What to know as WhatsApp launches Apple Watch app

Popular messaging app, WhatsApp, has officially launched its long-anticipated app for the Apple Watch – a move that finally brings one of the world’s most popular messaging platforms to users’ wrists.

The release, according to WhatsApp, marks a major milestone for the Meta-owned company as it expands WhatsApp’s accessibility beyond smartphones and computers, strengthening its position in the smartwatch market.

WhatsApp announced the rollout in a blog post, saying the new experience is designed to help users stay on top of their chats without pulling out their iPhone.

For the first time, users can reply to messages with emojis, see clearer photos and stickers, and access more of their chat history directly on the watch display.

The Features at a Glance

See who’s calling without needing to look at your iPhone.

See more of your chat history on screen when reading messages.

These updates, the announcement added, make WhatsApp one of the most functional messaging apps now available on watchOS.

Privacy and Security Remain Intact

WhatsApp confirmed that end-to-end encryption still applies to all personal messages and calls on the Apple Watch, maintaining the same privacy standards available on mobile and desktop versions.

‘As always, your personal messages and calls remain private,’ the company stated.

To use the new app, you’ll need:

Man sentenced to three years in prison over N8.56bn fraud

The Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday convicted and sentenced one Samuel Ihechukwu Asiegbu to three years’ imprisonment without an option of fine for his role in an N8.56 billion fraud targeting a commercial bank.

Justice Rahman Oshodi delivered the judgment after Asiegbu changed his initial ‘not guilty’ plea to guilty.

Asiegbu was initially arraigned on June 23, 2025, alongside other defendants, on a four-count charge that included conspiracy, stealing, and unauthorised access to a computer system with intent to commit fraud.

The conviction centred on counts three and four, which detailed the unauthorised access to Wema Bank’s computer systems to facilitate the theft of the aggregate sum of N8,568,090,500.

Count four specifically cited the unauthorised access to the bank’s computer and server with the intent to steal the massive sum.

Justice Oshodi sentenced Asiegbu to 10 months and 8 days on count three and 1 year and 8 months on count four.

The sentences are to run concurrently, totalling a three-year jail term. Counts one and two were subsequently struck out.

The judge affirmed that no option for a fine would be granted for the offences. The trial for the remaining defendants, including Hamza Zakaria and Nurudeen Ibrahim, will continue.

Justice Oshodi adjourned to November 14, 2025, for further proceedings against the other accused persons.

FG launches N10m interest-free loan scheme for tertiary institution workers

The Federal Government, on Wednesday, launched the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF), an initiative designed to improve the welfare and motivation of academic and non-academic staff across Nigeria’s higher institutions.

The launch, held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), was presided over by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmed, with the participation of key stakeholders in the education and financial sectors, including the Bank of Industry (BOI).

Unveiling the scheme, Alausa said the TISSF provides interest-free loans of up to N10 million to qualified staff of tertiary institutions.

According to Alausa, the initiative, which aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is part of government efforts to enhance the welfare of education workers and strengthen the nation’s human capital base.

He disclosed that over 33,000 applications were received, out of which 9,000 staff members have been approved, representing nearly 30 per cent of the total applicants.

He noted that of the initial beneficiaries, about 30 per cent were academic staff, while 70 per cent were non-academic, reflecting the composition of staff in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

He said the facility will support housing, healthcare, education, transportation, and small-scale business needs of tertiary institution staff.

He emphasised that the facility was carefully structured to allow for flexible repayment terms, explaining that beneficiaries would not be required to make any repayment within the first 24 months, while total repayment could extend between five to seven years.

‘This fund is designed to support staff welfare in practical ways, housing, healthcare, transportation, small businesses, children’s education, and other social needs. We know that government salaries alone are not enough, and this is an additional lifeline to help our educators live decent and productive lives.

‘We have a President that believes so much in you and appreciates you because he knows the kind of work you’re doing in building our country. That’s why we came up with TISSF.

‘Within four months, we moved from announcement to actualisation, and the first batch of beneficiaries are already getting their funds. This is an interest-free loan. For the first 24 months, beneficiaries won’t pay back the principal, and repayment is spread across five to seven years,’ he said.

Alausa addressed concerns raised by some staff unions, particularly the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), clarifying that the TISSF was not a replacement for ongoing negotiations on improved salaries and working conditions.

He said, ‘I saw some ASUU members say, ‘That’s not what we want.’ But this is support, an additional layer of welfare. As we continue talks with ASUU, COEASU, and other unions, the TISSF remains a parallel welfare mechanism.’

Alausa also urged staff unions not to view the scheme as a substitute for ongoing welfare negotiations with the government, but as an additional layer of support aimed at improving living standards in the education sector.

He said the Ministry of Education is also developing complementary programs focused on training, capacity building, and staff development as part of the broader education sector reform.

He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment towards revitalising tertiary education and ensuring that Nigerian institutions compete globally through motivated and well-supported personnel.

‘This is just the beginning,’ Alausa said. ‘Our goal is to build a system where every educator feels valued, supported, and empowered to contribute to national development.’

In her remarks, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmed, described the TISSF as a visionary intervention aimed at stabilising Nigeria’s tertiary education system through improved staff welfare and institutional sustainability.

She said, ‘This fund comes at a crucial time in our national development journey. As we build a knowledge-driven economy, the strength of our tertiary education system depends on the quality and well-being of its workforce.

‘Without welfare and motivation, learning becomes difficult. The TISSF is a sustainable, transparent mechanism to uplift the men and women who sustain the heart of our tertiary institutions.’

Ahmed highlighted that lecturers, researchers, technologists, and administrative staff remain the backbone of the education system, nurturing Nigeria’s human capital and upholding academic standards despite resource constraints and increasing workloads.

She said, ‘We are aware of the growing pressures on our system, expanding enrolment, limited funding, and the rising cost of living. The TISSF provides a sustainable solution that supports staff capacity, motivation, and welfare in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.’

The minister commended the Bank of Industry and other partners who contributed to the design and execution of the initiative, stressing that the government views investment in educators as an investment in the nation’s future.

‘Let us work together to make TISSF a transparent, sustainable, and impactful mechanism that uplifts the men and women who sustain the heart of our tertiary institutions,’ she added.

The Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, appreciated the Federal Government for the development in the school and appealed to the Federal Government to ensure continuous peace and stability in Nigerian universities to prevent disruptions in academic activities.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for selecting FUTA as one of the beneficiaries of the $1 billion Commercial Aid Initiative, describing it as recognition of the university’s research-intensive status.

She commended the Minister for efforts toward maintaining peace within the tertiary education system but appealed for government intervention to prevent industrial actions that could lead to campus closures.

‘Please, whatever you can do to ensure that our universities remain open, kindly assist us. The burden of implementing directives such as no work, no pay rests heavily on the Vice-Chancellors,’ she said.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasised the impact of strikes on students and families, describing prolonged academic disruptions as detrimental to national development.

‘As a community, we feel the pain more seeing our children at home doing nothing – it’s like generations wasting away,’ she added.

She also called the Minister’s attention to the university’s young medical school, seeking further support to strengthen and equip the facility for better service delivery.

Germany hails Nigeria’s war on terrorism

The Government of Germany has commended Nigeria’s war on terrorism.

The government also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria in the area of security.

The German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, disclosed this during a meeting with his Nigerian counterpart, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, in Berlin, as both nations marked 65 years of diplomatic relations.

According to a statement by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Senior Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to Tuggar, Nigeria and Germany renewed their commitment to deepening cooperation under the framework of the Nigeria-Germany Bi-National Commission.

He said Germany praised Nigeria’s ongoing efforts in combating terrorism, describing the country as a valued and reliable partner for the European Union in the fight against radical Islamist extremism.

The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s leadership in stabilising the Lake Chad Basin and its continued cooperation with regional and international partners to counter violent extremism.

‘Germany reaffirms its commitment to supporting Nigeria through capacity building, intelligence sharing, and humanitarian assistance aimed at restoring peace and development in affected regions,’ the statement added.

Invasion of PDP secretariat direct assault on democratic values – Olabode George

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has strongly condemned the invasion and deployment of uniformed personnel into the party’s National Headquarters in Abuja, describing the move as a direct assault on democratic values and the freedom of political association guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.

Chief George expressed this concern on Wednesday at a press conference, which took place at his Ikoyi, Lagos office, just as he equally condemned the court order aimed at stopping the PDP National Convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, between November 15 and 16, 2025 as an attempt to silence the major opposition party.

Besides, the PDP chieftain said the action not only undermined public confidence and threatened national stability, but also ‘sends a dangerous signal to the international community about the state of democracy in Nigeria.’

This was just as he quickly warned that this was how the Western Region crisis started in 1962, which, he said pitiably led to the collapse of the First Republic, adding: ‘It was the same scenario that played out in the old Ondo State in 1983 that led to the disintegration of the Second Republic, eventually plunging Nigeria into turmoil.’

‘The deployment of uniformed personnel into the private chambers of a major political party is a direct assault on democratic values and the freedom of political association, guaranteed by our Constitution.

‘This action undermines public confidence, threatens national stability, and sends a dangerous signal to the international community about the state of democracy in Nigeria,’ George said.

George, while describing the PDP as a responsible political party that remains committed to peace, unity, and the defense of democracy, called on the Presidency and the leadership of the nation’s security agencies to immediately investigate and withdraw all personnel involved in the illegal operation.

This was precisely as he had urged for restraint, dialogue, and a recommitment to civilized democratic conduct, saying that such an approach was needed right now.

‘We call on all stakeholders-particularly the Presidency, the National Security Adviser, and the leadership of Nigeria’s security agencies-to immediately investigate and withdraw all personnel involved in this illegal operation. The sanctity of political institutions must be preserved.

‘Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads. What is needed now is restraint, dialogue, and a recommitment to civilised democratic conduct. The People’s Democratic Party remains committed to peace, unity, and the defence of democracy,’ he said.

‘As I said earlier, this was how the Western Region crisis started in 1962, which pitiably led to the collapse of the First Republic.

‘It was the same scenario that played out in the old Ondo State in 1983 that led to the disintegration of the Second Republic, eventually plunging Nigeria into turmoil. History must not be allowed to repeat itself,’ he warned.

On the ruling given by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court stopping the PDP from holding its convention, Chief George described the verdict as simply an interference in the internal affairs of the party, saying that it portrayed him as indirectly working for the ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP chieftain maintained that his ruling negated the judgement delivered by the Supreme Court which stated that party convention and congress were internal affairs which judiciary had no power to dabble into.

‘In his judgement stopping the PDP Convention, Justice Omotosho is trying to force his personal judicial opinion into the sacred judicial interpretation of the Apex court of the land.

‘The Supreme Court said judiciary has no right to dabble into party’s internal affairs. So, on this judgement, Justice Omotosho is clearly wrong. This is judicial rascality. It should be condemned by all Nigerians,’ he said.

George further condemned the verdict, alleging that the move made by Justice Omotosho was an attempt to set Nigeria on fire, and, therefore, called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun and the Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC) to call Justice Omotosho and his likes to order.

‘Justice Omotosho wants to set Nigeria on fire and destroy this democracy the way First and Second Republics were destroyed by some judges and political class.

‘His judgement is the joke of the century, open recipe for anarchy and a display of judicial brigandage.

‘I call on the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council to call this judge to order. Any judgment capable of leading to a breakdown of law and order should be avoided.

‘What power does he have to order the PDP not to have its National Convention? Has the judiciary gone to the dogs?’ he queried.

FCCPC shuts five textile warehouses in Kano

Operatives of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have shut the warehouses of five textile distributors engaged in unethical business practices.

The agency alleged they were engaged in the deceptive sale of underweight and shortened fabric materials to unsuspecting consumers in breach of the provisions of the FCCPA (2018).

The enforcement exercise by the Commission was led by its Director of Surveillance and Investigation, Mrs. Boladale Adeyinka.

A statement by FCCPC Director of Corporate Affairs Ondaje Ijagwu explained: ‘Today’s action is a culmination of weeks-long surveillance around Kano markets by FCCPC and the establishment of the prevalence of the sale of fabric materials significantly below the standard length or measurement indicated by retailers, while charging consumers the full price.

‘Section 123(1) of the FCCPA states that no retailer, trader or supplier shall, in the course of trade or for the purpose of promoting or marketing any goods, make any representation to a consumer in a manner that is false, misleading, erroneous, or deceptive in any way, including in respect of the quantity or price at which goods are supplied.

‘Similarly, Section 125(1) prohibits any undertaking from engaging in conduct that directly or indirectly implies a false or misleading representation concerning a material fact to a consumer or prospective consumer.’

He informed the textile products involved in the sharp practices include LGR Product, U and Me Product, Nana Tex Product, V Levintus Product and Mama Africa Product, Hightex Product, UE Product, S-U Velt Product and Jisiki Product.

The agency said the products were imported, marketed, distributed, advertised and warehoused at Nos 238, 249, 313, 315, 413 and 428 Gandun Abada Layout; Nos 38 and 40 Ibrahim Taiwo Road; No 87 Bua Rice Mills Street; Links I, II and III Ajasa Inuwa Wada Road and No 287 Gandun Albasa New Layout in Kano city.

EVC/CEO of FCCPC, Tunji Bello, reiterated the Commission’s zero tolerance for any practice that exploits Nigerian consumers or distorts market or threatens fair competition.

‘By undermining honest traders and businesses that comply with lawful standards, this nefarious practice of selling underweight products can drive legitimate retailers out of the market, thereby reducing consumer choice and entrenching anti-competitive behaviour,’ the FCCPC boss said.

He reassured the Commission will continue to deploy lawful means to deter such exploitative conduct in all markets across Nigeria.

Bello commended the diligence of the FCCPC team involved in the operation and thanked the security agencies for their cooperation in the exercise.

Alleged defamation: Sowore escapes arrest warrant over absence in Court

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 presidential election, Omoyele Sowore on Wednesday, escaped arrest warrant following his failure to appear before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja for arraignment on charges bordering on defamation.

During proceedings on Wednesday, Counsel to the Department of the State Service (DSS), Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN had urged the trial Judge, Justice Mohammed Umar to issue a bench warrant against Sowore for being absent in court without justification, having been served the charges and hearing notice from the last adjourned date.

The DSS counsel said, the action of Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, refusing to come to court, despite being served with the charges is an affront to the sanctity of the court and must be treated with punishment such behavior deserved

The senior lawyer urged the Judge to invoke his inherent power to issue bench warrant for the arrest of the defendant by security agents wherever he may be.

The trial Judge, Justice Mohammed Umar however noted that the order for bench warrant will not subsist for now, following the submission of the 2nd defendant, X Corporation that they have not been served the charge sheet even though they received hearing notice.

Justice Umar then directed that all parties should be duly served and then adjourned the case till December 2, 2025 for arraignment of the defendants.

Meanwhile, counsel to X Corporation, Christabel Ndiokwelo told the court that the complainant had yet to serve the formal charges on their client, noting that, only a hearing notice had been served earlier.

Earlier in the proceeding, the DSS lawyer had drawn the attention of the court to a letter by a counsel, Deji Adeyanju, calling for an adjournment in the case, hence his request for a bench warrant, noting that Sowore is only taking the court for granted.

Meta (Facebook) Inc, through their lawyer, Tayo Oyetibo, SAN, aligned himself with the prosecution’s request for a bench warrant against Sowore, stating that the 1st defendant had accused them of taking sides with the prosecution.

Oyetibo noted that the letter for adjournment is a from of distraction as Sowore knows what he is doing.

After taking arguments, Justice Umar fixed December 2 for arraignment of all the defendants and also directed that hearing notice must be served on them.

Osimhen’s hatrrick humble Ajax 3-0 in UCL

Victor Osimhen delivered a masterclass on Wednesday night, powering Galatasaray to a dominant 3-0 win over Ajax in the UEFA Champions League with a dazzling hattrick in Amsterdam.

The Nigerian striker was in unstoppable form at the Johan Cruyff Arena, finding the net three times in a performance that left Ajax’s defence in disarray.

He broke the deadlock in the 59th minute with a precise finish, then doubled the lead six minutes later from the penalty spot after being brought down in the area.

Osimhen completed his hat trick in the 78th minute with another assured penalty before making way for Mauro Icardi to a standing ovation from both sets of supporters.

The emphatic victory boosted Galatasaray’s chances of advancing from the group stage and underlined Osimhen’s reputation as one of Europe’s most lethal forwards. With nine goals in his last seven games, the 26-year-old continues to prove why he is among the continent’s elite.

‘It’s not about me – it’s about the team,’ Osimhen said after the match. ‘We came here with a plan and executed it perfectly. I’m happy to contribute with goals, but what matters most is the win.’
