Atalanta head coach Ivan Juric has played down his touchline altercation with Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman during their 1-0 victory over Olympique Marseille on Wednesday night.

Former Big Brother Naija housemate Adekunle Olopade has accused police operatives of detaining him for eight hours.

The reality TV personality, known for his time in the ‘Level Up’ season, shared the disturbing experience on his snap chat page, alleging he was manhandled, handcuffed, and held against his will.

He described the incident as a near-death ordeal that was only averted by what he called divine intervention.

‘What a night! Kidnapped, harassed, and handcuffed by the Nigerian Police Force in the last 8 hours. This story could have ended differently, and no one would have known. But glory be to God, I’m alive today,’ he wrote.

The Hadejia/Auyo/Kafin-Hausa Coalition for Development (HAKCOD) in Jigawa State has faulted the decision of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to institute legal action against the leadership of the National Assembly over what it described as ‘baseless and politically motivated allegations’ against the member representing Hadejia/Auyo/Kafin-Hausa Federal Constituency, Hon. Usman Kamfani Auyo.

In a statement by its Chairman, Comrade Abubakar Maje Ahmed, the group accused SERAP of ‘acting hastily on falsehoods and political propaganda’ peddled by opponents of the lawmaker.

HAKCOD described the planned lawsuit as ‘a reckless attempt to undermine the integrity of an elected representative and distract him from his legislative responsibilities.’

‘The decision by SERAP to proceed with legal action based on unfounded claims is not only unjust but also a direct insult to the collective integrity of the people of Hadejia, Auyo, and Kafin-Hausa.

‘Hon. Usman Kamfani Auyo has been an exemplary representative, focusing on youth empowerment, education, and infrastructural development across the constituency. It is unfortunate that some political actors have resorted to distortion and blackmail to achieve their selfish aims.’

According to the group, the controversy originated in August 2025, following a media interaction in which Hon. Auyo allegedly stated that lawmakers were required to make payments before sponsoring bills in the National Assembly – a claim which HAKCOD insists was ‘deliberately twisted’ by political detractors.

It clarified that the lawmaker merely explained that some legislators voluntarily spend personal funds – sometimes up to ?3 million – to engage consultants who assist in preparing draft bills or motions before they are presented, emphasising that such expenses were not bribes or mandatory fees.

‘At no point did Hon. Usman Auyo suggest that payments are made to facilitate legislative processes. What he described was a common professional practice across many parliaments, where lawmakers hire experts to refine their legislative proposals,’ the statement added.

HAKCOD further alleged that some opposition figures within Jigawa State seized the opportunity to ‘feed SERAP with misleading narratives,’ prompting the organization to embark on a misguided legal crusade.

‘We urge SERAP, as an organization known for promoting transparency and accountability, to cross-check its facts before taking actions capable of damaging reputations or undermining public trust in democratic institutions,’ HAKCOD said.

The coalition also called on the National Assembly leadership and the general public to disregard what it termed ‘sensationalized claims,’ insisting that Hon. Auyo remains committed to credible representation and good governance.

HAKCOD concluded by urging civil society groups to exercise due diligence and maintain objectivity in their advocacy, warning that ‘politically influenced actions’ could erode citizens’ confidence in democratic accountability initiatives.

‘We stand firmly by our representative. Any attempt to malign him is an attack on the will and dignity of our people,’ the statement concluded.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, on Thursday, announced that the next phase of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms will focus on removing barriers to investment, optimising national assets and stimulating productivity across key sectors to accelerate growth to seven percent per annum by 2027.

Addressing the Federal Executive Council (FEC) just before its meeting commenced at the State House, Abuja, Edun said the forthcoming reforms will include tariff and import policy reviews, improved fiscal reporting, tighter expenditure controls, and a detailed reassessment of both federal and federation balance sheets to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth.

‘The next phase of reforms will remove barriers holding back investors. We will review tariffs and import restrictions to stimulate productivity and investment. A detailed review of the Federation and Federal Balance Sheets is underway to optimize asset management for inclusive growth,’ the Minister said.

He added that Ministers overseeing infrastructure, mining, education, health, agriculture, blue economy, digital innovation, and culture must work with State Governments to package investment-ready projects capable of crowding in large-scale domestic and foreign capital.

Edun reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2030, saying that Nigeria must ‘accelerate output to 7% per annum growth by 2027, not just as an economic target but as a moral imperative to end poverty.’

Providing an update on key economic indicators, the Minister reported that Nigeria’s GDP grew by 4.23% in Q2 2025, the highest in a decade outside the COVID rebound, with 13 sectors recording growth above 7%.

The industrial sector, he said, nearly doubled its growth from 3.72% to 7.45%, reflecting strong investor confidence.

He also disclosed that inflation eased to 18% in December, external reserves topped $43 billion, and trade surplus rose to ?7.4 trillion, marking clear evidence of macroeconomic stability.

Edun noted that the recent $2.35 billion Eurobond issuance, which was oversubscribed by over $13 billion, demonstrated international confidence in Nigeria’s economic direction and in President Tinubu’s leadership, ‘despite political headwinds.’

‘The market shrugged off those political considerations and focused on the economic fundamentals of Nigeria,’ he said, adding that the removal of Nigeria from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list and the IMF’s revised growth forecast were further proof that ‘global leaders commend our reforms and progress.’

He emphasised prudent fiscal management, saying ‘every naira must be optimised to sustain momentum amid global liquidity constraints, where there is less coming from multilateral institutions, we have to depend on our own resources.’

The federal government has entered into a new partnership with the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity for local production of vaccines, medicines, and nutrition commodities.

The two-year initiative, Enabling Local Manufacturing of Health, Immunisation and Nutrition Commodities in Nigeria (ELM-N), is part of the EU’s Global Gateway Manufacturing and Access to Vaccines, Medicines and Health Technologies (MAV+) programme, valued at pound 6.3 million, with the EU contributing pound 5.5 million and Spain providing an additional pound 800,000.

The agreement, which was formalised at the Nigeria-EU Health Investment Forum in Abuja, seeks to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported health products by enhancing local manufacturing, improving supply-chain efficiency, strengthening regulatory systems, and fostering technology transfer and innovation.

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, described the initiative as a major step in Nigeria’s plan to build a stronger, more competitive pharmaceutical sector and attract sustainable investment.

‘This partnership demonstrates our commitment to aligning investments with clear policy priorities and measurable outcomes.

‘It will expand opportunities for local production, facility financing, and technology transfer, positioning Nigeria as a regional hub for health innovation, research, and development,’ Bagudu said.

EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, who represented Team Europe, said the Global Gateway strategy aims to transition partnerships from aid-based support to strategic, investment-driven collaboration.

‘Through MAV+, we are supporting manufacturers, governments, academic institutions, and other key stakeholders in advancing local production.

‘This represents a shift toward peer-to-peer partnerships between Europe and West Africa,’ Mignot said.

Additionally, Spain’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Félix Costales Artieda, noted that the collaboration would not only advance local manufacturing but also enhance equitable access to essential health commodities across the ECOWAS subregion.

‘This project marks an important milestone in unlocking Nigeria’s healthcare value chain and boosting health security,’ he said.

Representing the United Nations (UN) system, UNICEF’s Representative to Nigeria, Wafaa Abdelate, who spoke on behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator, highlighted that local production remains vital to achieving universal access to life-saving health products.

She noted that Nigeria still has more than two million zero-dose children and faces significant maternal health challenges.

‘It is urgent that investments like this translate into timely, affordable, and safe access to vaccines, medicines, and nutrition products for all Nigerians,’ Abdelate added.

According to the project’s framework, ELM-N will focus on strengthening Nigeria’s health commodity supply chain, promoting innovation in pharmaceutical production, and supporting regulatory harmonisation.

It will also complement ongoing national reforms aimed at revitalising the local pharmaceutical industry and align with broader EU and multilateral efforts in reproductive, maternal, and child health as well as digital health development.

Implementation is expected to commence immediately, with stakeholders set to identify potential manufacturers, assess investment needs, and deploy technical assistance to accelerate local production and distribution of essential health commodities.

The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, has commended Bloggers and Vloggers, Content Creators Association of Nigeria (BAVCCA) for promoting responsible digital media.

The judge gave the commendation when the leadership of BAVCCA paid him a visit on Wednesday.

The visit focused on strengthening collaboration between the judiciary and the digital media community.

Speaking during the visit, BAVCCA President, Mr. Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, said the association represents a nationwide network of over 5,000 professional bloggers, vloggers, and digital content creators dedicated to promoting ethical online practices and digital accountability in Nigeria.

He stated that the visit was aimed at fostering mutual understanding and partnership between the judiciary and the digital media sector, noting that both institutions play vital roles in promoting justice, transparency, and public enlightenment.

‘Your Lordship, our visit today is to pay our respects to the judiciary, seek partnership for responsible online reportage, and establish a framework for collaboration in public education, legal awareness, and digital justice literacy,’ Chukwunyere said.

The BAVCCA President emphasised the association’s commitment to promoting responsible online behavior among digital creators, adding that the group is already working on a Digital Responsibility and Judicial Awareness Campaign targeted at educating over 10 million social media users on ethical content creation and respect for judicial processes.

The Senate at plenary on Thursday confirmed the nomination of Dr Kingsley Udeh for appointment as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the confirmation of Udeh, who is the current Attorney -General and Commissioner of Justice in Enugu State, followed his screening by the Committee of the Whole.

Udeh, while responding to questions from senators, said given his strong background in research and academics, years of governance experience, and as a developmental expert, he would add value to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

According to him, he will serve the country diligently, if sworn in as a member of the Federal Executive Council.

President of Senate, Godswill Akpabio, after the confirmation, said ‘Udeh is a suitable choice for ministerial appointment.
