KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-Baka City has boosted their chances of promotion to Malawi’s top flight football league after defeating Jenda United 2-0 in an NBS National Division League match played on Monday at Karonga Stadium.
Baka City opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Thomas Shaban converted a well-crafted opportunity, giving Baka City the lead just before halftime.
In the second half, Baka City continued to press, and their efforts paid off in the 75th minute as Amoni Mwakitalu scored the team’s second goal, effectively putting the game out of reach.
The match ended 2-0 in favor of Baka City, securing three valuable points that keep them firmly in contention for promotion to the Super League.
Speaking after the game, Baka City assistant coach Martin Nkhonya expressed his delight at the performance.
He said the victory was hard earned, especially since Jenda United is a team battling relegation and eager to earn points.
Nkhonya emphasized that the win was important not just for points but also for building confidence as the season approaches its final stages.
“The players showed determination and discipline. This is exactly the mindset we need to finish the season strongly,” he noted.
He added that the team’s ultimate goal remains to finish at the top of the league and secure promotion.
“Every match matters and we are focused on taking maximum points to achieve promotion,” Nkhonya said.
On the other hand, Jenda United coach Uchizi Nkunika admitted that the defeat was difficult to take.
He acknowledged that his team has struggled in recent games but remained hopeful for the remaining fixtures.
“Although this result is disappointing, we will work harder and aim to perform better in the upcoming matches. There is still time to recover,” Nkunika said.
At this point in the season, Jenda United has only five points from 17 matches, while Baka City has collected 32 points from the same number of games, highlighting the gap between promotion contenders and teams fighting relegation.
