“HRDC lost moral ground, integrity to question Mutharika Govt on inherited crises”-LITA tears apart

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Leadership Institute for Transparency and Accountability (LITA) has launched a strong attack on the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), accusing the watchdog group of hypocrisy and selective activism as Malawi grapples with worsening national crises.

In a statement dated 11 November 2025 and signed by LITA Executive Director Goodwell Logeya, said it finds HRDC’s sudden resurgence of activism “questionable and hypocritical,” arguing that the group remained silent during years of governance decline under the previous administration.

According to LITA, Malawians are battling rising hardships brought on by shortages of fuel, water and electricity and while HRDC has now begun demanding swift government action, the organisation shares responsibility for the state of affairs.

LITA contends that HRDC previously aligned itself with political actors whose decisions allegedly worsened national mismanagement, only for the coalition to turn around and blame the new administration for problems it helped create. The institute said this behaviour amounts to “hypocrisy of gigantic proportion.”

The organisation stressed that authentic human rights and governance advocacy must be grounded in consistency, honesty and moral independence.

LITA warned that civil society risks losing public trust when it operates as a political tool that activates only when power shifts.

“Such selective activism undermines the entire civic space,” the institute argued.

adding that rebuilding national confidence requires transparency, truth and shared responsibility among all leadership actors.

LITA said the crises Malawi faces today are not the fault of one administration but a product of years of poor governance and weak accountability systems.

For this reason, the institute urged all institutions, including civil society organisations, to embrace self reflection and genuine accountability.

The body has since called on HRDC to recognise its role in the current challenges and recommit to impartial advocacy driven by integrity, independence and national interest.
