Jane Fonda and ‘Book Club’ Cast Pay Tribute Following Diane Keaton’s Death

Book Club’s Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen have offered their heartfelt tributes to Diane Keaton following news of their costar’s death at 79.

“It’s hard to believe…or accept…that Diane has passed,” Fonda, 87, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, October 11.

Keaton’s spokesperson confirmed to People on Saturday that the actress died, though no further information was initially provided. Her family — which included two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke — “asked for privacy” in their time of mourning.

In her tribute, Fonda remembered Keaton as a “spark of life and light” who never took herself too seriously.

Diane Keaton’s Health Reportedly ‘Declined Very Suddenly’ in Last Few Months

“[She was] constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view,” Fonda recalled. “Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress!”

The pair worked together on the 2018 romantic comedy Book Club, along with fellow Hollywood legends Bergen and Steenburgen. The Bill Holderman-directed comedy — which made more than $100 million at the box office — cast the four actresses as friends who spice up their love lives after reading erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey in their book club.

“This is a huge loss, both personally and for all of us,” Bergen, 79, told People on Saturday. “Diane was a true artist — tremendously gifted and uniquely talented in so many disciplines, yet also modest and wonderfully eccentric. I will miss her terribly.”

Steenburgen, 72, described Keaton as “magic[al]” in her own statement, as she looked back on her costar’s unrivaled place in Hollywood history.

“There was no one, nor will there ever be, anyone like her,” Steenburgen said on Saturday. “I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend. My love to her family. What a wonder she was!!!”

Many other tributes poured in following the shocking news of Keaton’s death, including her First Wives Club costar Bette Middler, who shared how “unbearably sad” it was to lose the “brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary” actress.

“She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star,” Midler wrote via Instagram. “What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!”

Ben Stiller referred to Keaton as “one of the greatest film actors ever” via X, while Henry Winkler eulogized the Oscar winner as “an extraordinarily talented woman.”

“Every so often a person comes along that defies all definition,” Keaton’s Mrs. Soffel costar Matthew Modine wrote via X. “They’re a wonderful mystery. Sometimes they go digging within themselves attempting to discover something hidden inside — and then discover something magical — which they keep private. Diane was like that. All that and more — all packaged behind her gorgeous smile, razor sharp wit, and deliciously infectious laugh. Good speed, sister.”

Keaton’s career spanned nearly 60 years, and saw her win a Best Actress Oscar for 1977’s Annie Hall. She later branched out as a writer and filmmaker, in addition to continuing to act in popular comedies until shortly before her death. (Her final film role was the 2024 comedy Summer Camp, in which she starred with Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard.)

Diane Keaton’s ‘The First Wives Club’ Costar Goldie Hawn Remembers Actress

Goldie Hawn is remembering her late costar and friend, Diane Keaton.

“Diane, we aren’t ready to lose you,” Hawn, 79, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, October 11, hours after news broke that the famed actress died in California at the age of 79.

“You’ve left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination,” she continued in the caption, which was shared alongside a stunning black and white photo of Keaton in one of her iconic hats and scarfs. “How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to “shut up” honey. There was, and will be, no one like you.”

She continued, “You stole the hearts of the world and shared your genius with millions, making films that made us laugh and cry in ways only you could. I was blessed to make First Wives Club with you, our days starting with coffee in the makeup trailer, laughing and joking, right through to the very last day of filming. It was a roller coaster of love.”

Mandy Moore Remembers ‘Because I Said So’ Mom Diane Keaton After Her Death

The Overboard actress went on to share the plans the two former costars had for their lives in the future.

“We agreed to grow old together, and one day, maybe live together with all our girlfriends,” she continued in the moving social media post. “Well, we never got to live together, but we did grow older together. Who knows… maybe in the next life.”

She added, “Shine your fairy dust up there, girlfriend. I’m going to miss the hell out of you.”

News of Keaton’s death broke on Saturday, October 11. A spokesperson for her family told People the actress died at her home in California. No additional information regarding her death was provided as Keaton’s family asked for privacy during this difficult time.

Keaton and Hawn, 79, costarred in the 1996 film The First Wives Club alongside Bette Midler. The trio played Elise Elliot (Hawn), Annie Paradis (Keaton) and Brenda Cushman (Midler). The movie also starred Maggie Smith, Sarah Jessica Parker, Stockard Channing, Dan Hedaya, Victor Garber, Stephen Collins, Elizabeth Berkly and Marcia Gay Harden.

‘The First Wives Club’ Cast: Where Are the Film’s Stars Now?

In 2015, Hawn explained why a sequel to the movie had never been produced despite fans continuously asking to see the threesome back in action.

“We were all women of a certain age, and everyone took a cut in salary to do it so the studio could make what it needed,” she told Harvard Business Review at the time. “We all took a smaller back end than usual and a much smaller front end. And we ended up doing incredibly well. The movie was hugely successful. It made a lot of money. We were on the cover of Time magazine.”

She continued: “But two years later, when the studio came back with a sequel, they wanted to offer us exactly the same deal. We went back to ground zero. Had three men come in there, they would have upped their salaries without even thinking about it. But the fear of women’s movies is embedded in the culture.”

However, things seemed to change in November 2020, when Hawn hinted at the possibility the trio would reunite for a follow-up movie.

“The script has to be approved, and right now they’ve just given us another draft, so I gotta read that,” Hawn, 79, told Entertainment Tonight on November 18. “So, we’re inching our way toward it, let’s put it that way.”

The movie, which was never made, would have starred the original trio of women, as well as their children and grandchildren, after the man they each married dies in a department store. In 2024, Midler told People the movie was in “development hell.”

“It’s in the abyss where all good scripts go to die,” she added. “Fifteen years is the time limit, I think. When it’s been in development for 15 years, you kind of throw up your hands.”

Midler offered a tribute to Keaton on October 11. “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died,” Midler, 79, wrote via Instagram. “I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me.”

“She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star,” Midler also wrote. “What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!”

Why Diane Keaton Chose to Have Kids in Her 50s

The late Diane Keaton chose an unconventional path to parenthood when she adopted her children well into her 50s — and was candid about the reason behind her decision.

“I didn’t think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother,” Keaton — who died at the age of 79 on Saturday, October 11 — previously told Ladies’ Home Journal. “Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist. It was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.”

Keaton welcomed daughter Dexter, 29, and son Duke, 25, via adoption and as a single mom in her 50s. While Keaton never married during her tenured and prestigious film career, she did date a few famous faces, including Woody Allen, Warren Beatty and Al Pacino.

In 2019, the Something’s Gotta Give actress opened up to People about her decision to never take a walk down the wedding aisle.

Diane Keaton’s Most Memorable Roles: ‘The Godfather’ and More

“Today I was thinking about this — I’m 71 and I think I’m the only one in my generation, and maybe before, who has been a single woman all her life,” she told the outlet at the time, before adding that it would “not have been a good idea for me to have married.”

“I’m really glad I didn’t, and I’m sure they’re happy about it too,” she added, referring to her Hollywood exes.

Later, in 2023, the actress once again reiterated that she was happy to live life as a single mom.

“I don’t date,” she told AARP The Magazine at the time, while insisting that it was “highly unlikely” that she would find herself in another romantic relationship in the future. “I don’t remember anyone calling me, going, ‘This is So-and-So, I’d like to take you out.’ They don’t happen. Of course not.”

The famed actress went on to explain her longstanding stance on marriage – a mindset she established when she was a teen.

“I remember one day in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you’re going to make a good wife,’” she said. “And I thought, ‘ I don’t want to be a wife. No.’”

While Keaton’s family asked for privacy in the wake of her death, many of her costars and fellow Hollywood stars paid tribute to the late actress.

“The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died,” Keaton’s The First Wives’ Club costar Bette Midler shared via Instagram on Saturday. “She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”

Keaton’s former Father of the Bride costars also paid tribute to the late actress.

“This breaks my heart. Getting to work with Diane Keaton will always be one of the highlights of my life,” Kimberly Williams-Paisley — who famously played Keaton’s daughter in the iconic films — wrote in the comments section of People‘s Instagram post announcing the actress’ death, alongside a red heart emoji.

Steve Martin, who played Keaton’s husband, the anxiety-ridden George Banks, in the films, also responded to the late actress’s death.

“Loved!” Martin, 80, wrote via X on Saturday, , alongside a black and white throwback photo of a young Keaton.

It is time for Mutharika, DPP to deliver, no empty politicking

There is growing skepticism among Malawians about whether the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has truly undergone a transformation, as evidenced by the physical altercation of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s Director General, George Kasakula.

This incident occurred because Kasakula publicly supported former President Chakwera and criticized President Mutharika for his advanced age.

Much as the Malawi Police Service has been applauded for swiftly apprehending the culprits, it is disheartening to note that the DPP administration chose to promote such uncivil atrocities by condemning Kamlepo Kalua and Noel Lipipa who openly spoke out against such acts of savagery and violence.

In all honesty, the reality is that Malawians are eagerly anticipating how the DPP government will tackle the economic challenges plaguing our country, such as soaring prices and a shortage of foreign exchange.

It should be acknowledged that Malawians have no interest in seeking revenge or retribution, as seemingly encouraged by the current administration.

Unfortunately, it t has been discovered that the delay in appointing a full cabinet has a potential to hinder the DPP effective governance.

It is crucial to prioritize this process to ensure that all ministries are operational so that they can start addressing the needs of the citizens promptly.

A lot of patriotic Malawians hold the view that the establishment of a new ministry of state should be critically assessed.

If it does not contribute significantly to governance or public service delivery, resources could be better allocated to existing ministries.

A reformed DPP is highly expected. Many Malawians are beginning to fear that the notorious DPP cadets, who have the history of torturing innocent Malawians, are beginning to resurface creating more panic among the citizenry.

It is essential for DPP to reform by focusing on justice and democratic values rather than on political retribution, vengeance and violence.

Furthermore, amid a worsening economy, a clear and actionable economic recovery plan is needed.

This should include strategies for job creation, investment in key sectors, and support for small and medium enterprises to stimulate growth.

In light of the revelation, from September 2025, that individuals continue to cast their votes based on regional and tribal affiliations, it is imperative for the present government to strive towards uniting all citizens of Malawi, regardless of these divisions.

This can be accomplished by implementing inclusive policies, fostering community involvement, and highlighting the importance of a national identity that embraces diversity.

To restore public trust, it is vital to ensure that appointments are made based on integrity and competence.

Avoiding individuals with known ties to crime and corruption will help in building a transparent and accountable government.

It is not too early for the DPP administration to start articulating how it will meet the commitments made during the campaign.

This will not only build credibility but also foster public confidence in the government’s ability to deliver on its promises.

Lastly but not least, immediate action is required to tackle food security, foreign exchange shortages, and fuel scarcity.

This may involve strategic partnerships, investment in agriculture, and efficient management of resources to stabilize the economy.

In conclusion, addressing these priorities will require strong leadership, collaboration, and a commitment to the welfare of all Malawians.

By focusing on these areas, the DPP government will potentially work towards a more stable, prosperous, and united Malawi.

Sharp Focus: Mutharika’s cost-saving directive: Real reform or political optics?

….President Peter Mutharika’s new directive to cut government spending sparks debate over whether it marks the beginning of genuine fiscal discipline or a calculated move to score political points.

When President Peter Mutharika stood before the nation to announce a cost-saving directive for all public officials, his message was clear: Malawi must live within its means.

He ordered ministers, principal secretaries, and heads of departments to minimize unnecessary expenses, cut back on luxurious travel, and prioritize essential government operations.

The directive came at a time when Malawi’s economy is still reeling from inflation, foreign exchange shortages, and rising public debt.

To many, it sounded like a long-overdue step toward responsible governance.

Yet, for others, it felt like déjà vu — another well-crafted speech in a long history of promises about austerity that rarely materialize beyond press statements.

The question that now dominates public discourse is whether Mutharika’s cost-cutting message represents a genuine economic reform agenda or a political performance designed to win back public trust.

In his address, Mutharika emphasized the need for a culture shift in how government manages taxpayers’ money.

He reminded civil servants that leadership is not about comfort but sacrifice.

Peter Mutharika
Peter Mutharika’s Inaugural Speech a Masterclass in Political Reset.

He called for transparency, restraint, and accountability — virtues often preached but seldom practiced in Malawi’s corridors of power.

The directive specifically targeted wasteful expenditures such as foreign trips with bloated delegations, costly allowances, and unnecessary procurement.

Mutharika’s tone was firm, suggesting that he intends to lead by example.

However, Malawians have grown skeptical after years of hearing similar pledges from past administrations — including Mutharika’s own during his first presidency.

The challenge, critics argue, is not the lack of good policies but the absence of political will to enforce them consistently.

Over the past decade, successive governments have announced austerity measures that sounded transformative on paper but collapsed under the weight of political expediency.

Officials continued to travel in large entourages, ministries overspent their budgets, and procurement scandals multiplied.

This pattern of hypocrisy has made citizens question whether Mutharika’s new directive will be any different.

To his credit, the President appears to be aware of this public fatigue.

In his latest statement, he hinted that “discipline begins at the top,” promising to personally monitor compliance across government ministries.

If enforced, that would mark a significant departure from previous administrations where leaders called for sacrifice while living lavishly.

But words alone cannot undo systemic inefficiencies.

Experts argue that for Mutharika’s cost-saving initiative to work, it must be accompanied by structural reforms in procurement, budgeting, and accountability systems.

Political economist Dr. Timothy Kalua notes that “cutting costs is not about banning travel — it’s about transforming the culture of public spending.”

He explains that without transparent monitoring and strong institutional checks, directives often become mere political theater.

Indeed, Malawi’s public service culture has long normalized waste as a form of entitlement.

From senior bureaucrats demanding per diems for every meeting to ministries purchasing luxury vehicles while hospitals run out of medicine, fiscal indiscipline has become embedded in governance.

Breaking that cycle will require more than presidential pronouncements — it will demand enforcement, oversight, and a shift in mindset.

There are also questions about timing.

Why now?

Some observers believe Mutharika’s announcement is part of a broader image rehabilitation strategy as he seeks to strengthen his administration’s credibility after years of economic mismanagement under the previous government.

The President, they argue, understands the growing public resentment over government extravagance and wants to position himself as the reformer who can restore fiscal sanity.

If true, this move could serve both political and practical purposes — a win-win narrative that paints Mutharika as a responsible leader while undermining his critics.

Still, for ordinary Malawians, the test of sincerity will lie in visible results, not rhetoric.

They want to see fewer convoys, smaller delegations, and tangible budget savings redirected toward healthcare, education, and food security.

Anything less would confirm their suspicion that the directive is another exercise in political optics.

History, however, offers both caution and opportunity.

When Mutharika first came to power in 2014, he made similar pledges to cut waste and streamline public service.

Some early measures — such as reducing foreign travel and enforcing budget discipline — showed promise.

But those gains were short-lived, as the machinery of government reverted to old habits.

The challenge this time is to sustain reform beyond the initial fanfare.

Civil society organizations, including the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (CSAT), have welcomed the directive but urged the President to translate words into measurable action.

They propose quarterly public expenditure reports, mandatory audits of travel spending, and penalties for ministries that violate cost-control measures.

Such transparency tools, they argue, would help citizens track whether government rhetoric aligns with reality.

The private sector, too, has taken note.

Business leaders see the directive as a potential signal of fiscal prudence — one that could improve investor confidence if properly implemented.

However, they caution that inconsistent enforcement or selective application could do more harm than good.

“Markets respond to credibility, not promises,” said one Lilongwe-based economist. “If this government walks the talk, the benefits could be real. But if it backtracks, it will lose the little confidence it has regained.”

Meanwhile, on the political front, opposition parties are watching closely.

Some within the Tonse Alliance have dismissed Mutharika’s cost-saving move as “window dressing,” arguing that the directive lacks a clear enforcement framework.

They point out that real reform requires legislation, not just presidential orders.

In contrast, DPP supporters see the directive as a sign that their leader is serious about restoring order and discipline after years of fiscal recklessness under the previous administration.

This divergence in interpretation underscores the polarized nature of Malawian politics, where even fiscal prudence becomes a partisan battlefield.

Still, amid the cynicism, there is a glimmer of hope.

If implemented faithfully, Mutharika’s directive could reset Malawi’s fiscal culture — curbing excesses and redirecting scarce resources toward development priorities.

The benefits would extend beyond budgets to rebuild public confidence in leadership.

But if the directive fades like its predecessors, it will deepen citizens’ frustration and further erode trust in political promises.

At its core, Mutharika’s cost-saving directive represents a moral test as much as a fiscal one.

It challenges leaders to model restraint, bureaucrats to act responsibly, and citizens to hold their government accountable.

The real reform begins not with cutting travel allowances but with cutting hypocrisy.

And as Malawians watch, they know that true leadership is not measured by what is said on camera — but by what is sacrificed when no one is watching.

Whether this new directive becomes a turning point or another political performance will soon be evident in the decisions that follow.

For now, the nation waits — hopeful but wary, applauding the message while scrutinizing the messenger.

Because in the end, cost-saving is not about speeches. It’s about integrity.

Inside the Final Years of Diane Keaton’s Life Before Her Death at 79

Diane Keaton lived life to the fullest up until her death.

On October 11, news broke that the actress had died in California at the age of 79. A spokesperson for her family confirmed her death to People and added that Keaton’s relatives have “asked for privacy.”

While the Oscar-winning actress had a remarkable career on the big screen with noteworthy projects including Annie Hall, Something’s Gotta Give and The First Wives Club, Keaton never just stuck to one box.

In her final years of life, the actress explored everything from Christmas albums and eyewear brands to a cameo in one of Justin Bieber’s most memorable videos.

Diane Keaton’s Most Memorable Roles: ‘The Godfather’ and More

In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly in September 2022, Keaton said she wasn’t ruling anything out with future projects.

“I would say more of everything that comes my way. I don’t know what’s going to come my way. Maybe nothing’s going to come my way,” she shared. “I’ve been so lucky, and so I just don’t want to push off anything without knowing if I could have a chance to know, would I be doing it or what. I wouldn’t knock out anything unless I read something that I really felt that I wouldn’t be right for, something like that. That just is not good for me.”

As Hollywood continues to mourn Keaton’s loss, Us is taking a look back on all the accomplishments the businesswoman made in her final years of life:

In August 2024, Keaton launched the Diane Keaton x Lookoptic collection, which is composed of timeless readers in scratch-resistant standard or progressive lenses with clear or tinted options.

“When you think of iconic women that wear glasses, there is no one more iconic than Diane Keaton,” Lookoptic founder Andrew Leary told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement when the items first became available. “When we reached out to see if she would be interested in a collaboration, we discovered her favorite style had been discontinued. So, together we reimagined the silhouette, adding tints and new [colorways] and the Keaton was born!”

Diane Keaton’s Home Decor Line

During the summer of 2024, Keaton teamed up with Hudson Grace for the brand’s first-ever collaboration. Featuring everything from tableware and bedding to candles and dog bowls, the collection was a passion project for the actress.

“The collection is timeless,” Keaton previously told People. “The pieces aren’t one specific kind of design and are created for those who love family, friends and, most importantly, furry friends!”

Diane Keaton’s Christmas Album

In November 2024, Keaton proved it’s never too late to try something new when she released her debut holiday single titled “First Christmas.”

The Christmas ballad aimed to capture hope and peace even if you are missing someone dearly during the holiday season.

“It is such a beautiful sentiment, and I couldn’t wait to sing it,” Keaton said in a statement before the song’s release. “I’m very proud to be a part of this beautiful Christmas song, and I hope you enjoy it.”

Diane Keaton’s Cameo in Justin Bieber’s Music Video

When Bieber released the official music video for his hit single “Ghost,” fans couldn’t believe Keaton somehow made a guest appearance in the finished product.

The actress ultimately played Bieber’s grandmother mourning the loss of her husband in the three-and-a-half minute video.

“I hadn’t been a fan. I mean, I didn’t even know him,” Keaton told Metro in 2023. “I knew the music a little, and I liked the music, but I wasn’t a fan exactly. So, you know, I don’t have music pouring in my ears all the time. I don’t know why me, I still don’t understand. I don’t know how, but I loved it.”

Diane Keaton’s Dating History Through the Years

Diane Keaton Lists Her Los Angeles Home

In March 2025, Keaton listed her Los Angeles mansion on the market for $29 million. The decision surprised some fans after the actress previously spent years carefully restoring the property and curating the perfect interior. She documented the process in a 2017 book called The House that Pinterest Built.

Diane Keaton’s Movie Roles

In 2024, Keaton appeared in two movies, including the comedy Summer Camp with Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard and Arthur’s Whisky alongside Patricia Hodge.

More recently, Keaton was expected to star in the survival thriller Constance. Production was reportedly set to begin in Los Angeles in August 2024.

Diane Keaton’s Private Health Concerns

A close friend of the Oscar winner revealed to People that Keaton “declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.”

“It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit,” the source explained. “In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”
