running Bakili Muluzi TV. Khembo described him as the “champion of online defamation,” reflecting the frustration many have expressed over the years about the page’s content.

Former legislator Jessie Kabwila also weighed in, acknowledging that although the alleged administrator’s identity may have finally been revealed, his ability to operate anonymously for years demonstrated considerable tactical skill. “Even though we have removed the mask, we must credit him for managing to hide for so long. BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has donated 84 desks worth MK15 million to Namitambo Primary School in Chiradzulu to improve learning conditions for pupils.

The desks will cater for the pupils who previously sat on the floor due to a shortage of furniture.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Chiradzulu on Thursday, NBM plc Head of Corporate Banking Division, William Chatsala, said the donation was part of the Bank’s efforts to support education through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

“This donation is about restoring the dignity of learners. One of the teachers told me that it is difficult for girls to stand and answer questions because most of them sit on the floor. With these desks, they can now learn comfortably and dream of a better life,” said Chatsala.

Chiradzulu District Commissioner, Francis Matewele, commended NBM plc for what he described as a timely and impactful gesture that will help improve the quality of education in the district.

“I would like to thank National Bank, ‘The bank of the nation’, for this donation of 84 desks for our learners in the junior classes. Most learners were sitting on the floor, but the bank has stepped in with K15 million to purchase these desks,” he said.

Matewele further appealed for a mindset change among parents and guardians, urging them to send their children to school.

Namitambo Primary School Head Teacher, Charles Majawa, expressed gratitude, saying the desks will ease seating challenges during examinations.

“Namitambo Zone is the biggest centre in Chiradzulu, and during examinations, learners faced problems because they had no desks. This support has come at the right time,” said Majawa.

The school has an enrolment of 1,221 learners.
