MLB: Aaron Judge still ringless as Yankees’ drought hits 16 years

Aaron Judge walked slowly from first base to the Yankees’ dugout after Cody Bellinger ended the game with a strikeout, then turned his head to watch the Toronto Blue Jays celebrate on New York’s infield.

‘You don’t like seeing it and it kind of leaves an impression,’ Judge said. ‘Make sure this doesn’t happen next year.’

New York’s 16th consecutive season without a World Series championship ended Wednesday night with a 5-2 loss to Toronto, which won the AL Division Series 3-1 and advanced to a matchup against Seattle or Detroit for the American League pennant. An hour after the game, Giancarlo Stanton walked over to Judge, seated by his locker in the quiet clubhouse, and put a consoling arm around the captain’s shoulder.

‘Didn’t execute when we needed to,’ Stanton told reporters a few minutes later. ‘Timely at-bats, timely pitches, we just didn’t do it as well as they did.’ Judge hit .500 with seven RBIs in seven postseason games, including .600 (9 for 15) with one homer, six RBIs, four walks and a 1.617 OPS against the Blue Jays. But a year after losing a five-game World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees are still looking for championship No. 28.

‘This has been a tough year for me personally,’ manager Aaron Boone said after his eighth season without a title. ‘It’s terrible. It hurts.’ Now 33 and perhaps on the verge of his third AL MVP award, Judge has had eight unfulfilling trips to the playoffs in 10 big league seasons.

Instead of moving alongside Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle and Derek Jeter in adding to the Yankees’ championship collection, Judge remains in the same category as Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield – star players also known for not winning a World Series in the Bronx.

‘It doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen, and he and I wholeheartedly believe that it will,’ Boone said. ‘You keep working your tail off to get back to this position and punch through.’ Judge won his first AL batting title this season by hitting .331 with 114 RBIs and 53 home runs – reaching 50 for the fourth time. He is on a Hall of Fame track with a .294 career average and 368 homers, and he has a .235 postseason average with 17 homers and 41 RBIs in 65 games.

‘It’s almost like we take it for granted because he only had 50-something homers and not 60,’ said Paul Goldschmidt, a seven-time All-Star who joined the Yankees for this season. ‘Took it to a whole new level. He’s the best that I’ve ever been around. He’s also just the greatest teammate I’ve been around, the best leader.’

It is unclear whether Judge’s right elbow, both of Stanton’s elbows and shortstop Anthony Volpe’s left shoulder might need surgery.

‘We’ll do some work on it and get it right,’ Judge said.

Asked whether an operation could be needed, he responded: ‘I’m not a doctor. I don’t know.’

A year after an AL East title and a five-game World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees had a winning record for the 33rd straight season. But they finished second to Toronto in the division on a tiebreaker, then rallied to win their best-of-three Wild Card Series against archrival Boston after losing the opener.

New York was outscored 34-19 by the Blue Jays and outhomered 9-4, a surprise for an offense that led the major leagues with 274 homers and scored a big league-high 50.2% of its runs on longballs, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

And just like last year, defense precipitated the demise. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. allowed Andrés Giménez’s hard one-hopper to skip off his glove for an error instead of turning it into an inning-ending double play, and Nathan Lukes hit a two-out, two-run single off Devin Williams for a 4-1 lead in the seventh.

‘Just missed it,’ Chisholm said an hour after the final out. ‘Been thinking about that since the play happened, still thinking about it now. Still can’t get it out of my head.’

Judge’s supporting cast needs a remake. New York’s 4.37 bullpen ERA ranked 23rd out of 30 teams. The team’s 7-8-9 batters combined to hit just .224 with a .687 OPS. Volpe batted .212 during the season and .192 in the playoffs with 16 strikeouts in 26 at-bats.

‘I’m sure there will be a lot of sleepless nights,’ Volpe said.

Goldschmidt and outfielder Trent Grisham can become free agents along with Williams, Luke Weaver, Tim Hill and Ryan Yarbrough plus pitcher Paul Blackburn, infielder Amed Rosario and outfielder Austin Slater.

Bellinger is likely to turn down his $25 million player option in favor of a $5 million buyout, and the Yankees probably will decline a $5 million option on oft-injured right-hander Jonathan Loáisiga. They could exercise a $3 million option on Hill.

‘It just sucks for the guys that this might be their last time wearing pinstripes, not getting a chance to have a long run with them and getting the championship,’ Judge said.

PBA: Gabe Norwood says he will retire after Philippine Cup

Gabe Norwood announced on Thursday that he will retire at the end of Rain or Shine’s campaign in the season-opening PBA Philippine Cup.

Norwood bared his intentions to hang it up after 17 seasons through a video posted on the Elasto Painters’ social media, describing his final run as ‘One Last Flight.’ ‘The journey has been nothing short of incredible,’ Norwood said as part of a 65-second video the team produced. ‘I’ve poured everything I had in this game, and in return it has given me more than I have asked for.’

The member of George Mason University’s Cinderella run to the 2006 US NCAA Final Four was the No. 1 overall pick of Rain or Shine in the 2008 Rookie Draft and has been among those responsible for bringing the franchise out of its early struggles.

He was part of all Rain or Shine’s two PBA titles in the 2012 Governors’ Cup and 2016 Commissioner’s Cup while also earning multiple accolades, namely his seven-time membership to the All-Defensive Team, winning three times the Sportsmanship Award and the Rookie of the Year and Mythical Team selections in 2009.

Norwood was also named to the All-Rookie Team in 2009 and claimed the Defensive of the Year plum in 2010, both honors given by the PBA Press Corps.

But Norwood’s biggest legacy is perhaps his multiple stints with the national team, first in the 2007 Fiba Asia Championship and the gold-medal run in the Southeast Asian Games that same year.

It catapulted him to many duties representing flag and country, most notably the 2013 Fiba Asia Championship and the 2014 Fiba World Cup where Norwood dunked on NBA player Luis Scola during Gilas Pilipinas’ match against Argentina in Seville, Spain.

PVL: Petro Gazz beats Galeries in dominant Reinforced debut

Lindsey Vander Weide and Brooke Van Sickle’s reunion was good as advertised, as they led Petro Gazz past Galeries Tower, 25-21, 25-19, 25-14, in the PVL Reinforced Conference on Thursday at the Dasmariñas Arena here.

Vander Weide picked up from where she left off three years after winning the championship for Petro Gazz as she delivered 13 points off nine kills, two blocks, and two aces.

‘I think we have a lot of depth this year as you saw the players coming in, anybody can step on the court and make a difference. That makes me really comfortable playing with them,’ said Vander Weide ‘I know everybody around me is gonna do their job. That showed tonight because it was really a team win.’

Vander Weide reunited with her college teammate from Oregon and two-time All-Filipino Conference MVP Van Sickle, who led the way with 14 points off 12 kills and two aces. MJ Phillips chipped in 12 points, including a game-high four blocks. Jonah Sabete had eight points, while Djanel Cheng dished out 14 excellent sets.

Brooke’s father, Gary, also had a winning debut as the new Petro Gazz head coach. ‘It was good, I think we came out a little slow, but overall it was a good team effort. I like what we saw, the little things that we can fix, we can do that practice, but overall it was a good win. Any win is a good win in the PVL,’ said Gary, who took over the coaching reins after Koji Tsuzurabara and interim Brian Esquibel.

Petro Gazz will be tested right away on Tuesday, battling defending champion Creamline for its second win in Pool B at Smart Araneta Coliseum at 6:30 p.m.

The HighRisers couldn’t give new coach Godfrey Okumu a winning debut after dropping their first Pool B game.

No one scored in double figures, with Montenegrin Jelena Cvijovic and new starting middle blocker Dodee Batindaan leading the way with nine points each.

CPD: Women’s higher economic status contribute to declining fertility rate

Women pursuing their personal goals is seen as a factor behind the declining fertility rate in the Philippines, according to the Commission on Population and Development (CPD).

During the press conference of the 10th National Population Health and Environment, CPD Deputy Executive Director Lolito Tacardon was asked why some women are no longer getting pregnant.

Citing the 2024 Census of Population, Tacardon stated that 16 out of 82 provinces in the country experienced a decline in their annual Population Growth Rate (PGR) from 2015 to 2020 to 2022-2024.

He also pointed out the data of Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) where the country’s PGR slowed down from 1.6% five years ago (2015 to 2020) to 0.8% a year ago (2020-2024). In a statement released on Thursday, the CPD said that the slowdown in the growth rate may be attributed to three factors: Declining fertility and birth rate, high mortality during the Covid-19 pandemic, and migration activity.

‘The PIDS [Philippine Institute for Development Studies] conducted a study using the trends and patterns from the series of national demographic and health surveys,’ Tacardon said.

‘They found out that the most significant factor related to fertility decline is the improvement of the socio-economic condition of women,’ he noted.

‘As they improve their education, income, there’s tendency for them to prefer [a smaller] number of children and delay their fertility[-related plans],’ Tacardon added.

Tacardon also compared the study to the one they conducted during the pandemic.

He said a change in preference was observed among young people, as most of them tend to delay pregnancy or the formation of a family ‘because they want to pursue personal goals.’

In a March 2025 statement, the CPD said that women who have completed college are at 14% compared to men at 10%.

It added that the women’s completion rate for secondary education is 84%, slightly higher than the men’s 81%. Aside from this, Tacardon said that the increasing number of women using contraceptive or family planning methods contribute to the declining fertility rate.

The CPD previously said that more than 8.5 million Filipino women are currently using family planning methods, which is higher than the 8.3 million figure in 2022.

CPD also said that pills remain the most popular method of modern family planning, with 34% of current users, followed by injectables at 20%, while implants posed the highest increase in number among users at 24%.

Ageing population

In a statement released on Thursday, the CPD stated that with the declining fertility rate in the country, the population may approach the ageing phase by 2030.

During that time, the elders who are 60 years old will comprise 11% of the population, and 65 years olds and above will be approximately 7% of the population.

The CPD noted that this was projected by the PSA based on the 2020 population and will be validated once the population age group for 2024 is released.

‘With the declining fertility rate, and as projected by the PSA, the growth rate of the working age population will still be more significant than among the older persons,’ CPD explained.

At least 400 families displaced by floods, landslides in Zamboanga City

At least 400 families or some 1,850 individuals were displaced by floods and landslides in eight villages of Zamboanga City as of Thursday afternoon as rains brought by an intertropical convergence zone poured since Tuesday.

According to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), the displaced families are temporarily sheltered in five evacuation centers.

Initial reports from the CDRRMO listed the villages of Talisayan, San Jose Gusu, Pasonanca, Tigtabon, Tugbungan and Guiwan as hit by flood while Tulungatung and La Paz were hit by landslides.

Some 45 families with 127 individuals were displaced in Talisayan, San Jose Gusu with 227 families or 1,344 individuals, Pasonanca with 14 families or 53 individuals, Tigtabon with 24 families or 78 individuals, Tugbungan with 70 individuals, Guiwan with 84 families or 221 individuals, and a combined total of two families or 10 individuals in Tulungatung and La Paz. Mayor Khymer Olaso has ordered the City Social Welfare and Development Office to provide immediate relief assistance to the affected families. Olaso earlier declared class suspensions on Wednesday and Thursday due to the inclement weather.

CDRRMO chief Elmeir Apolinario said the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is continuously monitoring the situation in the barangays, especially the low-lying and flood-prone areas and is ready to respond to emergencies in light of the unstable weather condition.

On Wednesday evening, the local government deployed a fleet of vehicles to give free rides to stranded commuters as only a few public utility vehicles continued plying on their routes due to flooded street sections. /mr

Researchers, doctors slam nicotine misconceptions at Athens summit

Scientists and medical doctors cautioned that the widespread misconception about nicotine’s harm is hindering millions of smokers worldwide from adopting effective, less harmful alternatives.

During a panel discussion at the eighth Summit on Tobacco Harm Reduction: Novel Products, Research and Policy in Athens on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 2025, organized by SCOHRE, the International Association on Smoking Control and Harm Reduction, 200 experts from 51 countries emphasized a collective message: Science, not ideology, must guide global tobacco control efforts and embrace harm reduction as a vital public health tool for smokers unable or unwilling to quit.

Tobacco harm reduction is a public health strategy aimed at reducing the harm caused by traditional cigarettes by promoting less harmful alternatives such as e-cigarettes, heated tobacco and nicotine pouches. While cessation remains the ‘gold standard,’ experts said these alternatives represent a pragmatic, science-based option.

Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos, a physician and research associate in Greece, noted the important role of the scientific community in correctly communicating the effects of nicotine to dispel misconceptions about it.

The failure to confront these misconceptions will only allow them to thrive, continuously leading many health care professionals-and the public-to mistakenly consider nicotine itself as highly hazardous.

Research shows nicotine itself is not the main cause of diseases associated with smoking, though it is addictive.

Meanwhile, Dr. Giovanni Li Volti, a full professor of biochemistry at the University of Catania, cited studies suggesting nicotine is ‘perfectly safe’ for cardiovascular health and not associated with conditions such as recurrent stroke.

He said the very existence of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) makes no sense if nicotine were inherently risky.

Despite this evidence, Li Volti said the prevailing misperception is widespread.

‘This is the result of our failure as a scientist to communicate. We fail to teach them what is exactly the effect of nicotine and which is the toxic effect of combustion products,’ he said.

He added that high-quality human epidemiological evidence does not support an increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease or cancer from nicotine alone.

The practical consequences of this failure were illustrated by Dr. Rohan Andrade Sequeira, a consultant cardio-endocrine physician in Mumbai, India, where the widespread use of local oral tobacco contributes to exceptionally high rates of oral cancer.

With the global success rate for NRT at only 7 percent, Sequeira said the remaining 93 percent of users ‘have to go back to their old patterns,’ remaining trapped in a cycle without a safer alternative.

For Sequeira, nicotine pouches present an opportunity for India to progress from its traditional patterns of oral tobacco use.

Damian Sweeney, chair of the New Nicotine Alliance Ireland, presented Sweden as a powerful ‘proof of concept.’

While the country’s overall nicotine use is at the European Union average, the majority is through snus, a smoke-free tobacco product.

This has reduced Sweden’s smoking prevalence to just 5 percent-the lowest in the European Union-a clear achievement for tobacco harm reduction supported by robust real-world data.

Sweeney contended that misinformation about nicotine and low-risk alternatives is ‘as deadly as smoking itself.’

The consumer perspective is vital, Sweeney said, urging individuals to share their positive experiences with novel products directly with policymakers.

Farsalinos corroborated the impact of misinformation, noting that a 2017 survey he published found only 5 percent of smokers correctly believed e-cigarettes are substantially less harmful than smoking.

‘When they’re not properly informed, they will not even try to quit using a harm reduction product,’ he said.

Clive Bates, former director of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) UK, cited evidence that all noncombustible nicotine sources are ‘very much less risky than smoking.’

He said the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) has moved away from its core objective of reducing smoking and is actively blocking tobacco harm reduction.

He said a ‘coalition of the willing’ among FCTC parties should emerge to challenge the secretariat and the WHO to integrate harm reduction and reverse the current ‘fanaticism’ against nicotine. The panel concluded that the scientific community should consistently communicate evidence-based findings across all channels, while media outlets share a responsibility to correct misinformation and provide balanced coverage of harm reduction.
