MANILA, Philippines — Razon-led Negros Electric and Power Corp. has secured a five-year baseload supply contract with Aboitiz Power Corp., a move expected to strengthen energy security in its franchise area.
Under the deal, Negros Power will source 20 megawatts of stable supply from AboitizPower’s Therma Visayas Inc., reinforcing the power utility’s supply portfolio amid growing demand in Bacolod City and surrounding areas in Negros Occidental.
“With this long-term agreement, we can truly welcome the future with reliable service for our communities,” Negros Power president and CEO Roel Castro said, highlighting the company’s rapid customer growth.
The supply deal comes as Negros Power embarks on a P2.5-billion modernization program to improve the reliability and resiliency of its electrical infrastructure.
The planned upgrades include advanced protection systems, rehabilitation of aging transmission lines and full integration of supervisory control and data acquisition or SCADA technology.
Negros Power, a joint venture between Razon-owned Primelectric Holdings and Central Negros Electric Cooperative, assumed control of the distribution networks in Central Negros last August 2024.
Since the takeover, Negros Power has overhauled various substations to enhance system capacity and resiliency of its distribution business.
It also rehabilitated the entire 30-kilometer Bacolod-Silay 69-kilovolt subtransmission line by replacing aging poles and installing new pin insulators.
Following the onslaught of Typhoon Tino, Negros Power has said recovery efforts in Central Negros are progressing steadily, with restoration now nearing completion.
More than 92 percent of the 244,915 affected customers in the province had been re-energized by mid-November, according to the Department of Energy.
