President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged journalism practitioners to continue serving the public interest hold leaders accountable and provide citizens with accurate information to make informed decisions.

He described the media as an indispensable pillar of democracy.

The President said this yesterday in a tribute to veteran journalist distinguished editor and former Managing Director of The Guardian newspaper Mr. Oyinlade ‘Ladbone’ Bonuola on his 80th birthday.

President Tinubu who celebrated Bonuola’s remarkable contributions to Nigerian journalism – spanning more than five decades – described him as one of the country’s most respected media professionals whose editorial courage integrity and commitment to truth had left an enduring imprint on the industry.

He noted that Bonuola’s professional accomplishments underscored the importance of responsible journalism in promoting public accountability strengthening democratic institutions and preserving factual records for future generations.

‘Your career reflects a profound belief that journalism must serve the public interest hold leaders accountable and give citizens the information they need to make informed decisions. Your influence extends beyond the newsrooms you led’ President Tinubu said.

He noted that the veteran journalist’s commitment to accuracy fairness and integrity represented values that must remain central to the media’s responsibility to inform the public and strengthen democracy.

The President particularly acknowledged Bonuola’s contributions to shaping the language of media reporting in Nigeria describing him as one of the exceptional editors of the 20th century.

‘At 80 you stand tall as one of Nigeria’s most respected figures in journalism a man whose professional excellence editorial courage integrity and commitment to the truth have left an enduring imprint on the nation’s media landscape’ he said.

Recalling Bonuola’s professional journey President Tinubu recalled that the veteran editor began his journalism career at the Daily Times in February 1971 as a trainee sub-editor before rising through the ranks.

He subsequently joined The Guardian in 1982 as its pioneer editor and later became the Managing Director a position he held until 1999.

Bonuola also co-founded the defunct The Comet newspaper where he served as Managing Director and subsequently occupied the same position at Nigerian Compass.

The President recalled that Bonuola’s weekly column in the Daily Times ‘Caught Out’ was widely read by practising journalists journalism students and members of the public.

He said the veteran journalist’s leadership at The Guardian and The Comet which metamorphosed into The Nation newspaper demonstrated exceptional editorial judgment intellectual depth and an understanding of the media’s responsibility in building an informed and progressive society.

President Tinubu also applauded Bonuola’s mentorship of younger journalists noting that his influence extended beyond the newsrooms he managed to generations of media practitioners who benefited from his professional example.

‘As we celebrate this remarkable milestone with you I acknowledge your legacy of professionalism mentorship and service to our country. We celebrate your invaluable contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.

‘Your life and career remind us that journalism’s enduring value lies not merely in reporting events but in shaping ideas nurturing informed citizens and preserving the truth for future generations’ the President stated.

President Tinubu on behalf of his family the Federal Government and Nigerians congratulated Bonuola on attaining the milestone age and wished him many more years of good health peace and fulfilment.

He also prayed that the veteran journalist’s legacy would continue to inspire successive generations of journalists and media professionals across the country.

Oyo State Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal Speaker of the House of Assembly Adebo Ogundoyin and the state governorship candidate of Allied Peoples Movement (APM) Bimbo Adekanmbi have rallied party leaders and stakeholders across Ibarapa to strengthen unity intensify grassroots mobilisation and consolidate the party’s political structure ahead of the 2027 general election.

Leaders and stakeholders of APM in Ibarapa land have also pledged unity collective action and stronger grassroots mobilisation as the party intensifies preparations for the general election.

The pledge was made at Ibarapa APM zonal stakeholders’ meeting in Lanlate Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State where party leaders political office-holders candidates and grassroots mobilisers from the three local governments in Ibarapa resolved to work together towards achieving the party’s electoral objectives.

The meeting was led by Lawal and attended by Ogundoyin Peter Ojedokun representing Ibarapa North/Central State Constituency Adekambi and APM Presidential and Governorship Campaign Council Director-General Dr. Nureni Adeniran.

Others at the meeting were Dhikrullah Stanley popularly known as Odidiomo APM candidate for Oyo South Senatorial District Anthony Adepoju popularly known as IbarapaKan the party’s candidate for Ibarapa North/Ibarapa Central Federal Constituency and Adedeji Sheu APM candidate for Ido/Ibarapa Federal Constituency.

Also in attendance were members of Oyo State Executive Council including Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters Ademola Ojo popularly known as Ijaiya and the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Wasilat Adegoke.

The meeting attracted representatives from each of the 10 wards across the three local government areas as well as local government and ward executive members women leaders and other party faithful.

Addressing the gathering Lawal called on party leaders candidates and members to close ranks strengthen their relationships and work to advance APM’s political interests ahead of the 2027 elections.

He emphasised the importance of unity discipline and sustained engagement with the electorate urging stakeholders to complement one another’s efforts in building a formidable political structure across Ibarapa.

The deputy governor disclosed that some of the demands and requests presented by stakeholders had been noted assuring them that necessary action would be taken urgently.

Ogundoyin said APM was growing stronger and becoming firmly rooted in Ibarapa expressing confidence in the party’s expanding political presence across the zone.

The Speaker stressed that sustained unity cooperation and effective grassroots mobilisation would be essential to consolidating the party’s growing influence and positioning its candidates for success in the 2027 general election.

Adekanmbi called for a united front among party leaders candidates and members stressing that collective determination and cooperation would be crucial to the party’s success in 2027.

He said the current administration in Oyo State had laid a solid foundation for the state’s all-round development adding that he would build on the achievements and legacy of the administration.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State Olatunbosun Oyintiloye has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves encouragement from Nigerians instead of the harsh criticism he is getting over the ongoing economic reforms.

In a statement yesterday in Osogbo the state capital Oyintiloye said President Tinubu means well for Nigerians and should not be blamed as though he were the cause of the country’s economic challenges.

The APC chieftain acknowledged the prevailing economic hardship but said the President was working to address the situation.

He said the major economic reforms the Tinubu administration introduced including fuel subsidy removal and floating of the naira were intended to stabilise the economy for the benefit of Nigerians.

According to him although the policies are tough they are necessary and have begun to yield positive results.

‘What the President needs at this point is our encouragement not harsh criticism or name-calling.

‘What he met when he assumed office was a battered economy and since then he has been working round the clock to address the economic crisis.

‘We should all remember that he was not the architect of the current economic challenges we are facing and he cannot solve all the problems at once’ Oyintiloye said.

The former Osun State House of Assembly member also urged opposition figures using the prevailing economic challenges to campaign against President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election to have a rethink.

He asserted that none of the opposition candidates contesting for the nation’s number one seat in 2027 has the capacity to outperform President Tinubu considering their antecedents in past political offices.

‘It would therefore be unwise to weaponise the current economic challenges which the President is trying to address against his presidential ambition’ he said.

The APC chieftain urged the President to do everything within his power to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.

He acknowledged that despite the administration’s efforts to improve the economy many Nigerians were still experiencing severe hardship.

Oyintiloye also appealed to the President to review the various social intervention programmes meant to reduce hardship among vulnerable groups and to strengthen other economic policies to ease the burden on the masses.

The former lawmaker expressed optimism that President Tinubu would secure a landslide victory in the 2027 presidential election citing what he called the President’s achievements across various sectors.

He urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the President and support his efforts to move the country forward.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has predicted victory for President Bola Tinubu’s political camp in the next election while attacking a presidential candidate who wants the government to bring back fuel subsidy.

Shettima urged Nigerians to support the continuation of Tinubu’s economic reforms warning that reversing the policies for political reasons could harm the country’s economy.

Speaking at the Nigerian Economic Summit he said: ‘Hopefully we are going to support continuity support for economic progress support for the Nigerian nation.’ He added that he believed his political camp would win the election.

The Vice President criticised an unnamed presidential candidate for proposing a return to fuel subsidies saying Nigeria could not afford to return to the old system. ‘One of the leading presidential candidates is advocating a return to the subsidy scheme’ he said.

Shettima argued that President Tinubu took difficult decisions because the country needed them even though the policies had caused hardship for many Nigerians.

He said delaying such decisions would have made the problem harder and more costly to solve. ‘He chose to forfeit the applause of the moment for the enduring gains of generations yet unborn’ Shettima said.

The Vice President also questioned the presidential aspirant’s ability to manage Nigeria’s economy citing the candidate’s background in sanitation. ‘He doesn’t have the skill set to govern a modern economy’ he said.

However Shettima praised Peter Obi for saying he would not restore fuel subsidy if elected President. ‘I respect Peter Obi for having the courage to say that he is not going to restore the fuel subsidy’ he said.

The Vice President also accused some political opponents of using figures he described as doubtful to criticise the government instead of offering better policies.

He urged Nigerians especially business leaders and other influential people to take the country’s political future seriously instead of staying silent.

Quoting political thinker Frantz Fanon he said: ‘Every onlooker is either a coward or a traitor.’

Shettima said Nigerians must decide whether to support the continuation of the current economic reforms or risk reversing the administration’s policies.

He also called on future governments to maintain policies that support economic growth regardless of which political party wins an election.

‘Administrations can come and go; I am the 17th vice president of Nigeria. Well more vice presidents of Nigeria will come after I leave. But the Nigerian nation has to be sustained’ he said.

He added that Nigeria’s progress depends on a stable economic policy that won’t change simply because of political interests.

Defending the removal of the fuel subsidy Shettima said the former system placed a heavy burden on government finances.

He described it as a ‘subsidy scam’ and a ‘subsidy industry’ that consumed public money.

According to him Nigeria faced a serious economic crisis when Tinubu became President making difficult decisions necessary to prevent the situation from worsening.

Shettima also compared Nigeria’s petrol prices with those in neighbouring countries to support his argument against restoring the subsidy.

He said petrol sold for about $0.85 per litre in Niger Republic equivalent to ?1148.36 while the price in Benin Republic was about $1.28 or ?1729.39.

In Cameroon he put the price at $1.44 per litre equivalent to about ?1945.45 compared with ?1309 in Nigeria.

He argued that Nigeria’s petrol price was still lower than the prices he quoted for the three countries.

Shettima also recalled that Nigeria consumed about 67 million litres of petrol daily under the former system.

He claimed that cheap Nigerian fuel had affected neighbouring countries citing the closure of a refinery in Cameroon as an example.

The Vice President urged Nigerians to consider the cost of the fuel subsidy before supporting calls to restore it.

On the economy Shettima said the Tinubu administration’s reforms were beginning to show results in areas such as economic growth investment oil production and trade.

He cited figures from the National Bureau of Statistics showing Nigeria’s economy grew by 3.89 per cent in the first quarter of 2026 up from 3.13 per cent in the same period of 2025.

He said non-oil activities accounted for 96.08 per cent of the economy while manufacturing grew by 3.29 per cent and the oil sector by 2.67 per cent.

According to him the figures showed that the economy was recovering and becoming less dependent on oil.

However he said economic growth figures alone were not enough if Nigerians did not see improvements in their daily lives. ‘Our ambition must outgrow favourable statistics’ he said.

Shettima said the government wanted to turn the economic recovery into better living conditions and more jobs for young people farmers manufacturers entrepreneurs and innovators.

He said stabilising the economy was only the first step. The government also needed to create an environment where businesses could invest expand and employ more people.

He added that Nigeria must not only create jobs but also improve work quality and make better use of its available workers.

The Vice President said roads electricity and other infrastructure should be judged by how much they help businesses and the economy. He also said schools should equip students with skills they could use to find jobs and improve productivity.

On investment Shettima said Nigeria attracted $10.37 billion in capital importation in the first quarter of 2026 up 83.83 per cent from the same period in 2025.

He said the money included investments in financial markets and direct investments in businesses.

Shettima said the government would continue to make it easier for businesses to operate by reducing unnecessary rules improving transparency and making its policies more predictable.

He added that the tax reforms were designed to create a fairer system that could fund public development while giving businesses more certainty.

The government was also reforming the electricity market to improve power supply and attract investment in electricity generation transmission distribution and alternative energy.

In the oil sector Shettima said crude oil and condensate production reached 1.735 million barrels per day in June 2026 marking four consecutive months of growth.

He said the government wanted to use the improvement to expand local refining gas processing petrochemicals and manufacturing.

According to him Nigeria needed to process more of its natural resources at home instead of relying mainly on exporting crude oil and other raw materials.

Shettima said the government was taking a similar approach to agriculture by connecting farmers to storage facilities processing centres and markets.

He said the government was also working to expand irrigation provide better farming equipment improve access to finance and develop rural infrastructure.

The Vice President said food output had reached its highest level in 74 months which he described as a sign of progress.

In the solid minerals sector he said Nigeria needed to move beyond digging minerals out of the ground and exporting them in raw form. He said the country should process more minerals locally use them in industries and export finished products.

Shettima also called for increased exports of agricultural produce manufactured goods processed minerals and digital services.

He said Nigeria recorded exports worth ?21.17 trillion in the first quarter of 2026 while imports stood at ?13.62 trillion leaving a trade surplus of ?7.55 trillion.

However crude oil accounted for 52.9 per cent of total exports while non-oil exports were valued at ?3.19 trillion.

He said Nigeria needed to earn more from products other than crude oil to reduce its dependence on oil revenue.

The Vice President also spoke about the growth of Nigeria’s technology industry saying five of Africa’s nine unicorns were Nigerian. Unicorns are privately owned companies valued at $1 billion or more.

He said young Nigerians had shown that they could compete internationally in technology financial services and the creative industries.

Shettima said Nigeria’s large population and natural resources could make it much more prosperous if the country maintained sound policies and showed the commitment needed to implement them.

He noted that Nigeria was projected to become the world’s third most populous country by 2050 adding that the country needed to turn its growing population into an advantage by creating jobs and expanding economic opportunities.

The Vice President also urged business leaders and government officials to work together to grow the economy.

Referring to the book Gambling on Development by Caster Ndakwo he argued that countries progress when leaders and business owners put economic growth ahead of personal interests.

He urged participants at the Nigerian Economic Summit to turn their discussions into practical solutions that would improve the economy.

Shettima said the government’s Renewed Hope development programme was designed to connect national development plans with the needs of communities across 8809 wards and 774 local government areas.

He said Nigeria could not develop properly without strong communities and projects that reached people at the grassroots.

He praised the Nigerian Economic Summit Group for bringing government officials business leaders workers academics civil society groups and development partners together to discuss the country’s economic challenges.

Shettima said the government needed private-sector support to create jobs expand industries and improve living standards.

He admitted that much work remained to be done adding that the country’s economic recovery must lead to real benefits for Nigerians rather than improvements in figures alone.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has identified economic vulnerability proprietorial interference and censorship as major threats to media independence warning that failure to address them could undermine journalism’s credibility and Nigeria’s democratic development.

Uzodimma said the media had played a significant role in deepening democracy and accelerating national development since the return to democratic governance in 1999 but stressed that journalists must be protected from pressures capable of compromising their professional responsibilities.

The governor spoke in Abuja at the weekend while delivering the third Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi Annual Diamond Lecture with the theme ‘Media Democratic Consolidation and Development’.

He said the expansion of media platforms had created greater opportunities for public engagement and democratic participation but had also increased the demand for professionalism financial independence and credible journalism.

According to him the challenges confronting Nigerian journalists must be addressed to enable the media to discharge its constitutional responsibility of strengthening democracy and driving development.

He identified economic insecurity among media practitioners interference by media owners safety concerns and harsh working conditions as obstacles to effective journalism.

Uzodimma who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum called for a collaborative framework involving the government media practitioners and citizens to strengthen the media’s capacity to promote democratic accountability and national development.

He said the media’s contribution to democracy could be sustained only if journalists were able to operate freely uphold professional standards and retain public confidence.

The governor also paid tribute to the late Raymond Dokpesi describing the media entrepreneur as a pioneer whose investments in private broadcasting helped expand Nigeria’s democratic space.

He recalled that before Dokpesi established Ray Power FM and African Independent Television (AIT) broadcasting was largely dominated by government-owned organisations.

He said the establishment of the two media organisations widened access to independent broadcasting and contributed to economic growth through job creation advertising opportunities infrastructure development and the promotion of Nigerian culture internationally.

Uzodimma argued that Dokpesi’s contribution to broadcasting went beyond entrepreneurship noting that his investments helped broaden the space for independent voices and public discourse in the country.

He described the annual lecture as an important initiative for preserving the media mogul’s legacy but urged stakeholders to take further steps to immortalise his contributions to Nigeria’s media industry.

‘The best tribute we can pay to his memory is to protect that media freedom and ensure that the journalism practised under it remains worthy of public trust’ he said.

The governor also proposed the establishment of a national media centre in Dokpesi’s honour saying such an institution would serve as a lasting recognition of his contributions to broadcasting and democratic development.

He maintained that protecting media freedom and strengthening public trust were essential to consolidating Nigeria’s democracy. He urged stakeholders to ensure that the challenges confronting journalists did not diminish the media’s role in holding power accountable.

A philanthropist and the founder of the Agbonjagwe Leemon Ikpea Foundation Chief Dr. Leemon Ikpea has donated a 62-bed medical centre to Ewatto community in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State to boost access to healthcare in the area and the neighbouring communities.

The medical centre which was inaugurated last week and named after the founder was built at an estimated cost of N2.227 billion.

The facility is equipped with modern medical equipment and is expected to reduce the difficulty that the residents faced by having to travel considerable distances to access healthcare particularly during emergencies.

The centre is equipped to provide a range of services including emergency and urgent care maternal and child health diagnostic and laboratory services pharmacy services general medical care preventive healthcare specialist and referral care and community health outreach.

During the ceremony Ikpea said he conceived the project in response to the healthcare challenges that residents of Ewatto and the surrounding communities faced.

He said: ‘I firmly believe that one of the most meaningful legacies any individual can leave behind is an institution that continues to improve and preserve human lives long after the individual is gone. It is my sincere hope that this Medical Centre will become such a legacy.’

The philanthropist said the initiative complemented rather than substituted for government to expand access to quality and affordable healthcare services.

He added: ‘We are particularly encouraged by the continuing efforts of both the Federal and Edo State governments to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve access to healthcare services. We hope that this facility will become a valuable partner in those efforts.’

Ikpea said the centre would provide healthcare and create opportunities for medical professionals to work and train adding that it was intended to ensure mothers children and elderly people could access timely medical attention without travelling long distances while emergencies receive prompt care.

Acknowledging the contributions of the Federal and the Edo State governments Ikpea urged the residents of Ewatto and the neighbouring communities to take ownership of the facility and ensure its proper maintenance.

During the inauguration Governor Monday Okpebholo hailed Ikpea saying his life as a philanthropist was exemplified by the lives he had touched.

The governor hailed the philanthropist for the ‘extraordinary healthcare investment’ he brought to his people.

He said: ‘You have demonstrated that your true success is not measured by what you have achieved but by the lives you have touched. You built more than hope; you have brought quality healthcare closer to the people.’

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate patted Ikpea on the back for complementing the government’s efforts to improve access to quality healthcare.

The minister described the medical centre as a significant contribution to healthcare delivery in the community.

In a goodwill message the Onojie of Ekpoma Kingdom His Royal Highness Antony Ehiozojie Abumere II congratulated Ikpea on the establishment of the medical centre describing it as a valuable contribution to the health and wellbeing of the people of Esan land.

Abumere noted that the project reflected the values of compassion and communal responsibility praying for God to grant Ikpea greater wisdom strength and long life to continue serving humanity

Also in a message by its Managing Director Tony Okonigene Peacton Global Ventures Limited the contractor that handled the project said it reflected the philanthropist’s commitment to the improvement of health and wellbeing of the Esan people.

The company added that the medical centre would improve access to healthcare help save lives and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

Also the Onogie of Igueben HRM Ehiogie Eluojierior applauded Ikpea’s achievements and the human investment initiatives of his foundation across Edo State urging other capable individuals to emulate his efforts in providing healthcare facilities.

Established in 2012 by Ikpea ALIF has pursued programmes in education social welfare skills and community development.

The people of Aramoko Ekiti the headquarters of Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti State have appealed to the Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi to intervene in the obaship crisis rocking the ancient town.

They also begged the monarch to plead with Governor Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti to allow the Kingmakers to conclude the process of selecting a new monarch for the town which has been stalled for months.

The stool became vacant in August 2025 following the death of the previous monarch Oba Adegoke Adeyemi aged 82.

In a statement issued on Monday the head and secretary of the Kingmakers High Chiefs Julius Adebayo and Kolade Oyebade said the selection process had been suspended for about six months leaving the community without a substantive monarch.

They said the 12 Kingmakers were unable to reach a consensus among three shortlisted princes after an initial vote ended in a 6-6 tie.

They said a second round of voting was required to resolve the deadlock in line with the established selection procedure.

The Kingmakers said the process which began in April 2026 complied with the Alara of Aramoko Chieftaincy Declaration and the Ekiti State Chieftaincy Law.

They explained that they shortlisted three princes following an Ifa consultation conducted by renowned Ifa priest Baba Araba Elebuibon.

‘However 6 months later the process remains suspended after the Hon. Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs postponed it. Our letters to the Government have gone unanswered.

‘Kabiyesi we are constrained to run to you as our father and the custodian of Yoruba culture. The stool of Alara remains vacant. Our youths are restive. Our traditional festivals and rites cannot hold.

‘We therefore beg Kabiyesi Onirisa to please use your revered office to appeal to Governor Oyebanji to kindly grant permission for the Kingmakers to reconvene immediately and complete the selection’ the statement said.

The kingmakers said the prolonged vacancy was affecting the town’s cultural heritage traditional festivals and customary rites and expressed concern over growing restiveness among youths.

They described the Ooni as a revered traditional ruler and custodian of Yoruba culture whose intervention could help resolve the impasse peacefully.

The kingmakers expressed confidence that the Ooni’s intervention would help resolve the dispute and preserve the historical ties between Aramoko-Ekiti and Ile-Ife.

They also expressed confidence in Governor Oyebanji’s commitment to upholding the law and respecting traditional institutions.

‘We are confident that with Kabiyesi’s fatherly intervention this matter will be resolved peacefully and the ancient bond between Aramoko and Ife will continue to be protected and strengthened.

‘We have faith in Kabiyesi’s wisdom and in Governor Oyebanji’s respect for law and tradition’ it added.

Oke-Osanyintolu College of Health Sciences and Technology Ido-Ekiti Ekiti State has recorded a 100 per cent pass rate in the national examinations taken by students of its Departments of Pharmacy and Community Health in August and September this year.

The Provost of the college Dr Johnson Adebayo Ojo expressed delight at the results and congratulated the successful students and their parents.

Ojo attributed the achievement to the students’ hard work and dedication to their studies as well as the provision of adequate equipment infrastructure and a conducive learning environment.

He hailed the Heads of Departments and other academic staff members for their commitment and diligence urging staff and students to sustain the achievement.

The Provost urged young Nigerians seeking admission into tertiary institutions to apply to the college noting that the admission was still ongoing and that prospective students could choose from the courses available.

He also cited a recent recognition of the institution by the Senior Staff Association of Universities Teaching Hospitals Research Institutes and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI) Federal Teaching Hospital Ido-Ekiti Branch.
