From eligibility to risks involved: What you should know about BBL

Brazilian butt lift (BBL), also known as buttock augmentation, is a procedure done to improve the appearance of the butt, carried out by plastic surgeons. They remove fat deposits from other parts of the body and insert them into the buttocks. After recovery, the butt becomes bigger with a different shape. The area where fat was removed becomes smooth.

It is expected or believed that BBL can last for several years. You might not even need a follow-up treatment after a decade of the procedure. However, as we age, our bodies change. So, you might experience certain changes in your body, which is why it is safe to maintain a healthy weight.

Before your doctor goes ahead with the process of the butt lift, you would be sedated so that you won’t feel any pain in the course of it. The affected area is then wrapped with a compression band to reduce bleeding.

After the butt lift, you may feel weak and in a lot of pain. At this stage, you would still need to be monitored until you’re fit for discharge. Your recovery could take up to six months, and doing simple exercises might be necessary, like leg lifts and squats.

To help you manage the pain, your plastic surgeon might prescribe some medications for you. After one or two weeks, you should feel a little bit relieved. A compression garment around the liposuction might also be necessary, and if you have excess blood, it may be drained through the incision.

For at least two weeks, you may not be able to sit or lie down. You can sleep on your sides and stand. A pillow that helps in distributing pressure evenly may be recommended to help you sit after about eight weeks.

Who is eligible for BBL?

Even though opting to do a Brazilian butt lift is a personal decision, you still need to meet certain requirements.

1. You must be physically fit.

2. You must have enough body fat on other parts of your body.

3. You must be at least 18 years of age.

4. You must be mentally stable.

Note that if you’re not fully developed, it can affect the result of the buttocks lift. Your inner and outer thighs, hips, and lower back region will all be examined by your doctor.

Risks of BBL

There are risks of BBL to your health as it can lead to severe injury or death.

1. You may end up having bruises.

2. You can also get infected.

3. The surgery can lead to injury or death.

4. Your butt can keep swelling.

5. Unhealing wounds.

6. Skin discolouration.

7. The affected area may contain fluid.

New tax system favourable to youths, small business owners – Tinubu’s aide

Dr. Tope Fasua, Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, stated that Nigeria’s new tax regime is designed to significantly reduce the tax burden on the majority of Nigerians, particularly youth and small business owners.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the new tax regime introduced by the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, will take effect on January 1, 2026.

Fasua made these remarks during a panel discussion titled ‘Nigeria’s New Tax System: What Every Youth Should Know’ at the Youth National Discourse Abuja 2025, which was organized by the Eleniyancares Leadership Foundation in Abuja.

He emphasised that the primary goal of the new system is to exempt those who should not be paying taxes in the country.

‘For most youths, the President does not want you to pay any tax. That is the aim of the new tax regime for our youths,’ Fasua said.

He highlighted specific tax reliefs under the new system for low-income earners and small businesses.

‘The law says that anybody earning one million naira and below per annum should go tax-free.

‘That is N800,000 being the allowance you’re given for zero taxes plus N200,000 allowance for your rent.

‘So, that is one million and below. So, that means you’re earning about N83,000 or so naira per month for a whole year you’re not supposed to pay taxes.

‘It’s only when you have earned more than one million that you now begin to pay a minimum amount of taxation,’ he said.

He added that under the new law, entrepreneurial businesses and small business owners with an annual turnover of N50 million or below would also be exempted from all taxes, including the Value Added Tax (VAT).

Fasua said that the government was only interested in collecting tax on profits and not turnover and businesses falling within that turnover bracket would not pay any tax whatsoever.

He explained that the government’s tax focus was being redirected toward high earners, particularly those in the informal sector with high turnover who have historically evaded adequate taxation.

‘What we’ve tried to do on the upper end for people earning N50 million and above is to take their taxes to about 24 per cent,’ from a previous rate of around 18 per cent,” he said.

Fausa said that beyond tax reforms, the broader goal of the new regime was to create a new Nigerian economy that leverages innovation, skips outdated developmental stages and focus on adding value.

He appealed to the youths to move away from business models focused solely on buying and selling, imported goods, encouraging them to embrace innovative entrepreneurship by adding value to products and services.

On the various economic reforms under President Tinubu, the special adviser said that the positive economic indicators were evident that the President’s recent, difficult reforms were working.

Fausa noted that the national growth rate was increasing by 4.23 per cent, with a projection to hit 5 per cent by the end of the year.

‘Our inflation rate is dropping month by month. In the past six months now, it’s dropping. Now we’re on 18.02 per cent.

‘We’re likely to get to 13 per cent by the end of this year. By 2026 we’ll get to what they call single-digit inflation,’ he said.

Fausa said that a leader is actually distinguished from followers by his ability on calculated risks and power of vision.

He described Tinubu as a bold risk-taker, citing his decisions on petroleum subsidy and on the foreign exchange rate.

‘He took the risk on petroleum subsidy to say subsidy is gone right from May 29, 2023. Nigeria is beginning to reap those gains now.

‘Even the Naira is getting stronger. Our reserves have gone up to 43 billion dollars, going to 50 billion dollars. Our manufacturing exports have gone up 67 per cent year on year. We’re just seeing positives everywhere.

‘In fact, it’s unbelievable that in two years, less than three years, we’re seeing the kind of results that we’re seeing,’ he said.

Fasua encouraged young Nigerians to engage positively with the economy and avoid ‘doom-scrolling’ for negative news.

‘This is the best country to be in the world and the place where the youths can be most prosperous,’ he said.

JUST IN: Court sacks Zamfara lawmaker for decamping from PDP to APC

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sacked Rep Abubakar Gummi, for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gummi represents Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara in the House of Representatives.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu, in a judgment, restrained the Speaker, House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, from further recognising Gummi as member representing Gummi/ Bukkuyum Federal Constituency.

Justice Egwuatu also made an order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission. (iNEC) to conduct fresh election to fill the vacancy for the constituency within 30 days from the day of the judgment.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that though the judgment was delivered on Thursday, the certified true copy was sighted on Friday.

The suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1803/2024, was filed by the PDP and its state’s Chairman, Jamilu Jibomagayaki, as 1st and 2nd plaintiffs.

The duo, in the originating summons dated Nov. 28 but filed Nov. 29, 2024, by Ibrahim Bawa, SAN, had sued Hon Abubakar Suleiman Gummi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and INEC as 1st to 3rd defendants respectively.

The plaintiffs had set out four questions for determination and sought nine reliefs for determination.

They asked whether, having regard to the provision of Section 68 (1) (9) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), it was not unconstitutional for Gummies to retain his seat as a member in the house.

They said he defected from PDP, which sponsored him for the election to Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency, to APC, when there was no division in the party, among other questions.

One of the reliefs sought was a declaration that it was unconstitutional for the speaker to refuse/fail to declare Gummi’s seat vacant.

Gummi, in his response through his lawyer, filed a notice of preliminary objection and a counter affidavit.

The lawmaker, in his argument, argued that his decampment was due to the crisis within the PD..

He said contrary to the deposition of the plaintiffs, the lingering unresolved internal and external crisis, both at the national level and in his constituency, is the reason for his defection from the party to the APC.

Gummi said the crisis resulted in a state where he could no longer represent his constituents properly and ensure that they all benefit from shared distribution of the dividends of democracy within the bounds of law, and without undue interference from anyone or anything.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Egwuatu granted all the plaintiffs’ reliefs.

The judge condemned the attitude of some politicians who see defection as a normal practice.

‘Before I take my fingers off the keyboard, let me just add that politicians should respect the wishes of the electorates that elected them into office.

‘A situation where the electorates have made their choices between different political parties and their candidates based on the manifestos and marketability of such a political party, it is legally and morally wrong for such a politician to abandon the party under which platform he or she was elected into office and move to a rival party without relinquishing the mandate of his or her former party.

‘If a person must decamp, don’t decamp with the mandate of the electorates.

‘Don’t transfer the votes garnered on the platform of one party to another party.

‘A politician has no such right to transfer votes of a political party to another political party.

‘The law must punish such moves by taking away the benefits bestowed upon the decampee politician by the electorate.

‘And that is what Section 68 (1) (g) of the Constitution has done.

‘Political prostitution must not be rewarded.

‘In total, I resolve all the issues in favour of the plaintiffs and against the defendants,’ Justice Egwuatu said.

The judge, therefore, ordered that Gummi, having defected from PDP to APC ‘before the expiration of the period the house was elected, automatically loses his seat as a member of the House of Representatives.

He made an order restraining Gummi from further receiving monies as salaries, allowances, or whatsoever called in his capacity as a member representing the constituency.

He also made an order directing the lawmaker to refund to the Federal Government all monies collected as salaries, allowances, or whatsoever called as a member representing the constituency from Oct. 30, 2024, to the date of judgment.

‘An order is made directing that the evidence of the refund of all monies collected as salaries, allowances or howsoever called be filed in the registry of this court within 30 days of the judgment of this court,’ he said.

Justice Egwuatu consequently awarded a fine of N500,000 in favour of the plaintiffs and against the defendants.

Why Maryam Sanda was granted clemency Presidency

The Presidency has explained that Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death for killing her husband, was granted clemency out of compassion and consideration for her young children, not a presidential pardon.

Presidential adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, clarified this on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, following public outrage over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to commute Sanda’s death sentence to 12 years’ imprisonment.

‘Maryam Sanda was given clemency, not pardon. Her kids were put into consideration. It was a crime of passion, not premeditated,’ Onanuga said.

‘Anything can happen between a man and a woman in the heat of the moment. The president is moved by compassion.’

Onanuga stressed that Tinubu’s decision reflected empathy rather than political calculation, noting that the president ‘is not afraid to reverse himself’ and ‘listens to the public.’

Sanda was convicted in 2020 for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, during a domestic dispute.

Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court held that she fatally stabbed Bello with a kitchen knife, ruling that the prosecution had proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Sanda had spent six years in prison before her death sentence was commuted.

Gov Aliyu commissions Mabera road network

Sokoto Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, on Friday commissioned the newly rehabilitated and constructed Mabera Road Network, describing the project as a landmark step in his administration’s drive to transform the state’s infrastructure and improve residents’ quality of life.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Sokoto, Governor Aliyu said the project symbolised the fulfilment of his administration’s promise to deliver people-oriented developments that connect communities and drive economic growth.

‘This moment is not merely about the concrete and asphalt beneath our feet; it is about the fulfilment of a promise,’ the governor said. ‘We are building a Sokoto State where infrastructure works for the people, connects communities, and unlocks economic potential.’

He commended residents of Mabera for their patience and cooperation during the construction period, noting that their support had made the successful completion of the project possible.

Aliyu also lauded ZBCC Nigeria Limited, the contractors that handled the project, for adhering to high technical standards and delivering the job within schedule. ‘You have acquitted yourselves creditably and delivered a standard we are proud of,’ he stated.

Highlighting the economic and social value of the new road network, the governor said it would ease transportation difficulties, promote commerce, and enhance connectivity within Sokoto and neighbouring areas.

‘No economic or social programme can succeed without functional infrastructure,’ Aliyu noted. ‘By investing in this road, we are not only easing movement today but securing the economic prosperity of Mabera for tomorrow.’

While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to continuous infrastructural renewal across the state, the governor pledged to keep channeling resources into projects that directly improve living standards and open up opportunities for the people.

He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and ongoing reforms in the economy and security sectors, assuring that Sokoto would continue to align with the President’s development agenda.

Governor Aliyu also urged the Mabera community to take ownership of the project and ensure its maintenance for the benefit of future generations.

‘With this commissioning, we are not just opening a road, we are opening a pathway to a brighter future,’ he said.

In a symbolic gesture, the governor renamed Katin Sanni Road within the Mabera community after former Zamfara Governor, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, who served as the special guest of honour at the event.

Plateau govt, Chinese firm seal N13bn water project

Plateau State Government has signed a N13.7 billion contract with a Chinese company, China Geochemical Company (CGC), for the rehabilitation of the Laminga and Yakubu Gowon Dams.

Speaking during the signing ceremony at Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos, on Friday, Secretary to the Government of Plateau, Samuel Jatau, said that the water project demonstrates the government’s desire to provide water to the people of the state.

He said that the initial contract was signed by the last administration but was abandoned.

Jatau said, ‘The contract was inherited from the last administration in 2019, but no serious action was taken. Due to the lack of payment of counterpart funding.

He said that as an agricultural state, apart from domestic use, water is seriously needed for agricultural projects, adding that though the government had received severe criticisms over the problem of water, it had tried to mitigate the problem using other means.

‘We are all aware that water is life, and without water we cannot thrive. Agriculture is one of our focal areas as a government and we need water for farming and irrigation. I know that this government has faced criticism from public that we do not care about water, but I think part of that is politics, because even without this contract being signed, or this project moving forward, government has tried to mitigate the problem of water using other means like the procurement of trucks, water tankers and drilling of boreholes.’

He charged the contractors to be conscious of the fact that the contract has timelines and to be completed by 2026.

According to him, the contract has value chain as the people will be employed as laborers and contractors.

Managing Director of the Chinese firm, Ke You Cheng, promised that the company would abide by the terms of the contract.

Commissioner for Water Resources, Bashir Lawandi, said that the government will mitigate the effects of the rehabilitation of the two major dams by using water trucks to provide water to communities in the state.

Bayelsa: NDDC boss denies rift With Gov Diri, dismisses arrest rumour

The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Samuel Ogbuku, has dissociated himself from a recent report in the media attributing his rumoured arrest to the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri.

Ogbuku had in a statement by his media aide, Dr Willie Erin, condemned the report attributed to a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which insinuated a rift between himself and the Governor, and cautioned that there is no rivalry in the APC family in Bayelsa State.

The statement read in part, ‘It is also important to clarify that any comments or opinions expressed by anyone on political matters in Bayelsa State should be regarded strictly as their personal views and not as a representation of the views or position of Dr Ogbuku.

‘The attempt to link the governor to political controversies or rumours of arrest is misleading, mischievous and unnecessary.

‘We want to use this medium to express our sincere apology for any embarrassment the publications may have caused the governor and call on all party faithful to exercise restraint in public commentary, especially when such remarks could mislead the public or misrepresent facts.’
