Ekiti 2026: APC guber aspirant Ojo, Oyebanji trade blame over alleged attacks in Ekiti

All Progressives Congress (APC), Kayode Ojo, and Governor Biodun Oyebanji clashed on Sunday over alleged attacks, intimidation, and harassment of supporters ahead of the governorship primary.

Ojo accused agents of the state government of masterminding politically motivated violence, unlawful arrests, and persecution of his supporters across various communities in the state.

Speaking at a press conference in Ado-Ekiti, Ojo, through the Head of the Kayode Ojo Team, Olukayode Oluyemo, alleged that several of his supporters had been unlawfully arrested, detained, and assaulted in a bid to weaken his growing political base.

According to him, incidents of attacks had been recorded in Igede-Ekiti, Otun-Ekiti, Ikere-Ekiti, and Emure-Ekiti.

He further claimed that intelligence reports indicated plans by political thugs allegedly loyal to the governor to disrupt his ward-to-ward campaign tour scheduled to begin on Thursday.

Ojo also cited a viral video in which threats were allegedly issued against him and his loyalists.

‘We have credible intelligence that some political thugs, believed to be loyal to Governor Oyebanji, are threatening to disrupt our campaign activities,’ Oluyemo said. ‘We urge security agencies to prevent any breakdown of law and order. Peaceful competition is the bedrock of democracy and must be protected.’

He further decried the alleged vandalisation of his campaign offices and properties belonging to his supporters, describing the incidents as ‘a direct assault on democratic rights and a violation of both the Nigerian and APC constitutions.’

Ojo demanded the immediate release of all detained supporters, an independent investigation into the alleged attacks, and sanctions against any public officials found guilty of abuse of power.

He warned that using state institutions to suppress political opponents could endanger peace and stability in the state.

However, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Yinka Olatunbosun, dismissed the allegations as baseless and mischievous, accusing Ojo of seeking cheap publicity to cover up his political unpopularity.

‘No popular aspirant or loyal APC member will accuse the government of blocking their movement or attacking their supporters. It’s not only untrue but a figment of imagination – a lie from the pit of hell,’ Olatunbosun said.

He added that Ojo was merely attempting to drag the governor’s name into controversy to justify an anticipated poor performance in the forthcoming APC governorship primary. ‘Politics requires mutual respect, collaboration, and camaraderie – not frivolous claims or media drama,’ he stated.

DSS apologises, releases wrongfully arrested Journalists

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released two reporters of Jay 101.9 FM, Jos, Plateau State, wrongfully arrested during the visit, on Saturday, of President Bola Tinubu, who was in the state for the burial of mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwadta Goshwe.

According to a credible security source, on hearing that some overzealous operatives had arrested Ms. Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang, who work for the radio station,

the Director-General, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, ordered their immediate release.

According to the source, the Service also immediately contacted the national president of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, and conveyed the DG’s apologies.lesde

‘The Director assured the NUJ President that the new DSS leadership treasures the importance of a free press in a democracy, and has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. He further assured the NUJ President that any officer found culpable will be appropriately sanctioned.

‘The new DG is correcting the wrongs he inherited. One of them is overzealousness. This is why the new DG has not failed to admit so whenever the Service makes mistakes. We are witnesses to several instances when the Service apologized and even compensated victims of wrongful arrests.

‘The DG is an absolute lover of human rights and press freedom. You may recall that sometime ago, the DSS DG apologized to the management of TVC over the alleged harassment and intimidation of a reporter,’ added the source.

Methodist Council of Knights holds 9th Annual Choral Day

It was an afternoon of melodious hymns, Psalms and Anthems as the Council of Knights Lagos and Lagos Mainland chapters of the Methodist Church Nigeria held its 9th Annual Choral Day celebration themed, ‘Arise In Faith Through Music’.

Guests were treated to classical renditions of anthems, psalms, traditional pieces and melodious music at the concert that took place on the 1st of October, 2025, at the Williams Memorial Methodist Cathedral, Ago Ijaiye, in Ebute Metta, Lagos.

The event, which had 48 choristers drawn across from ten choirs in the Archdiocese of Lagos, was conducted by the Grand Concert Choir master, Sir Soji Onafowokan (KCW), who led the choir in ministering in songs ably backed by the Orchestra led by Tope Jaiyesimi.

The Choral event featured sacred renditions of Hymns with descants, solos, duets, psalms, anthems and traditional songs, which brought alive the Methodist spirit and heritage, as it is said Methodism was born in songs.

Bishop of Lagos Central, Rt Revd. Samuel Ransford Nortey, in his welcome address, welcomed everyone present to the event and that it was a great opportunity to host the Choral Day.

Speaking on the significance of the occasion, Sir Ayorinde Thomas said the idea was to bring back the hymns, chants that the Methodists are known for. It was to enlighten the people about the importance of it in our worship and in the Methodist Church, as done by Charles Wesley.

Continuing, he said there had been a gap and the Council of Knights agreed to fill the gap and that it was also an opportunity to pray for the nation as the concert is held every Independence Day.

Rtd Major Williams, a knight of Charles Wesley, highlighted that the importance was to bring back the Methodist heritage and not allow it to die.

Prayers were held for Nigeria as she clocked 65 years of independence during the musical showpiece.

Two years of Adedeji at FIRS: A raft of achievements

The emergence of Zacch Adedeji, PhD, as the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), began as a whisper before the formal announcement.

Although the confirmation of his appointment came three months later, since he assumed office, he has practically demonstrated his capacity to take on the tax and fiscal space headlong with much equanimity expected of the Capricorn that he is.

A Capricorn is disciplined, practical, ambitious, and hardworking. He often takes on leadership roles with a strong sense of responsibility and a ‘can-do’ attitude. This is quintessential Zacch Adedeji, PhD.

Two years on, these qualities have defined the leadership paradigm at the FIRS, shaping its policies and thrusting its administration in a positive direction.

As Adedeji marks his second anniversary as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Executive Chairman, Nigerians can attest to his significant strides in transforming the nation’s tax system.

He has led the FIRS to surpass revenue targets, introduced a raft of tax reforms, modernised tax administration, and made the FIRS a customer-centric organisation.

Revenue collection achievements

Under Adedeji’s leadership, the FIRS has consistently exceeded its revenue targets. In 2023, the agency collected N12.36 trillion or 107% thereby surpassing its target of N11.55 trillion. In 2024, he also collected 21.7 trillion naira against the target of N19.7 trillion.

These remarkable feats demonstrate Adedeji’s ability to drive success through strategic planning and efficiency.

Between September 2023 and August 2025, the Service collected a total of N46 trillion in tax revenue. This represents: 115% of the combined revenue target of N40.07 trillion.

The two-year performance reflects the impact of reforms implemented by the management, which enhanced efficiency in the tax system, expanded the tax base, and improved compliance through digital solutions such as TaxPro-Max, e-Invoicing, and USSD (×829#) services. Strengthened enforcement measures, inter-agency collaboration, and improved staff welfare further boosted productivity.

These measures reduced reliance on oil revenues, strengthened non-oil collections, and enabled the Service to exceed its revenue targets between September 2023 and August 2025.

Tax system reforms

Adedeji has introduced several initiatives to simplify the tax system and improve the taxpayer experience. These include: Introducing new tax legislation that aims to reform the obsolete provisions of the tax laws and align the tax system with modern taxation and economic practices.

These tax legislations are the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 (NTA), the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 (NTAA), the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act 2025 (JRBA), and the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2025 (NRSA).

TaxPro-Max: A tax administration system that automates over 80% of manual processes, reducing bureaucracy and enhancing efficiency.

National Single Window Initiative: A platform that facilitates fast and easy trade operations at ports, harmonising government revenue and promoting economic growth.

– One-Stop Shop: A streamlined tax office operation that caters to diverse taxpayers by category, improving customer satisfaction and reducing complaints.

– Unbundling of administrative groupings in the Service: The groupings were hitherto based on tax types, but Adedeji’s model is based on functions designed to increase the taxpayer experience.

Digital innovation

The FIRS has made significant strides in digital innovation under Adedeji’s leadership. He has effectively introduced new integrated modules on:

– TaxProMax: Automating tax processes and enhancing efficiency in tax payment.

– Leveraged technology: To block revenue leakages, ramp up revenue collection, and enhance taxpayer experience.

– Expanded integrated tax administration systems: Creating seamless, efficient, and transparent processes that redefine the taxpayer experience. He established self-service centres in the field offices to help taxpayers navigate the seamless tax payment processes.

Customer-centric focus of the Service:

In FIRS, there are three recognised categories of customers: taxpayers, vendors, and staff. Understood in this sense, Adedeji emplaced processes that ensure effective customer mapping and customer satisfaction journey.

He underscored his customer-centric approach to tax administration by saying, ‘We are committed to fair tax administration through responsive and accessible service to optimise revenue for national development.’

Notwithstanding these achievements, Adedeji remains focused on improving Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio, which is far below the African average. To address this, the FIRS has set an ambitious target to raise the ratio to 18% within the next few years.

As Adedeji embarks on his second year at the FIRS, Nigerians should expect more successes as he leverages his expertise to advance Nigeria’s economic growth and fiscal sustainability. With a clear vision and strategic roadmap, the FIRS is poised to continue playing a pivotal role in shaping the country’s future.

SNAPSONG 269

Another first day of another tenth month

Of yet another long year

The sun rose, wearily

From a sober corner of the sky

The rain this season

Is full and furiously free

The pampered lawns are glad

The battered roofs are sour

In other lands far, yet not-so-far

The sky rains red

From the cannibal carnival of ‘smart bombs’

By those who claim they own the world

In this long-suffering country we call our own

Awash with pledges, submerged in prayers

For sixty years and five we have asked many questions

Waiting for their vital answers

The rich still too rich

The poor too poor

Our schools still un-schooled

Our hospitals are horse-spittles

Our country, nonetheless

With blessings so abundant

Waiting, still waiting, for

The Promise which succeeds the Pain

Abuja is safe, says Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Saturday reassured residents that Abuja is a safe and secure city, while also highlighting significant progress on key infrastructure projects in the Wuye District and Kuje Area Council.

The Minister said this following a routine inspection of ongoing work on the Wuye District Infrastructure and the Federal Highway 105 from the Umar Musa Yar’Adua Expressway to Kuje township.

Responding to a question about security concerns in the nation’s capital, Wike, emphasised that there is improved security in the FCT, compared to what obtained in the past, stressing that isolated incidents of insecurity do not define the city’s overall safety.

‘If there is one safe city in this country, I think Abuja is that city,’ the Minister stated, noting that the ‘Light Up Abuja’ program, which involves installing solar streetlights across districts and expressways, is also a strategic initiative to further enhance security.

He said: ‘The problem we have here is that when one incident happens, we forget that three months ago, nothing happened. You should give us and the security agencies credit that we are doing quite a lot to make Abuja safe, and Abuja has been safe.

‘We do agree that something may happen but that does not mean that Abuja is not safe.I don’t want us to take that to mean that the city is not safe. If there is one safe city in this country, I think Abuja is that city’, Wike added.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with the pace and progress of ongoing projects, noting that Arab Contractors, the firm handling the Wuye District infrastructure, has assured that the project is nearing completion, with the road expected to be finished within 10 days.

Wike also praised the work on the Airport Road to Kuje dual carriageway, which he had visited multiple times.

The Minister noted that the 8-lane road will significantly reduce travel time, allowing Kuje residents to reach the city center in just 15 to 20 minutes.

He assured that the road will be inaugurated during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s third anniversary celebration.

He said: ‘For a regular passerby who knows this area very well, if you come here now, you will give it to them; Arab Contractor has done a good job. You can see how beautiful the landscape is. We believe that, God willing, just as they have promised, with our support, and we will continue to support. Latest, during the third anniversary of Mr. President, we believe that this road will be one of the roads that will be inaugurated to the delight of residents of Kuje and the entire people of Abuja, and of course to the happiness of all Nigerians.

‘The level of infrastructure is such that we have not seen before, and everybody will attest to the fact that if you are living in Kuje, you don’t need to go and find a house in the city to live. By the time this road is commissioned, which is not less than 8-lane dual carriageway, in about 15 or 20 minutes, you are already in the city centre and that’s what development is all about. That’s what the Renewed Hope Agenda is all about. So, we are happy’, the Minister stated.

Addressing sanitation challenges, Wike also confirmed that the FCT Administration is actively removing indiscriminately dumped refuse, particularly along Airport Road and in the Nyanya/Karshi area. He revealed plans to award new contracts for refuse disposal within the next two weeks, promising to select only competent contractors with the capacity to ensure that the city remains clean.

‘We believe that in the next two weeks, the contract will be formally awarded for refuse disposal. That, I can tell you, will help us quite a lot,’ he said.

Kwara killings: AbdulRazaq, Saraki in verbal war

Kwara State governor Abdulraman AbdulRazaq and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state are at each other’s throat over the current security challenges in the state.

While the governor traced current insecurity in parts of the state to bloody 2018 Offa robbery, the PDP said equating Offa robbery to the current situation amounted to executive cluelessness, asking AbdulRazaq to face his responsibility as the governor.

ý The PDP in the state had last Monday accused AbdulRazaq of failing to confront the escalating banditry crisis in the state.

The comment came on the heels of last Sunday’s deadly attack in Oke-Ode, Ifelodun Local Government Area, which left several residents and vigilante members dead.

The opposition party, in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, described the massacre as ‘a despicable and senseless act’ that had thrown the state into mourning, blaming the governor for what it called ‘monumental leadership failure.’

‘The gruesome videos of the casualties circulating online make it look like Kwara is now at war. Under AbdulRahman’s watch, terror is reigning, kidnappers are taking over rural villages, and nowhere is safe again.’

ýReacting to the remark at the weekend, Special Adviser to Governor AbdulRazaq on Media, Bashir Adigun, said: ‘The attention of Kwara State Government has been drawn to yet another uncouth, unintelligent, and desperate statement by the tattered opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), attempting to ‘trivialise the blood-soaked tragedy of the 2018 Offa robbery while trying to whitewash the dark legacy of 16 years of PDP misrule in Kwara.

‘Offa robbery was not just ‘a single bank robbery,’ as they arrogantly described it.

‘It was a national tragedy that claimed dozens of innocent lives, including mothers, fathers, students, children, and uniformed law enforcement officers, whose blood was spilled by criminals that had undeniable links with their political godfather.

ý’Kwarans have not forgotten that the RX Toyota mini-SUV used by the robbers bore the personalised plate number with Saraki’s name, and that the said vehicle was later hidden in a government ministry to evade justice.

ý’The PDP’s attempt to separate their bloody legacy from today’s security challenges is laughable.

‘This is the same party under which Kwara was turned into a theatre of fear, sorrow, cultism, and gangsterism-when so-called ‘Good Boys’ and political thugs unleashed terror on Ilorin residents and rural communities.’

For 16 years, he said, Kwara was a fiefdom under the Pharaoh-like grip of Saraki, until the people rose in a revolution in 2019 to reclaim their freedom.

ý’Governor AbdulRazaq has never shied away from acknowledging the nationwide challenge of banditry and insecurity. But Kwarans are wise enough to know that those who laid the foundation of bloodletting, impunity, and armed thuggery in this state cannot turn around today to pontificate about security.

ý’The PDP should cover its face in shame instead of attacking a Governor who, within six years, has rebuilt schools, upgraded hospitals, opened up rural roads, empowered women and youths, and given Kwarans a new lease of freedom and dignity.’

ýReacting, the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media Office took a swipe at the Kwara Sate governor.

The head of the media team, Yusuph Olaniyonu, in a statement signed by him, said: ‘Our attention had been drawn to the video clip of the statement made by Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq during his belated visit to Oke Ode where bandits recently killed 21 innocent persons in another episode in the series of violent attacks that have become daily occurrences across the Kwara South and North Senatorial Districts.

‘In a reckless manner that put on display his usual clueless and weird way of responding to issues, Abdulrazaq equated the frequent attack by bandits ravaging two of the three senatorial districts in the state with the Offa robbery incident and made false, defamatory, and irresponsible insinuations about former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki concerning the sad event that happened seven years ago.

‘Our view is that it is either insensitivity or a lack of capacity to appreciate and process issues that will make a governor equate the widespread killing, kidnapping, and maiming of people across two of the three senatorial districts with a robbery incident.

‘The state of insecurity has forced residents of over 50 communities in the two senatorial districts to abandon their homesteads and relocate to Ilorin or leave the state entirely.’

Continuing, he said: ‘If Dr. Saraki called the attention of the state governor and the entire government to the widespread violence against the people and called for action from federal agencies, it amounted to dereliction of duty, lack of valid appreciation of the plight of the people, and total disregard for the safety of the constituents for the governor to resort to throwing tantrums and blackmail over an unrelated incident that has nothing to do with the former Senate President.

‘This Office believes Dr. Saraki has achieved his objective if his statement has led to national attention being paid to the killings in Kwara State.

‘Also, Dr. Saraki’s speech had eventually compelled the governor to pay a visit to Oke Ode, one of the many towns that have witnessed killings, kidnappings, and maiming of innocent people.

‘The handling of the security situation has proven Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to be an incompetent, insensitive, irresponsible, clueless, and unresponsive governor.

‘Using the words of the governor, ‘it is laughable’ that a state governor whose state experienced the killing of 21 people in just one community with many others being killed in other communities waited for five days before visiting the affected town while he had the time to junket to another state outside his zone to rejoice with another governor in faraway Imo State who was commissioning projects for the benefit of his people.’

Olaniyonu said ‘now that he has been compelled to visit Oke Ode to assess the situation on the ground, we would like to know when he will visit other local government areas in the state like Edu, Patigi, Isin, Irepodun, Oke Ero, and other towns in Ifelodun that have been witnessing incessant attacks by the bandits.

‘Again, using Abdulrazaq’s words, ‘it is also laughable’ that after six and a half years as governor, one could count on the fingertips how many times the Kwara State Governor called a security council meeting in the state.

‘Dr. Saraki’s advice is that the governor needs to expand the membership of the Security Council to include all first and second class traditional rulers so as to engage them in fighting the menace.

‘If he fails to tackle the crisis squarely, it will define his eight years in office and this will be a horrible legacy to bequeath to his successor.’

Olaniyonu further said the governor made ‘reckless insinuations against Dr. Saraki because the former Senate President called him out on his failure to do his job.

‘We wonder what he would do to the Governors of the Southwest states who were reported in yesterday’s edition of the Punch Newspaper to have ‘Tighten Borders Amid Banditry Surge in Kwara’.

‘We also expect Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to descend on the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade who has expressed concern over the recent killings in Oke Ode.

‘Dr. Saraki is not interested in bandying words with the Kwara State Governor. His call is meant to get the governor to show more empathy for the plight of the people and live up to his responsibility as the state’s chief security officer.

‘It is obvious that never in the history of Kwara State has the State of Harmony witnessed this level of insecurity which is also being fueled by the insensitivity of the government of the day.

‘Like Dr. Saraki stated in his speech in Ilorin on September 27, 2025, we challenge anybody who has a contrary claim that there was any time in the past that Kwara State had been this unsafe and confronted by the threat to lives and property at this level to come up with the evidence.’

Speaking on the Offa robbery case which the governor brought up in the video under reference, Olaniyonu said: ‘The Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media Office would like to put on record for the benefit of the members of the public that Dr. Saraki has nothing to do with the Offa robbery incident.

‘This is a fact known to the powers that be then. It was also confirmed by the legal machinery of the federal government despite their hostility to the person and office that Dr. Saraki occupied at the time.

‘In two separate reports dated 22nd June, 2018, and 23rd August, 2018 respectively, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) of the Federation, in the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed U. E. stated that there was no evidence directly or indirectly linking Dr. Saraki to the Offa robbery.

‘We know that the Kwara State Governor will not only find it difficult to comprehend the contents of such reports, but he will also not believe the fact that one of the planks of the campaign of calumny which propelled him to the Governor’s Office has since collapsed like a pack of cards.’

In the video clip under reference, Olaniyonu said, ‘Abdulrazaq gave himself out on his dubious move that we have known all the while.

‘We knew that he had induced some family members of victims of the Offa robbery to file a civil case in court against the state government, himself as governor, and join Dr. Saraki as a party as a way of further embarrassing the former Senate President.

‘The fact is not lost on us that the lawyer defending the aide of the governor, Michael Yinka Fafoluyi, in a libel case filed by Dr. Saraki is also the same lawyer who has been briefed to handle the case filed on behalf of the so-called selected families of Offa robbery victims.

‘We also called the attention of members of the public to the press conference by some members of the Offa community under the platform of ‘Offa Koya, Offa Kowosi’ where they distanced the community from the dirty politics of using an unfortunate robbery incident as a tool of blackmail and smear campaign.’

He emphasised that some members of the families of the victims of the Offa robbery represented by Alhaji Abdul Oseni Aditu Eniolohunopa, Hajia Mulikat Jimoh, and Mrs. Danjuma Comfort on August 17, 2025, spoke on a radio Programme at the TNT Radio Station, Offa, where they publicly dissociated themselves from the malicious case in court and warned politicians to ‘stop seeking to score cheap political points at the expense of their grief’.

‘We would like the governor to know that if this slanderous and ridiculous statement he made at Oke Ode is his way of diverting attention from his failure to live up to his responsibility as the chief security officer of our dear state, then he has failed.’

The Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media Office advised Abdulrazaq to stop politicising the unfortunate plight of the victims of the Offa robbery and their families.

‘His devious scheme and dirty politics have delayed getting justice and closure for the victims, their families, and the Offa community,’ he said.
