Customs hands over seized donkey bones, skins to NESREA in Kaduna

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone B, Kaduna, has formally handed over a massive seizure of donkey bones and skins to the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

The Public Relations Officer of the Unit, Chief Superintendent of Customs, Saidu Nuruddeen, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Kaduna.

He noted that operatives intercepted 700 bags of donkey bones and 2,500 pieces of donkey skins in separate anti-smuggling operations. The items were handed over to Mr. Hene Emmanuel, NESREA’s Kaduna State Coordinator, during a brief ceremony.

Speaking at the event, Comptroller Aminu Sule, described the seizure as a major step in safeguarding Nigeria’s biodiversity. He stressed that the illegal slaughter and trade of donkey parts pose grave ecological and socioeconomic threats to rural communities where donkeys serve as a key source of livelihood and transportation.

‘The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to enforcing environmental laws, protecting endangered species, and preventing Nigeria from being used as a transit point for illegal wildlife trade,’ he said.

Comptroller Sule said the handover ‘sends a clear warning to traffickers and their collaborators: Nigeria will not tolerate environmental crime.’

According to him, the operation demonstrates the NCS’ resolve under the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, to deepen collaboration with partner agencies in line with his Three-Point Agenda of Collaboration, Consolidation, and Innovation.

He expressed appreciation to officers of the Unit and partner agencies for their dedication to protecting the nation’s natural resources. The Comptroller also called on communities, transporters, warehouse owners, and traders to support the Service by reporting suspicious activities linked to wildlife trafficking.

Lagos govt inaugurates taskforce on immunisation

In a bid to prevent diseases among the children in Lagos State, the State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has emphasised the importance of immunisation, urging parents to vaccinate their children and wards for a healthier future and a disease-free society.

Hamzat made the call on Tuesday, while speaking at an ‘Inaugural meeting of the Lagos State Taskforce on Immunisation and Primary Health Care Services’, held at the Conference Room, Office of the Deputy Governor, Roundhouse, Alausa, Ikeja, emphasising that vaccination remained one of the most effective means of protecting the children in the community ‘from life-threatening illnesses and ensuring their growth and development in good health.

This was just as he affirmed that immunisation was a collective responsibility that would not only secure the well-being of individual families but also contribute to building a healthier future and a disease-free society for Lagos State and Nigeria in general.

He also charged religious leaders and traditional rulers to collaborate with the state government in sensitising the people on the importance of vaccination and nutrition for their own children, noting that religious houses were always welcome to visit the government for clarification and enlightenment on the different policies put in place.

‘Our royal fathers must also help us in the community to spread the good news that we have been able to sustain our health conditions because of vaccination,’ Hamzat said.

The deputy governor, while using the COVID-19 pandemic as an example, said that contagious diseases had been eradicated in society because of the immunisation process carried out, pointing out that such efforts can be extended to other illnesses.

He emphasised the importance of the inaugural meeting, pointing out that it was crucial to include all stakeholders, such as the State Executives, members of the Primary Health Care Board, Traditional Rulers, Local Government Chairmen, Religious leaders, and others, due to the need for everybody to have an understanding of the severity of the challenge.

The Chairman, House Committee on Health, Hon. Lawal Aina, in his address, charged the Local Government Chairmen in the state to encourage the people in their constituencies to ensure their children and wards embrace the immunisation programme to ensure a disease-free environment.

‘I want to admonish us to intensify our efforts to do our best in encouraging our people to bring their children out for vaccination, as health education is a key responsibility of the chairmen in ensuring the good and well-being of the people,’ said Lawal.

In his opening remarks, the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, stated that the primary objective of primary healthcare was to increase the coverage for immunisation within the state.

Abayomi noted that human beings were living longer now because the world had advanced technologically to produce effective vaccines that eliminate both infections that cause immediate sickness and diseases that could lead to complications such as liver cirrhosis with hepatitis, cervical cancer with HPV, and malaria, which could cause significant depletion.

The commissioner further noted that to improve the immunisation uptake in Lagos, the state government needed to work on the aspects that make access to the primary healthcare more attractive to citizens, urging traditional rulers, Local Government chairmen, and stakeholders to collaborate with the government to further boost the capacity of the primary healthcare.

‘So, we are working diligently on renovating our primary healthcare platform. We know that many of you want to provide infrastructure to the state, and at the moment, we are doing 47 PHCs. So, I will be appealing to you to tag into this medical infrastructure transformation,’ he said.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Primary HealthCare Board, Dr Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustapha, in his welcome address, explained that the establishment of the taskforce reflects the second ‘H’ in the THEMES + agenda of the state government.

Mustapha said that the move was a strong commitment to strengthening Primary Health Care (PHC) governance, driving accountability, and ensuring that no one was left behind in accessing life-saving vaccines and essential health services, adding that the Taskforce had been constituted to provide a high-level platform for coordination, oversight, and problem-solving in the delivery of immunisation and other PHC services.

But, he also reassured confidence in the leadership of President Bola Tinubu to steer the country to better times, adding that the understanding shown by Nigerians is highly appreciated.

Akpabio’s appreciation was contained in his message to Nigerians as the country marks its 56th independence anniversary.

The Senate President specifically urged Nigerians to endure the pains of the reforms for now ‘in the interest of our children and future generations.’

His independence message, which Akpabio signed personally on Tuesday, read: ‘My dear resilient and wonderful people of this great nation, I wish to heartily congratulate you for witnessing Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary celebration. At 65, we are mature and should be working for the unity of the nation and the prosperity of our people.

Nigeria eyes seed market growth to drive food security, export revenue

The Minister of state for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, has reiterated that farmers across Nigeria must have access to affordable and high-quality seeds in order of the country to increase its agricultural yield and derive forex from export.

Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) evaluation mission team in Abuja yesterday, Abdullahi said seed quality remains the foundation of any agricultural system.

‘This is at the heart of what we do to support the President’s vision for food security. Farmers must and should have access to affordable, quality seed at all times. Our current yield gap as a country is worrisome, but we believe we can do better,’ the Minister stated.

He explained that beyond yield, good seeds should be pest and disease resistant, drought tolerant, and climate-smart.

Abdullahi further noted that such qualities would reduce dependence on agrochemicals, improve nutrition, and enhance the market value of Nigerian produce abroad.

‘We are not sleeping over the challenge of high residues in our export produce. Different countries have different tolerance levels, and we must ensure our farmers have the knowledge and tools to meet these standards,’ he noted.

The Minister acknowledged gaps in Nigeria’s seed system, pointing out that nearly 70 percent of seed demand is met through informal sources.

He however, stressed the need for more inspectors, stronger regulations, and a crackdown on fraudulent practices. ‘There are people who claim to be seed entrepreneurs but supply grains instead of certified seeds. Without proper oversight, our farmers will continue to suffer,’ he said.

Welcoming the OECD mission, Abdullahi assured that Nigeria would continue to align with international best practices and expand opportunities for seed entrepreneurs.

‘We want to do all-year farming, expand irrigation, and develop varieties suited for our environment. Nigeria is the next hope for seed entrepreneurs to look at,’ he said.

In his remarks, the Director-General of the National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC), Dr. Fatuhu Muhammadu, highlighted Nigeria’s progress since joining the OECD Seed Schemes in 2023.

He noted that the country now serves as secretary of the OECD Africa Forum and has trained seed system actors from several West and Central African countries.

OECD seed scheme officers Ms. Aurelia Nicault and Mr. Rouillard Christophe in her remarks, commended Nigeria’s commitment to improving its seed system.

‘The OECD schemes contribute to food security goals and sustainable agriculture. We cannot do anything in the future without seed’, she noted.

Nicault added that Nigeria’s membership would boost trade within ECOWAS and beyond, saying: ‘High-quality seeds will not only secure food for Nigeria but also strengthen its economic growth.’

Non-service stalls Sowore’s arraignment in Tinubu’s defamation case

Non-service of charge sheet on Tuesday stalled the arraignment of former Presidential aspirant, Omoyele Sowore, X Incorporation (formerly Twitter), and Meta (Facebook) Incorporation before a Federal High Court in Abuja over an alleged false claim against the person of President Bola Tinubu by tagging him ‘a criminal.’

The Federal Government had earlier slated Tuesday, September 30, to arraign Sowore and his co-defendants on a five-count charge before Justice Mohammed Umar, but when the case was called for the arraignment, counsel for Sowore, Abubakar Marshall, objected on the ground that his client was not served with the charge sheet three days before the arraignment as required by law.

Similarly, he said, the second defendant had also not been served, and since the trial is on a joint charge, the arraignment cannot be held.
