Police arrest Amotekun operatives over killings in Osun community

Spokesperson of the Amotekun operatives in Osun State, Yusuf Idowu, has claimed that the state command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested no fewer than 20 of its operatives in connection with the killings of Akinlalu people.

Amotekun spokesperson made this known in an interview in Osogbo on Wednesday. However, Police spokesperson has countered that the claim, clarifying that five people were arrested.

According to Yusuf, the arrest was carried out on Wednesday by a special police squad from the headquarters in Abuja.

It was learnt that after the arrest, the command office at Oke-fia in Osogbo was sealed but others were not.

Commenting further on the matter, Yusuf confirmed the arrest of some operatives of the Corps.

He said, ‘Some policemen came, but they didn’t seal our headquarters (Powerline Office). They burst our operation base in Oke-Fia and the Ife Central command.

‘They also arrested about 20 of our operatives at Oke-Fia and Ife Central Command in connection with Akinlalu killing. They came in respect of the Akinlalu incident. The policemen are still at Oke-Fia, and we don’t know where they took our personnel that they arrested’.

However, Osun state police command in a separate statement said the command has arrestedý five suspects in connection with the alleged killing of Ibrahim Oyebamiji (m), 26yrs, Sefiu Oyebamiji (m) and Abiola Olutayo (m).

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, who made this known in a statement in Osogbo, said efforts are on top gear to arrest other suspects at large.

‘It would be recalled that on 30th September, 2025 at about 1320hrs, information received from Chief Oyebamiji Kamorudeen of Akinlalu that members of Western security network also known as Amotekun came in large numbers and invaded Akinlalu community with their two official patrol and one private vehicles in retaliation for the two pump action guns earlier allegedly snatched from their operatives by yet to be identified person(s).

‘And that during the invasion, they shot sporadically which caused serious bullet injuries on the following people namely: Adeagbo Kadijat ‘f’ 22yrs, Oke-Ila Oyebamiji ‘f’ 60yrs and Fayomi Toheeb ‘m’ 19yrs.

ý’It was further alleged that, three persons lost their lives during the shooting, namely: Ibrahim Oyebamiji (m), 26yrs, Sefiu Oyebamiji (m) and Abiola Olutayo (m) ýand their corpses were taken away by Amotekun operatives.

ý’Investigation carried out by the Police revealed that, the attackers are members of Amotekun Corps and individuals were mentioned to have masterminded the attack which victims and witnesses of the attack said they can identify them if seen.

ý’Meanwhile, five suspects have been arrested in connection with the case; efforts are on top gear to arrest other suspects at large.

‘The Commander of Amotekun Corps has been invited to clarify his roles played in the entire episode of the attack.

‘He has refused to honour the invitation and equally efforts made to reach him on phone proved abortive as his phone has been switched off, only for him to come on social media on 6th October, 2025 and put up a claim of being attacked by unknown armed men wearing mask which preliminary enquiry reveals to be a figment of his own imagination aimed at concealing the truth and derailing the course of justice to the victims.

ý’Osun State remains very peaceful as Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun Ph.D, NPM has ordered the elite investigative body of the Force, the IRT-FID to take over the case.

‘The Command urges the public to disregard such unsubstantiated claim and go about their lawful businesses. Police remain focus in maintaining the peace which Osun State has always been known for,’ the PRO statement said.

LP senator defects to APC in Enugu

Another member of the Labour Party (LP), Senator Kelvin Chukwu, from Enugu East, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday.

Chukwu blamed his decision on ‘internal wranglings’ within the LP, a move that reduced the number of LP senators to just four (4), while the APC climbed further up in its majority dominance to 69.

The defection came as the Senate received two new members.

Senator Nwachukwu Emmanuel Chibuzor of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) replaced the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah (Anambra South), while Senator Ikpea Joseph Igiagbe was inaugurated to replace the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo (Edo Central).

In his defection letter, Chukwu wrote, ‘I write to formally notify you and my distinguished colleagues in the Nigerian Senate of my decision to resign my membership of the Labour Party and to join the All Progressives Congress effective immediately.

‘This decision was reached after extensive consultations with my constituents in my senatorial district, my political associates and stakeholders across various levels in Enugu State.

‘It is a reflection of my commitment to aligning with a platform that works, and I believe I’ll do better and represent the collective interest of my people better.

‘I’ll bring more dividends of democracy; I’ll meet the aspirations of the good people of Enugu East Senatorial District and Nigerians at large.

‘Recent developments, including internal wranglings, leadership crises, policy disagreements, lack of cohesion, lack of direction.

‘Lack of focus at both the state and national levels have made it increasingly difficult for me to effectively discharge my duties to represent my constituents under its banner.

‘These challenges have undermined the core values and principles upon which the Labour Party was initially founded.

‘After careful reflection, I am convinced that the All Progressives Congress, under the leadership of the performing President, President Bola Tinubu, provides a more stable, more progressive, more inclusive platform.

‘For achieving our shared goals of economic growth, good governance, national unity, national cohesion, social development and progress for the nation called Nigeria.

‘I remain committed to serving the great people of Enugu East Senatorial Zone and the Nigerian people with integrity, with diligence and patriotism.

‘And I assure you of my continued contributions to the work of the 10th Senate in the service of our fatherland.’

Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, congratulated Akpabio as the Chairman of the National Assembly, President Tinubu and all APC lawmakers in the National Assembly on the gale of defections in the country.

‘I am congratulating all of us because what is happening is not just by an accident of history. What is happening is in direct response to the new thing happening to Nigeria.

‘The APC-led government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is working, and regardless of what anyone would have thought a year ago or two years ago, it is becoming obvious to Nigerians that we are making a difference,’ he said.

Speaking, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, said, ‘I have always worried about the left side of the aisle but I’m no longer worried. If they like, let them all move here.

‘Your discretion living in a tattered house is hereby accepted.’

He added, ‘I want a strong and vibrant opposition in Nigeria, but where they are not able to organise themselves, and all the political parties are in tatters, then the right thing for them to do is to join me and join Mr President.

‘So that we can move this country forward. We are not going to have one-party system; that is why INEC is registering more parties.

‘Please put your house in order. I have been looking at the way you are getting depleted on a daily basis, and I am in total sympathy with what is going on.

‘The PDP is on the ground, the Umbrella is torn, the Labour Party is scattered.’

But the mention of PDP drew the displeasure of the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Abba Moro, who interjected, ‘With due respect and without prejudice to some achievements that Mr President has made, I want to say that no matter the number that are here (the opposition), we are capable of holding our own.

‘You said all politics are local. Those who are gravitating towards the majority side are exercising their rights.

‘But my brother and friend, Kelvin, who has just left the third row here, to go to the last row there, I wish him good luck.

‘Mr President, when it was announced that he was going, and he said he had made adequate consultations, I asked the question, Who have you consulted because he didn’t talk to me.

‘And I do know that because our politics are local, my brother came here on the Obedient Movement; he came here on the Sympathy Vote because an accident happened.

‘That is a story for another day,’ Moro said.

FERMA inaugurates special initiative to tackle road crashes in Kogi

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has inaugurated a special intervention, codenamed ‘Operation Safeguard the Roads’, to tackle road traffic crashes in Kogi.

Muktar Abdulrahim, the Federal Road Maintenance Engineer in the state, inaugurated the programme at Ochadamu, along Itobe-Anyigba Road, Kogi.

Abdulrahim said that the programme was aimed at enhancing the efficiency of all federal roads for motorists and empowering youths along the road corridors.

‘The programme is to discourage road vandalism and abuses, such as dumping of refuse on drainages and road sides, unauthorised cutting of the road and stealing of critical facilities, such as bridge handrails, road signs, among others.

‘It is designed to improve road safety, reduce travel time and costs, and provide temporary employment opportunities for youths in the communities along major federal roads.

‘This initiative will also stimulate a sense of ownership of the road by communities along the route and properly safeguard it, ‘ he stated.

Abdulrahim explained that the move would ensure proper control of the vegetation to enhance visibility, reduce road crashes and desilting of lined drains and culverts to prevent flooding and reduce the cost of maintaining the roads.

‘Minor repairs, including patching of potholes, reinstatement of collapsed sections, will be done to enable free flow of traffic.

‘We shall also conduct training on road maintenance operations for residents of communities along major roads,’ he said.

Abdulrahim, however, expressed gratitude to its Managing Director, Dr Chukwu Emeka-Agbasi, for the laudable programme.

In his brief remarks, Mr Awodun Daniel, FERMA’s Zonal Director, North-Central 1, emphasised that the programme would make the roads safer, particularly as the Yuletide approaches.

Tribune Online reports that the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), traditional rulers and members of the public attended the event.

It would be recalled that the managing director of the agency had, on Sept. 27, formally inaugurated the programme along the Zuba-Giri-Abaji-Lokojo road.

PDP expresses concern over killings in Kwara, calls for effective border patrol

The Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep concern over the recent killings in Kwara State and urged security agencies to strengthen border patrols across all states in the Southwest region.

Speaking in Ibadan on Wednesday after the inaugural meeting of the State Executive Council of the party, the State Chairman, Dato Ogungbenro, called on the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to live up to its constitutional responsibility of safeguarding the lives and property of Nigerians.

Ogungbenro noted that the reported invasion of some communities in Kwara State was particularly worrisome given the state’s proximity to parts of the Southwest.

It will be recalled that suspected armed bandits recently attacked Oke-Ode community in Kwara State, leaving several people dead and others injured.

In response to the incident, Ogungbenro urged relevant security agencies to enhance surveillance and patrol operations along border communities to prevent a spillover of violence.

‘It is very unfortunate. I read the attacks, because some people sent some video clips of what had happened in Kwara State, particularly in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.

‘I wouldn’t know, and I don’t want to condemn anybody but I think there is need for proactive action and engagement from the Central government. The government must do the needful, otherwise this country is in serious problem,’ he advised.

On the party’s future plans, the chairman said, ‘The greatest agenda for this newly inaugurated PDP Excos is to deliver PDP 2027. All other things are under that. We must deliver the governor of this state to PDP again come 2027.’

Addressing the issue of zoning, Ogungbenro stated, ‘Even though it is not known in the face of law, based on consensus agreement, it is permissible in politics. However, when we get to that bridge, we will surely cross it. Whatever that will serve the purpose of the teeming populace is our agenda.’

How Nigeria can achieve sustainable development, global progress – Oyo PDP Rep

For Nigeria to achieve sustainable development and global progress, scholars, researchers and policymakers must make equity, diversity and inclusivity central to research and academic practice.

The member representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West federal constituency of Oyo state in the House of Representatives and Chairman, House Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide made the call on Tuesday, while delivering his goodwill message at the 2nd Multidisciplinary International Conference of the Postgraduate College, Lead City University, Ibadan, themed ‘Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity in Research.’

The lawmaker described the conference as a convergence of ’eminent scholars, researchers, policymakers and practitioners from within and outside Nigeria,’ noting that its focus should reflect the growing global relevance of inclusive research in shaping national and international development.

According to him, ‘conversations on justice, representation and inclusivity have transcended politics and entered the very heart of academic inquiry. For research to remain impactful and credible, it must embrace diversity of thought, equity in access to opportunities and inclusivity in participation. These he said are the bedrock of sustainable scholarly works.’

Hon. Olajide, who emphasized the close link between innovation, fairness and collaboration, remarked that inclusivity in research strengthens creativity and problem-solving. ‘In my role as Chairman of the House Committee on Digital, ICT, and Cybersecurity, I am constantly reminded that innovation thrives best in environments where fairness, openness and collaboration are prioritized. When the voices of women and men, the young and the elderly, persons with disabilities, the marginalized and the mainstream are all reflected in academic discourse, knowledge becomes richer, more dynamic and more relevant to solving real-world problems,’ he stated.

I’m committed to making Nigeria hub of business activities – Tinubu

Nigeria’s President, Sen Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government in making the country a hub of business activities that will grow the economy.

The President was speaking in Bauchi on Wednesday when he was declared open, the first International Business and Investment Summit organised by the Bauchi State Government.

Represented by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, the President assured investors of Nigeria’s stable and profitable business environment under the current administration.

Policy continuity, consistency key to foreign investment inflow – APM Terminals

APM Terminals Nigeria has emphasised that continuity and consistency in policy regulations are essential to creating an enabling environment for foreign investment inflow into the country.

This was stated by the Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, Frederik Klinke, at the 31st Annual Nigerian Economic Summit, which recently concluded in Abuja.

The summit, themed The Reform Imperative: Building a Prosperous and Inclusive Nigeria by 2030, brought together key stakeholders in the public and private sectors.

Speaking during a CEO Roundtable panel discussion on The Future of Infrastructure Funding in Nigeria, Klinke described Nigeria’s inclusion in every global investor’s portfolio as crucial to their long-term strategy for Africa.

He said, ‘What investors are concerned about is long term predictability; there must be policies in place that would not change. There is a lot of positivity around the reforms being taken by the government. However, there has to be the right regulatory environment for predictability that guarantees that the rules will not change.

‘The same goes for the commercial terms of these investments. When you operate in a volatile inflation and forex environment like Nigeria, investors understand that but there has to be assurance that the regulation in place allows for such volatility by enabling investors to adjust tariffs when inflation runs high. If that is not in place, that it becomes a huge hindrance to business.’

Other panelists who shared their recommendations on the topic included the Executive Director of InfraCredit, Daniel Mueller; the Director-General of the Nigeria Country Office, African Development Bank, Abdul Kamara; and the Chief Executive Officer of ARM-Harith Infrastructure Investments Limited, Rachel More-Oshodi.

Earlier, Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, during the opening ceremony, assured delegates that while Nigeria’s challenges were daunting, they were not insurmountable.

He said, ‘Every reform we have introduced has emerged from deep reflection and the courage to act in the interest of the nation. Our ticket to achieve inclusive and lasting prosperity is our series of sound policies, strong partnerships, and the commitment of the private sector. This is why we must use this platform to develop actionable recommendations to drive sustainable growth and strengthen our nation’s resilience. The government is ready to receive and implement recommendations that will emerge from your deliberations through the relevant MDAs. We will industrialise Nigeria through power, logistics and technology.’

Director-General of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), Jobson Ewalefoh, described as unanimous the reality that political risk remains Nigeria’s biggest hindrance to investors.

He said, ‘The discussion before us goes beyond the funding of physical assets. Our infrastructure gap represents a significant challenge and transformative opportunity. Public resources can no longer support the transformation we envisage. This is exactly where ICRC serves as a catalyst; to regulate and oversee PPE projects.

‘As a country, we cannot run away from the fact that we have an infrastructure challenge. This is what we are trying to do differently at ICRC; we are trying to create solutions for the problems. We have begun this by streamlining the BPE process. Lots of people want to invest in Nigeria. Nigeria is open for business and the ICRC is available to guide investors.’

Alleged attempted murder: NUPENG not using police, court to settle union matter – President tells court

The National President of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Williams Akporeha, on Wednesday told the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that the union was not using the police or the court to settle internal union matters.

Akporeha made the assertion while being cross-examined by defence counsel, Christopher Oshomegie (SAN), in the ongoing trial of 21 former leaders of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of NUPENG before Justice Yusuf Halilu, sitting at Maitama, Abuja.

The police had charged a former PTD National Chairman, Lucky Osesua, and 21 others before the court on a five-count charge bordering on attempted murder, breach of peace, and assault in case number FCT/HC/CR/042/2023.

The defendants were alleged to have, on November 1, 2023, attacked Akporeha; the union’s Secretary-General, Olawale Afolabi; and the new PTD National Chairman, Augustine Egbon, acting in a manner likely to cause their death, among other offences.

Other defendants included Dayyabu Garga, Humble Obinna, Akinolu Olabisi, Godwin Nwaka, Tiamiu Sikiru, Abdulmimin Shaibu, John Amajuoyi, Zaira Aregbo, Patrick Erhivwor, Stephen Ogheneruemu, Gift Ukponku, Sunday Ezeocha, and seven others.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, while responding to questions from Oshomegie, Akporeha told the court that NUPENG had about 150 branches, of which PTD was one, adding that there was no issue of one group working against another within the union.

According to him, ‘It is not correct that one group is using the police and court against another to settle union matter. I am the national president of the union (NUPENG); I oversee everybody.

‘NUPENG is one body, and there are no groups. NUPENG has about 150 branches which PTD is one of them. The issue of one group against another does not arise.’

Akporeha, who testified as the second prosecution witness (PW2), told the court that the union had conducted PTD executive elections in June 2022 in Ibadan, where the first defendant, Lucky Osesua, and Dayyabu Garga, among others, emerged winners. However, the National Industrial Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, nullified the election.

He explained that the court directed NUPENG to conduct another election for PTD, but some of the defendants went to the National Industrial Court in Abuja, which also nullified the second election.

‘After the first election was nullified, the court directed that another election be conducted. This was conducted but some of them (defendants) went to court and the court also nullified the second election.

‘After this, NUPENG conducted another election in Ibadan, while some people also conducted another illegal election in Abuja. It is NUPENG that is supposed to conduct elections. The one the court directed to be supervised by NUPENG was conducted in Ibadan,’ he told the court.

He further stated that most of those who conducted the illegal Abuja election did not show up in Ibadan for the court-ordered poll supervised by NUPENG.

He confirmed that the Lucky Osesua-led executives that emerged from the illegal Abuja election later filed a suit against the executives elected in Ibadan, adding that he was joined as a defendant in the case.

Akporeha denied the suggestion by Oshomegie that he went to install the winner of the Ibadan election on the day he and others were attacked at the PTD national secretariat at No. 50 Majekodunmi Street, Utako, Abuja, which also served as NUPENG’s liaison office.

According to him, the winners of the Ibadan election had already been inaugurated there after emerging victorious, adding that Osesua and the other defendants were not supposed to occupy the PTD national secretariat as they were not the authentic executives.

He told the court that on the day of the attack, he and others met Osesua and his group at the gate of the premises, where they were stopped from driving in. They then used a small gate to enter, where they were later attacked.

The witness said the defendants led a mob of youths armed with gallons of petrol and other weapons to attack the hotel where he and others were lodged, destroying doors, windows, and other property.

He added that he was speaking with the new PTD National Chairman, Augustine Egbon, when he heard the door to his room being broken and Egbon screaming as he was beaten.

‘I was not with Egbon but I was on phone with him when I heard the door to his room broken and he screamed. I also saw when he was being beaten and dragged from the fourth floor. He was beaten to a pulp,’ Akporeha said.

He said it took the intervention of the then acting Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Utako Division to rescue him from his hotel room before the defendants were arrested and taken to the police command.

Following the conclusion of his cross-examination by the defence counsel, Justice Halilu adjourned the case to November 10 for the continuation of the hearing.

LASTMA nabs suspect for impersonation

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested a 47-year-old man for allegedly impersonating one of its officials and extorting N7,800 from a motorist.

In a statement on Wednesday, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the suspect was apprehended on Tuesday near Itire Junction in Lagos.

According to Bakare-Oki, preliminary investigations showed that the suspect, posing as a LASTMA operative, stopped a motorist, Mr Stephen Ayano, and demanded N80,000 for allegedly making an unlawful turn.

‘The suspect told his victim that the amount is the penalty for the traffic violation. Unable to meet the outrageous demand, the victim pleaded and eventually parted with the only cash (N7,800) in his possession and handed it to the fake officer,’ Bakare-Oki said.

He added that the victim later became suspicious and contacted LASTMA through its toll-free line to confirm the officer’s identity. The agency’s Surveillance and Intelligence Unit was immediately mobilised to the area, leading to the suspect’s arrest after a brief attempt to flee.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to being part of a three-man syndicate that disguises as LASTMA personnel to extort motorists around Itire and nearby areas, making up to N65,000 daily from their illegal activities.

Bakare-Oki praised the motorist for promptly reporting the incident, describing it as an act of civic responsibility. He also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to integrity, professionalism, and transparency in its operations.

He reminded the public that genuine LASTMA officials can be identified by their uniforms, name tags, and service identification numbers, and warned against dealing with impostors.

‘I can assure the public that the suspect will be arraigned before a Mobile Court to serve as a deterrent to others who impersonate LASTMA officials to extort innocent citizens,’ he said.

Oba of Benin frowns at Iyaloja’s nomenclature in Edo markets

Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, has maintained his earlier stand against the introduction of ‘IYALOJA CONCEPT’ into markets administration in Benin, the Edo, saying that he was yet to fathom the aim of the concept, he termed as allien.

Recall that Oba Ewuare II had recently told the daughter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mrs.Folashade Ojo Tinubu, and the Iyaloja-General of Market Women Association, Mrs.Folashade Ojo Tinubu, who led a group of women to a visit to the palace that there was no Iyaloja title amongst market women in Benin Kingdom

The first Class traditional ruler, educated the President’s daughter on assigned roles of the various market women leaders (Iyeki) who make rounds at market shrines, report to the spirits by serving as spiritual rails in addition to coordination of market women, on behalf of the palace whose authority the markets were founded.

According to Oba Ewuare, ‘In Benin, we have a special place for women. When you mentioned Iyaloja – meaning Iyeki-general as they say. This is a bit alien to me. I just say, it’s a bit alien to us here in Benin’.

However, reaffirming his earlier position against Iyaloja’s nomenclature in Benin through a press statement issued on Tuesday by six top palace Chief that include Chief Edionwe Oliha on behalf of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), the Oba questioned that if Iyaloja was a national thing, such should have be extended from Lagos to other states in the country.

The statement queried whether an Edo woman could be made the Iyaloja of Lagos or of Nigeria?

‘Can this concept of Iyaloja be extended to Aba, Owerri Keffi, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto and other parts of Nigeria?’

The Oba said it would have advised the Edo State government on salient tradition if it were consulted much earlier on the Iyeki (market leader) title.

He warned that any deviation of the age-old cultural system of Iyeki might lead to breach of peace.

Market women had visited the Benin Monarch palace to thank him for insisting that Iyaloja title was alien to the Benin culture.

Frowning at the use ot trade associations to run open market and play partisan politics, the Oba Ewuare II said the twin factors were antithetical as well as inimical to the essence of market tradition in Benin culture.

The Oba expressed reservations about the tendency of market women allowing themselves be used as political pawns in the political field under the aegis of Market Associations in Edo State.

He appealed ‘to the market women and the politicians behind them to eschew dragging the sanctity of the name of the Oba into their partisan political affairs.’

According to the statement, ‘The Palace feels that if we were duly consulted about what the tradition says about IYEKI ROLE in Benin tradition all the ensuing controversy or tension would have been avoided.

‘Benin Traditional Council wishes to reiterate that in Benin, there is nothing like Iyeki general, which this lyaloja concept seems to imply. In Benin culture, lyeki emerges among the market women.

‘After being chosen by the market women, she is brought to the Palace for confirmation. Once confirmed, they are told to go ahead and install her as the lyeki of the market.

‘The Palace never choose anybody as lyeki. It is the market women that do that. Every lyeki is independent of each other. Every lyeki is culturally, spiritually and, religiously tied to the Palace.

‘There is a direct functional relationship between lyeki and the Palace. Just as there is no honorary chieftaincy title in Benin culture, so also there is no honorary lyeki title in Benin culture.

‘Every lyeki has a spiritual function she performs for the Palace and for the well-being of the market. We strongly advice that the function of lyeki should not be politicized.

‘We hope the market women headed by their Iyekis would have learned their lesson now and know their traditional connection with the Palace and what is expected of them. And learn to watch the mood of the Palace and go with it.

‘The Palace feels that if we were duly consulted about what the tradition says about Iyeki role in Benin tradition all the ensuing controversy or tension would have been avoided.

‘We do not know the aim of this Iyaloja concept being introduced to Edo State. We hope if is a national thing then Iyaloja of Lagos (or Nigeria) must extend this concept to the other states in Nigeria before we can believe its authenticity and motive.

‘We also have a question: Can an Edo woman be made the Iyaloja of LAGOS or of Nigeria?

‘Can this concept of Iyaloja be extended to Aba, Owerri, Keffi, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto and other parts of Nigeria?’
