Bauchi enforces night ban on okada, keke operations

Night-time travel by commercial motorcycles and tricycles has been curtailed in Bauchi, with the police confirming the rollout of fresh enforcement measures aimed at tightening security across the state capital.

The directive, which stems from an executive order by the state government, is already being implemented, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Habib. He said the restrictions were introduced in response to a spike in criminal incidents often carried out after dark.

He stated, “The measure is expedient to ensure suppression of rising criminal activities under the cover of night, as security concerns continue to spill over in some parts of the state. The restriction on motorcycles commences at 8:00 p.m., while that on tricycles commences at 10:00 p.m.”

The command also pushed back against allegations circulating online, where a man identified as Ishak Abubakar, also known as “Major”, accused officers of assault and rights violations. Habib dismissed the claims as “malicious, mischievous, and baseless,” insisting they were designed to misinform the public and weaken confidence in security operations.

Providing the police account of events, Habib said the incident dated back to 18 April 2026, when personnel of the Bauchi State Road Traffic Agency apprehended suspected violators of the curfew at the Wunti under-flyover and brought them to the ‘A’ Division.

He explained that Abubakar was contacted by those detained and later appeared at the scene, where he allegedly confronted officials, accused them of extortion and verbally attacked them.

“The suspect obstructed lawful duty, caused disturbance of public peace, attempted to incite unrest among motorcyclists and tricyclists, and interfered with the enforcement of the Executive Order,” Habib said.

Police reinforcements were subsequently deployed, leading to his arrest. Authorities further claimed that while in detention, the suspect acted violently, repeatedly hitting parts of his body against the cell structure, an incident said to have been documented in the station diary.

Following investigations, Abubakar was arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court on 20 April 2026 on charges including obstruction, assault and insulting public officers.

The command maintained that the brutality allegations were unfounded and part of a wider attempt to discredit security agencies. It added that a special investigation team had been set up to examine the matter thoroughly and establish the facts in line with professional standards.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, cautioned residents against breaching the order or attacking law enforcement personnel. He stressed that anyone found violating the directive would be prosecuted.

He also appealed to the public to support security efforts by complying with the restrictions and verifying information through official channels, rather than relying on unconfirmed reports.

Lagos Gov Sanwo-Olu dismisses resignation rumours

The office of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has categorically dismissed reports circulating online that he was “ordered to resign on health grounds,” branding the claims as “pure fabrication” and “falsehoods” from Sahara Reporters.

In a scathing rebuttal to the widely circulated story, Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Sanwo-Olu, expressed deep concern over the continued pattern of disinformation attributed to the online publication.

He stressed that Governor Sanwo-Olu is in good health, mentally fit, and is actively discharging his responsibilities as the Governor of Lagos State.

The statement followed the publication of a sensational headline by Sahara Reporters, claiming that Governor Sanwo-Olu had been pressured into stepping down due to alleged health concerns, with his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, reportedly poised to take over.

“These reports are not only false, they are an intentional attempt to mislead the public,” Akosile stated. “Governor Sanwo-Olu is not under any pressure to resign, nor has anyone demanded his resignation. The Governor is well, in excellent health, and continues to fulfill his duties as Lagos State’s leader with commitment and dedication.”

Earlier today, Governor Sanwo-Olu held a routine meeting with his Deputy Governor, Dr. Hamzat, who visited him to formally announce his intention to run for the governorship position in the upcoming election. Akosile described the meeting as “cordial,” emphasizing that it was a normal political consultation that did not suggest any issues concerning the Governor’s health or leadership.

The statement from Akosile was unambiguous in its condemnation of Sahara Reporters, accusing the platform of routinely publishing misleading and sensational stories that have caused confusion in the past.

While the Governor’s office typically refrains from responding to “false and malicious reports,” the Special Adviser emphasized that the need to reassure Lagosians about their Governor’s health made this statement necessary.

“In light of the growing disinformation, we feel it is crucial to address these malicious rumors. The people of Lagos deserve to know the truth,” Akosile said.

The Governor’s office advised the public to disregard the story as fake news and warned against the spread of misinformation that could undermine trust in the state’s leadership.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who has overseen significant developments in Lagos State, remains a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. Despite ongoing attacks from media outlets like Sahara Reporters, his administration has continued to push forward with policies aimed at urban development, health improvements, and infrastructure growth.

PSG edge Bayern in nine-goal Champions League thriller

By Kazeem Ugbodaga

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) produced a dramatic display to defeat Bayern Munich 5-4 in a pulsating UEFA Champions League semi-final first-leg encounter on Tuesday night, in one of the most thrilling matches of the season.

The high-octane clash saw both sides exchange goals in a contest filled with momentum swings, VAR drama and moments of individual brilliance, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the return leg.

Bayern struck first through Harry Kane, who calmly converted from the penalty spot in the 17th minute to give the German side an early lead.

However, PSG responded swiftly, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia levelling matters with a composed finish before João Neves headed the hosts in front from a well-delivered corner.

The visitors fought back again, as Michael Olise unleashed a stunning strike from distance to restore parity, ensuring the first half ended in dramatic fashion.

PSG regained the advantage just before the break when Ousmane Dembélé converted from the penalty spot following a VAR review, sending the home side into the interval with a 3-2 lead.

The second half continued in the same frenetic fashion. PSG extended their lead through Kvaratskhelia and later Dembélé, who struck again to make it 5-2, appearing to put the game beyond Bayern’s reach. But the Bundesliga giants mounted a spirited comeback. Defender Dayot Upamecano rose highest to head home from a set-piece, before late pressure saw Bayern reduce the deficit further, setting up a tense finish in the closing minutes.

Despite the late surge, PSG held on to secure a narrow 5-4 victory in a match that showcased attacking flair and defensive vulnerabilities from both sides.

The encounter was also marked by several contentious moments, including multiple VAR checks, penalty appeals and tactical substitutions, reflecting the intensity and stakes of a Champions League semi-final.

With nine goals and relentless attacking football, the result leaves the tie delicately balanced, with Bayern expected to push for a comeback in the second leg.

Ogun East: Daniel defies endorsement of Abiodun, picks forms for re-election

By Ayorinde Oluokun

The Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel on Tuesday defied the endorsement of the state governor, Dapo Abiodun for the seat by some stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress, APC to pick the nomination and expression of interest forms for re-election.

Daniel, a former governor of Ogun State announced that he has picked the forms for his re-election in a short post on his social media handles.

However, he did not say anything about the interest of the incumbent governor of the state on the senatorial seat.

The former governor said his bid to return to the Senate was to continue his efforts to provide effective and responsive representation for the people of Ogun East Senatorial District under the platform of APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Daniel, in the short post wrote: “Today, I picked up my nomination and expression of interest forms as I seek to return to the Nigerian Senate, continuing my efforts to provide effective and responsive representation for the people of Ogun East Senatorial District under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Recall that APC leaders and stakeholders in Ogun East Senatorial District had endorsed Abiodun as their consensus candidate for the 2027 senatorial election just over a week ago.

The endorsement was announced on Monday at a stakeholders’ meeting held at Adeola Odutola Hall, Ijebu-Ode.

But Daniel had complained of being locked out of the meeting.

Also, supporters of the Daniel’s loyalists had at a press conference held some days after described the senatorial endorsement of Abiodun as a “kangaroo arrangement”.

The loyalists, under the aegis of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Otunba Gbenga Daniel (BATOGD) Movement said the endorsement lacked adequate consultation and due process within the party structure.

The press conference held in Sagamu was addressed by the Movement’s Deputy Director-General, Mr Tayo Onayemi.

According to him, the constitution only recognises procedures such as consensus backed by the written consent of all aspirants or direct primaries.

He also alleged that Daniel was prevented from entering the venue of the purported APC Ogun East caucus meeting, which, according to him, excluded key stakeholders.

“There is nothing like endorsement in the Electoral Act recently signed into law by the president.

“What we have is consensus by agreement or direct primaries; anything short of this is null and void.

“As far as Sen. Gbenga Daniel is concerned, he is a principled party man who will always abide by the rules and ethics of the party.

“We are confident that the APC, as a disciplined party, will uphold its rules and ensure justice is done,” he said.

With Daniel picking the forms to seek re-election, analysts said the stage is set between him and Abiodun for Ogun East senatorial zone seat.

This is inevitable except the governor decided to drop his ambition to transit to the senate after two tenures as chief executive of Ogun State.

OSG asks SC to dismiss challenges vs VP Sara Duterte’s impeachment case

The Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) has asked the Supreme Court (SC) to dismiss the petitions that challenge the legality of the ongoing impeachment case—referred to by petitioners as ‘mini-trial’—against Vice President Sara Duterte at the House committee on justice (HCJ).

In an 85-page comment-opposition dated April 23, the OSG also asked the SC to deny all the injunctive relief prayed for by the petitioners.

The SC has consolidated two petitions—one filed by the Vice President herself and the other filed by a group of lawyers led by Israelito Torreon.

While the case is pending, both petitions are also asking the SC to stop the proceedings at the House committee on justice.

However, the OSG argued that the impeachment process is a ‘political question’ beyond the reach of judicial review. The government’s lead counsel maintained that the House of Representatives holds the exclusive constitutional mandate to initiate impeachment and determine the sufficiency of such complaints.

‘The findings of sufficiency in form and substance of the subject impeachment complaints, and all actions emanating therefrom involve non-justiciable issues, as they are political questions in the purest sense,’ the OSG said, emphasizing that the judiciary should not ‘pry into the internal workings’ of a coequal branch.

In asking that the proceedings in Congress be declared void from the beginning, both petitions said that it had already become a ‘case-building’ and ‘fishing expedition’ to salvage the complaints, which they said were mere conjunctions, and hearsay.

Likewise, the petitioners questioned the ‘double-standard’ applied by the HCJ in handling the impeachment complaints against President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. and the Vice President.

They noted that the HCJ applied a strict threshold standard in evaluating the impeachment complaints against Marcos, which led to its immediate dismissal.

But the OSG, led by Solicitor General Darlene Berberabe, said the SC can only exercise its judicial review when there is grave abuse of discretion or violation of basic rights, to which there was none in the present case.

In fact, the OSG said, ‘the stage of determining probable cause, such as preliminary investigation or the current status of the impeachment proceeding against Vice President Duterte, the regulation of the right to cross-examination to the extent that questions are required to be coursed through the investigating authority cannot be considered an affront to due process.’

The OSG pointed out that the HCJ in fact invited the Vice President to appear and give her said. During the hearings, she was even called several times.

‘The Committee on Justice was not remiss in affording Vice President Duterte her right to due process, from the time she was required by said Committee to file a Verified Answer and until she was invited to attend the hearings on the said impeachment complaints.’

The OSG added: ‘Thus, in refusing to participate in the hearings despite due notice, petitioner Vice President Duterte cannot now claim that she was denied due process.’

The petitions were labeled as ‘not ripe for judicial determination,’ with the OSG arguing they are an attempt to avoid accountability before the constitutional process even concludes.

Vice President Duterte filed a ‘Consolidated Verified Answer Ad Cautelam’ on March 16, 2026, before taking the matter to the Supreme Court. The OSG maintains that the House committee on justice is not conducting a ‘fishing expedition’ but is performing its constitutional duty to determine probable cause.

Benguet execs probe toxic spill behind Amburayan River fish kill

Authorities are investigating the poisoning of a section of the Amburayan River in Barangay Taba-ao, Kapangan, Benguet, after a fish kill was discovered on April 25, alarming residents.

Barangay officials said the perpetrators have yet to be identified, although the suspected dumping site of the toxic substance has already been located.

Village chair Fredo Agyao said charges will be filed once those responsible are identified, citing violations of Republic Act 8550, as amended by Republic Act 10654, or the Philippine Fisheries Code.

Authorities ruled out the abandoned Sto. Niño copper-gold mine in Tublay is the source of contamination. The site, which ceased operations in 1982, still contains legacy structures such as waste dumps, a tailings storage facility, and underground tunnels.

Water samples have been collected and submitted to the Department of Science and Technology for analysis to determine the substance involved.

The incident prompted the suspension of all recreational activities in Barangay Cuba, Kapangan, starting April 26. Construction work on the Coheco hydro project of Sta. Clara Power Corporation has also been temporarily halted due to potential health risks from contaminated water.

Agyao said no cases of livestock poisoning have been reported so far, but residents have been advised to avoid using river water for their animals as a precaution.

The suspension of activities remains in effect indefinitely, as authorities warn that toxins may persist in slow-moving sections of the river and could require heavy rains to disperse fully.

Marcos orders, vows more financial, tech support for PH inventors

In order to further support the country’s inventors, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Tuesday said he ordered the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to boost financial and technical support for them.

He made rhe announcement during the 2026 National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) Awarding Ceremony in Malacañan Palace, where he highlighted the crucial role that innovation plays in driving growth and improvement in the lives of Filipinos.

‘It cannot be denied that creating is difficult. Many challenges must be overcome, such as a lack of funding and limited access to modern technology. However, beyond these, the real challenge is how to bring it to the market so that it can be immediately utilized by the majority,’ Marcos said in Filipino.

‘As President, I do not accept that there should be an uncertain future for our inventors. They have world-changing ideas, and we must watch them – we cannot watch them wither on the vine due to lack of institutional support. And this is why I have given instructions to the Department of Science and Technology and all other relevant government agencies to strengthen financial and technical support for our inventors,’ he added.

According to Marcos, the DOST-Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) programs and services gave Filipino innovators better access to research and development grants, intellectual property protection, and technology development, and pave ways to global exposure.

He said these programs target to ensure that their innovations will ‘move forward to create a real and lasting impact.’

For this year’s NICE competition, 28 finalists advanced from 764 entries nationwide.

Winning inventions and innovations include a compact neutron radiation measuring device and an affordable herbal cream for treating viral skin conditions under the Tuklas Award for outstanding inventions; a multi-grain precision seeder with a fertilizer applicator under the Banghay Award for industrial design; and an on-site African Swine Fever detection system under the Likha Award for creative research.

An artificial intelligence-powered optical chick-counting device also won under the Sibol Award for outstanding student creative research.

‘These are precisely the kinds of innovations that we seek, ones that offer solutions to real-world challenges and improve the lives of our fellow Filipinos. Nakakatuwang sabihin na sa mga imbensyon at pananaliksik na inyong pinaghirapan ay makikita natin ang sipag, ang talento, at talino ng mga Pinoy,’ Marcos said.

‘Please rest assured, your government will always stand with you, ready to support you on your journey,’ the President added.

Gin Kings face tough stretch after whipping lowly Risers

Barangay Ginebra seems to be peaking at the right time with its fifth straight win on Sunday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

That form will come in handy for the crowd-favorites, who, after securing the quarterfinals berth with their 119-107 mastery of Titan Ultra, enter the final stretch of the eliminations with massive challenges to be hurdled.

Ginebra will battle Meralco first on Friday and league-leader Rain or Shine on Sunday, both at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Ginebra will then wrap up the elimination round against TNT and Bol Bol on May 10 at the Mall of Asia Arena. All three games are not just against teams also chasing the top four, but potential playoff foes down the road.

‘Of course, the biggest goal now is to get to the top four,’ coach Tim Cone said of the twice-to-beat advantage given to the four best teams entering the playoffs. ‘Last conference, we had to come from the bottom and we know now how tough the road is when you are in the bottom four.

‘That’s truly our first goal right now. And then these are the teams we’re gonna be playing if we make it, hopefully, to the semis or the Finals. We will meet them somewhere down the line. So they’ll get to know us, we’ll get to know them.’

The Gin Kings are tied for second with the NLEx Road Warriors at 7-2, trailing only the Elasto Painters with their near-flawless 8-1 win-loss slate. Meralco is at 5-2, followed by TNT at 6-3.

Ginebra beat the Giant Risers despite missing Japeth Aguilar, who has spent the last few days in the hospital after a hard fall in Friday’s tough 115-108 win over the Blackwater Bossing.

Aguilar landed hard on the floor as he was trying to stop the hulking Blackwater import Robert Upshaw III. The injury also made him doubtful for the weekend, though Cone is stressing the importance of his health, rather than his availability.

‘We don’t have a timeframe in terms of when he’ll be back in the lineup or if he’s ready to play. I think the first step is getting out of the hospital and then we’ll decide from there,’ said Cone, who also tried to give a layman’s explanation of his ward’s condition.

‘Basically, he has some air in his lungs or some air in the pockets of his lungs and they had to take it out,’ he added.

Without Aguilar, Ginebra got another important contribution from Troy Rosario, who built on his Player of the Game outing against Blackwater by posting 12 points and 13 rebounds against Titan Ultra.

‘[My performance] was needed because Japeth was down,’ said Rosario. ‘The bigs have to step up without him and I felt that rebounding was one of the things I could contribute because it is one of my fortes.’

Ginebra has won five in a row and is now the hottest team in the conference after splitting the first four games. The Gin Kings haven’t lost since a heartbreaker against the San Miguel Beermen last April 5.

‘I think our chemistry has been very important,’ said RJ Abarrientos after scoring 25 against the Giant Risers. ‘We’ve been digging in during practice on how we can contribute, individually and as a team. I think the mindset of our team, even the third stringers, has been key and that’s what we need in our last three games.’
