Obasanjo hails Aiyedatiwa’s leadership, describes him as model for good governance

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has commended the leadership style of Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, describing him as a visionary, people-oriented leader and a model for good governance in Nigeria.

Obasanjo gave the commendation at the weekend in Akure during his visit to the state for the 75th birthday celebration of human rights lawyer, Dr. Tunji Abayomi.

He praised the governor for his developmental strides since assuming office, noting that the achievements of the Aiyedatiwa-led administration ‘sweeten his ears.’

The former president explained that he had been monitoring developments in Ondo State with admiration, emphasising that Aiyedatiwa’s humility, dedication, and performance in office were rare qualities in Nigeria’s political landscape.

‘After your (Aiyedatiwa’s) campaign visit, I have been hearing from the grapevine about your successes and achievements, and it sweetens my ears. What I have been hearing about your performance since you assumed office gladdens me greatly,’ Obasanjo said.

He also lauded the governor for sustaining peace and hospitality across the state, noting that Aiyedatiwa had proved critics wrong through visible developmental projects executed by his administration.

Obasanjo further applauded the governor’s loyalty to the cause of humanity, adding that his commitment to good governance continues to earn him the trust and support of the people.

‘I had planned to celebrate the birthday in Abeokuta, but Tunji Abayomi said you would take it over. I said, ‘Yes, my prayer has been answered.’

‘As I grow old, I will have people coming behind me to take over responsibilities that I should no longer be handling. I thank you most sincerely for that,’ he added.

In his remarks, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed gratitude to the elder statesman for the visit, describing it as a rare privilege and honour to the government and people of the state.

‘This is the second time you would be visiting Ondo State since I became governor. The last time was during the commissioning of Ojaja Park here in Akure, and it remains an unforgettable experience. Your presence today means a lot to us,’ Aiyedatiwa said.

The governor also appreciated the former president for honouring the celebrant, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, whom he described as a great blessing to the people of the state.

Police beef up security as Osun LG workers resume duty Monday

Security has been strengthened at Local Government Area (LGA) secretariats across Osun State as factional council workers resume duties on Monday, ending an eight-month strike triggered by a control tussle between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) had downed tools since February 17, 2025, following an Appeal Court judgment that reinstated APC chairmen – a move strongly opposed by the PDP, which had conducted its own council elections leading to the emergence of its members.

The protracted crisis kept council offices locked until recently, when the Federal Government recognized the reinstated APC chairmen by releasing six months of withheld allocations to the LGA accounts operated by them. Consequently, workers under the Association of Concerned Local Government Workers announced October 6, 2025, as their official resumption date.

Speaking to The Nation on Sunday, the Osun State Police Command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, assured that adequate measures had been put in place to maintain peace, saying:

‘We won’t have a repeat of what happened on February 17, 2025, in Osun State again on October 6, 2025.’

He emphasised that security operatives have been deployed across all LG secretariats to prevent any breakdown of law and order as work resumes.

He said, ‘Even before the issue of the release of funds, we have been on high alert, especially at our local government areas. I have spoken with the Commissioner of Police, who has given a standing order to our men to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order.’

The Osun APC, through its Director of Media and Information, Chief Kola Olabisi, commended the Association of Concerned Local Government Workers of Osun State for their resolve to resume at their duty posts on Monday.

He described their decision as a patriotic action, saying, ‘It will bring to an end the avoidable sufferings being faced by the stakeholders like the revered traditional rulers, healthcare workers, primary school teachers, and others.’

He noted, ‘We, as a party, are joining the teeming striking workers who have expressed their displeasure on the plan of the state government to frustrate their resumption on Monday, using the promotion letter ploy to drive the plot.

‘The Osun State Government, in a directive signed by one Mr L. M. Kareem, the Permanent Secretary, Osun State Local Government Service Commission, had on Friday directed local government workers to report at the commission in Abere, on Monday, 6th of October, 2025, for the collection of their letters of promotion.’

He noted, ‘The issuance of the strange directive to the council workers to report at Abere for the collection of their promotion letters is not only a panic measure but an indication that all is not well with the infamous administration of Governor Adeleke.

‘In fact, this latest directive to the striking workers shows that Governor Adeleke and those thinking for his government have missed it a big time, as the chosen device for frustrating the resumption of the workers is laughable, puerile, absurd, and unreasonable.

‘Is Governor Adeleke saying that some of the health centres in the state should be closed because of a government directive that the workers should come down to Abere to pick up their promotion letters?

The resumption of local government on Monday by the striking workers is an idea whose time has come, and no army of naysayers and saboteurs can stop it.

Meanwhile, the NULGE President Nathaniel Ogungbagbe said, ‘Any worker who resumes at the council on Monday is induced by APC to legalise their illegality of sacked status. Our genuine members won’t join the resumption.’

NDLEA smashes cocaine cartels behind six UK-bound shipments, arrests arrowhead, five others

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully dismantled two major drug cartels behind six different consignments of cocaine in a series of intelligence-led operations that lasted over three weeks across Lagos.

The drugs were concealed in walls of stainless cups, body cream and hair gel containers, leading to the arrest of five suspects and ultimately the arrowhead of the syndicate, Alhaji Hammed Taofeek Ode, who parades as a businessman and real estate developer.

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Femi Babafemi, made this known in a statement on Sunday.

According to the statement, the beginning of the end of the criminal syndicate’s operations began on 16th September 2025, when NDLEA operatives at the export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, intercepted 174 parcels of cocaine weighing 13.40 kilograms. They were concealed in the walls of cocoa butter body cream containers. A cargo agent was promptly arrested.

The statement reads, ‘Further investigations revealed Alhaji Hammed Taofeek Ode as the mastermind of the shipment, and after weeks of intelligence, it was established that the drug baron had reported a dispute at the Zone 2 headquarters of the Police in Lagos, after which the Agency sought the cooperation of the police to get the suspect into custody.

‘During his preliminary interview, Alhaji Hammed Ode admitted ownership of the consignment, which he claimed he bought at over N150 million. He claimed to be a businessman and estate developer following his return from the United Kingdom in 2024. He had lived for over 27 years in many European countries, including Austria, the Netherlands, France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, before settling in the UK.

‘In like manner, five other desperate attempts by another criminal syndicate to export cocaine consignments to the United Kingdom were also thwarted by operatives of the MMIA Strategic Command of NDLEA. The unravelling of the gang started on 26th September, following the seizure of 2.10kg cocaine concealed in the walls of hair cream containers at the export shed of the Lagos airport.’

According to the statement, the apprehension of a cargo agent led to the arrest of the consignor, Smith David Korede, a furniture maker, on Tuesday, 30th September, at his 3 Arowojobe Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos base, where another consignment of 1.40kg cocaine meant for export to the UK was recovered from him.

It reads, ‘Same day, another consignment of 1.00kg cocaine with a similar mode of concealment going to the UK was also intercepted at the export shed of the airport. The cargo agent arrested in connection with the 1.00kg cocaine also identified Smith David Korede as the consignor, bringing to three the number of seized cocaine consignments linked to the suspect.

‘Two other cocaine laden consignments going to the UK were also intercepted by NDLEA operatives at the export shed of the MMIA on Thursday, 2nd October. Two suspects, Ogunbiyi Oluseye Taiwo and Popoola Francis Olumuyiwa, linked to the seizures, were promptly arrested. One of the consignments contains crayfish, and 12 pieces of stainless cups used to conceal 1.00kg of cocaine, while the second consignment also contains crayfish, and 36 containers of hair cream used to conceal 1.60kg of cocaine.’

Babafemi said the bid by another criminal gang to smuggle into Lagos 6.3 kilograms of Loud, a strong strain of cannabis concealed in a bed sheet and hibiscus flower from Thailand, was equally thwarted by NDLEA operatives attached to some courier companies.

He added that while a joint operation between NDLEA officers and Customs Service personnel at a checkpoint along Danbatta-Daura road, Kano, on Thursday, 2nd October, led to the arrest of 38-year-old Sa’adu Ali and seizure of 290,450 pills of tramadol 250mg and pregabalin capsules.

The statement reads, ‘In Lagos, a notorious drug dealer, John Igbe, operating under the nickname: SammyBless, to distribute illicit drugs in Lekki and Ajah axis, was on Tuesday, 30th September, arrested at Admiralty road, Lekki. At the time of his arrest, 550 grams of Colorado, a synthetic strain of cannabis, packaged in retail plastic cups, were recovered from him.

‘Three other suspects: Idris Lukman, Fuad Abdulsalam, and Mobolaji James were nabbed the same day in the Mushin area of the state, with 109kg skunk, 20 bottles of codeine syrup, and 2kg of nitrous oxide seized from them. At the Trade Fair Complex, Alaba area of the state, 3,700 bottles of codeine syrup and 550,000 caplets of expired 225mg diclofenac were recovered.

‘While a total of 27,700 pills of tramadol 100mg/225mg were seized from a suspect, Salisu Abubakar, 25, at Bode Saadu, Morro LGA, Kwara state, on Monday, 29th September, Blessing Ovaka, 50, was caught with 498.5kg skunk at Kudandan, Chukun LGA, Kaduna, same day, just as Dahiru Salisu, 27, was arrested in possession of 34,180 capsules of tramadol at Gwargwaje along Kaduna – Zaria road on Thursday, 2nd October.

‘In Ogun state, NDLEA operatives on Monday, 29th September, raided Isheri, Obafemi Owode LGA, where a suspect, Abubakar Audu, was arrested with 112kg skunk and 16grams of tramadol. Three suspects: Chuimieze Shedrack, 28; Sunday John, 25, and Solomon Okopko, 27, were nabbed by NDLEA officers on Thursday, 2nd October at Owena/Ijesha forest reserve, Osun state, where they destroyed 14,000kg skunk on 5.6 hectares of cannabis plantation and recovered 142kg of the same psychoactive substance.

‘In Edo, NDLEA operatives on Wednesday, 1st October, intercepted a Toyota Sienna vehicle marked KUJ 47 NW loaded with 22 bags of skunk weighing 244.5kg at Igbanke, Orhionwon LGA, and a suspect, Ineh Excellent Obindi, 28, was arrested. A total of 10,897.35kg skunk was destroyed on four farms measuring 4.358938 hectares at Ugbodo forest, Ovia North East LGA, on Friday, 3rd October, with two suspects: Michael Ayang, 40, and Bernard New Year (a.k.a Don), 47, arrested. Not less than 223.5kg of processed cannabis and seeds were recovered from the farms.

‘Operatives on patrol along the Okene/Lokoja highway intercepted a waybill parcel coming from Lagos to Abuja containing 3.272kg Loud and a sachet of Colorado. A follow-up operation at Gwagwalada park in Abuja led to the arrest of the owner, Tobi Odubote, 34, while another suspect, Ismail Abdurrahim, 32, was arrested in possession of 25.5kg skunk along Abaji- Abuja expressway on Thursday, 2nd October.

‘In like manner, Commands and formations of the Agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities to schools, worship centres, workplaces, and communities, among others, in the past week. These include: WADA sensitization lecture to students and staff of Government Day Secondary School, Hammawa Toungo, Adamawa; Government Day Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina; Day Secondary School, Unguwan Nasarawa, Kontogora, Niger; and traders at Ladega market, Ikorodu, Lagos, while the Imo state command of NDLEA paid a WADA advocacy visit to the State First Lady, Barr. Chioma Uzodinma at Government House, Owerri, among others.’

‘We’ll continue to target and dismantle every identified drug cartel at every level of their operations, from the mules to the dealers in between and up to their leadership.

‘These successful operations should serve as a warning that NDLEA will not relent until the threat posed by the menace of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking is eliminated because every arrest, seizure and assets forfeited by the criminal syndicates signifies innocent lives saved and communities protected either here in Nigeria or in other jurisdictions’, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) stated.

He commended the officers and men of MMIA, DOGI, Kano, Edo, Kwara, Kaduna, Ogun, Osun, Kogi, and FCT Commands, as well as their compatriots across the country, for their tenacity, professionalism, and balanced approach to the drug control efforts of the Agency.

FG dismisses allegations of genocide against Christians in Nigeria

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the international community to disregard allegations of genocide against Christians in Nigeria, describing the claims as baseless and misleading.

Spokesperson for the Ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, in reaction to the reports, said the allegation represents a gross misinterpretation of Nigeria’s complex security challenges and an oversimplification of the issues confronting the country.

In an exclusive interview, Ebienfa assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains fully committed to securing every part of the country and ensuring the safety of all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity.

He emphasised that Nigeria’s security agencies are working tirelessly to tackle all forms of threats and restore peace and stability nationwide.

He said, ‘I must state categorically that the allegations are false and baseless. The Federal Government of Nigeria unequivocally refutes these unwarranted allegations in their entirety. They represent a gross misrepresentation of the complex security situation in Nigeria and a dangerous oversimplification of the challenges we face as a nation. Such claims are not only false but are also irresponsible, as they threaten to undermine the unity, interfaith harmony, and national sovereignty of Nigeria.

‘As you are aware, Nigeria is a multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multi-religious society where over 230 million people of diverse faiths, chiefly Christianity and Islam, have co-existed and thrived together for generations. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion for every citizen. The Government remains steadfast in its duty to protect this right for all Nigerians, irrespective of their creed.

‘The Ministry, therefore, calls upon the international community to disregard these unfounded allegations and to instead support Nigeria’s efforts in combating terrorism and banditry. Moreso, we urge our international partners to seek verified information from official channels and to engage in constructive dialogue with the Nigerian government.

‘Nigeria remains a beacon of religious freedom and diversity in Africa. We are committed to fostering a society where all citizens can live in peace and practice their faith without fear. Therefore, we will not be distracted by those who seek to sow division and distrust for their own geopolitical or ideological ends.’

The ministry spokesperson said, ‘The security challenges confronting Nigeria, particularly in the Northeast, North Central, and other regions, are a result of the activities of terrorist groups and criminal elements, including Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and armed bandits. These groups are notorious for their indiscriminate violence, which has claimed the lives of thousands of Nigerians, both Christians and Muslims alike, and has led to the destruction of places of worship belonging to both faiths. They do not represent any religion; they are enemies of all faiths and of humanity itself.

‘The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully committed to securing every inch of Nigerian territory and protecting every citizen. Our security forces are courageously engaged in ongoing operations across the country to neutralize these threats. We have made significant strides in degrading the capabilities of these terrorist groups and are continuously adapting our strategies to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians.

‘Therefore, to attribute the heinous crimes of these terrorists to a state-sponsored policy against a particular religious group is a deliberate and cynical falsehood. It ignores the shared victimhood of Nigerians across religious lines and the tireless efforts of our military and security agencies.’

Troops destroy eight illegal refineries, seize 18,000 litres of stolen crude in Niger Delta operations

Troops of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, have intensified their fight against oil theft in the Niger Delta, destroying eight illegal refineries and seizing over 18,000 litres of stolen crude oil in a series of coordinated operations across Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa states.

The Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the operations – carried out in collaboration with other security agencies – also led to the arrest of several suspects.

According to him, troops dismantled a newly constructed illegal refining site around Joinkrama 4 in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, recovering over 3,500 litres of stolen crude oil. Other items destroyed included receivers, ovens, drums, and connecting pipes used for illicit refining.

‘Additionally, acting on credible intelligence, troops intercepted a red Mercedes-Benz vacuum truck with registration number AHD 925 XA loaded with over 3,200 litres of stolen crude along Aba Road in Oyigbo LGA. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled upon sighting the troops,’ Danjuma said.

He added that clearance operations conducted along the fringes of the Imo River also resulted in the deactivation of another illegal refining site, where troops recovered three drum pots, two drum receivers, and over 2,000 litres of stolen crude oil stored in sacks. Further seizures were made at Odogwa in Etche LGA, Obeama Uzomiri Waterside in Oyigbo LGA, and Obiafor Oil Field in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA.

In Akwa Ibom State, troops intercepted two Toyota Camry vehicles with registration numbers ANA 495 CK and AKD 233 EQ, conveying 120 nylon bags containing more than 3,600 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) along Ikot Okoro, Abak LGA. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the operation.

Similarly, in Bayelsa State, around Biseni Community along Kemezia Road, troops discovered over 950 litres of stolen petroleum products hidden in an abandoned building at No. 70, Yenagoa LGA.

Danjuma said the General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Eric Emekah commended the troops for their commitment and resilience, urging them to sustain the momentum.

He also warned criminal elements to desist from acts of economic sabotage and embrace legitimate means of livelihood, affirming that the division would continue to ensure that ‘the forests remain green and the waters blue’ through zero tolerance for oil theft and related crimes.

Phyna sparks reactions online after club appearance weeks following sister’s death

Big Brother Naija star Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has triggered mixed reactions online after a video surfaced showing her partying at a nightclub just weeks after the tragic death of her younger sister, Ruth Otabor.

Ruth reportedly died in an accident involving a truck owned by billionaire Aliko Dangote’s company in Edo State, an incident that drew nationwide sympathy for the Otabor family.

Shortly after Ruth’s burial, a video emerged showing Phyna dancing and socialising with friends at a high-end nightclub in Abuja. The footage quickly went viral, sparking debates over her demeanour, outfit, and the company she kept that night.

In the clip, Phyna appeared lively and cheerful, seemingly enjoying herself despite the recent family tragedy.

The outing came shortly after the reality star disclosed that Dangote’s team had allegedly compensated her family with ?20 million over the fatal accident.

While some critics faulted the timing of her public appearance, others defended her, noting that grief is a personal experience and that individuals cope with loss in different ways.

One user wrote, ‘If I talk now, they’ll say everyone mourns differently, but this doesn’t just feel right to me.’

Another commented, ‘People grieve differently. You can’t say she didn’t love her sister just because she’s trying to smile.’

A different user added, ‘So make her no longer enjoy her life again? It might even be that her friends took her out. Allow people to be themselves. Everyone grieves differently.’
