Thailand and Cambodia are committed to finding a peaceful resolution to their border conflict, with Malaysia offering to facilitate talks towards peace, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday.
Anwar spoke with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and both leaders “reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing a peaceful resolution, in line with the understandings agreed under the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord,” he said in a Facebook post.
Thailand unilaterally suspended terms under the Oct 26 peace agreement after a landmine blast injured Thai soldiers near the border in Si Sa Ket province earlier this week. A deadly shooting at the Thai-Cambodian border followed and marked the most serious escalation since the ceasefire.
“May both nations continue to demonstrate the resolve and courage needed to restore stability along the border, for lasting peace in the region and the safety of their people,” Anwar said.
The Thai-Cambodian conflict stems from long-running disputes over colonial-era border maps and treaties. While relations had stabilised after deadly clashes in 2011, tensions have resurfaced this year.
