Malawi Queens shine as Malawi Kings fall to Zimbabwe in opening netball matches

HARARE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s national netball teams, both men and women, kicked off their opening matches against Zimbabwe on Friday afternoon with mixed results.

The encounters took place in Zimbabwe as part of a friendly test series between the two neighboring nations.

The women’s team, popularly known as the Malawi Queens, started their campaign on a high note after recording a convincing 54-40 victory over the Zimbabwe Gems.

The Queens displayed excellent coordination and dominance throughout the match, proving why they remain one of Africa’s top ranked netball sides.

The Queens showed class in both defense and attack.

Their sharp passes and accurate shooting made a big difference, allowing them to maintain control of the game from the opening whistle to the final moments.

The Zimbabwe Gems tried to fight back in the second and third quarters but Malawi’s tactical discipline kept them at bay.

The Queens’ defensive duo stood firm, intercepting key passes and breaking Zimbabwe’s rhythm whenever they tried to build momentum.

Meanwhile, it was a tough afternoon for the Malawi Kings, the men’s national netball team, who suffered a 62-30 defeat against the Zimbabwe Golden Flyers.

Despite their determination, the Kings struggled to match the pace and physicality of their Zimbabwean opponents.

The opening quarter saw Malawi Kings show glimpses of potential with quick passing and good movement but the Flyers’ experience and finishing power gave them a comfortable lead as the game progressed. The Malawian side failed to recover from the early setback.

Team officials have expressed satisfaction with the effort shown by both sides, emphasizing that such international friendlies are vital for exposure and development.

They said the Kings, being a relatively new team, will gain confidence and experience from these matches.

Both the Queens and Kings are expected to return to action tomorrow in Zimbabwe as the series continues.

The Queens will be aiming to extend their winning start, while the Kings will be seeking redemption and an improved performance.

The Netball Association of Malawi has commended both teams for representing the nation with pride and encouraged fans to continue offering support as the players fight to fly the Malawian flag high.
